Chapter 517: Chapter 169 Chen Jiusi: Who Says the Mulan People Can’t Kill? (Please Subscribe)_4

Chen Jie said, ”A Mulan person has died; the matter won’t just end like this. But it’s also not a big deal. Right now, I’m very useful to Darugachi; at most, he will raise me high only to put me down gently.”

”You just remember, don’t act impulsively in any situation. If the arrest officers from the government office come to catch you, don’t resist. Everything else, your brother has got it covered.”

Chen Jie gazed at Chen Xiaohu, and Xiaohu said, ”Mhm, I understand.”

Chen Jie nodded and said, ”Let’s go have something to eat. We’ve been busy all night and haven’t had a hot meal yet.”

After saying this,

the two went to eat. Chen Jie approved of Xiaohu’s actions, and as for the trouble it had caused himself, Chen Jie wasn’t too concerned. Indeed, he had been going too far recently. Many things, Darugachi probably had some opinions as well, and this time, he guessed Darugachi would take the opportunity to give himself a rap on the knuckles.

It just so happened that this incident provided Darugachi with an opportunity to reprimand him. When the time came, he would just admit his mistake and show that he would comply with Darugachi’s arrangement, and then everything would be fine.

Moreover, it wasn’t Xiaohu who killed the Mulan person this time, which made it even less of an issue.

Therefore, he wasn’t too worried.

Chen Jie and Xiaohu had a sumptuous dinner together, chatted about some affairs within the hall, and mentioned Uncle Erba. Uncle Erba’s health was getting better and better. Originally, he wasn’t very old, not even forty years old. The reason he seemed old was due to the burdens of life.

Now, he didn’t have any financial pressure. Xiao Hu’s monthly salary at White Tiger Hall amounted to a high one hundred taels, a sum sufficient to buy a small house in the city.

There were also some additional under-the-table incomes that Chen Jie deliberately left for him, but Xiaohu, whether he was confused or what, didn’t take a cent and handed all the money over to Chen Jie, even asking him to fill in some procurement loopholes.

Did Chen Jie not know about these kinds of loopholes?

He knew, but he had left them unaddressed purposefully, to leave a loophole for those below to skim a bit.

It was a pity that Xiaohu was somewhat slow, but therefore, Chen Jie often rewarded Xiaohu.

He even prepared a cushy job for Uncle Erba and his family, but Uncle Erba found it hard to leave his native place and was unwilling to leave Xiantao Village. Chen Jie had no choice but to let it be.

Chen Jie was grateful to Uncle Erba’s family. If not for their care back then, his life with Yunjin would have been much harder. Chen Jie was a person who remembered kindness and sought to repay it; whoever had helped him, he kept it in his heart.

After the dinner and drinks, the two returned to their quarters, and the night passed without incident.

The next day, as Chen Jie had just woken up and was being attended to by Cuiju in washing his face, Si Xi ran in, a look of urgency on his face, ”Hall Master, Hall Master, something bad has happened, something very bad!”

Chen Jie washed his face, handed the towel to Cuiju, and looked at Si Xi, ”What’s so bad?”

Si Xi said, ”Master Hu, Master Hu has been taken away by the government office.”

”Oh?”

Chen Jie raised an eyebrow, surprised that the government office acted so quickly, and then said to Si Xi, ”Oh, who came for him?”

Si Xi replied, ”Arrest officer Wu Hong.”

Chen Jie nodded upon hearing this and said, ”Oh, I see. By the way, Xiao Hu didn’t resist, did he?”

”No, Master Hu didn’t resist.”

Chen Jie nodded, then immediately said, ”Si Xi, prepare some fine gifts and get the horses ready; I’m going to pay a visit to Darugachi Mansion.”

Upon hearing this, Si Xi said, ”Lord, it was the government office that took Master Hu, are we going to Darugachi Mansion?”

Chen Jie laughed and said, ”Ha ha, without Darugachi’s nod, the government office wouldn’t dare to touch a person from White Tiger Hall. Rest assured, it’s fine.”

As he spoke, he turned to Cuiju and said, ”Tell the Lady that I will not be having breakfast at the mansion today.”

After hearing this, Si Xi said, ”Then, then I will go prepare.”

Chen Jie said, ”Hmm.”

Si Xi turned and left, puzzled; his own Hall Master didn’t seem to be in any hurry. Master Hu is his best brother after all.

Si Xi left with his questions.

Meanwhile, on the road, Xiao Hu’s hands were shackled, accompanied by Wu Hong, who whispered, ”When we get to the court, no matter what, don’t speak insolently; I will help you.”

Xiao Hu looked at Wu Hong and replied, ”Brother Hong, I apologize for yesterday’s events. Brother Jiu Si scolded me yesterday; it was my fault.”

Wu Hong was taken aback, then patted Xiao Hu on the shoulder and said, ”We don’t talk about these things among brothers.”

Xiao Hu said, ”Mhm, I’ll listen to Brother Hong.”

Wu Hong nodded, escorting Xiao Hu towards the court.

Before long, they arrived at the court, where it was crowded and bustling with people, men and women, many wearing grey clothes, typically worn only by the house slaves of the Mulan family.

Most of the people were standing around in the public hall, with only two people kneeling on the ground.

These two, trembling on the floor, turned out to be the couple from the yesterday’s wine shop who had been bullied.

Wu Hong walked in with Xiao Hu, and as they entered the main hall, the group in grey fixed a harsh stare at Xiao Hu; he didn’t mind, gave them a glance, and stood to the side. Then Wu Hong stepped forward and saluted, ”Lord, the accused Chen Xiaohu has been brought here.”

Sitting behind the table on the platform of the grand hall was the County Magistrate, Tang Wannian himself. Hearing the officer, he banged the gavel and declared, ”Good, all the accused have arrived. Madam, are we ready to begin the court session?”

Tang Wannian looked toward a woman surrounded by grey-clothed guards.

Chen Xiaohu noticed this woman as well—dressed in extravagant finery, with an air of vulgarity, her fingers laden with several large gold rings, a fine emerald on her thumb.
