Reborn as an Adventurer: I Gain a Skill From Every Monster I Eat

Chapter 176: Chapter 176 — Three Days

He spent the first of his three days simply resting, true to his word, though by the second morning the familiar, patient itch of unfinished business had settled back into him.

Miasma Ward and Venom Ward, he thought, turning the pairing over as he dressed. Both resistance. Both narrow, in their own way — one against poison in the blood, one against poison in the air. Close enough to be worth the question, maybe.

He made his way to the parkland’s quiet channel once more, the same secluded bend that had already given him two successful fusions, and settled into the same patient, unhurried search.

Venom Ward answered first, familiar now after weeks of carrying it — a felt sense of his own blood resisting toxins that would otherwise take hold. Miasma Ward rose beside it, narrower but no less real, protection specifically against what traveled on the air rather than through a wound.

He held both in his attention, and found, turning the comparison over carefully, that they sat closer together than any pairing except the silk abilities had — not identical, but clearly cut from the same cloth.

Same shared truth as Weaver’s Mastery, probably. Not a progression. Just two expressions of the same idea — the body refusing what shouldn’t be allowed to settle into it.

He reached for the understanding rather than forcing it, the way he’d learned to with every fusion so far.

Resistance. That’s all either of them has ever actually been. Doesn’t matter whether the poison arrives through a bite or a breath.

The warmth arrived quickly, gentler than either previous attempt, exactly as he’d expected given how little space had separated the two abilities to begin with.

A name surfaced, whole and certain.

Tainted Ward.

He sat with it a long moment, testing its edges, and found both Venom Ward and Miasma Ward gone, replaced by something that felt, reaching for it experimentally, like a single, unified resistance covering both categories at once — broader than either source, and, testing it faintly against the memory of the Bloodcap Spider’s venom, considerably more capable than the narrower version that had let that particular toxin through weeks earlier.

Might have held against that fight, if I’d had this instead. Worth remembering.

He spent the remainder of that second day simply resting again, the fusion’s cost settling into him with the same quiet exhaustion he’d come to expect, and turned his attention, on the morning of his third day, to a pairing he’d been considering more cautiously than any before it.

Hawk’s Eye and Nightsight. Both sight. Not identical — one’s active and long-range, one’s passive and close. Might work the way the water abilities did. A progression, not an identity.

He returned to the parkland one final time, and reached inward with the same careful, patient attention.

Hawk’s Eye answered with its familiar, sharpened clarity, the deliberate effort of calling on it settling into his awareness exactly as it always had. Nightsight rose beside it, quieter, constant, requiring nothing at all to maintain.

He held both, and found the relationship considerably more complicated than the silk or resistance pairings had been — not quite identical, not quite a clean progression either, but something closer to two halves of the same larger function, one covering what the other couldn’t reach.

Distance and darkness. Different problems, but both about seeing what shouldn’t be visible.

He tried the identity approach first, and found it produced nothing — the two abilities simply too different in their actual mechanism, one active and costly, one passive and constant, to collapse into a single shared truth that easily.

He tried the progression approach next, treating Nightsight as a foundation and Hawk’s Eye as its natural extension, and felt something shift, faint but real, though it didn’t settle into the full, certain warmth of a genuine breakthrough.

Close. Not quite there. Wrong question, maybe.

He sat back, turning the failure over instead of pushing through it. Every fusion so far had asked him to find what two abilities secretly shared — identity, or progression, or near-total overlap. This pairing kept refusing both, and he understood, sitting with the frustration rather than fighting it, that the fault might not lie in the two abilities at all.

Maybe I’m asking them to become the same thing. Maybe they were never supposed to.

He thought of Kellan, fitting two different metals into a single blade rather than melting them into one uniform alloy — each retaining its own particular strength, joined rather than dissolved.

Not a merger. A partnership held under one roof.

He reached inward again, and this time asked a different question entirely — not what the two abilities shared, but whether they might simply agree to answer the same call, distinct and undiminished, rather than becoming some single, compromised third thing.

The warmth arrived slowly this time, careful and deliberate, nothing like the quick certainty of his easier fusions — more like two separate flames drawing close enough to share a single hearth without ever actually merging into one fire.

A name surfaced, whole and certain.

Hunter’s Eye.

He sat with it a long moment, testing its edges carefully, and found something he hadn’t quite expected. Hawk’s Eye and Nightsight were both gone as separate names, but neither function had actually vanished. He could feel Nightsight’s quiet, passive clarity still settled into the edges of his ordinary vision, unchanged and effortless. And when he deliberately reached for something sharper, the same active, costly precision Hawk’s Eye had always offered rose to meet him, distinct and undiluted, simply gathered now beneath a single name and a single, willed control.

Both, still. Not blended. Just — organized. One name to reach for, instead of two.

He tested it carefully, letting his ordinary sight settle back into Nightsight’s passive ease, then calling deliberately on the sharper, active clarity and finding it answer exactly as it always had, costing him precisely what it always cost, no more and no less.

That’s different from the others. Those blended into something new. This one just filed two things under the same door.

He turned the distinction over with genuine fascination, understanding, for the first time, that fusion might not always mean the same kind of joining — sometimes a shared truth, sometimes a progression, and now, apparently, sometimes simply a shared home for two things that worked better staying themselves.

Good to know. Especially if I’m going to keep doing this for years yet. Not everything needs to lose its shape to be worth combining.

He made his way back toward the Foxglove that evening, the accumulated work of three days settling comfortably into him alongside two new fusions and a genuinely useful lesson about the mechanic’s actual range.

Yveth caught him at the door, studying him with her usual sharp, evaluating attention. ”You’ve got that look again. The parkland look.”

”Productive few days,” Arlen admitted. ”Two puzzles solved, one of them considerably more stubborn than the rest.”

”Cryptic, as ever.” She studied him a moment longer, something warm settling beneath her usual teasing. ”Ready for tomorrow?”

”As ready as three days of quiet thinking can make me.”

”That’ll have to do, then.” She offered a parting smile, and Arlen made his way upstairs to properly pack for the first time in weeks, his kit lighter by several names and richer by three others, ready, as much as careful preparation could make him, for whatever Floor Ten and everything beyond it still had waiting.
