The Greykeep Chronicles

The Castellan woke my father at nineteen minutes past two in the morning, and my father woke me at twenty past.

He didn’t knock. He came into our rooms in his nightshirt and his socks with a candle in his hand and stood at the end of the bed, and Seraphina was awake before I was, the way she always is, sitting up with her hair everywhere and her hand already warm on my shoulder.

”Garrick,” said my father quietly. ”Get dressed. Warm. Bring your boots, not your shoes. We’re going north.”

”What’s happened?”

”A gate opened,” said my father. ”From the wrong side. And then it closed again. And nobody came through.” He paused. ”The Castellan says nothing came through. It’s very sure. It’s never been less happy about being sure of anything in its life.”

* * *

The Castellan was standing in the lower hall when we came down, beside the Lyradon arch, exactly where it always stands. The high lamps were burning at each end of the vault. Eleanor was already there, in a coat thrown over her nightgown and her spectacles on crooked and her canvas roll of chisels under her arm. Wynn was beside her with his satchel of paste-pots, his hair flattened on one side from the pillow. Someone had run all the way down to the town to fetch him.

”Tell him,” said my father, to the Castellan.

The Castellan turned its great iron head toward me.

”Thistlemoor,” it said. ”The gate at Coldbrook. In the back room of the bakery.”

I knew it at once. The little hill kingdom in the north, rebuilt after the war out of three valleys and a great deal of sheep. The gate where the Castellan had stooped nearly double under the bakery door and named the baker’s three children, and the smallest had been sick on the far side at the spring fair.

”At two hours and fourteen minutes past midnight,” said the Castellan, ”the Coldbrook gate opened. From the Coldbrook side. Not from mine.” It paused. ”A gate is a door with two handles. Both sides must ask. Either side may close. I did not ask. No one asked me. The Coldbrook side opened alone.” Another pause. ”It remained open for forty-one heartbeats. Then it closed. From the Coldbrook side.”

”And nothing came through,” said Eleanor.

”Nothing came through,” said the Castellan. ”Nothing put its foot on my side. Nothing put its hand through. I would know. I always know.” It turned its head toward the north wall of the vault, as though it could see through the stone to a hill town lying asleep in the snow. ”Something stood on the other side for forty-one heartbeats, with the door open, and looked through it. At me. And then it closed the door.”

Nobody said anything.

”Did you see what it was?” said my father.

”No,” said the Castellan.

It said it very simply. It said it the way it had said I did not see that on the floor of the map room, with Mirelle’s nose on the silk. And I thought, standing in the cold lower hall at half past two in the morning with my boots unlaced, that twice in a month was twice more than I’d ever heard it before.

”I did not see it,” said the Castellan. ”And I do not have its name. But it was not nothing. Nothing does not open doors.”

* * *

We went through at a quarter to three. My father first, because he always goes first, in his coat over his nightshirt and his frost hammer over his shoulder. Then me. Then Eleanor and Wynn. The Castellan came last, stooping.

The bakery at Coldbrook was dark, and very cold, and smelled of flour and yeast and the banked-down oven. The back room is narrow, with flour sacks stacked to the ceiling along one wall and the oven door along the other, and the gate between them, a plain stone arch let into the old back wall of the house, with its brass plate gleaming faintly in the light of my father’s lantern.

The baker was standing in the doorway to the front of the shop in her nightgown and shawl, with a poker in one hand and a candle in the other, and her three children behind her in a row, in descending order of height, all in nightshirts, all with their eyes as round as plates.

”Oh,” she said, when she saw who it was. ”Oh, thank goodness. It’s you. Majesty.” She lowered the poker. ”I didn’t know who to send for. Oskar woke us all up.”

Her name was Corrie Bell. She had flour in the creases of her knuckles that would never come out, and a voice like a kettle coming to the boil. She’d come home to Coldbrook from a refugee camp in the south when she was sixteen, and built the bakery back up out of a shell with her own hands, and asked for a gate in the back room because the hill road to Havenreach was three days and her bread was best on the first.

”Oskar,” said my father gently. He’d crouched down, so that his face was level with the smallest of the three. ”Was it you who woke up?”

Oskar was six, and solemn, with a cowlick that stood straight up from the top of his head like a feather. He looked at my father. Then up at the Castellan, stooping in the back doorway with its great iron head bent under the beam. Then back at my father.

”I got up for water,” he said. ”And there was a man.”

* * *

He told it in the front of the shop, sitting on the counter, wrapped in a blanket, with a cup of milk his mother had warmed on the banked oven. His brothers sat on either side of him, Tib and Arn, nine and eight, interrupting. My father sat on a flour sack on the floor in front of him, and listened, the way he listens in the little kitchen at six in the morning.

