Reborn as an Adventurer: I Gain a Skill From Every Monster I Eat

Chapter 169: Chapter 169 — Seventh Floor

The descent took the better part of two days, six floors’ worth of familiar ground passing beneath his feet in a steady, practiced rhythm that felt, compared to his first uncertain trip down, almost routine — even knowing the ground didn’t excuse the sheer distance it still demanded of him.

He made camp once, partway through Floor Five, the chamber’s enormous scale asserting itself even on ground he’d already properly learned, and pushed on again the following morning without much ceremony. A Cave Wolf on Floor Three fled before he’d properly decided whether it was worth the effort. A cluster of Razorfin Fish on Floor Six darted clear of his path without needing to be avoided at all.

Strange, how quickly familiar ground can still eat up two full days, he thought, breaking camp on the second morning. Wasn’t so long ago that Floor Three alone felt like the edge of the world. Now it’s just the first quarter of a longer walk.

He reached the ramp down to Floor Seven by midday, the accumulated weight of the journey settling into his legs in a dull, honest ache rather than any genuine exhaustion — conditioning, he supposed, finally paying its due after weeks of exactly this kind of demanding, deliberate travel.

The floor announced itself the moment he stepped off the ramp — not gradually, the way the floors above had eased into their own character, but all at once, the air itself carrying a weight he hadn’t felt since the deepest stretches of Floor Five.

The passage opened almost immediately into a cavern of genuinely staggering scale, taller than anything he’d yet encountered, its ceiling lost entirely in a dark that even Hawk’s Eye’s sharpened clarity couldn’t properly resolve. Massive roots, thick as tree trunks, hung down from somewhere far overhead, disappearing back into shadow before they ever reached the ground. The fungal growth here had changed character too — darker, denser, carrying an unfamiliar, faintly metallic scent that made his stomach tighten with old, well-earned instinct.

Something’s different about this floor. Not just bigger. Different.

He moved carefully, senses stretched as wide as he could manage, and found the first real sign of the shift within the hour — a set of tracks pressed deep into the soft earth, considerably larger than anything a Fungus Deer or Rotfang Boar might have left behind.

Big. Heavy. Whatever made these wasn’t hurrying.

He followed them at a cautious distance rather than directly, curious but unwilling to walk blind into whatever had left them, and found his path crossing instead with something smaller and more immediately manageable — a Giant Spore Toad, easily the size of a large dog, its skin a mottled, sickly green that pulsed faintly with each labored breath.

Rank Four, if the guild notes hold. Toxic cloud, if provoked carelessly.

He circled it with proper respect, staying upwind, and found the creature slow enough that a careful approach cost him little risk. It noticed him only once he’d closed most of the distance, and its throat began to swell with the telltale warning of a coming toxic burst.

He didn’t give it the chance. Storm Step carried him inside its guard before the cloud could fully gather, and Edgeline Strike found the soft tissue beneath its jaw before it managed more than a startled, wet croak.

It died quickly, and Arlen harvested what he could — the toxin glands, worth something to Bellwyn, and a portion of meat besides, though he approached the latter with rather more caution than usual given the creature’s evident chemistry.

He made camp not far past the kill, the cavern’s oppressive scale making him reluctant to push further without proper rest first, and prepared the meat carefully over a low, contained flame.

Careful with this one, he thought, working through the preparation with deliberate attention. Toxic when alive doesn’t always mean safe once it’s dead, but the guild notes didn’t flag anything specific.

He ate slowly, testing his own reaction with each bite, and found nothing more troubling than an odd, faintly bitter aftertaste that lingered longer than the meat itself warranted.

The warmth arrived partway through his second helping, low and familiar, spreading outward with the same patient certainty it always carried.

A name surfaced, whole and certain.

Miasma Ward.

He sat with it a moment, testing the edges of understanding bundled with the name, and found something considerably more specific than Venom Ward’s broader toxin resistance — a felt sense of protection against airborne poisons and noxious vapors particularly, the kind of narrow, purpose-built defense that felt, turning it over carefully, exactly suited to a floor already carrying an unfamiliar, unsettling weight in its very air.

Useful. Especially if whatever left those tracks turns out to breathe something worse than ordinary air.

He tested it as best he could, holding his breath deliberately near the last curling wisps of smoke from his cookfire and finding the sensation considerably less unpleasant than it should have been, some quiet, internal filtering easing the smoke’s usual sting from his throat.

He settled in for the night after that, stringing his usual perimeter with Weaver’s Mastery rather than the older, rougher strands he’d once relied on — the difference immediately apparent, the silk finer and considerably more extensive for the same effort, covering ground his old perimeter would have left dangerously thin.

That’s the fusion earning its keep already, he thought, testing the perimeter’s reach with quiet satisfaction. More coverage, less cost. Exactly what I hoped it might offer.

He pulled his journal from his pack before sleep claimed him, and wrote a careful entry by the low firelight.

Floor Seven, finally, after two full days just getting here. Different from everything above it — bigger, darker, something in the air itself that doesn’t sit easily. Found tracks I haven’t identified yet, considerably larger than anything I’ve fought so far on this floor. Killed a Giant Spore Toad carefully, gained Miasma Ward from it — narrow but well-timed, given how this floor already feels.

I don’t think whatever left those tracks is something I should go looking for carelessly. Tomorrow, I intend to find it anyway. Better to understand what I’m sharing this floor with than to keep pretending I haven’t already noticed.

He closed the journal, checked his perimeter one final time, and let the cavern’s vast, oppressive dark settle around him, the massive, root-draped ceiling stretching out overhead exactly as unknowable as it had been the moment he’d first stepped into it.

Sleep came slower than usual that night, some old, careful instinct refusing to fully settle despite the perimeter’s reassuring presence, and when it finally did arrive, it carried with it the faint, persistent shape of something patient and enormous, waiting somewhere in the cavern’s deeper dark for him to finally come looking.
