Naruto: Starting by Reading Minds in Naruto

The candidates stopped dismissing the retrieval team after the valley struck the first one unconscious.

A stone no larger than a fist crossed three currents before hitting the side of a protective vest. The seal hardened around the impact and prevented penetration, but the child spun, lost his rhythm, and vanished into dust. His radio transmitted an impact pulse followed by silence.

”Seven o’clock, low,” Atsushi said.

Shikyō drove a kunai into the platform. Wire hissed from its ring while his insects tightened a line already anchored within a sheltered crack. Tsuyoshi caught the wire with both hands; Gaku braced behind him. Tonbo changed the child’s perception of up and down just enough to make him curl around the pull instead of struggling against it. They recovered him in eleven seconds.

Ki examined his pupils, neck, pulse, and chakra. ”Concussion. He remains out until tomorrow at minimum.”

”I can continue,” the boy protested after regaining awareness.

”You asked where you were three times,” Ki replied. ”Determination does not repair judgment.”

Another candidate exhausted herself holding an anchor against a current that had already shifted. A third descended beyond the next marker because success made him careless. Each returned bruised and angry. Ki treated embarrassment as neither injury nor qualification.

”You recover, review the failure, and return only if cleared,” he said. ”The trial measures adaptation. Repeating the same mistake faster proves nothing.”

Tsuyoshi watched the candidates with less contempt than before. Their chakra reserves rivaled those of trained chūnin, yet their attention collapsed under pain, confusion, and pressure. Clan methods had prepared their bodies for wind. Only exposure could teach them what fear did to a sequence they had performed perfectly in a courtyard.

”They are children with expensive armor,” he said.

”They are candidates with safeguards paid for by the people responsible for them,” Tonbo replied. ”Do not turn preparation into an insult.”

”I meant experience matters.”

”Then say that.”

The distinction stayed with him.

Tsuyoshi joined the next injury review instead of mocking from the platform. He asked the candidate what the stone had sounded like before impact and demonstrated how Gaku reacted when moving debris disturbed scent already trapped behind a shelter. The lesson did not grant an Inuzuka nose. It taught the child to treat sudden silence, grit, and pressure change as related warnings. Ki recorded the adjustment for the next trial group.

By midday, all twelve had entered at least once. Eight remained below in rotating groups. Two rested with minor injuries. One slept beneath medical observation. The last sat beside Ki and described every decision that preceded a broken anchor.

Tonbo’s Shadow Clone worked among the instruments without interfering with the command structure. A spherical vane rotated on its frame, mapping changes too fast for ordinary gauges. Woven carriers protected temperature and pressure seals beyond the barrier. When one carrier lost a wing, the clone recorded the exact current rather than preserving it at unnecessary cost.

Shikyō observed for several minutes. ”The equipment is not part of candidate protection.”

”No. It is permitted secondary work.”

”You spent more on it than this mission pays.”

”Considerably more.”

Tsuyoshi joined them. ”How much?”

”Thirty-five million ryō for the principal array, before transport and replacement sensors.”

Tsuyoshi inhaled hard enough for Gaku to inspect him. ”That is more than a person earns in years.”

”Which is why I expect evidence before deciding it was worthwhile.”

The instrument had been manufactured in the Land of Lightning for mountain forecasting. Its export controls restricted military sensors but not civilian weather equipment. Tonbo had purchased it through declared channels, paid transport duties, and modified only the protective frame. Its creators had built a tool to warn settlements. His planned technique did not change what the measurements meant. It changed what someone might do with them.

Tonbo treated that change as a responsibility rather than proof of cleverness. A natural system could supply force beyond a shinobi’s reserves, but only under compatible conditions. The current model required preparation, environmental data, multiple anchor points, and chakra comparable to several jōnin working together. It could not be thrown into an ordinary duel.

”Then who supplies the chakra?” Atsushi asked without looking away from the valley.

”Stored arrays, linked volunteers, or a source large enough to survive the burden. No involuntary extraction.”

Tonbo remembered future battlefields and jinchūriki with reserves beyond ordinary scale. He did not write names. Planning to ask someone for power was not the same as possessing their consent.

”A strategic technique,” Shikyō concluded.

”If it works.”

The clone sent another carrier into the wind. Its route followed a pressure shadow behind a stone pillar, rose within warmer air, and crossed into the central current. For four seconds, three readings aligned. The sphere on the platform turned as Tonbo predicted. He smiled once and returned attention to the candidates.

The measured success did not prove control. A single aligned reading could be accident, instrument error, or an effect of the carrier itself. Tonbo ordered the clone to repeat the route from three elevations and compare the result against an empty launch. Creating a technique from the first agreeable number would be no different from Naruto choosing the most confident witness in the manual.

In Konoha, Naruto’s tactical withdrawal ended two streets from the Aburame district.

”Captain Naruto ran first,” Maki said.

”I moved first because captains lead.”

”Away from the objective,” Tenyu added.

”Shino could not join. Staying would waste mission time.”

The twins accepted none of these explanations. Their monitoring seals carried the emotional disturbance to Ayame, who sent the woven sparrow closer. It found all three healthy, arguing, and free of insects.

Naruto tried three other classmates that afternoon. One closed a door after recognizing him. Another claimed urgent chores while standing in an empty yard. A third repeated something an adult had said about the Nine-Tails and ordered the twins away from him.

Naruto laughed at each refusal until the door closed.

Then the laugh stopped.

Tenyu and Maki felt the change. Their own childhood had taught them that adults sometimes disliked people for reasons children could not alter, but they had never faced an entire street of it. Naruto recovered quickly because he had practiced recovery for years. That did not make the injury imaginary.

”Captain Naruto,” Tenyu said, using the title without mockery, ”we still have a team.”

”And Shino might help tomorrow,” Maki said.

Naruto looked at them. Two children younger than three could not understand the seal he carried or the night his parents died. They understood being left outside.

”Of course we have a team,” he declared. ”I’m recruiting everyone before Kiba gets them.”

They found Chōji near a food stall counting coins for a packet of roasted chestnuts.

Naruto nearly passed him. Chōji was friendly, but Naruto wanted someone who could read the intelligence manual without falling asleep. Then Chōji greeted him normally and offered the twins one chestnut each after checking whether they were allowed to eat it.

”Do you want to join my intelligence squad?” Naruto asked.

Chōji’s face brightened. Other children chose him last for running games and blamed his size when they lost. Shikamaru never did, but one friend did not erase every exclusion.

”You’re already a captain?”

”Future Hokage and current captain. I need a strategist.”

”What does the strategist do?”

Naruto considered the question. ”Helps everyone find an answer.”

Chōji handed him a chestnut. ”Then I’ll try.”

The answer arrived without ridicule, fear, or a negotiation over future office. Naruto accepted the chestnut as if it sealed a treaty.

The squad finally had a strategist.