”I was thirsty,” said Oskar. ”The jug’s in the back. By the oven. So I went in. And the arch was shining.”

”Shining how?”

Oskar thought about it.

”Like when someone’s coming through,” he said. ”Gray. Like water. But nobody came through. It just stayed shining. And there was a man standing in it.”

”In the arch?”

”No. Our side. In front of it. On the floor, by the sacks.” Oskar pointed at the back room with his cup. ”With his back to me. Looking in. Like he was looking through a window.”

”What did he look like?” said Eleanor quietly. She was standing behind my father with her arms folded.

”Tall,” said Oskar. ”Tall as the Castellan, nearly. In a long gray coat. Down to here.” He pointed at his ankles. ”No hat. And his hair was gray, and he didn’t have any shoes on. His feet were bare on the floor. In the snow-cold.” He frowned. ”And he had a little black thing on his wrist. Like a bit of chain.”

I felt my father go still.

Wynn, by the door, made a small sound. Eleanor didn’t move at all.

The Lockwarden.

There’s no one else it could have been. The tall bare-headed figure in gray who’d stood on the bow of the middle ship at Westmere for three months without moving. Who’d kept Hobb Kitto twenty-four nights in a cabin to have someone to say evening to. Who’d given back Hobb in his own coat, and left a stone in the harbor for listening, and given Selvane back a little of her harbor because he was tired of locking things.

The god of locks and keys. Who, Iselle said, used to have a little of every door in Kethra.

He’d stood in the back room of a bakery in a hill town in the north, in the middle of the night, barefoot, with a gate open in front of him that led straight down the hill road to Havenreach, and everything above it. For forty-one heartbeats.

And he hadn’t gone through.

* * *

”Were you frightened?” said my father.

Oskar considered this seriously, over his milk.

”A bit,” he said. ”At first. Because I didn’t know him. And Ma says if you don’t know someone and they’re in the house at night you shout.” He looked at his mother. ”But he didn’t look like someone you shout at. He looked...” He searched for the word. ”Cold,” he decided. ”He looked really cold. He didn’t have any shoes on.”

”So what did you do?”

”I asked him if he was cold,” said Oskar.

Nobody in the shop moved.

I looked at my father. He was sitting on the flour sack with his elbows on his knees and his face very still, and I knew exactly what he was thinking about. A big, slow, kind dockworker in a little boat under the bow of a black ship, holding up an old brown coat. Evening. You must be cold up there.

My father’s rule. The one Tamar had pinned to the wall of the harbor office at Westmere, under the old one. Nobody speaks to the ships. Nobody asks him anything.

A six-year-old had got up for a drink of water in the middle of the night and broken it without even knowing it was there.

”What did he say?” said my father. Very gently.

”He turned around,” said Oskar. ”Really slowly. Like he was surprised. And he looked at me for a long time. And then he said...” Oskar screwed up his face, getting it right. ”He said, The last person who asked me that was a man called Hobb.” He looked at my father. ”Do you know Hobb?”

”I do,” said my father. ”He’s very big and very kind and he lives in Westmere with his mother.”

”That’s what he said,” said Oskar, pleased. ”The man. He said Hobb was kind.” He took a sip of milk. ”And then he asked me what I wanted.”

* * *

It was very quiet in the bakery.

Outside, through the frosted front window, the snow was coming down over the sleeping town in big slow flakes, and the street lamp at the corner had a halo around it. Corrie Bell had her hand on her youngest son’s shoulder, and her knuckles were white.

”What did you tell him?” said Eleanor.

”I said I wanted a drink of water,” said Oskar. ”Because I did. That’s why I got up.”

”And?”

”And he got it for me.” Oskar sounded faintly surprised himself. ”He picked up the jug. Off the shelf by the oven. And he poured me a cup. And he gave it to me. And he had really cold hands.” He held his own small hand up and looked at it. ”Like snow. But he was careful. He didn’t spill any.”

My father put his hand over his eyes for a moment.

”Then what?” he said, from behind it.

”Then I drank it,” said Oskar. ”And then I asked him what he wanted. Because that’s what you do. Ma says. If someone asks you, you ask them back. It’s manners.”

Corrie Bell made a small sound.

”And he didn’t say anything for ages,” said Oskar. ”He just stood there with the jug. And the arch was still shining behind him. And then he said...” He frowned again. This one was harder. ”He said, I wanted to see if it would open. And I said, It’s open. And he said, Yes. I wanted to see if I would go through.” Oskar looked at my father. ”And I said, Are you going to? And he looked at the arch for a really long time. And he said, No.”

