Reborn as an Adventurer: I Gain a Skill From Every Monster I Eat

Chapter 158: Chapter 158 — The Ground That Wasn’t

He woke slow and sore, his forearm’s ache faded to a dull, manageable throb, and spent a quiet, unhurried morning testing the edges of his three new acquisitions before finally breaking camp.

Ironshell Grip proved immediate and satisfying — he tested it against a fallen branch, gripping and twisting until the wood splintered with considerably less effort than it should have taken, a faint, dense strength settling into his hands the moment he called on it and fading again just as easily once he let go. Stonebound Stance he confirmed by simply planting his feet and bracing, imagining the difference against every heavy blow that had ever staggered him before, feeling something low and solid anchor itself through his legs the instant he committed his weight properly downward. Silkspinner’s Touch he saved for later, suspecting it would reveal itself more naturally in use than in careful, deliberate experimentation without a proper target.

Fifteen abilities, he thought, shouldering his pack, the weight of everything he now carried settling comfortably despite its sheer accumulated scale. Growing faster down here than it ever did on the surface.

He allowed himself a small, private satisfaction at that before pushing on, the previous evening’s exhaustion burned away by a proper night’s rest, his stride considerably steadier now than it had been climbing into his makeshift camp the day before.

The terrain shifted gradually the further he went — the towering fungal growths thinning in places, giving way to stretches of bare, uneven stone strewn with loose rubble that suggested some old collapse, long since settled and half-forgotten by whatever forces still shaped this floor. The light here carried less of the moss’s blue-green glow and more of a pale, dusty gray, the whole stretch feeling considerably older than the vibrant growth he’d left behind.

He picked his way through it carefully at first, Earthen Grip pressed against the stone underfoot whenever the footing grew uncertain, testing each questionable patch of ground with the same deliberate attention Torv had once drilled into him about reading unfamiliar terrain. He found nothing amiss through the first several minutes of careful passage — solid stone, honest vibration, nothing that gave him pause.

It was a wider, more open stretch that undid his caution — ground that looked, to every sense he had readily available, exactly like the solid stone surrounding it, the vibrations beneath it settling into the same dense, unremarkable pattern as everything he’d already crossed safely. He’d grown comfortable, he realized only afterward, in a way the floor itself apparently hadn’t earned yet.

He put his weight onto it without the second thought he should have spared, and the ground simply wasn’t there.

The crust gave way all at once, no warning crack, no shifting grain to catch his attention first — just a sudden, sickening absence beneath his boot, and then he was falling, the pale gray light above him narrowing rapidly into a shrinking, distant circle.

It was deeper than he expected. Considerably deeper. He struck one jagged outcropping hard on the way down, the impact tearing a ragged line along his ribs even through his armor, the pain a bright, breathless flare that stole whatever scream might otherwise have escaped him, and landed badly at the bottom, his ankle twisting beneath him at an angle that sent white, blinding agony lancing up through his leg the instant his weight settled onto it.

He lay there a long moment, stunned, the breath knocked entirely out of him, dust and loosened stone still trickling down from the hole above in a slow, hissing rain that seemed to take an unreasonably long time to finally settle into silence.

That’s not a natural collapse, he thought, once he’d found enough breath to think clearly at all, forcing himself to take proper stock of the pit around him despite the pain screaming for his full attention. The walls here felt smooth in places that struck him, even through the haze of his own injury, as deliberate rather than accidental — worked stone beneath the natural rubble, the brittle crust overhead thin enough that something must have maintained it that way rather than simply letting a natural weak point persist untended.

Someone made this. Or something did. Recently enough that it hasn’t collapsed properly on its own.

He tested the ankle gingerly and found it considerably worse than he’d first feared — swollen already, the joint refusing outright to bear any real weight, a sharp, grinding wrongness at its center that suggested more than a simple twist. His ribs ached fiercely with every breath, the torn line along them still weeping freely where the outcropping had caught him, and he pressed a hand against it, feeling the shallow but stubborn flow of blood soaking warm into the cloth beneath his fingers.

Careless, he thought, frustration cutting sharp through the pain, sharper than the injury itself in some ways. Should have tested the ground properly before committing my full weight to it. Earthen Grip would have caught this, if I’d actually been using it with intent instead of resting it there out of habit, comfortable and lazy after a good night’s sleep.

He sat back against the pit’s rough wall, forearm still faintly aching from the spider’s venom the night before, and allowed himself, for a long moment, simply to sit with the accumulated cost of a floor that had, in the space of a single day and night, taken considerably more from him than the three above it combined.

Mireflow’s working on it already, he noted, watching the swelling along his ribs ease by slow, grudging fractions rather than vanishing outright, the pain dulling by degrees too gradual to properly track moment to moment. Slow, against something this deep. Not nothing, though. Small mercy.

He weighed his options carefully, the way he weighed everything now — press on despite the injury and risk making it considerably worse, or find some way to properly rest here until his body caught up with the damage it had just taken. Neither option carried much appeal, trapped as he was at the bottom of a hole he hadn’t chosen and couldn’t yet see a clean way out of.

Above him, the opening he’d fallen through let in a thin, distant thread of the chamber’s ambient fungal glow, faint enough now that he suspected considerable time had passed since his fall without his properly noticing it. Around him, the pit’s smooth, deliberate walls offered no easy answer as to who or what had built it, or why, or how long it had been waiting here, patient and unseen, for exactly this kind of careless, unlucky step.

He closed his eyes a moment, breathing through the worst of the pain, and made himself think clearly despite it.

First, the bleeding. Then the ankle. Then I worry about climbing.
