Reborn as an Adventurer: I Gain a Skill From Every Monster I Eat

Chapter 188: Chapter 188 — What Settled Into Place, Twice

Neris looked up when he knocked, two days exactly since their last session, and gestured him in without much ceremony.

”You’re early,” she said. ”Barely, but early.”

”Habit.” He settled onto the cushion across from her, the same spot he always took.

”Good habit to have.” She studied him a moment, the same brief, practical attention she brought to the start of every lesson. ”Draw a thread for me before we start today’s proper work. Let’s see where you’re standing.”

He drew it, the same way he had two days before, and held it without much effort.

Neris watched, quiet, then nodded to herself. ”Steadier again. You’re not just holding it now. You’re sitting comfortably inside it.”

”Is that good?”

”It’s the kind of thing I usually see right before someone tells me they’ve been feeling strange pressure low in their stomach for a few days.” She said it lightly, though her eyes stayed sharp. ”Have you?”

Arlen considered the question honestly. He had noticed something, these past two days — a faint, cool weight settling deeper each time he practiced, patient and unhurried. He hadn’t thought much of it beyond simple progress.

”Something like that,” he admitted.

”Then I think you’re closer to your Mana Core than either of us expected this soon.” Neris sat back, satisfied rather than surprised. ”I won’t pretend I can walk you through the actual breakthrough — that part’s always personal, always private. But I can tell you it’s close, and I can tell you where to go once you’re ready to try for it properly.”

”The breakthrough wing.”

”You’ve been through this once already, on the Aura side. Same process. Same discretion.” She waved a hand, unbothered. ”Go today, if you’re feeling it. No sense making an appointment out of something your own body’s already decided is due.”

”You’re not curious to see it happen yourself?”

”I’ve seen plenty of breakthroughs. They’re not much to watch from the outside — someone sits very still for a while, and then they don’t.” Neris allowed herself a small, dry smile. ”The interesting part happens where I can’t follow. I’d rather hear about it from you afterward, once you’ve had time to actually understand what you’re carrying, than watch you sit there with my curiosity pressing on you the whole while.”

Arlen thanked her, genuinely, and rose from the cushion.

”One more thing,” Neris said, before he reached the door. ”Don’t rush the testing afterward, whatever you feel the moment it settles. Novices who push too hard too fast, first day, tend to exhaust themselves for nothing. Confirm it. Rest. The rest can wait until tomorrow.”

”I’ll remember that.”

”See that you do. I’d rather not have to explain to Corwin why my student collapsed in a hallway the same week his did.”

He made his way to the breakthrough wing that same afternoon, gear already collected from Kellan the evening before, nothing left pending except this.

The booking clerk took his name, checked her ledger, and handed him a key without any particular interest in either.

”Room four,” she said.

He took it, and made his way down the quiet, warded corridor, and shut the door behind him with the same soft, solid click he remembered.

He settled onto the cushion and closed his eyes.

He didn’t reach for anything specific. He simply sat, and breathed, letting his attention drift toward that small, cool point low in his stomach where the current always gathered first.

It answered easily, easier than it ever had two days ago, and he held it there, patient, the way he’d learned to hold Enduring Vitality’s warmth in this same room, chasing a different breakthrough entirely.

He thought about everything the current had already taught him. The careful shape of Mana Light. The quiet, listening pull of Mana Sense reading age and craft off a stretch of wall.

He thought, too, about four straight weeks with water pressing steady against his skin, cold and constant, never quite letting him step fully clear of the very thing Mana drew from in the first place.

The thread deepened.

It didn’t happen all at once. It gathered slowly, weight settling lower and lower until it found a floor to rest on. He felt it reach that same low point in his stomach, press there, testing the space the way water tests the edges of a container before finally filling it.

Then it filled it.

Something folded inward, quiet and complete, the same unhurried finality he remembered from the night his Aura Heart had settled into his chest — except this time the weight gathered lower, cooler, a steady pressure just beneath his navel.

He sat with it a long moment before opening his eyes.

He didn’t need anyone to confirm it. He simply knew.

He tested it carefully. He drew a thread up from that new, settled point rather than searching for it loose in the air, and it came faster, cleaner, no hesitation at the edges.

He cast Mana Light without deciding to. The point of pale light bloomed brighter than anything he’d managed in Neris’s classroom, steadier too, unbothered by his own breathing.

He let it fade, and reached for Mana Sense next. The pulse went out and returned almost instantly, the wall’s information arriving whole and clear rather than the vague impression he was used to parsing through effort.

Novice, he thought, and let the word settle quietly, no need to say it aloud to make it true.

He sat there a while longer, testing the shape of it, thinking about how differently this breakthrough had arrived compared to his Aura Heart’s. That one had come from breadth — ten separate abilities stacked together until sheer variety forced a foundation into place. This one had come from something quieter. Just time spent living inside the thing itself, day after day, never fully stepping clear of it.

He thought about trying one more spell, curious how far the new steadiness actually stretched, and remembered Neris’s warning instead. Confirm it. Rest. The rest could wait.

He rose eventually, legs stiff from sitting longer than he’d realized, and made his way back out.

He returned the key. He left. That was the whole of it.

He walked back through the guild hall’s ordinary noise, the contrast striking fresh the way it always did after that corridor’s total quiet, and found a steadiness under his ribs that hadn’t been there that morning — low and cool, sitting beside the warmth at his sternum like two halves of the same coin, finally minted properly.

He decided to tell Neris at their next session rather than rushing back today. Two days had taught him that patience, more than urgency, was usually the better use of good news.

He made his way toward the Foxglove instead, the evening settling gold and easy over the rooftops, and found himself smiling the rest of the way there. Whatever tomorrow’s testing revealed, tonight belonged to nothing more complicated than a quiet walk home and the simple, settled satisfaction of a promise finally kept.
