Reborn as an Adventurer: I Gain a Skill From Every Monster I Eat

Chapter 190: Chapter 190 — What the Water Remembers

The parkland channel sat exactly where he’d left it weeks ago, the same secluded bend, the same low stone edge worn smooth by however many quiet afternoons he’d spent here.

Arlen settled against it, sword set aside, and closed his eyes.

Riverblade and Tidal Lance, he thought. Cutting and ranged. See if they want to become one thing.

He reached inward, and found both abilities answering easily, familiar now after weeks of steady use. Riverblade’s close, decisive edge. Tidal Lance’s longer, thrown reach.

He held them side by side, searching for the shared truth the way he had with every fusion before this one.

Something else answered too.

Sovereign Tide stirred alongside them, unbidden, the broad, patient authority he’d carried since Region Three’s deepest stretch. And beneath that, quieter still, Gillbreath — the easy, unhurried comfort of water filling his lungs without complaint.

I wasn’t calling for you two.

They didn’t leave. If anything, they settled closer, the way a conversation settles when everyone realizes they’ve been talking about the same thing from different angles the whole time.

He sat with that a long while, turning it over.

Riverblade cuts. Tidal Lance throws. Sovereign Tide commands. Gillbreath simply lets me belong to water rather than resist it. He turned each one over slowly, cataloguing the shape of it the way he catalogued everything worth understanding properly. Different jobs. Same well.

He thought of Weaver’s Mastery, thread thin enough to bind or precise enough to craft, both drawn from the same simple truth about silk. He thought of Hunter’s Eye, two functions kept whole and separate under one shared roof rather than blended into something smaller than either had been alone.

This felt like neither of those. Closer to something underneath all four at once.

Maybe the four of them aren’t meant to sit side by side anymore, he thought slowly, feeling the shape of the idea before he had proper words for it. Maybe they’re meant to finally admit what they’ve always shared, and become one thing built from all of it together.

He reached for that instead. Not what do these have in common, the question that had unlocked every prior fusion, but a deeper version of it. What are all of you, before you’re anything else at all?

The answer arrived slow and total, nothing like the quick, decisive warmth of his earlier fusions. This built the way a tide builds — patient, inevitable, gathering from someplace far beneath conscious thought until it simply arrived, whole, with nowhere left to recede to.

A name surfaced, certain in the same wordless way every genuine truth about himself had ever arrived.

Water Sovereignty

He sat with it a long moment, breath catching, and reached inward carefully to check what remained.

Riverblade was gone. Tidal Lance was gone. Sovereign Tide and Gillbreath, gone alongside them, all four names folded into something that felt, testing its edges, like a single deep well with four separate buckets still resting somewhere inside it.

He tested it carefully.

He called for the cutting strike first, and felt Water Sovereignty answer with Riverblade’s exact shape — except sharper, cleaner, the current gathering along the edge with a confidence that hadn’t been there before. He tried the thrown bolt next, and Tidal Lance’s old form arrived just as readily, striking a fallen branch downstream with enough force to split it clean where it should have only cracked.

He called on the broad, commanding pull Sovereign Tide had always offered, and the water answered with an ease that made his previous command of it feel, in hindsight, almost hesitant by comparison. He ducked his face beneath the surface last, and felt his breath settle into rhythm faster than it ever had, no transition at all, simply water agreeing to hold him the way air did.

All of it. Still here. Just gathered under one name instead of four.

He sat back against the stone, turning the discovery over with the same careful, methodical attention he gave every genuine breakthrough.

Not a fusion the way the others were. Not two things becoming one smaller thing. Four things finally admitting they were always the same thing, and building something whole out of the admission.

He thought about what that actually meant, going forward, and felt the shape of it settle into place with quiet, mounting certainty.

If a new water ability arrives someday — some fifth thing, pulled from some creature I haven’t even found yet — it won’t need its own separate name. It’ll have somewhere to go. It’ll simply become part of this.

He turned the thought over further, testing it the way he tested every real idea before trusting it.

Every time something new joins it, the whole thing should deepen. Not just add a function. Strengthen everything already living inside it, the same way today already sharpened Riverblade and Tidal Lance both, just from being asked to stand together properly for the first time.

He thought, distantly, of Ember Touch, sitting alone and unconnected to anything else right now, the only fire ability he carried.

Fire could do the same thing eventually. Earth too, once I’ve got enough of it built up. He turned the possibility over slowly, genuine excitement threading through the careful analysis. Every element I understand deeply enough, someday, probably wants its own version of this. One deep well, instead of a dozen scattered names.

He didn’t have the abilities yet to test that properly. Ember Touch alone wasn’t enough — a single voice couldn’t build a foundation under itself. It needed at least one other voice to agree with, the way Riverblade and Tidal Lance had needed Sovereign Tide and Gillbreath standing nearby before any of them had understood what they were actually part of.

Someday, though. Once there’s enough of something else to ask the same question.

He spent the remainder of the afternoon simply testing Water Sovereignty’s range, calling each of its four old functions in turn and finding every one of them answering with the same new, deepened ease — not unrecognizable, just plainly, measurably better at being exactly what they’d always been.

He thought, packing his things as the light began to shift toward evening, about how differently this had unfolded compared to every fusion before it. Not two abilities trading themselves for one. Four abilities finally admitting they’d always been the same water, and becoming, together, the deep place all of it could finally rest.

A well instead of a scatter, he thought, turning the distinction over one final time as he made his way back toward the Foxglove. Worth remembering, the next time I’ve got enough of anything to ask the question properly.

He walked home in the gathering dusk, the parkland’s quiet current still faintly audible behind him, and found himself already looking forward — not with any urgency, simply the same unhurried, patient curiosity that had carried him through every deliberate stage of this life so far — to whatever element eventually gave him enough voices to ask the same question of it, and to whatever quiet, singular name might be waiting on the other side of that answer.
