Naruto: Starting by Reading Minds in Naruto

Zetsu emerged from a wall high inside Amegakure’s tower.

”Report,” Pain said.

”The journey was worth the inconvenience. I located the Three-Tails and confirmed that it can be captured when our preparations are complete. I also experienced Konoha’s principal genjutsu-release methods. Tonbo is as capable as the last battle suggested.”

Nagato’s attention sharpened through the Deva Path. ”Can you counter Sensory Saturation?”

”The safest counter is to avoid entering the barrier.”

”That is not a counter.”

”Then destroy or repel it before the boundary closes. Shinra Tensei may create the necessary opening, but Tonbo knows your abilities now. He will not offer the same timing twice.”

Pain accepted the criticism. During their first battle, Tonbo appeared to anticipate functions of the Six Paths that no outsider should have known. Nagato considered betrayal unlikely; he had rarely deployed every body together. Tonbo might infer techniques from chakra changes, perceive their shared link, or possess brief predictive awareness through his sensory field.

Whatever the explanation, the next confrontation required distance between the Paths and prepared breaks in their connection. No single illusion would be allowed to contaminate the entire network again.

Nagato also ordered Konan to prepare physical markers outside the Paths’ shared perception. If all six bodies reported the same impossible environment, an independent paper clone could attack the suspected boundary. The measure sacrificed surprise and might still fail, but it created a response that did not depend upon a compromised mind recognizing its own condition.

”Summon the organization,” Pain said.

The Akatsuki gathered through projected images within the sealed meeting space. Kakuzu complained that the summons had interrupted a bounty hunt. Kisame found the interruption promising. Orochimaru regarded the Rinnegan with open interest and suggested that any wasted meeting should be compensated with access to it.

Pain ignored the provocation. ”This concerns a Konoha shinobi. If you encounter him, exercise caution.”

”Kakashi?” one member asked. ”Jiraiya? Shisui?”

Orochimaru’s eyes narrowed. None of those names would require a warning to every member.

Zetsu described Tobitake Tonbo: wide-area sensing, advanced genjutsu, Yamanaka-derived mind techniques, barrier construction, Living Weave, elemental ninjutsu, and enough taijutsu to survive when absorption neutralized projected chakra. He emphasized Sensory Saturation and Nagato’s need to sever the Six Paths link.

He also reported what the Konoha course revealed indirectly. Tonbo favored layered attacks, concealed the moment of capture, and taught allies to distribute verification so that no single compromised authority could control a response. A member who met him should assume that an obvious illusion concealed another route and that any memory recovered afterward might require external confirmation.

Interest replaced impatience.

”A genjutsu that affected the Rinnegan,” Orochimaru said. ”Konoha has grown another valuable specimen since my departure. I will remember the name.”

The remark carried appetite rather than admiration. Orochimaru collected techniques by studying bodies, bloodlines, and minds until ownership lost meaning. Tonbo’s abilities offered no hereditary eye to remove, which made the underlying research more interesting.

Kisame wanted to test the claim. Kakuzu decided a battle without a bounty offered poor value. Others treated Tonbo as a specialized danger rather than an unbeatable opponent. That was the purpose of the warning: information converted surprise into choice.

Pain ended the projection with three instructions. Do not pursue Tonbo without an objective. Do not allow him time to establish a barrier. If any member suspected memory alteration after contact, report through a second channel before acting upon recovered intelligence. Akatsuki did not need to fear one Konoha jōnin; it did need to stop underestimating him.

After the meeting, the masked man confronted Zetsu in a remote forest.

”Will Tonbo interfere with the plan?”

”Not if we choose the method. His illusions can affect even this body, which makes direct exposure inconvenient. But Konoha has given us a profile of his habits and safeguards. Every technique has conditions.”

Zetsu did not mention every sensation endured during training. The important fact was that Tonbo’s genjutsu reached a body whose biology differed from ordinary humans. Resistance based upon unusual anatomy could not be trusted.

”Then identify his.”

The masked man had already survived Minato. He would not allow another Konoha specialist to become an unknown obstacle.

Tonbo knew nothing of the meeting. He returned home after leaving the Inuzuka siblings and found Tenyu and Maki crawling toward him across the floor.

”Daddy,” Tenyu said. ”Up.”

Maki repeated the demand and raised both arms.

Tonbo lifted one child on each side. ”Where is your mother?”

”Mommy,” Maki said without providing direction.

Tōsei appeared from the kitchen. ”Ayame went to help Teuchi. Since you are here, the dishes are waiting.”

”I returned from classified work and advanced genjutsu research.”

”The plates remain unimpressed.”

Tonbo carried the twins to the doorway and formed a one-handed sign. Chakra threads entered the objects in the sink. Cups sprouted small woven hands, plates turned themselves beneath the water, and cloths moved from one surface to the next. Living Weave supplied temporary movement and simple instructions without requiring Tonbo to touch the dirty water.

”Watch carefully,” he told the children. ”This is among the most important applications of ninjutsu. A peaceful household depends upon everyone doing a share.”

The twins stared as bowls washed one another. Both reached toward the sink.

”Not yet.”

”Daddy good,” Tenyu said.

”Good,” Maki agreed.

Their growing vocabulary pleased him more than the successful technique. Tonbo spent the afternoon playing until both children fell asleep, then laid them beside one another and entered his study.

He recorded the new words in the same notebook Ayame used for their first steps, first foods, and changes in sleep. Missions produced official reports and techniques produced research logs. The small record mattered more because no office required it.

The Kurama volume waited upon his desk. He had only skimmed its contents at the compound. Now he traced the sections most relevant to Illusion Body: how a false sensory structure could trigger a real physical response, how the balance of spiritual and physical energy changed the result, and why an effect persisted after its initiating genjutsu ended.

Living Weave approached the boundary from one side. It used Yin Release to give form to information and maintained that form with chakra. The Kurama theories approached from the other: convince mind and body so completely that reality followed the accepted pattern.

Neither allowed effortless miracles. Wind, rain, and lightning did not change because a caster imagined them differently. Physical consequence required an anchor, a medium, and enough energy to pay for the change. Tonbo filled page after page with comparisons.

The Kurama record proposed that spiritual energy could define a pattern while physical energy supplied the means to realize it. Ordinary genjutsu stopped after the definition; Living Weave added constructed chakra as a medium. Illusion Body used Tonbo’s own nerves, muscles, and circulation. A broader technique would need an external medium capable of carrying both instruction and force.

Somewhere between the two approaches lay the solution to Reinforced Frame—and perhaps a broader transformation he had not yet learned to name.

He worked until Ayame returned and called him to supper. The book remained open, marked by slips of paper and questions. Tonbo had not gained Yakumo’s forbidden technique, but he had acquired something more useful to a living researcher: generations of mistakes he no longer needed to repeat.
