Reborn as an Adventurer: I Gain a Skill From Every Monster I Eat

Chapter 191: Chapter 191 — Morning, Before the Kitchen Wakes

The kitchen was still dark when Arlen came down, the common room beyond it just as quiet, the whole inn holding onto sleep a while longer before the day properly demanded anything of it.

He liked it this way. Had liked it since his very first weeks here, honestly, though it had taken him a while to admit that the quiet mattered as much as the cooking itself.

He built up the coals slow, the way he always did, and set a pan warming while he worked through what little the pantry offered this early — eggs, a heel of yesterday’s bread, a handful of dried herbs he’d started keeping in a jar specifically for mornings like this one.

He was three eggs in, humming something tuneless under his breath, when he heard the stairs creak behind him.

”You’re doing that thing again,” Yveth said, appearing in the doorway with her hair still loose, wrapped in a shawl that had clearly been grabbed rather than chosen. ”The humming. You always hum when you think nobody’s listening.”

”Somebody’s always listening in this inn. I’ve made my peace with it.”

”Good. Peace suits you.” She crossed to the counter and hopped up onto it, the same claimed perch she always took whenever she caught him at this hour, legs swinging loose above the floor. ”What is it this time?”

”Eggs. Nothing exciting.”

”Nothing exciting always smells better than it has any right to, coming from you.” She watched him work a moment, quiet, the easy quiet of someone comfortable enough not to fill every silence with words. ”You’re up early even for you.”

”Couldn’t sleep past a point. Happens some mornings.”

”Mm.” She didn’t push further. She rarely did, this early, when the inn was still dark and the two of them hadn’t properly finished waking up yet. ”You’ve been doing this a lot, you know. Since you got back.”

”Cooking?”

”Being down here before anyone else is.” She tilted her head slightly, studying him with the same sharp, assessing attention she brought to most things, softened now by the hour into something gentler. ”I used to just happen to catch you at it, now and then. Feels less like happening lately.”

”Maybe I like the company.”

”Bold claim, given I’ve barely said three sentences.” Her mouth curved, though, something warm underneath the teasing. ”Keep talking. See where it gets you.”

He plated the eggs, split them without thinking much about it, and handed her a share before he’d even properly served his own — the kind of automatic gesture that had stopped feeling worth remarking on weeks ago, for both of them.

”Thank you,” she said, accepting it, and ate a bite before continuing. ”You never did give me the whole account. Of the trip.”

”I gave you some of it.”

”You gave me the parts that make a good story at a crowded table. I want the parts you left out.” She said it plainly, no real demand behind it, just genuine curiosity. ”You don’t have to. I’m just saying I noticed the difference.”

Arlen considered that, turning his fork over once before answering. ”There isn’t a dramatic version I’m hiding. Mostly it was just long. Water everywhere, for weeks. Learning to fight differently than I ever had to before. Some of it was frightening, in a quiet way — not a single terrible moment, just distance. Being that far down, that long, with people who were kind about it but weren’t really mine to lean on.”

”And now you’re back.”

”And now I’m back.” He glanced at her, at the shawl slipping half off one shoulder, at the plate balanced in her lap while she sat there swinging her legs against the counter like she had nowhere else in the world she needed to be. ”This helps. More than I probably say.”

”You don’t say it at all, generally. I’ve had to learn to read it off you instead.” She said it lightly, though something behind her eyes settled a little more seriously for a moment before she let the humor back in. ”I’m not complaining. Just noting it, the way you note things.”

”Fair.”

They ate in comfortable quiet after that, the pan cooling on the stove, the first gray edge of proper daylight starting to show at the kitchen’s narrow window. Arlen found himself, not for the first time, simply watching her — the unhurried way she ate, the small, private amusement that crossed her face whenever he caught himself humming again without noticing.

”You know,” she said eventually, ”Pella’s convinced this is some kind of ritual now. Mornings, sometimes nights too, whenever you’re up late enough that everyone else has gone to bed.”

”Is it not?”

”I didn’t say it wasn’t.” She set her empty plate aside, and studied him a moment longer, something quietly fond beneath her usual sharp composure. ”I just find it funny that neither of us ever actually decided it, and it happened anyway. Same as most things worth keeping, I suppose.”

”Didn’t peg you for sentimental this early in the morning.”

”I’m not sentimental. I’m observant. There’s a difference.” She hopped down off the counter, gathering both their plates before he could reach for them himself, the same brisk efficiency she brought to everything even at this hour. ”Go on. Finish whatever you’re doing here. I’ve got an inn to open in an hour, and I refuse to do it looking like I just rolled out of bed, even though we both know that’s exactly what happened.”

”You look fine.”

”I look like a woman who got up early for eggs and mediocre company.” She was already moving toward the washbasin, though her voice carried genuine warmth beneath the deflection. ”Mediocre, charitable company. I’ll allow that much.”

Arlen laughed, and started on the cleanup properly, the two of them working in the same easy, wordless coordination they’d built over months of exactly this — mornings that started quiet and dark, conversations that drifted wherever they wanted to without needing to arrive anywhere in particular, the comfortable, unhurried rhythm of two people who’d stopped needing to explain why they kept finding their way back to the same kitchen.

”Same time tomorrow?” he asked, once the last of the dishes were set aside.

”I never agreed to a schedule.”

”You never disagreed with one either.”

”That’s not the same as agreeing.” She paused at the doorway, glancing back at him with the same dry, unhurried humor she always carried, though something warmer sat underneath it this time, plain enough that even she didn’t bother hiding it fully. ”But I’ll probably be down here again. If you happen to be cooking.”

”I’ll probably be cooking.”

”Then I suppose we’ll see.” She disappeared up the stairs before he could answer, her footsteps fading into the inn’s still-quiet upper floor, and Arlen stood there a moment longer in the gray, early light, feeling the particular, settled warmth of something that had never needed naming to matter.

He finished tidying the kitchen alone, the sounds of the inn slowly waking up around him — Pella’s voice somewhere above, the creak of shutters being opened, the ordinary business of a new day beginning — and found himself, not for the first time since coming home, simply grateful for how easily this quiet, unremarkable ritual had settled into the shape of his life.

He didn’t know exactly what it was becoming. He wasn’t in any particular hurry to find out.

For now, mornings like this one were enough on their own.
