Reborn as an Adventurer: I Gain a Skill From Every Monster I Eat

Chapter 180: Chapter 180 — What the Water Teaches

They broke camp early on Floor Eleven, the air pocket’s dry stone shelf giving way once more to the flooded passage’s patient, dark current, and Arlen found himself, sinking back beneath the surface, considerably more comfortable with the whole strange business than he’d been the day before.

Getting the hang of it, he thought, matching Grennig’s steady, economical stroke rather than fighting the water outright. Just needed the right people showing me how.

The passage widened gradually as they swam, the current easing into something gentler, and Ilyana called a brief pause near a cluster of pale, glowing coral formations rising from the passage floor.

”Good spot to practice actual technique,” she said, treading water easily. ”Fighting underwater’s not the same as fighting on dry ground, whatever your instincts want to tell you. Watch.”

She demonstrated with her spear, the thrust considerably slower and more deliberate than anything Arlen had seen from her in open combat, the water’s resistance shaping every motion into something more patient, more economical.

”Water fights back against anything fast,” she explained. ”Quick strikes lose most of their force before they land. Slower, more committed motions carry through properly.”

Arlen tried it, and found her point immediately, viscerally obvious — his usual quick, precise strike arriving with barely a fraction of its ordinary force. A second, slower attempt carried considerably more genuine weight. ℴ

A cluster of pale, segmented shapes clung to the passage wall ahead, their shells catching the ambient bioluminescence in dull, mottled patterns.

”Crystal Jellyfish,” Osric identified. ”Paralytic sting, mild electrical discharge if provoked. Good practice, low risk. Want to try what Ilyana just showed you?”

Arlen approached carefully, applying the same slow, deliberate technique, and found the creature’s sluggish, drifting movement easy enough to track. He drove a careful, committed strike toward its central mass, and felt the blade connect with real, satisfying force despite the water’s resistance.

It convulsed, a faint electrical charge crackling harmlessly against his blade, and went still.

”Clean,” Grennig said, genuinely approving. ”Better than my own first attempt at one of those, years back.”

They pressed on, and it was later that same day, the ambient light beginning its slow dim toward evening, when Osric flagged something with rather more interest.

”There,” he said, pointing toward a shape drifting near the chamber’s far wall — elongated, covered in fine, iridescent scales scattering the dim light into shifting, rainbow patterns.

”Prismatic Serpent,” Ilyana said. ”Light refraction, mostly. Genuinely tricky if you’re relying on sight alone. Want to test that stealth ability of yours against something built specifically to confuse the eye?”

Arlen called on Hunter’s Eye’s passive clarity first, and found even his enhanced sight struggling properly to track the serpent’s actual shape against the dazzling visual noise its own scales produced.

Not sight, then.

He switched to Shadow Sense instead, the ability answering with its familiar, wordless certainty, and found the serpent’s actual presence considerably easier to locate through that quieter sense — a felt awareness of movement and mass the creature’s scales couldn’t properly disguise.

He closed the distance and finished it with two clean, committed strikes.

”Good work,” Ilyana said. ”Most people rely entirely on sight down here and struggle badly against something like that.”

They made camp not long after.

It was a pack of Deepwater Leeches — easily two dozen strong, Rank Two individually but genuinely threatening in numbers — that greeted them the following morning as they pushed deeper toward Floor Twelve.

”Pack hunters,” Osric said, already weaving a low ward around the group. ”Hold formation.”

Grennig anchored the center, his shield sweeping in slow, deliberate arcs. Rurik tore through the swarm’s edges with brutal efficiency, and Arlen added what he could to the formation’s flanks, his slower, more committed strikes finding their marks where his old instincts would have wasted themselves.

”Not worth eating, those,” Kess said afterward, noting his glance toward the scattered remains. ”Common as anything, and there’s too many to bother sorting through. Some fights are just fights.”

They descended toward Floor Twelve over the following days, the terrain shifting with each new stretch, and more than once the party gave wide, unanimous berth to some distant, massive shape moving through deeper water without needing to discuss it.

”Not everything down here is ours to fight,” Osric said, the first time it happened. ”Best lesson Region Three teaches — knowing which fights are actually yours.”

It was on the third day past the leech swarm that Arlen encountered something worth his own particular attention — a lone, eel-like creature larger than either the jellyfish or the serpent, its body a smooth, dark blue that shimmered faintly with each slow undulation.

”Flood Serpent,” Ilyana identified. ”Water manipulation, mostly. Rank Four. Yours, if you want it.”

The fight proved considerably more demanding, the serpent’s own water-command working directly against his attempts to close the distance, currents surging unpredictably around him with every step. He held his ground with Stonebound Stance’s steady support, and finished it with the same patient, committed strike Ilyana had taught him days earlier.

He harvested what he could, and made camp with the others not long after, eating slowly, curious as always.

The warmth arrived partway through his meal, low and familiar, spreading outward with the same patient certainty it always carried.

A name surfaced, whole and certain.

Riverblade

He sat with it a moment, and understood, immediately and completely, exactly what it offered — water gathered and compressed into something sharp, something meant to cut rather than simply redirect or restrain. The knowledge arrived whole, the same wordless certainty every ability had ever carried with it, nothing left uncertain or unclear.

Genuinely useful. Genuinely new, too — nothing else I carry actually attacks like this.

He didn’t call on it, though, not even to feel its shape properly settle into motion. Five people sat within easy sight of him, and a water-shaping strike this deliberate, arriving from someone they’d only ever seen fight with a blade and modest Aura technique, was exactly the kind of thing that invited a second glance he didn’t need tonight.

Better at home. Quiet parkland, nobody watching how easily it comes to me.

He filed the understanding away carefully, satisfied simply to know its shape, and found himself, settling in for the night’s rest, genuinely pleased by how thoroughly this stretch of the trip had already reshaped his sense of what Region Three actually demanded — not desperate survival, but steady, accumulated competence, taught properly rather than earned through painful trial alone.
