Naruto: Starting by Reading Minds in Naruto

Inner Archive activated while Tonbo stood before Murakumo’s grave.

The defense was not due for another four days. Tonbo had added a second condition after learning the Kurama secret: any direct encounter with the name Kurama Yakumo would force an immediate comparison.

Memory shifted into alignment.

Inner Archive did not merely preserve an old recollection. It held a sealed comparison of relationships, dates, chakra impressions, and conclusions Tonbo had deliberately marked as reliable. When the world supplied a new version of those facts, the defense placed both histories before his awareness. It could expose the contradiction. It could not tell him which reality deserved to survive.

Kurenai’s history changed first. She remembered becoming Yakumo’s private tutor, studying the child’s weak body, and sealing Ido when the unstable presence threatened to emerge. Those memories contained detail, emotion, and causal links. Nothing inside them felt inserted.

The older record contradicted them. One month earlier, Murakumo had no child. His wife had been unable to conceive. He had predicted that the technique might make him appear to possess a daughter, and he had entrusted Tonbo with the book precisely because the next cycle approached.

The cemetery supported the new history. The memorial register named Yakumo as next of kin. Condolence envelopes bore messages to her. Even the groundskeeper remembered watching Murakumo bring his daughter to clean an ancestor’s grave the previous spring. Reality had not hidden a child behind a veil; it had revised years of ordinary evidence so thoroughly that disbelief itself appeared irrational.

Tonbo extended his perception across the cemetery. Yakumo remained fully alive. Her chakra circulated, her breath caught when grief tightened her throat, and tears changed the scent of her skin. She was not a projection hiding an empty place. Genjutsu Reincarnation had produced a person and reorganized the evidence surrounding her.

”What is wrong?” Kurenai asked.

Tonbo forced his shoulders to relax. ”Murakumo’s death was unexpected.”

”Shinobi live among unexpected deaths.” She looked toward Yakumo. ”I only wish we could prevent more of them.”

”Give her affection as well as discipline. Family pressure will make Ido stronger if she believes power is the only reason anyone values her.”

Kurenai watched the girl accept incense from an elderly clansman. ”She wants to lead the clan because she thinks it will make them forgive her body for being weak. Every lesson becomes proof that she deserves to exist. I have tried to slow her down, but she hears caution as rejection.”

”Then make the distinction explicit. Her health may limit what you permit. It does not determine whether she belongs.”

Kurenai nodded. To her, the advice came from a colleague concerned for a bereaved student. She did not know that the student had appeared inside her past.

Tonbo left before further observation became obvious. On the street, he reviewed the restored discrepancy without reducing it to a simple intrusion. The technique did not resemble a foreign command that could be expelled from his chakra. It resembled a bridge inserted into a road while every traveler received a memory of crossing it.

He had promised Murakumo to seek a release. That now required protecting Yakumo rather than treating her as a research object. The child and the ancient creator of the technique might share chakra and identity, but the grief at the grave belonged to the person living now.

He added three safeguards to Inner Archive as he walked. A sudden belief that Yakumo had always been his student would trigger a comparison. So would any impulse to harm her for the sake of ending the cycle. The final safeguard was simpler: no conclusion about her identity could be trusted unless it survived a night without genjutsu. A perfect defense was impossible, but disciplined delay could deny the technique an easy victory.

Tonbo could observe her through legitimate contact as Murakumo’s colleague and coordinate with Kurenai. He would not provoke Ido merely to measure the kekkei genkai. If a solution existed, it needed to separate Yakumo from the cycle without erasing her present life.

Kiba waited at Training Ground 98 when Tonbo arrived late.

”Old man,” he said, opening his eyes from meditation, ”you missed the appointed time.”

Akamaru sat beside him with equal stillness. Buried Silence had changed the way both responded to distraction. They noticed Tonbo’s approach and chose not to move until he entered speaking distance.

”A village senior died,” Tonbo said. ”The funeral delayed me.”

Kiba’s irritation faded. ”Oh.”

”You have completed the first phase. Open Sky taught you to act under fear. Deep Water improved coordination. Buried Silence developed attention. Now we begin the work you requested.”

”No matter what it is, Akamaru and I can handle it.”

Tonbo unsealed a stack of books onto the grass. Earth rose into a low table and two seats.

Kiba stared. ”Books?”

”Before you become a shinobi, theory is your principal training. Missions will later supply experience. These contain the experience of people who survived long enough to record it.”

”How many do I have to read?”

”All of these eventually. Today, three pages.”

Kiba relaxed too quickly.

Guided Insight began with a classification exercise. Tonbo placed five objects before Kiba and asked what Akamaru could smell upon them. Each time Kiba jumped from scent to conclusion, the instruction seal emphasized the missing step: source, age, direction, contamination, alternative explanation. The technique did not give answers. It made the structure of Tonbo’s questions easier to follow.

Kiba finished exhausted in a different way from physical training. He returned home carrying books while Akamaru wore a smaller pack of illustrated cards.

At supper, both stared at their food.

”What happened?” Tsume asked.

”Homework,” Kiba muttered.

Hana laughed when she saw the stack in his room. ”You have called him old man every day, haven’t you?”

”Yes.”

”Then you finally understand. Tonbo-sensei enjoys being provoked because it gives him an excuse to become inventive.”

Kiba stopped chewing. The falls, waves, darkness, and now books rearranged themselves into a pattern he disliked.

”You are lying.”

”Tomorrow I can take you to ask Shikun and Saiji. They survived Tonbo’s lessons before either of us.”

”You only want an excuse to meet them without admitting it.” Kiba finished his meal and fled with Akamaru. ”I have homework.”

Hana remained at the table, speechless and furious.

In his room, Kiba opened the first book. The exercise asked him to divide every claim into three headings: known, inferred, and merely desired. He disliked the third heading immediately. Too many of his answers belonged beneath it.

Akamaru placed one paw across the page. Kiba moved it, read the paragraph again, and began making notes.

For once, neither of them tried to escape the lesson early.

Progress had finally become easier to recognize.

Whatever Tonbo’s motive, the Hokage’s seat and Akamaru’s festival still waited at the end of the path. Reaching them would apparently require more than refusing to fall.