Wynn, by the door, let out a breath.

”And then,” said Oskar, ”he put the jug back. On the shelf. Exactly where it was. And he went over to the arch and put his hand on it, on the side, and it stopped shining. Like blowing out a candle.” He made a little puffing sound to show us. ”And then he took something out of his coat and put it on the flour sacks. And he said, For the lady who cuts the wards. Tell her it was the only one.”

”The only one,” said Eleanor. Her voice had gone very strange.

”That’s what he said.” Oskar nodded. ”And then he said, Thank you for asking if I was cold. And he went out the back door. Into the yard.” He looked at his mother. ”I looked out after him. Because he didn’t have any shoes. But there weren’t any footprints. Not one. Just the snow.” He finished his milk. ”And then I woke everybody up.”

* * *

It was on the third flour sack from the top, in the back room, just where Oskar said. Nobody had touched it. Corrie Bell had been too frightened to, and the children had been told not to, and had obeyed, which my father said afterward was the most remarkable thing in the whole night.

A key.

An old iron key, about the length of my hand. Dark, and plain, and heavy, with a ring at the top worn smooth by a great many fingers over a great many years. It lay on the flour sack in a little drift of spilled flour, and the flour around it had frozen. A ring of frost, perfectly round, the size of a dinner plate, white and glittering in the lantern light.

Eleanor knelt down beside the sacks. She didn’t touch it. She took her spectacles off and bent so close to it that her breath fogged the iron, and looked at it for a long time without saying anything.

Then she looked at the bit.

The bit of a key is the part that goes into the lock. The part with the teeth. And on this key, the teeth weren’t teeth.

They were letters.

A long hook. A double kink. A short hard stroke.

I knew it. Everyone in that room knew it, except Corrie Bell and her children. I’d seen it on the brass plate of every gate on the continent of Avarra in the last month, cut at the very bottom, the last mark, deepened with a fine steel pick and painted with black paste that smelled of pine and burned hair. I’d seen it, written backward, in the shape of sixty black ships at anchor off Westmere, seen from the back of a dragon.

Eleanor’s closing mark.

Held.

Cut into the bit of an iron key, perfectly. Not backward. Not reversed. The right way around. The way she cuts it herself.

And the ring at the top, the part worn smooth by fingers, wasn’t a plain ring at all. It was a knot. A small, tight, tied knot of iron letters, twisted back on itself. Her name-knot. The one she cuts under the closing mark on every plate, so that a ward will only take an answer from her.

”Oh,” said Eleanor, very quietly.

She sat back on her heels on the floor of the back room of the bakery, in her coat over her nightgown, with her spectacles in her hand, and for the first time since I’ve known her, Eleanor Stonehand looked frightened.

* * *

”Tell me,” said my father.

Eleanor didn’t get up. She stayed kneeling on the floor, looking at the key on the flour sack in its ring of frost.

”Every gate I’ve ever made,” she said, ”ends with that mark. Held. It’s the last word of the sentence. It’s what tells the gate to stay shut unless both sides ask. It’s the lock.” She swallowed. ”And a lock is only a lock until somebody makes a key.”

”And this is a key,” said my father.

”This is the key.” Her voice cracked. ”Uriah, this isn’t a picklock. It isn’t a trick. It’s my own mark, cut the right way around, by someone who’s read every plate I ever made from the other side of the door, for years, until they understood it better than my own apprentices.” She looked at the key. ”With this, you wouldn’t need both sides to ask. You’d only need one. You could stand on the far side of any gate I’ve ever built, in any town in Avarra, in the middle of the night, and open it. From the inside. Alone. And walk straight through to Havenreach, and up the hill.”

The bakery was very quiet.

”The new line,” said Wynn hoarsely, from the doorway. ”The locked-name line. We cut it into every gate. It would have closed on him.”

”It wouldn’t,” said Eleanor. ”That’s the worst of it. The new line closes on names Kessavel’s locked on someone. A brand. A chain someone didn’t choose.” She looked up at the Castellan, stooping in the doorway. ”The Chained chose. Every one of them. They put their own links on. There’s nothing locked in them. My line would have let him straight through.” She closed her eyes. ”Forty-one heartbeats. He could have walked into your house, Uriah, while your children were asleep, and I’d never have known until morning.”

”But he didn’t,” said my father.

Eleanor opened her eyes.

