I Became a Medical Genius in the 80s

Chapter 54: Chapter 54: How Old Is Your Little Brother?

Beisitian turned her head to look at him, a trace of doubt flashed through her clear eyes.

Zhou Jiren met those eyes that seemed to see through the human heart, and smiled slightly, ”Anti-inflammatory drugs should not be used casually; while they work quickly, their side effects can be quite significant. They must be prescribed according to the patient’s conditions.”

Beisitian nodded to herself, indeed, she heard that Western medicine acts quickly, sometimes a few pills are enough to be effective, but the side effects are also considerable.

Upon hearing Zhou Jiren’s explanation, the trace of doubt in her heart dissipated.

”The injured one is my younger brother, a child,” Beisitian informed truthfully.

Zhou Jiren handed the medicine over to Beisitian, ”Younger brother?”

”Yes.”

Beisitian took the medicine, turned it over, and found the dosage instructions on it, her attention caught by it. She didn’t notice the odd expression that flashed across Zhou Jiren’s face when he mentioned ’younger brother’.

The instructions outlined the dosage for children, and Beisitian smiled.

”How old is your brother?” Zhou Jiren asked, then added, ”If he’s too young, he shouldn’t take too much of it.”

Beisitian looked up and smiled, ”I saw the instructions stated it, this is quite convenient. Thank you, Mr. Zhou, how much is this medicine? I’ll buy half a box.”

”Five yuan.” Zhou Jiren looked at Beisitian, slightly parted his lips, and finally swallowed the question he wanted to ask.

Beisitian secretly clicked her tongue, half a box only contains six tablets, and it costs five yuan!

Previously, when buying medicine from Yang Wulang, it was ten cents for two tablets, ten cents for one tablet, and the expensive ones were two or three cents per tablet; this five yuan for six tablets was equivalent to over eight cents per tablet!

No wonder Yang Wulang showed that kind of expression, even quarreled with his wife to borrow money, this anti-inflammatory drug is really too expensive!

Beisitian paid the money and greeted before leaving Jishi Pharmacy, Zhou Jiren stood in the hall, thoughtfully watching her back.

Beisitian didn’t return directly to the village but went to the traditional Chinese medicine shop to grab some herbs which were auxiliary to her talisman making.

The precious herbs were naturally unavailable; however, the common herbs were. Buying two packets of herbs cost less than three yuan, which showed how truly expensive Western medicine was.

Beisitian didn’t delay anymore; this time, she didn’t take the mule cart but caught the noon bus.

It was her first time riding in this four-wheeled iron box of a bus. Compared to horse carts and mule carts, which are manpower vehicles, the bus was indeed much faster and less bumpy, and wasn’t much affected by wind or rain.

However, the heavy body odor inside the bus made Beisitian nauseous, not just the body odor, but also a peculiar smell wafting around, making her feel like vomiting.

Fortunately, the bus was fast; she reached the station before she couldn’t hold on, stepped off to inhale deeply the refreshing air, and quickly headed down Dayan, walking toward the village.

On the road into the village, Beisitian saw Zhang Shuncai carrying a shovel and coming from nearby.

”Hey, isn’t this the little widow... Little Tian’er? I heard about what happened to your brother, how is he now?” Zhang Shuncai stopped, put down the shovel, and leaned it on the ground.

Beisitian looked at him; Zhang Shuncai’s face didn’t have a mocking expression, and he asked the question seriously without showing any schadenfreude.

”Still hasn’t woken up.” Beisitian replied.

”This is really something, the kid was too naughty, what was he doing in the mountains? We’ll have to manage better in the future, what did Yang Wulang say, there should be no major issues, right?”

Beisitian remained silent; whatever Yang Wulang said was surely known throughout Kao Village.

”Don’t be too upset, boys are always mischievous. Alright, I have to head to the fields now, I’ll be off.” Zhang Shuncai picked up his shovel and walked toward Dayan.

Beisitian turned around, looking at Zhang Shuncai’s back; usually when he saw her, he treated her like air, completely ignoring her. Why suddenly such concern today?

Her gaze cooled slightly, she took one last look at Zhang Shuncai before turning to walk toward home.

Back home, Beisitian felt a deeply oppressive emotion overwhelming her. She knew Mrs. Qin and Luo Anguo couldn’t quite accept this incident. Although Luo Anping’s life was saved at the time, Yang Wulang also bluntly spoke, the next hurdle ahead wasn’t easy.

The wound was likely to become infected, high fever is not feared, but if it doesn’t subside, it would really be troublesome. Anti-inflammatory drugs were just possibly one way to endure through, but even going to the hospital, the survival chances weren’t big, considering the child is too young, the wound too deep.

Yang Wulang didn’t want to give the couple false hope and then break it again, which would be too cruel, so he just said it all at once, allowing them to prepare mentally.

In fact, he didn’t hold an optimistic view internally, feeling Luo Anping might not make it through.

As soon as Beisitian entered the courtyard, she heard Mrs. Qin’s crying, she hurriedly walked inside to the east room.

Upon entering, she saw Luo Anping lying on the kang with flushed cheeks, obviously starting to have a fever.

Luo Anguo wasn’t in the mood to roll cigarettes anymore, sitting dazedly on the kang, his eyes empty of life.

Beisitian had no doubt, if Luo Anping couldn’t make it through, this couple might well follow after him.

In rural areas, children are the most cherished; once born, everything hinges upon them; when the child’s gone, hope is gone too, making life meaningless.

Beisitian didn’t bother to console them much; at this time, anything said would be in vain.

She examined Luo Anping’s wound, already turning red, she returned to the west room, and closed the thin board door.

She barred the main door; Mrs. Qin and Luo Anguo weren’t in the mood to care about other matters, she decided to perform Spiritual Pointing with the Success Talisman now.

Having a period of talisman making experience, adaptability was no longer an issue. Beisitian, as if she was in her previous life, executed a series of skilled and graceful movements, swiftly producing three Xuan Talismans.

Since her ability to make Xuan Talismans was limited due to her current spirit, she played safe and made three Xuan Talismans only for cleansing the wound, these would be turned into talismanic water to apply to Luo Anping’s injury, providing substantial protective measures.

This type of Xuan Talisman clears internal impurities in the wound, that is, this place refers to bacteria, but the wound needs to be stable first, hence why she was making talismans just now.

Turning a Xuan Talisman into talismanic water, Beisitian carried a small bowl and began applying it to Luo Anping. She didn’t use much clear water; the liquid was a bit thick to adhere better to the skin.

Though a bit wasted, most of the talismanic water was applied by Beisitian, and once the talismanic water dried, it would form a special protective film.

A total of three Xuan Talismans made up one day’s worth of treatment.

Mrs. Qin and Luo Anguo, one with a dazed gaze silently shedding tears, the other with an empty stare absent-minded. They seemed oblivious to Beisitian’s actions.

Beisitian didn’t have time to mind them for now. After completing her task, she wiped a thin sheen of sweat from her forehead and prepared to rest. Nearing evening, she planned to make healing Xuan Talismans, with these, it would need to be used alongside anti-inflammatory medication.
