I Became a Medical Genius in the 80s

Chapter 42: Chapter 42: Roar

Beisitian hesitated for a moment, wondering whether to sell this Polygonum multiflorum or keep it.

This Polygonum multiflorum was worth a lot of money, and the Luo Family could become wealthy overnight, allowing her to leave early.

Keeping it, she could use it to quickly nurture her own health and that of the Luo Family.

After a brief hesitation, Beisitian made a decision: money was just a material possession to her; at nineteen, her body was the most important thing!

She decided to keep the Polygonum multiflorum!

With this Polygonum multiflorum, she could use the Xuan Talisman to quickly adjust her body to its best state. With ample blood and energy, she’d have spirit, and with it, she could create a Strength Talisman to enhance her muscular strength.

As a woman, having some strength would make her feel more secure.

Beisitian didn’t value money much, but she knew she couldn’t do without it. Even if her business skills weren’t great, she had many talents to earn plenty of money.

Beisitian carefully placed the Polygonum multiflorum in her basket, feeling very cheerful, with a considerably bigger smile along the way.

Howl~~

Suddenly, a loud roar echoed through the valley, and Beisitian abruptly stopped, her smile disappearing, eyes slightly narrowed.

It was a bear’s roar!

She had finally encountered a bear; Beisitian turned around and ran backward. Hearing the roar but not seeing the bear yet, she still had a chance to escape!

Beisitian dared not run recklessly; she could only run back along the path she came, unable to determine the direction of the roar accurately due to the valley’s echoes, making the return path relatively safer.

Beisitian increased her speed; it was at this moment that the importance of her physical condition was apparent. If it were her body from the past life, she could have run out of the valley in no time without gasping, but now, she had trouble breathing shortly after starting to run.

Walking was fine, but running was very exhausting.

After running about a mile, Beisitian couldn’t hold up any longer; her hands on her waist, gasping for air, her clothes soaked with sweat.

Scanning the surroundings, she didn’t see any trace of the bear, but instinctively, Beisitian felt the danger was near.

She was about to move forward when her eyes suddenly tightened, and she retracted her already extended step. In the mud by the edge of the ravine, there were clearly bear paw prints!

Seeing the bear paw prints made Beisitian break out in a cold sweat; the bear had actually come from her path!

She stood completely still, her breathing suppressed significantly; although there were bear paw prints, she hadn’t seen the bear.

Beisitian knew she couldn’t run aimlessly now; if she truly faced the bear, she could never outrun it.

Playing dead might be a strategy, but if the bear was extremely hungry, it might still eat her, driven by the scent of meat!

Recalling her earlier path, Beisitian remembered some small holes under the cliff on this side. Some were as high as half a person, not very deep, but a bear certainly couldn’t fit inside.

They could be used as a temporary hiding place, which seemed like a good choice.

She walked toward the nearby cliff, searching for the cave she had noticed earlier, which probably served as dens for small animals.

Beisitian found the cave about half a person’s height that she had seen earlier. From afar, she had only glanced at it because she knew there couldn’t be any herbs there, so she hadn’t wasted time checking it out.

Seeing the cave’s size, a bear couldn’t get in; Beisitian picked up a stick, regretting not having brought a sickle.

Just as Beisitian reached the cave entrance and reached out to part some branches nearby, she furrowed her brow; there was a bloody smell!

She quietly stepped back and peered inside using the daylight, seeing something lying on the ground, but she couldn’t make out what it was as it lay in the shadows.

The creature was injured; she didn’t know if it could move. Beisitian had no curiosity; she stepped back, intending to leave quickly, knowing the smell of blood would surely attract the bear!

However, just as she turned around, she saw a heavy figure pacing near the opposite cliff!

It was the bear!

Beisitian couldn’t help but smile wryly, realizing that finding the five-hundred-year-old Polygonum multiflorum had depleted her luck, bringing her face-to-face with the bear. As if that weren’t enough, even the only hiding place had something unknown inside.

Judging by the size, she felt it was a wolf!

But there shouldn’t be wolves in these mountains, should there? Beisitian comforted herself.

Now she had two choices: one was to risk leaving; bears had poor eyesight—otherwise, they wouldn’t be called blind bears—she might still have a slim chance.

The other choice was to hide in this cave. The thing inside seemed seriously wounded; otherwise, she hadn’t intentionally lowered her voice earlier, and a creature’s instincts would have noticed her long before. It didn’t attack or hide, so it likely couldn’t move!

Weighing these two options in her mind, Beisitian made a decision, holding the talisman powder in her hand as she turned and entered the cave.

Sure enough, the thing inside heard the noise, only moving its legs twice. It seemed fatally wounded, which put Beisitian at ease.

Without bothering to inspect the creature, Beisitian quickly sprinkled medicine powder at the cave entrance to mask the bloody scent, ensuring the bear wouldn’t find this place unless it stuck its nose inside.

In other words, even if it discovered this place, that bear’s body wouldn’t allow it to get in!

After doing all this, Beisitian turned to look at the creature. What she saw shocked her; it was indeed a wolf!

No one heard of wolves in these parts, and wolves typically appeared in packs. So why was there only one here?

Beisitian was uneasy; where were the other wolves? Bears couldn’t enter this cave, but wolves certainly could!

This wolf had bite marks on its leg and back. It seemed to be the work of the bear, Beisitian thought, smiling wryly. These two were enemies. Once the bear found this cave, it might stubbornly stay put and refuse to leave!

Beisitian shook her head and suddenly let out a surprised sound, crouching down to examine the wolf, realizing its belly was swollen, suggesting it was pregnant and seemingly close to giving birth.

”Pregnant and still fighting a bear? That’s a death wish!” Beisitian murmured quietly.

The wolf’s hind leg suddenly twitched, as if it heard Beisitian speak.

Beisitian shelved her concerns about the wolf and went to the cave entrance, gently parting the branches to peek outside, seeing the bear crossing the ravine and heading in this direction.

Her heart tightened; the bear was surely looking for this wolf.

She truly was unlucky!

Watching the bear come closer, Beisitian felt like several iron barrels were dangling inside her chest, filled with anxiety.

Although the bear had poor eyesight, its sense of smell was sharp. The wolf inside the cave had lost a lot of blood, and the scent was strong; even with the medicine powder, it probably couldn’t completely mask it.

Beisitian’s worries became true as the bear almost immediately headed toward the cave.
