Reborn as an Adventurer: I Gain a Skill From Every Monster I Eat

Chapter 161: Chapter 161 — What Waited Below

He woke the following morning to an ankle that bore his weight without protest, and spent a cautious, deliberate few minutes simply walking small circles around his camp before trusting it with anything more demanding.

Good enough, he decided, testing a careful hop and finding no fresh complaint from the joint. Not perfect. Good enough.

He broke camp with the same unhurried thoroughness he brought to everything now, banking the fire properly and coiling what remained of his web-silk perimeter, and turned his attention, finally, back toward the pit that had cost him two days and considerably more pain than he’d have chosen for himself.

He approached it carefully, keeping well clear of the false crust’s edges, and studied the worked stone visible along its rim with the same patient attention he’d given it while trapped inside.

Someone built this. Question’s still who, and why here specifically.

He circled the pit’s perimeter, and found, a short distance further along, a second patch of ground that shared the same subtly wrong quality — too even, too deliberately smooth beneath its thin natural covering. A third followed not far past that, tucked along a narrower stretch of passage that anything moving carelessly might easily wander into.

Not one trap. A whole cluster of them.

He gave each a wide, careful berth, testing the ground ahead of every step now with deliberate attention rather than comfortable habit, and found himself, moving deeper into this stretch of the floor, increasingly certain that whatever had built these traps had done so with genuine purpose rather than idle mischief.

Herding something, maybe. Or protecting it.

The passage opened, some distance further on, into a smaller chamber than the vast, forested expanse he’d explored before his fall — considerably more enclosed, its walls carved with faint, worn markings that reminded him, uncomfortably, of the boundary ruins he’d once helped Eldrin document, though cruder, and considerably less deliberate in their craft.

He approached carefully, senses stretched wide, and found the chamber’s center occupied by a low, moss-covered mound that rose and fell, faintly but unmistakably, with the slow rhythm of breath.

That’s not moss growing on stone. That’s something alive.

He backed a careful step, studying the shape properly now that his attention had caught up with what his eyes had already registered — a creature considerably larger than anything he’d yet faced on this floor, its hide grown over with the same pale fungal growth that carpeted much of the surrounding terrain, camouflaged so thoroughly that he suspected he’d have walked directly past it if its breathing hadn’t given the game away.

Rank Five, maybe higher. This is what built those traps.

He weighed the wisdom of engaging it at all, exhausted as he still was from two days of injury and recovery, and found himself, turning the decision over carefully, deciding against it. Not out of fear, precisely, but out of the same deliberate caution that had carried him through every genuine unknown so far.

Not today. I’ve pushed this floor about as far as sense allows already.

He backed away slowly, careful not to disturb whatever rest the creature was currently enjoying, and made his way back toward the passage he’d come from, filing the chamber’s location away with the same careful attention he gave every significant discovery.

Worth reporting, at least. Ilyana’s team should know something this size is denning here, trap-building or not.

He retraced his path with considerably more caution than his original descent had carried, testing every questionable stretch of ground before committing his weight to it, and found the climb back through Floor Four and Floor Three passing without further incident — no fresh traps, no fresh danger, simply the long, patient work of putting distance between himself and everything the past two days had cost him.

He emerged into the evening light well after the checkpoint’s usual quiet hours, and the guard on duty — a different face than his usual morning crossing — gave him a longer look than the badge alone typically warranted.

”Rough one?” she asked, taking in the state of his armor, the careful way he still favored one leg despite its healing.

”Learned a few things the hard way,” Arlen admitted.

”That’s most of what this place teaches, eventually.” She waved him through without further comment, and Arlen made his way toward the Foxglove with the particular, hollowed-out exhaustion of someone who had genuinely earned a proper bed.

Rilla was the first to spot him, and her usual quiet composure slipped, just slightly, at the sight of him.

”You look terrible,” she said, setting down the tray she’d been carrying.

”Feels about right, then,” Arlen said, managing a tired smile.

She studied him a moment longer, something careful and evaluating behind her quiet attention, and disappeared toward the kitchen without further comment, returning a few minutes later with a cup of something warm and faintly bitter that she pressed into his hands without explanation.

”Drink that. Yveth’s recipe, for exactly this kind of evening.” She hesitated, then added, quieter, ”Three days is a long dive for someone still this new to it.” ℯℯ𝘭.𝘤ℴ𝘮

”Wasn’t planning on three,” Arlen admitted. ”Floor argued otherwise.”

Yveth herself emerged from the back a short while later, and her sharp, evaluating gaze took in the whole of him with the same brisk efficiency she brought to everything — the careful favoring of his leg, the fresh wear along his armor, the exhaustion he suspected was written plainly enough across his face that pretending otherwise would have been a waste of both their time.

”Sit,” she said, not quite a request, gesturing toward a table near the hearth rather than his usual corner spot. ”Properly, this time. Not just long enough to eat and vanish upstairs.”

Arlen sat, more out of surprise than obedience, and found her settling into the chair across from him with an unhurried attention that felt, for the first time since he’d known her, considerably more personal than the easy, professional banter she usually offered.

”You’ve been gone three days,” she said. ”Rilla noticed. I noticed, if I’m honest, though I wasn’t about to send anyone down after you over a solo dive nobody asked me to worry about.”

”I’m alright,” Arlen said. ”Mostly.”

”Mostly’s doing a lot of work in that sentence.” Her expression didn’t soften exactly, but something behind it did, warm and genuinely concerned beneath the sharp, composed surface she usually kept polished. ”I run an inn full of people who go down into that place and don’t always come back up whole, Arlen. Or at all. You don’t have to tell me everything that happened down there. I’d just rather you didn’t make a habit of vanishing three days without a word, if it’s all the same to you.”

Arlen found himself, sitting across from her in the hearth’s warm, flickering light, genuinely moved by the plain, unadorned honesty of it — not the careful deflection he might have expected, not fussing concern dressed up as business, simply a person telling him clearly that his continued presence mattered to her.

”I’ll try to do better,” he said. ”Word ahead, next time. If I can manage it.”

”That’s all I’m asking.” Yveth rose, the moment settling back into its usual easy rhythm, though something in her expression lingered a beat longer than strictly necessary before she turned toward the kitchen. ”Eat something proper tonight. Sleep even longer. The Depths will still be there once you’ve actually recovered.”

Arlen watched her go, and found himself, alone at the hearth-side table with Rilla’s warm, bitter drink cooling in his hands, thinking that whatever this quiet, growing thread between them actually was, it had settled a little deeper into him tonight than it had before — not dramatic, not sudden, simply real, in the same patient way everything worth having in this life had always proven to be.
