I Became a Medical Genius in the 80s

Chapter 46: Chapter 46: Zhou Tian

Mrs. Qin is not naive, Beisitian knew she couldn’t hide it from her, so she told her about going into the mountain.

Mrs. Qin and Luo Anguo were taken aback, this child was so bold to have ventured into the mountain alone without saying a word!

Naturally, Beisitian got a scolding, and even Luo Anguo joined Mrs. Qin in giving her a stern lecture.

To divert their attention, Beisitian quickly brought out the Polygonum multiflorum and told them it was a very precious medicinal herb. Consuming it could strengthen the body, especially beneficial for the young and old like Luo Anguo, Luo Anping, and Beisitian’s own frail physique, and the leftovers could be sold for money.

It was the first time the couple had seen Polygonum multiflorum and they examined it carefully in their hands.

”Doesn’t it look like a potato?” Mrs. Qin glanced at it and said.

”What potato is this big! Isn’t this a sweet potato?” Luo Anping leaned on the edge of the kang and peered at it.

Luo Anguo remained silent. Although he hadn’t farmed for many years, he knew this was neither a sweet potato nor a potato. However, this unassuming plant, still covered with dirt, was indeed five hundred-year-old Polygonum multiflorum!

If it were them, even if they saw a piece on the ground, they would probably pick it up and cook it as sweet potato porridge.

Beisitian advised them not to tell anyone, especially Luo Anping. She feared not only thieves but also those with malicious intentions.

Luo Anguo knew that among the ”thieves” she mentioned was Qin Hongmei, and if she found out about this golden treasure in the house, she’d probably steal it and sell it, regardless of familial ties!

As they returned home late, Mrs. Qin had already prepared dinner, and while eating, Beisitian carefully mentioned seeing an old man in the mountains.

She didn’t mention encountering a bear or wolf-dog; it was too thrilling, and if she said it, it would be difficult to go into the mountains again.

Upon hearing this, Mrs. Qin asked Beisitian about the person’s features in detail, then exchanged a glance with Luo Anguo.

”Is it him?”

”It must be! Who else would live deep in the mountains?”

Seeing them being mysterious, Beisitian felt a strong curiosity and quickly asked who it was.

”Little Tian’er, if you see that person again, stay far away!” Luo Anguo said sternly.

Beisitian paused and asked why.

Mrs. Qin had finished eating early, picked up her braid and started braiding, saying, ”That person used to be from our village, living just an alley away from your family, and raised a pack of wolves. No matter how tame, a wolf is still a wolf, not human. When they grew up, they started bothering poultry, eating a chicken today, killing a duck tomorrow, causing unrest in the village.”

Beisitian listened quietly.

The village committee went to find him several times, but to no avail. The man insisted on keeping those animals. At that time, the village chief was a tough one, not Director Xu, and he issued an ultimatum, telling him to either release the wolves back into the wild or leave with them!

The man’s name was Zhou Tian, a stubborn mule who, upon hearing this, really took his pack of wolves into the deep mountains and never returned!

Later, hunters from the village saw him, said he was unkempt, wearing leaves for clothing, resembling neither human nor ghost.

It’s said that some even chatted with him in the mountains, claiming he wasn’t the Zhou Tian from before, being peculiar and sinister, much like a wolf!

Some even claimed to see him eat raw animals, consuming flesh and blood like his wolves, indistinguishable from them.

In recent years, no hunters have seen him, with rumors saying he was eaten by the animals he raised.

Now that Beisitian mentioned it, both were surprised. Mrs. Qin recalled the rumors from over the years, feeling a bit terrified.

Zhou Tian was still alive, not eaten by his wolves, but having lived deep in the mountains for over a decade, who knows what he has become!

”Better not go into the mountain again; what if you encounter him!” Mrs. Qin said with lingering fear.

Beisitian couldn’t agree; how could she not go into the mountains!

Those so-called wolves were probably the wolf-dogs she saw; they indeed were fierce and easily mistaken for wolves.

The following morning, after drinking a big bowl of cornmeal porridge, Beisitian cut a bit of Polygonum multiflorum to soak and prepared to add it to the soup for lunch, then went to the eastern room to practice calligraphy.

Beisitian is currently focusing on practicing penmanship. Luo Anguo taught her to start from the basics. She learned quickly; after all, she wasn’t a novice. Once she grasped the pen’s stroke force, writing wasn’t difficult, though mastering it would require some effort.

There were no copybooks available for Beisitian to practice from, otherwise, she would learn faster.

Luo Anguo also said that if possible, it would be best to buy some copybooks; that would be the way to truly learn well.

Beisitian kept this in mind, planning to buy some next time she went to Qingzhou Town.

While thinking about this, she suddenly heard commotion outside and a voice at the door shouted, ”Lock up your chickens and ducks, keep an eye on the children, a wolf came into the village!”

A strong-voiced young man was shouting through the alley; such things were usually not broadcast through loudspeakers.

Hearing this, Mrs. Qin hurriedly got up, shouted to Beisitian to quickly close the main gate.

Beisitian got off the kang, put on her shoes, ran out to close the gate, feeling uneasy, thinking of the wolf-dogs. Could it be those big guys came?

But it shouldn’t be, why would they come? To express gratitude?

Beisitian didn’t believe that. The wolf-dogs, though intelligent, may not understand gratitude. If they did, they wouldn’t have caused their owner to retreat into the mountains years ago.

Even thinking so, Beisitian couldn’t shake off her concern, and she called back into the house that she was going out to take a look, bolted the door from the outside, and headed toward the village road.

Many people came out to watch the spectacle. It wasn’t the first time animals wandered from the mountain into the village; as long as they weren’t too many or brought a bear, there was no real harm. Even if they came, with so many able-bodied men in the village, they couldn’t truly harm anyone!

Beisitian followed the villagers towards the North Slope, where many men were armed with sticks, sickles, and kitchen knives, yelling fiercely towards the slope.

Looking over, Beisitian saw a large creature standing there warily looking at the villagers; it really was a wolf-dog!

And judging by its appearance, it seemed to be the one that had recently become a mother, currently in a vulnerable state. Why did it run out?

The wolf-dog seemed to see Beisitian among the crowd, let out a howl, circled on the spot a few times, then paused to look at Beisitian for a moment, before turning and disappearing into the North Slope.
