The Daily Life Of A Cyberpunk Magician

Chapter 517 - 277: The Surprise of the Tablet Spirits_2
As for who it was, there was no need to say more; Li Yuntang was sure to do what he had promised.

”Right, indeed, let’s wait a bit more; we’ll head back to the Seventh District to devise a long-term plan,” Wolf said, then turned his head to look out the window.

The mission had failed; they hadn’t caught Gary, but instead had triggered a huge mess at the Thirteen District Police Station.

Moreover, this mess couldn’t be resolved in a short time; cases like this were often fraught with power struggles and faction wars. The Thirteen District Police Station, caught in the middle, had no idea what the outcome would be.

”It’s okay, let the bullet fly a little longer,” Jiang Shu shrugged. To him, this wasn’t much of a problem.

For himself, although this mission had brought no merit, he surely bore no fault. The turn of events being as unexpected as they were, nobody could have foreseen.

”Indeed, you’re right; let the bullet fly a little longer,” Wolf liked this saying, and then he laughed softly, staying silent thereafter.

However, Jiang Shu wasn’t about to let Wolf off so easily. After some deep thought, he sent a message on his wristwatch.

Jiang Shu: I want to know your opinion on Gary.

Wolf caught sight of the message, and his expression froze for a moment, seemingly puzzled by Jiang Shu’s reasoning.

Wolf: What do you mean? My opinion on Gary?

Wolf: I think... he’s a good person.

Jiang Shu: ...

Jiang Shu: I’m asking you, do you really think we should catch Gary?

Wolf: Is there another way? Gary has contracted Cyber Syndrome; he will only become more dangerous. Taking him to the hospital for treatment is the best thing for him.

Jiang Shu: After he took me away yesterday, he showed me something—there’s a bomb hidden in his Prosthetic Body. If he loses his self-awareness due to Cyber Syndrome, the bomb will explode and kill him on the spot.

”Hmm?” Wolf made a puzzled noise, lifted his head, and glanced at Jiang Shu, as if to seek confirmation, and Jiang Shu nodded back at him, indicating that he was telling the truth.

Wolf: Is that so? But if Gary continues to play the part of a vigilante, continues with his Rifts, and keeps killing, his condition will only get worse. The hospital is the best place for him.

Jiang Shu shook his head and continued to send messages.

Jiang Shu: Cyber Syndrome is incurable; to this day, no hospital has succeeded in fully treating Cyber Syndrome.

Ryan’s treatment method is entirely unsuccessful. He merely uses hypnosis to erase the self-awareness of those with Cyber Syndrome, creating an illusion of being cured.

This is utterly useless, just like those lobotomies performed to treat schizophrenia in the past—absolutely inhumane.

Wolf: But medication can alleviate his symptoms.

Jiang Shu: Do you really think that’s what he wants? To go against his will and forcibly send him to the hospital for treatment isn’t doing him any favors.

Jiang Shu: Rather than using that excuse, it’d be more honest to say he’s being sent there because he’s broken the law, circumventing the judicial process like this, it’s definitely wrong in terms of procedure.

Wolf: So, what are you aiming at with all this?

Jiang Shu: I saw it, back in the Seges Building. Were you thinking of startling the snake so Gary could escape?

Wolf lowered his head, and for some reason, he stiffened upon reading this.

After a while, he sighed and continued to message: Maybe, I don’t know why I did that at the time. Like you, I somehow felt that’s how to truly help Gary.

”I understand,” Jiang Shu suddenly terminated the topic, laid back leisurely with his hands on his legs, and closed his eyes, resting peacefully.

Wolf: ”???”

So you get me all worked up with your thoughts, and now you’re going to sleep without saying anything?

”What do you mean?” Wolf was almost in a fit.

”It’s nothing; let’s talk about it back at the police station,” Jiang Shu replied, still with his eyes closed, unwilling to reveal anything.

——

It was deep into the night.

The Seventh District Police Station’s laboratory.

Kirie swallowed nervously.

She couldn’t understand why Jiang Shu was in her laboratory.

