Reborn as an Adventurer: I Gain a Skill From Every Monster I Eat

Chapter 157: Chapter 157 — What the Night Gave Him

The Bloodcap Spider found him before he’d gotten around to eating at all, dropping from the fungal canopy with no warning as the light beyond the fire’s reach began its slow slide toward true dark.

Arlen was on his feet before it fully landed, sword already rising, the fire’s low glow throwing the creature’s bulbous, crimson abdomen into sharp, unsettling relief.

Rank Four, he thought, backing a step to buy himself room. Strong silk, venom. Not something to rush.

It struck first, a line of silk lashing toward his legs, and he sidestepped clean, Hawk’s Eye tracking the strand’s path even in the uneven firelight. He drove Edgeline Strike toward its foremost leg, and the spider skittered back with surprising speed, putting distance between them before he could properly connect.

It circled him then, patient in a way that unsettled him more than an outright charge would have — eight eyes catching the firelight in a dull, wet gleam, its legs testing the ground with slow, deliberate precision rather than any hurried scramble.

Testing me. Same as everything else down here that’s smart enough to bother.

He circled with it, refusing to be the one who broke position first, and found himself thinking, unbidden, of a different patient predator entirely — a mottled gray-brown shape stalking him across four sleepless nights on the road to Aurenholt. This felt smaller in scale, but not so different in spirit.

It struck again, faster — silk and fangs together in a single coordinated lunge — and Arlen threw himself sideways, not quite far enough. A fang grazed his forearm, shallow but enough to draw blood, and a hot, spreading sting settled into the wound almost immediately.

Venom. Manageable. Keep moving.

He gathered Ember Touch along his blade as he retreated a step, and when the spider lunged again, he met it rather than dodged — driving the heated strike directly into its exposed foreleg joint. It shrieked, a high, chittering sound, recoiling hard enough that its own silk-line snapped taut and useless against the cavern floor.

He pressed the opening immediately, Storm Step carrying him inside its guard before it could recover, and finished it with a clean, decisive strike through its thorax.

The spider’s legs curled slowly inward as it died, the whole massive shape settling into stillness with a soft, final rustle against the cavern floor.

Arlen stood over it, breathing hard, forearm throbbing where the venom had settled in. He bound the wound as best he could with a strip torn from his spare cloth, tight enough to slow the spreading heat without cutting off feeling entirely, and knelt to examine the fallen creature properly before exhaustion could talk him out of the effort.

The silk glands sat clustered near the abdomen’s base, and he worked them free with careful, patient cuts, the same unhurried attention he gave every harvest now regardless of how tired his hands actually were. A portion of the abdomen’s tougher hide came away cleanly as well, dense enough that he suspected Bellwyn would find it worth her time.

He sat back down near his fire once the harvesting was done, exhaustion catching up with him all at once now that the danger had properly passed, his whole body settling into the particular, hollowed-out tiredness that always followed real fear once it finally let go.

Hunger arrived sharp on its heels, the way it always did.

He cooked the beetle meat first, working the flame low and careful, and found the flavor rich and faintly nutty, considerably better than he’d expected from something that had spent its whole life burrowing through fungal rot. The turtle’s cut came next, tougher, needing longer over the fire before it softened properly, and finally a careful portion of the spider’s own flesh, pale and faintly translucent, which he approached with rather more caution than the other two.

Worth documenting properly, eventually, he thought, working through the meal with the same deliberate attention he gave every new creature — curiosity as much a part of the ritual now as the practical need to eat, even exhausted and aching as he was. Ysolde would have opinions about all three, if she were here to taste them.

The warmth arrived three times before he finally allowed himself sleep, each one settling into him with the same patient, wordless certainty as always, though this time layered close enough together that he barely had time to properly settle into one before the next began building beneath it.

Ironshell Grip came first, from the beetle — a hardening strength through his hands and forearms when he called on it, the same dense resilience its mandibles had carried into death. He flexed his fingers experimentally, feeling nothing different in the moment, though he trusted, the way he’d learned to trust every previous arrival, that it would prove itself properly once tested against something worth testing it on.

Stonebound Stance followed, from the turtle — a grounded, immovable steadiness settling into his legs and core, planting him against force that would otherwise have staggered him. He thought of Grennig’s shield holding fast against a Blindfang Lizard’s charge, and wondered whether this might offer something similar, in its own quieter way.

Silkspinner’s Touch came last, from the spider — a finer, more deliberate control over thread and binding than Web-Silk Binding’s rougher strands had ever offered, precise enough, he suspected, to work almost like a craftsman’s tool rather than a simple restraint. He thought of Kellan’s exacting hands at the forge, and found the comparison oddly fitting.

He sat with all three a long while after the last one settled, turning each over with careful, methodical attention despite his mounting exhaustion, cataloguing what little he could already sense about them the way he’d catalogued every ability before this one.

Fifteen, now, he thought, the number settling into him with quiet satisfaction as sleep finally began to claim him in earnest. Fifteen, and I haven’t even properly started this floor.

He banked the fire low, checked the web-silk perimeter one final time by feel rather than sight, and let sleep take him fully — the vast, patient dark of Floor Five stretching out around him, indifferent and enormous, waiting for whatever the morning still had left to offer.

The perimeter held silent and undisturbed through the rest of the night. Arlen slept deeper than he had in days, three new names settling quietly into the growing shape of everything he carried, and dreamed, distantly and without any particular alarm, of stone that gave way beneath careless feet.
