I Became a Medical Genius in the 80s

Chapter 37: Chapter 37: An Identical Shoulder Bag

Zhou Jiren looks like a meticulous person, not only in his attire but also in his daily life, where everything seems in perfect order. The quilt is folded squarely and very neatly.

As Beisitian was observing the room, Zhou Jiren was observing her, or more accurately, he was looking at the bag hanging on her shoulder.

Beisitian didn’t notice when Zhou Jiren’s pupils contracted slightly upon seeing her military green satchel.

”Miss Bei, does your family have someone in the military?” Zhou Jiren suddenly asked with a smile.

Following his gaze towards the satchel on her, Beisitian smiled and said, ”Why can’t I use this satchel if I don’t have someone in the military?”

She wasn’t familiar with this person, so how could she let someone inquire into her family matters?

”Of course not, it’s just that this type of bag is generally used more by military personnel, so I asked. Would you like some tea?”

”No, thank you,” Beisitian replied.

She understood tea culture, but given the original owner’s identity of growing up in Kao Village, how could she know about drinking tea?

Seeing her lack of interest in tea, Zhou Jiren poured her a glass of clear water without further words.

Looking at the celadon teacup in front of her, Beisitian thought that this person was truly particular. It was said that ordinary city and village folks generally used large mugs, and villagers directly scooped water from water jars to drink.

Why don’t they boil the water? Wouldn’t that be a waste of firewood!

”Miss Bei, do you understand medicine?” Zhou Jiren asked.

Beisitian nodded, ”My father is a traditional Chinese doctor. He may not be able to treat serious illnesses, but minor ones are generally no problem.”

Zhou Jiren smiled and said, ”Miss, you are truly talented!”

”You’re too kind,” Beisitian replied with a gentle smile, her tone calm.

Seeing her remain unperturbed by praise or criticism, Zhou Jiren couldn’t help but regard her more highly. Looking at her attire, it seemed clear she was from the village, yet those star-like eyes and her demeanor revealed a different kind of temperament, starkly contrasting her appearance.

This girl is truly interesting!

Beisitian had a brief conversation with Zhou Jiren and discovered that this person knew a lot about various subjects, which piqued her interest. She naturally wanted to understand this world better, but due to her current circumstances, she had to rely on hearsay.

But merely listening to others doesn’t allow one to truly grasp the essence!

”Miss, if you’re buying things, this satchel might not hold much,” Zhou Jiren pointed at the military green satchel, smiled, and said, ”Actually, seeing this satchel feels familiar because my family has one just like it.”

”Were you in the military before?” Beisitian asked.

”Someone in my family was in the military,” Zhou Jiren replied.

Beisitian nodded, noticing it was getting late, and planned to take her leave as she still needed to shop and head home.

”Would you like me to find someone to guide you? I know a place with very good steamed buns, and they also have stuffed pastries and sesame cakes,” Zhou Jiren suggested.

”No need, just give me the address,” Beisitian said, standing up.

”Alright, if you need anything in the future, feel free to find me. I’ll be staying in Qingzhou Town for a while,” Zhou Jiren said, also standing up.

”Okay,” Beisitian replied smoothly, heading towards the exit.

Zhou Jiren escorted her to the door. In the courtyard, he looked at the satchel and asked, ”Miss Bei, may I ask where you’re from?”

Beisitian stopped, turned to look at him, and said lightly, ”Kao Village.”

Zhou Jiren’s smile remained unchanged as he nodded and said, ”I know the place, it’s not far. See you next time.”

Beisitian looked at him for a moment, finding nothing amiss, suppressed the strange feeling inside, and turned to leave.

It should be a misconception; she heard he wasn’t from Qingzhou Province.

Just as she turned around, Zhou Jiren’s right fist clenched tightly, though his expression remained unchanged, only a flicker of complex emotions flashed in his eyes.

After leaving Jishi Pharmacy, Beisitian went to the place Zhou Jiren mentioned. That place indeed had more people, bustling through the streets, with fixed stalls selling a variety of things, not just limited to white flour steamed buns.

Beisitian bought four biscuits, four stuffed pastries, and about a dozen white flour steamed buns, with the biscuits and pastries placed in the satchel and the rest in a bundle.

She still chose to enter the village during nap time when everyone was asleep.

Returning home, Mrs. Qin and the others were napping. Beisitian hid the steamed buns and pastries before climbing onto the kang to nap.

She couldn’t be blamed for being this cautious. Ever since Qin Hongmei’s failed attempt, she would often come around, suspecting Beisitian had bought more than just two big white buns!

When she came snooping, she would occasionally poke around, but Mrs. Qin wasn’t an easy target. Even if she pretended to be unintentional, Mrs. Qin would give her a talking-to, leaving Qin Hongmei to go back in a huff after several attempts.

Beisitian chuckled to herself, thankfully her mother-in-law wasn’t a pushover.

Now that she ’became’ an embroidery woman at Bao Niang Embroidery Workshop, Beisitian took out twenty yuan this time, allowing her to use this as an excuse in the future to bring out money monthly without arousing suspicion.

Mrs. Qin always felt sentimental when receiving money, and Luo Anguo would too, convinced that surviving a near-death experience brought good fortune. Since that incident where Beisitian narrowly escaped the gates of hell, she not only changed but also seemed to have luck on her side!

The most important thing is, Beisitian has skills of her own. If she hadn’t been suppressed by her stepmother before, she wouldn’t have gone through this much hardship!

Such a good child would have been wasted if she hadn’t escaped that stepmother early!

That day, Beisitian went to herd sheep as usual, without bringing Luo Anping along since he hadn’t finished his writing assignment from yesterday and was punished to stay home and write.

Beisitian saw Liu Chunyu and Liu Chuncai coming out to gather firewood and pick wild vegetables, and she smiled and waved at her.

Though Liu Chunyu’s father is a craftsman, her brother just got married and there’s a young boy in the family who will need a wife, so the family lives frugally without spending too much, and Liu Chunyu has always been diligent, gathering firewood and picking wild vegetables whenever she could help the family.

”Here, this hair clip is for you. I bought it from town.” Beisitian took out a butterfly hair clip, which had become very popular in Qingzhou Town recently, reportedly trendy in the city, and girls adorned with a butterfly clip on their heads were said to look beautiful!

The clip was completely golden, with a gold butterfly perched at the top, its body and antennae clearly defined, with multicolored small beads sewn on its wings, making it rather pretty, though not valuable.

Beisitian had used gold, silver, and jade in the past and naturally wasn’t impressed by this, but since it was so trendy in Qingzhou Town and Liu Chunyu had unintentionally helped her with a big favor last time, she thought of buying one to repay her.

Seeing the butterfly clip, Liu Chunyu’s eyes widened with delight; it was truly beautiful!

She had seen this on her cousin’s head from town that day, with golden wings adorned with beautiful little beads that flutter with movement, looking as if it were flying, simply stunning!

She remembered clearly when her cousin mentioned that such a clip costs one or two yuan, unaffordable for the average girl, and the disdain in her cousin’s eyes when she said it.

A few days ago, she saw Zhang Lianqiao wearing the butterfly clip, strutting with confidence as if she owned the village!

So Liu Chunyu couldn’t believe what she had just heard. What did Beisitian say? Was that butterfly clip for her?

”You, you’re giving it to me?”

Liu Chunyu’s disbelief amused Beisitian. It’s just a clip, is it really that unbelievable?