Why, after all this time of not seeing him, just when she was nearly free from the Wizard’s shadow, did he suddenly appear tonight?

Could it really be because she had mentioned his name during the day he had discovered her?

This wizard...

was utterly terrifying.

”Suddenly thought of it, Jiang Shu hasn’t been to the police station for a while, so I invited him to come over and have a look,” Wolf said cheerily as he started the conversation.

”!” Kirie instantly glared at him, her eyes wide with fury, leaving Wolf confused.

”Indeed, I haven’t been to the station for some time,” Jiang Shu reflected with a discernible sigh.

So much had happened during this time; although it hadn’t been long, he felt as if it had been ages.

”Now it’s really late, and I think I need to go home and sleep,” Kirie said quickly, thinking of a way to extricate herself from the situation and declaring it with confidence.

”Ah?” Wolf, hearing this, was taken aback. ”Don’t you usually research at night and then sleep in the lab?”

”!” Kirie shot Wolf another glare. She was certain he was doing this on purpose.

But in front of Jiang Shu, she had to maintain appearances, so Kirie nodded and, following up on Wolf’s words, said, ”That is usually the case, but I have very important things to do tomorrow, so I need to go home to get some good rest tonight.”

”Oh, I see,” Wolf expressed his understanding, then casually added, ”Since that’s the case, why don’t Jiang Shu take you home? It’s on his way. As for me... never mind, it’s not on my way.”

”...”

If Kirie had ever thought Wolf was not doing this intentionally, now she felt like strangling him.

She pressed down hard on the horns on Wolf’s head.

”Ow—” Wolf suddenly held his head and yelped, looking at Kirie with confusion, ”Do you really object that much?”

”No, it’s not that I object.” Kirie stole a glance at Jiang Shu, worried it would provoke his deep thoughts, then sighed, ”Since it’s like this, let’s go then.”

”Alright, let’s go,” Jiang Shu nodded. It was late at night, and it was perfectly normal to walk a girl home.

The three of them left the lab. Wolf, of course, split early, leaving only Jiang Shu and Kirie.

Walking through the streets at night, they found themselves in the Central Business District, almost entirely made up of office buildings, which made it exceptionally quiet at this hour.

At this time of night, most taxis had returned for charging, and to use these autonomous vehicles, one would have to go to the taxi depot themselves.

In such a quiet environment, with no conversation, the atmosphere became just slightly awkward.

But Kirie was rather enjoying this silence; it didn’t feel like anything was going to happen.

”So, what exactly are you afraid of?” Yet, breaking this silence was Jiang Shu. He couldn’t hold back his curiosity any longer and had to ask.

For him, all he needed to do was ask, whether or not the answer would be truthful, he’d still grasp the truth.

”I... I’m not afraid of anything,” Kirie shook her head, her expression unchanged.

However, Jiang Shu, who knew her inner thoughts, was both surprised and amused.

She was clearly terrified to death, yet she was putting on such a brave front.

And...

A wizard, he really had to admire her wild imagination.

”I’m not any kind of wizard, nor am I the master of the Dark Underground Empire,” Jiang Shu spoke, not intending to explain everything to Kirie but wanting to dispel her bizarre ideas, ”My situation is a bit special. But one thing’s for sure, I won’t hurt you, and there’s no need for me to.”

”You...” Kirie’s face immediately showed a look of shock.

How do you know what I was thinking!

Jiang Shu: ”...”

”Anyway, you don’t need to be afraid of me.” Jiang Shu didn’t bother explaining any further, ”In the future, I will consult you on scientific principles, but that’s all.”

As he said this, his gaze suddenly became drawn to an alley by the street, and he quickly bid Kirie farewell, ”Sorry, I have something to deal with, you go on ahead.”

”Ah?” Kirie, watching his rapidly receding figure, was stunned.

But Jiang Shu was no longer concerned about such matters.

The figure that had just been standing at the entrance of the alley...

That was Sister Ru!

The surprise the Tablet Spirits spoke of was Sister Ru?!
