Chen Jie directly called out the name of this lady.

Indeed, this was none other than Jin Yanzi, one of the Four Dragons and Eight Tigers of the Huangzhou Prefecture, the Chunxiang Pavilion Master, a renowned expert of the Wolf Smoke Realm.

Jin Yanzi waved her hand and said, ”Just a bit of a Jianghu reputation, what Eight Tigers, you’re flattering me, too flattering.”

Wulu Tai, hearing this, curled his lips, and Chen Jie observed, ”Lord Assistant Magistrate seems to have a different opinion.”

Wulu Tai glanced at the lady and then laughed, ”What Yan Hu, I think it’s a tigress...”

”What did you say?”

Jin Yanzi gave Wulu Tai a side glance, and Wulu Tai said, ”Haha, just joking, just joking, my wife is the most virtuous.”

Jin Yanzi said, ”Stop with the slick talk, the Commandery Princess has been here for a while, why not invite her in.”

Hearing this, Wulu Tai said, ”Yes, yes, Commandery Princess, please, Hundred Households Chen.”

Chen Jie followed the Commandery Princess into the government office, and then they took their seats as host and guest.

Wulu Tai looked at the Commandery Princess and said, ”Commandery Princess, are you here to look at the case files?”

The Commandery Princess answered, ”Yes, indeed.”

Wulu Tai said, ”Then let’s first look at the case files, let me lead the Commandery Princess to the case file library for a review.”

Zhao Ya responded, ”Much appreciated.”

With those words, Wulu Tai, together with his wife, led Zhao Ya and Chen Jie and their party towards the case file library.

Upon reaching the case file library, the gatekeeper saw Wulu Tai and said, ”Lord Assistant Magistrate, what are your orders?”

Wulu Tai raised his hand and said, ”Open the case file library, we need to inspect the case files.”

Upon hearing this, the gatekeeper replied, ”Understood.”

Soon, the case file library was opened, and the group entered. Just then they saw an old man sitting at the entrance, with his arms crossed, dozing off.

Wulu Tai said, ”This is the old guard of the case file library. Don’t be fooled by his age; he has every case in this library memorized.”

As he spoke, Wulu Tai approached the old guard and said, ”Old Sun, Old Sun...”

”Hmm? Hmm?”

Old Sun awoke in surprise, looked up, and saw Wulu Tai, ”Ah, Lord Assistant Magistrate, what brings you here.”

Wulu Tai replied, ”Old Sun, this is the new Jianghu Chief, here to access the case files.”

”Jianghu Chief?”

Old Sun looked puzzled and said, ”This is the court’s case file library; why would the Jianghu Chief need to see these?”

”Old Sun, you’re getting senile. Remember what not to meddle in?”

Old Sun said, ”Yes, yes, old age makes me meddlesome. Greetings, Lord Jianghu Chief. By the way, what case files are you here to access?”

Chen Jie spoke up, ”All the files related to the Mei Hua Killer case.”

Old Sun, upon hearing this, said, ”Mei Hua Killer? That’s a cold case, a tough one to crack.”

Chen Jie smiled and said, ”Elder Sun, you’re right. However, the harder the case is to solve, the more satisfying it is to crack it, right?”

Upon hearing this, Old Sun said, ”Haha, I didn’t expect to meet someone like you. Very well, follow me then.”

With that, Old Sun led the group to the case file library. The State Mansion’s case file library was large, with cases from the past thirty years of the prefecture.

Old Sun led the group, picking up a bamboo ladder along the way. Soon he arrived at a large shelf, set up the ladder, and climbed up to find a dust-covered wooden box at the top.

At this moment, Ah San perplexedly asked, ”Why is it placed so high up?”

Upon hearing this, Chen Jie explained, ”Generally, in the government office, the harder the case, the higher it’s placed. Some deemed unsolvable cold cases are placed at the very top, referred to as ’shelving at a high cabinet’.”

Hearing this, Ah San remarked, ”So there’s such a saying, interesting.”

Old Sun then took down the case file and said, ”These are the seven Mei Hua Killer case files from the past three years in our Huangzhou Prefecture. By the way, I’ve heard that there was another incident today at the Darugachi Mansion, which hasn’t been organized or archived yet.”

Chen Jie received the case box handed over by Old Sun, noticing a thick layer of dust accumulating on top.

He expressed his gratitude, ”Thank you for your hard work, Elder Sun.”

Old Sun replied, ”Haha, it’s nothing. Young man, read it carefully. After you’re done, assist in bringing it back up; I’m not as nimble as before.”

Chen Jie replied, ”Understood, thank you, Elder Sun.”

Chen Jie then blew the dust off the box and began looking through the case files inside.

A total of seven volumes, the Mei Hua Killer had murdered exactly seven imperial officials.

Chen Jie started searching.

[Salt Seeking Order Zhao Xi]

Chen Jie started examining the case files. The first case file was from a recent death, exactly one month ago.

Salt Seeking Order Zhao Xi was responsible for supervising and managing the salt affairs in Huangzhou Prefecture.

He died in his own home, after being struck heavily on the back of the head.

[Recording Grain Assistant Qian Shunsan]

This one died relatively earlier; it was a case from three months ago.

The Recording Grain Assistant was a Secondary Sixth Rank officer under the Magistrate of Huangzhou Prefecture, responsible for managing the allocation of grains within the city and keeping records of the official granary.

He was found dead in the room of a courtesan at the Rouge Building, discovered naked, with a long, thin ice pick inserted into his chest.

His death was gruesome.

[Huangzhou Prison Chief, Zhou Desen]

...

As Chen Jie rummaged through the files, he realized that all the murder victims were officials from Huangzhou Prefecture, ranging from Secondary Sixth Rank to Eighth Rank, and they all held substantial power.

This Zoroastrian Sect certainly knew how to pick their targets.

Chen Jie browsed quickly and then looked up at Wulu Tai, ”Lord Assistant Magistrate, you’ve investigated these cases for quite a while, do you have any suspects?”

Upon hearing this, Wulu Tai was about to speak when Jin Yanzi interjected, ”Husband, don’t speak recklessly.”

Wulu Tai sighed, ”Alas, no.”

Seeing this, Chen Jie signaled Zhao Ya with his eyes, and Zhao Ya said, ”That’s not right, Lord Assistant Magistrate. It seems like you have something to say. Now that I’m here, don’t hold back any longer. Is there a suspect?”

Wulu Tai hesitated upon hearing this, and Jin Yanzi said, ”Husband, don’t speak without evidence.”

Wulu Tai said, ”Wife, if it were someone else asking, I wouldn’t say. But since the Commandery Princess is asking, I can’t not answer. I believe the Mei Hua Killer is Magistrate Chu Tian!”

Hmm?!!