”He didn’t,” said my father again. Quietly. He’d got up off the floor. He was standing in the middle of the back room of the bakery with his frost hammer over his shoulder and his nightshirt hanging out under his coat, looking down at the key. ”He had it. The only one. He stood in front of an open gate with it for forty-one heartbeats. And a little boy got up for a drink of water and asked him if he was cold.” He looked at Oskar, who had climbed down off the counter and was standing in the doorway in his blanket, watching us with enormous eyes. ”And he poured the boy a cup of water. And put the jug back where he found it. And closed the gate. And left the key on the flour sacks. For the lady who cuts the wards.” He looked at Eleanor. ”He didn’t leave it there by accident, Eleanor. He gave it back.”

Eleanor stared at him.

”Tell her it was the only one,” said my father. ”That’s not a threat. A threat says there are more. That’s a man telling you the door’s safe again.”

* * *

The Castellan came into the back room then.

It had to stoop so low its great iron head nearly brushed the flour sacks. It stood beside the arch, the way it had stood beside every gate on the continent with its hand on the stone, and then, very slowly, it bent further still, and looked at the key on the flour sack in its ring of frost.

”I would like to keep it,” it said.

Everyone turned.

”I keep the gates,” said the Castellan. ”The ledgers. The map. The names. Who has come in. Who has gone out.” It paused. ”I would like to keep this also. Not in a drawer. Not in the archive. Inside me. Next to the watch.” It lifted one great iron hand and laid it flat against its own chest, where the brass watch ticks, the one it uses to log every crossing to the minute. ”Where it cannot be taken without my knowing. Where I will feel it, every hour, and know that it is held. If the Lady Eleanor permits.”

Eleanor looked at it for a long time.

”I was going to melt it,” she said. ”I was going to take it home and put it in the forge and melt it down to nothing.”

”Yes,” said the Castellan. ”You may. It is yours. It was given to you.” It paused. ”But if you melt it, you will never know whether there was another. And if I keep it, and there is ever another, I will know. Because a key knows its own lock. And I will feel this one turn in me when the other one turns, wherever it is.” It lowered its hand. ”I would rather know.”

Eleanor put her spectacles back on.

She reached out, very slowly, and picked up the key off the flour sack. The frost cracked around it with a small sound like a frozen puddle stepped on. She held it in her palm for a long moment, turning it over, looking at her own mark cut into the iron by someone else’s hand.

Then she held it up to the Castellan.

”Keep it,” she said.

The Castellan took it in two iron fingers, very delicately, the way you’d take a robin’s egg. It opened a small door in its own chest that I’d never known was there, a little square of iron no bigger than a book, over the place where the brass watch ticks. And it put the key inside, and closed the door. And I heard, very faintly, a click.

”Held,” said the Castellan.

* * *

We went home at a little before five, with the sky beginning to gray behind the hills and the snow still falling.

Corrie Bell gave us bread for the journey, the first batch out of the oven, because she said she was up now anyway and she wasn’t going back to bed with gods in her flour. And at the door of the shop, as we were going, Oskar came running out in his blanket and tugged my father’s coat.

”Will he come back?” he said. ”The cold man?”

My father crouched down in the snow.

”I don’t know,” he said. ”Would you like him to?”

Oskar thought about it, seriously, the way he’d thought about everything that night.

”Only if he brings shoes,” he said. ”It’s very cold for no shoes.”

My father laughed. I hadn’t heard him laugh since before Carol came down the tower. He put his hand on Oskar’s head, very gently, over the cowlick.

”If he comes back,” he said, ”and he hasn’t got shoes, you tell him there’s a pair waiting for him at Greykeep. Any size he likes. All he has to do is ask.”

* * *

Mary wrote it at six, in the little kitchen, with the black Council book open on the scrubbed table and her reading glasses on her nose.

Coldbrook, Thistlemoor. Gate opened from the far side at 2:14 a.m., forty-one heartbeats, by the Lockwarden. Did not come through. Left Eleanor’s key. ”The only one.” Now held by the Castellan.

And underneath it, in my father’s terrible handwriting:

Asked if he was cold by Oskar Bell, aged six. Answered.

My father looked at that for a long time. Then he took the pen back from Mary, and crossed out his own rule on the next line, the one from the autumn, the one Tamar had pinned to the wall at Westmere. Nobody asks him anything. He crossed it out the way Mary crosses things out, with a single line, so you can still read what was there.

And under it he wrote a new one.

If he comes to a door, someone asks him in. Properly.

”Are you sure?” said Mary, very quietly.

”No,” said my father. ”But a six-year-old was. And he was right.” He put down the pen. ”Doors. Little ones. Opening from the inside.” He looked at me across the table. ”Thora said.”

Helena put the kettle on.
