Naruto: Starting by Reading Minds in Naruto

Kiba threw all three shuriken.

The first climbed too high. The second crossed beneath it, and the third seemed certain to strike both out of the air. Metal rang against metal. Instead of falling, the deflected blades changed angle and struck the target together, one above the other and the last at the center.

Silence held the class.

Shikamaru stopped pretending to watch the clouds. Chōji lowered the snack he had been trying to conceal behind his sleeve. Shino’s insects shifted beneath his collar in response to the sharp metal sounds. Naruto looked from the three blades to Kiba as though the targets had personally betrayed him.

Iruka examined the marks. The pattern resembled an advanced Uchiha exercise, but Kiba had neither Sharingan nor the visual precision to reproduce it by imitation. He had used timing, collision, and a calculation completed before the first throw.

”Nine points,” Iruka said. ”Explain the method.”

Kiba bared his teeth. ”A shinobi shouldn’t reveal a secret technique.”

”A student should answer his instructor.”

”I measured the wind and the targets, then used the first two throws to guide the last one.”

That was accurate and incomplete. Iruka allowed it. Kiba’s nose had twitched before the throw, and Akamaru had barked once when the breeze changed. The technique belonged to their partnership as much as the boy’s hand.

Iruka also recognized Tonbo’s influence in the order of operations. Kiba had inspected the field while others threw, gathered information without delaying his turn, and chosen a result that displayed control rather than raw force. Teaching a child to perform one impressive trick was possible. Teaching him to construct the trick from fundamentals was harder.

Iruka made a note to visit Tonbo after the current grading cycle. His own classes contained students who understood an explanation, students who memorized it, and students who agreed merely to end the conversation. He needed better methods for telling those groups apart before a practical exercise exposed the difference.

Sasuke approached as soon as the class rotated to another exercise. ”Teach me.”

”No.”

”Why not?”

”Because I created it. You cannot learn every technique just because you ask.”

Sasuke held up five fingers. ”Five barbecue dinners. Enough for you and Akamaru.”

Kiba’s refusal became less certain.

Tonbo rewarded difficult training with grilled meat. Since the Academy term began, Tsume had limited those rewards and insisted that a growing ninken needed balance rather than endless scraps. Akamaru’s ears rose at the offer.

”That is an attempt to bribe a future Hokage,” Kiba said.

”It is payment for instruction.”

Kiba considered the distinction. Guided Insight would have placed it beneath known: Sasuke possessed money. Inferred: he wanted the technique badly. Desired: accepting five dinners would somehow demonstrate leadership.

”Agreed,” Kiba said. ”But you probably cannot use it.”

”Let me decide that.”

Naruto stared at them. ”You can buy techniques with barbecue?”

”Not from me,” Sasuke said.

”I can pay in ramen.”

”You have no money.”

”I will when I’m Hokage.”

Shino stood close enough to hear, though no one had noticed him arrive. ”A promise of future payment from an office you do not hold has little present value.”

Naruto jumped. ”How long have you been there?”

”Since before the negotiation. This continues to happen.”

”Do you want to learn it too?”

”No. My insects provide a different means of tracking trajectory. I was observing the social exchange.”

Naruto decided that answer raised more questions than it solved.

After school they met in a wooded practice area. Kiba drew three circles upon a tree and placed scraps of cloth beneath them. Each cloth carried a different scent: smoke, meat broth, and crushed cedar.

”First, identify the target without looking.”

Sasuke frowned. ”That was not part of the throw.”

”It was the most important part.”

Kiba demonstrated. He closed his eyes, turned twice, and pointed correctly to every circle. Then he marked the shifting wind by watching leaves and feeling the air against his cheek.

”A scent does not sit still,” he said. ”It moves, thins, mixes, and reaches you late. You have to estimate where the source was when the air carried it away. The shuriken works the same way. You calculate the target, weight, angle, wind, and collision.”

Sasuke’s confidence faltered. ”You calculated all of that during class?”

”Most of it before my turn. Tonbo-sensei made me study mechanics and observation.”

”Those subjects belong to later years.”

”The Academy decides when it tests you. It does not decide when you are allowed to learn.”

Sasuke remembered Itachi teaching him shuriken patterns far beyond first-year work. The principle was not unfamiliar. What stung was discovering that Kiba had applied it somewhere Sasuke believed only the Sharingan could reach. He concentrated chakra around his nose as instructed and inhaled.

Earth, sweat, dog, old bark, insects, water, distant cooking smoke, and Kiba’s recent barbecue collided without order. Sasuke coughed and lost every individual scent.

Akamaru barked with amusement.

”Again,” Kiba said. ”Less chakra. You’re making everything louder instead of listening better.”

Sasuke tried until his nose ached. He learned to separate cedar from smoke at arm’s length but could not follow either through the wind. When he attempted the throw, the first collision sent both shuriken into the ground.

Kiba did not laugh. He repositioned Sasuke’s wrist and shortened the distance. Without scent, Sasuke could still use sight to judge a stationary target and calculate one planned collision. The adjustment surrendered the technique’s greatest advantage—the ability to track what lay outside direct vision—but preserved enough of the lesson to make practice worthwhile.

”You said this was a shuriken technique,” he accused.

”It is. For someone with an Inuzuka nose.”

”Then you sold me something I cannot use.”

”I warned you.”

”After accepting the dinners.”

”Before we ate them. You can still learn the calculations.”

Sasuke wanted to call the bargain dishonest. Tenyu and Maki had made him suspicious of every transaction involving Tonbo’s household or students. Yet Kiba had disclosed the method, demonstrated each part, and spent an hour correcting him. The limitation belonged to Sasuke’s senses, not Kiba’s promise.

”You will receive the five dinners,” he said.

Kiba grinned. ”I knew the Uchiha kept their word.”

”Do not make that sound like praise from you matters.”

They practiced the non-scent portions until sunset. Sasuke learned to predict a single deflection from angle and force. Kiba learned that his explanation became less useful whenever he replaced a step with *you just smell it*. Teaching exposed gaps Tonbo had warned him about.

Akamaru learned that sitting beside the target earned him no barbecue and relocated to a safer stone.

At home, Sasuke found Itachi preparing for a mission.

”Brother, will you practice shuriken with me?”

Itachi looked at the irritated skin beneath Sasuke’s nose. ”What happened?”

”A classmate defeated me with a technique he created.”

Sasuke waited for disappointment. Itachi only smiled.

”Then you have found someone who can make you work harder. Winning and losing are temporary. What you learn from either can remain.”

”The only person I intend to chase is you. I will surpass Kiba first.”

Itachi touched two fingers to Sasuke’s forehead. ”Not today. I have a mission. Practice the pattern I showed you last week.”

He vanished before Sasuke could protest.

Sasuke carried the Itachi figure to the clan training ground and placed it upon a stone. A trace of chakra activated the voice seal.

”Little brother, shall we practice shuriken today?”

The imitation was not Itachi. Sasuke knew that. It was still better than an empty field. He raised his first shuriken and imagined Kiba’s three targets.
