Naruto: Starting by Reading Minds in Naruto

Tonbo carried a box of sweets and preserved fruit up the path to the Kurama estate.

Yakumo met him beneath the gate. Two years had lengthened her limbs without adding much strength. Her chakra remained vivid, her genjutsu talent unmistakable, and her body too fragile for the training the clan expected of its heir.

”You brought the plum cakes,” she said.

”Kurenai warned me you had discovered how to persuade visitors.”

”I asked politely.”

”Repeatedly, according to her.”

Yakumo accepted the box with a smile and led him into the house. To the world, she was Murakumo’s daughter, orphaned when the creature within her destroyed her parents. Inner Archive preserved the older history in which Murakumo and his wife had never conceived. Both sets of facts carried grief; only one remained visible to anyone without Tonbo’s safeguards. That contradiction no longer tempted him to call Yakumo unreal.

She breathed, learned, resented, hoped, and remembered. Her paintings changed with her moods. She disliked bitter medicine, feared losing control to Ido, and blamed her weak body for disappointing a clan whose expectations existed before she did. Whatever process created her, the person living now possessed moral weight independent of its origin.

”How was your medical examination?” Tonbo asked.

”The same. My chakra is strong and my muscles fatigue too quickly. They changed the tonic.”

The hospital report lay folded beside her paints. Tonbo read it with permission. Her lungs and heart remained structurally sound. The problem appeared when exertion demanded sustained output: muscle fibers accumulated damage too quickly, chakra reinforcement became uneven, and recovery lagged behind an ordinary child’s. No single injury explained it.

Medical ninjutsu could treat the consequences. It could not yet remove the pattern without risking the chakra network that carried Yakumo’s kekkei genkai.

”Kurenai wants another opinion from Tsunade if anyone locates her,” Yakumo said. ”The elders say the clan has already spent enough.”

”The elders do not control whom Kurenai asks.”

”They control my travel.”

”And Hiruzen controls whether clan restrictions become confinement. You are not without recourse.”

Yakumo looked unconvinced, but she refolded the report instead of hiding it.

”And training?”

Her smile faded. ”Kurenai lets me practice painting illusions, but not combat movement. The elders say I must restore the clan. How can I do that from a chair?”

Tonbo set the box aside. ”By remaining alive long enough to decide what restoration means. Murakumo did not ask you to become a weapon.”

”I killed him.”

”Ido killed him. You are responsible for learning your limits and respecting the seal. You are not guilty for a fracture you did not choose and could not control.”

He and Kurenai had explained the creature after stabilizing the seal. Hiding it would have left Yakumo afraid of her own missing memories. Telling her carried its own cost, but it also allowed her to recognize anger, exhaustion, and isolation as warning signs rather than proof she was secretly monstrous.

Their safeguards were deliberately ordinary. Yakumo recorded sleep, pain, and emotional strain in a notebook that contained no judgments about moral worth. Kurenai visited on a fixed schedule so the clan could not isolate her after an incident. Tonbo’s Inner Archive compared any sudden change in his memories of those visits. A seal near Yakumo’s room alerted both tutors if Ido pressed hard enough against its restraint to distort the surroundings.

None guaranteed safety. Together they made danger visible earlier and denied frightened relatives the excuse that only imprisonment remained.

”The clan does not make that distinction,” she said.

”Clans are collections of people. Some will learn it slowly. Some may refuse. Their pace does not change the truth.”

Yakumo looked toward the rear windows. ”Are you here only to lecture me?”

”I also intend to borrow your mountain and fail at ninjutsu where you can laugh at me.”

That restored her interest.

Over two years, Tonbo’s study of the Kurama record had clarified the foundation of Genjutsu Reincarnation. Yin Release shaped what had no physical form. Yang Release granted vitality to physical form. The forbidden technique joined both through a formula distributed across the Kurama bloodline, using generations of chakra, memory, and expectation to produce a living successor.

Its achievements did not excuse its price. The cycle rewrote relationships, created Ido, damaged Yakumo’s health, and erased each incarnation when its purpose ended. Tonbo suspected the founders who constructed it had paid with their own lives and ensured their descendants would continue paying without consent.

His talent leaned decisively toward Yin Release. He could impose form upon information and expectation with unusual precision. His Yang Release was competent rather than exceptional, sufficient for medical support and Living Weave but nowhere near Tsunade’s mastery of living systems.

The distinction also corrected a mistake in his earliest theory. He once treated the Kurama technique as genjutsu becoming real through power alone. The record suggested a constructed partnership instead. Yin Release provided an identity-pattern: appearance, chakra tendencies, fragments of instinct, and the expectation that Yakumo would return. Yang Release supplied continuity as a living organism. The surrounding memory change made society accept the result, but acceptance did not animate her heart.

That meant freeing Yakumo could not be as simple as dispelling the genjutsu. Removing the memory formula might isolate a living girl from every legal and emotional relationship sustaining her. Severing the life-giving component might kill her. Tonbo needed to separate cycle from person, not technique from illusion. He would not reproduce Genjutsu Reincarnation.

He could learn from the boundary it crossed.

Atmospheric Guidance used a far narrower principle. Tonbo did not create life or rewrite the past. He applied a temporary Yin Release pattern to air already near a natural transition, encouraging pressure, moisture, and movement to follow a selected outcome. The effect demanded detailed knowledge of the physical process. Commanding *rain* meant nothing unless the technique defined how rain could form here and now.

Yakumo carried her easel to the overlook behind the estate. Konoha spread below in roofs, trees, and distant walls.

”Wait until I am ready,” she said. ”If it fails in an interesting way, I want to paint it.”

”Your confidence supports me.”

Tonbo placed sensor strips along the ridge and checked the air. Moisture had risen during the warm afternoon. A cooler current approached from the north, but the pressure difference was too weak to produce rain without help.

He gave Yakumo a second task. She would maintain a simple sensory illusion across four painted markers. If Atmospheric Guidance disturbed chakra beyond the intended area, the markers would blur or vanish. Tonbo’s own perception could measure the physical result, while Yakumo’s kekkei genkai would reveal interference within the Yin Release layer.

”If all four disappear?” she asked.

”Release your technique and move behind the barrier post.”

”And if your cloud throws lightning at us?”

”The grounding seals take it. If they fail, we go inside.”

”Your plan contains many failures.”

”Plans that pretend failure is impossible are wishes.”

He formed the sequence.

Clouds gathered above the Kurama hill while sunlight remained over the rest of Konoha. The boundary looked unnaturally sharp. Tonbo adjusted the pattern, widening the gradient so the air could move rather than collide.

Thunder murmured once and died.

The eastern marker blurred. Tonbo reduced the strength shaping condensation and widened the pattern again. The marker returned. He wrote the correction without releasing the technique, training his attention to divide between weather, chakra, and the child assisting him.

Yakumo painted the cloud edge in quick strokes. Her work captured something his measurements did not: the way sunlight beneath the cloud made the gray mass look heavier, almost close enough to touch.

Yakumo glanced from the gray sky to his strained expression. ”It looks constipated.”

Tonbo lost concentration. Half the cloud dispersed.

”Kurenai has corrupted your vocabulary.”

”Anko visited last week.”

”That explains more.”

He reset the strips and tried again. Previous failures had taught him not to force condensation at a single point. The pattern needed thousands of small changes—cooling here, rising air there, space for droplets to combine before their weight overcame the current.

Wind moved across the overlook.

Yakumo lifted her brush. ”Something changed.”

The air smelled of wet stone before any rain touched it.

Tonbo held the pattern steady.
