Tonbo briefed his team after Kento agreed to prepare an amended contract.

”Our current mission remains protection of the candidates,” he said. ”If the estate is attacked before the amendment takes effect, we extract them and report. We defend others encountered along the route when possible. We do not scatter across the compound to preserve property.”

Tsuyoshi frowned. ”If people are being killed, we leave?”

”If engaging protects the people in our custody, we engage. If abandoning twelve children to chase attackers elsewhere feels more heroic, we do not.”

Konoha’s mission code allowed a captain to continue when reality exceeded the assigned rank, withdraw when the team lacked authority or strength, and seek new terms when the client changed the objective. Flexibility existed because information failed. It did not exist to turn every unexpected danger into extra pay.

”I mentioned reward because authority and resources must follow responsibility,” Tonbo continued. ”An S-rank defense requires permission to cross restricted ground, coordinate household guards, and receive intelligence Kento withheld from an escort team.”

Shikyō nodded. ”The rank is a description of exposure, not a price tag.”

”Exactly.”

Tonbo gave them the withdrawal standard before discussing any optional defense. If two sensory methods failed simultaneously, if an S-rank signature entered the field, or if candidate custody split beyond recovery, they would retreat toward Konoha rather than defend the estate. Anyone separated would follow the nearest preassigned route and leave a coded marker.

”A flexible code still needs fixed points,” he said. ”Otherwise fear and pride rewrite it during combat.”

They discussed why wealthy clans attracted violence. The Hyūga supported construction and inspection through the Byakugan. Aburame insect colonies supplied medicine, agriculture, tracking, and specialized materials. Inuzuka knowledge shaped veterinary care and ninken breeding. Economic value made each clan useful to Konoha and created targets beyond ordinary shinobi rivalry.

The discussion changed how Tsuyoshi understood the estate. Decorative water channels also supplied workshops and fire barriers. Guest buildings kept clients away from family archives. Trial equipment was manufactured by clan companies, tested upon clan children, and later sold to guards throughout the country. Hagoromo wealth was not a pile of coins; it was a network of skills, contracts, and people whose dependence upon one another created both strength and vulnerability.

”The Inuzuka do have businesses,” Tsuyoshi said, relieved.

”You thought the compound fed that many ninken through mission wages alone?” Atsushi asked.

”I never reviewed the accounts.”

”That is why no one asked you to.”

Kento returned before the argument developed. He had failed to contact the convoy through either emergency channel. The Hagoromo council authorized an S-rank contingency contract if an attack occurred or communications were confirmed compromised. Payment was secured through accounts outside the estate.

”I hope your warning proves unnecessary,” he said.

”So do I.”

The trial proceeded on schedule rather than leave the candidates concentrated inside a threatened compound. Hagoromo Ki, an instructor with weathered hands and jōnin-level chakra, led twelve children to the gate. Each wore a pale guard across the brow bearing the full-moon crest.

The candidates inspected the Konoha team with equal curiosity.

Two recognized Tonbo’s name from guard reports after the daimyō course. One whispered that he could trap an entire squad in genjutsu without moving. Another pointed out that anyone so dangerous should look less ordinary. Tonbo allowed the argument to continue until Ki ordered them into formation.

Their discipline arrived quickly when demanded. Mockery did not prevent obedience, which made it an irritation rather than an operational problem.

Tonbo no longer covered his face, depriving them of one expected mystery. Tsuyoshi carried Gaku’s travel saddle over one shoulder. Shikyō’s dark glasses and high collar concealed most expression. Atsushi’s pale eyes were active, which one boy interpreted as rudeness until a girl explained the Byakugan.

Their own equipment deserved inspection. Hagoromo vests used layered, wind-resistant fabric over flexible armor. Sealed compartments distributed supplies without loose pouches. Ear pieces operated across frequencies ordinary gusts would drown. Every child carried emergency food, medicine, an anchor line, and a recall flare.

The earpieces were paired in groups of three so the candidates could communicate without crowding one channel. A pressure seal automatically transmitted if a wearer suffered a hard impact. Each vest could deploy two short anchors into stone, but only if the candidate chose a secure angle. Expensive equipment expanded choices; it did not choose correctly.

Tonbo asked the children to explain one another’s tools rather than their own. Three could not. Ki assigned them to review during the climb.

”They have better radios than our border teams,” Tsuyoshi whispered.

”Equipment reflects the environment it serves,” Tonbo said. ”Do not envy it before understanding its maintenance.”

Atsushi observed seals woven through the lining. ”The vest can harden around an impact point.”

”Briefly,” Ki said. ”It prevents debris from penetrating. It cannot make a careless candidate safe.”

He introduced the twelve by name and number. Their ages ranged from eight to twelve. Chakra reserves were unusually large for children, and most showed a strong Wind Release affinity. Only four had completed missions outside clan territory. The others possessed training without experience.

”Your role begins at the valley platform,” Ki told Tonbo. ”Candidates remain below for one month. When exhaustion crosses the limit, retrieve them to the barrier, treat them, and return them after recovery.”

”What thresholds do your instructors use?”

Ki supplied pulse, chakra, attention, injury, and exposure criteria. A candidate who lost directional awareness came out even with reserves remaining. Head impact required examination. Repeated failure at the same route triggered instructor review rather than immediate return.

Tonbo approved. ”Who may cancel the trial?”

”I may. Kento may. You may suspend it for an external attack or barrier failure.”

The children overheard and objected.

”We don’t need Konoha to stop our trial.”

”You are hired observers, not Hagoromo instructors.”

Ki silenced them. ”The wind will decide whether your preparation is enough. The adults decide whether pride is allowed to kill you.”

They left the estate beneath a clear sky. Kento remained behind to coordinate security and verify the lost convoy. Two household guards joined the march, while Tonbo’s team formed a moving perimeter around the candidates.

The route climbed toward northern ridges. Air grew colder and increasingly restless. Birds disappeared first. Trees became shorter, bent south by years of pressure. Loose soil gave way to exposed stone scratched by windblown grit.

At the final camp before Gale Valley, Tonbo inspected every anchor line and radio. The children mocked Konoha uniforms more quietly after watching Atsushi identify a hidden flaw in one vest seal and Shikyō’s insects recover a dropped clasp from beneath six meters of brush.

Tsuyoshi and Gaku ran a scent drill after dark. Each candidate sealed one glove inside a numbered packet, then hid along the camp perimeter. Gaku found all twelve, though wind flowing down from the valley doubled the time for the last two. Shikyō released test insects and watched half retreat from the pressure change before reaching the ridge.

”Tomorrow the environment becomes an active opponent,” Tonbo told the group. ”Do not interpret difficulty as proof the trial is unfair. Do not interpret survival equipment as proof you cannot fail.”

One boy asked whether Konoha students trained under hired guards.

”Konoha students train where instructors can reach them. The uniform changes. The responsibility does not.”

Money had purchased excellent equipment.

Only judgment would determine whether they used it in time.
