Naruto: Starting by Reading Minds in Naruto

Tonbo followed the conspirators far enough to confirm three facts. They had allies inside the Hagoromo guard structure. They expected the main clan escort to remain away for several days. And Gatō, the shipping magnate, had financed the operation through intermediaries so no captured contract would carry his direct seal.

The name was familiar from intelligence files and fractured memories of another life. Gatō built legitimate transport networks, then used hired violence to acquire routes competitors would not sell. His public guards protected warehouses and person. His deniable shinobi threatened suppliers, broke local resistance, and disappeared before officials could connect loss to profit.

Konoha had investigated him twice without obtaining a contract, witness, or payment trail strong enough for action in another jurisdiction. Merchants harmed by his expansion preferred private settlement to becoming examples. Small governments relied upon his ships even while suspecting he had destroyed local competitors. Wealth did not make him untouchable; it distributed the cost of confronting him until no single victim could afford it.

The Hagoromo agreement threatened that leverage. A clan with its own guards, capital connections, and land routes could enter shipping without depending upon Gatō’s network. Sabotaging the partnership before its first major transfer would preserve more than one contract.

Tonbo distrusted the older memories more than the current evidence. The man described in Konoha’s files employed at least two jōnin-level protectors and enough lesser rogues to pressure small countries. Treating him as a future fool surrounded by ordinary thugs would be fatal.

History remembered outcomes, not every resource that failed along the way.

Tonbo returned to the guest house beneath Unseen Presence. Atsushi had his Byakugan active when the door opened and still failed to focus upon him until Tonbo released the genjutsu. Gaku smelled him first. Shikyō’s insects registered a person-shaped absence in their usual movement.

”Captain,” Tsuyoshi said, ”you should announce yourself before testing whether we attack invisible guests.”

”You all detected an inconsistency without striking. That is the correct result.”

Tonbo summarized the conspiracy and unrolled a blank map. His reconnaissance had covered only permitted paths and exterior approaches, so he separated observation from inference. Guard towers, bridges, wells, kitchens, medical rooms, and walls appeared in dark ink. Suspected infiltration routes were marked in red. Possible targets—archives, leadership residences, communications, and the route to Gale Valley—received numbered circles rather than declarations of certainty.

The southern bridge offered the fastest path from guest quarters to the candidates but crossed an open court visible from three towers. A covered service passage took longer and passed the medical storehouse. If alarms failed, the direction of civilians fleeing could reveal which route remained safe. Tonbo assigned each teammate a primary path and a fallback that did not depend upon him giving new orders.

Atsushi would lead through walls if gates were sealed. Tsuyoshi and Gaku would locate separated children. Shikyō would preserve communications by carrying written signals between insect clusters even if radios failed. Tonbo would intercept the largest hostile concentration only after candidate custody was confirmed.

”Memorize this,” he said. ”Do not copy it. If the estate is attacked, we may need the terrain after smoke, darkness, or barriers remove sight.”

Atsushi compared the drawing with what his Byakugan had seen. ”Distances are within a few meters. How did you measure without stopping?”

”Step rhythm, reflected sound, sight lines, and perception. Exactness matters less than knowing where uncertainty remains.”

The map included those uncertainties. Thick walls hid some rooms from chakra perception. A sealed garden disrupted insects. Running water degraded scent along the southern warehouses. Tonbo had not converted missing information into imagined detail.

”Do we warn Kento?” Shikyō asked.

”At dawn. Quietly. Tonight we prepare extraction routes and confirm the trial roster. If the collaborator learns we know, the attack may begin before the candidates move into a defensible location.”

Tsuyoshi looked at the storage scroll from which Tonbo had produced paper, measuring tools, ink, and a compact barrier kit. ”How many scrolls do you carry?”

”Enough.”

”That answer sounds expensive.”

”It is.”

The mission payment covered replenishment, but Tonbo’s household income and years of high-rank work made field convenience affordable. He explained that storage space should serve predictable needs, not pride. A scroll carrying an object no plan required was waste. A scroll that prevented an injured child from waiting for a stretcher was readiness.

”How do I afford readiness?” Tsuyoshi asked.

”Track what missions actually consume. Buy reusable equipment before decorative upgrades. Share clan tools when policy allows. Reach jōnin and accept work with higher responsibility only after you can survive it.”

Tonbo opened one scroll to demonstrate. It contained a field stretcher, bandages, water filters, barrier anchors, spare radio wire, and nutrient paste. None was rare. The value came from knowing its exact place and replacing it after use. A second scroll held specialized woven constructs and research instruments only Tonbo could employ.

”Do not imitate someone else’s pack without imitating his duties,” he said. ”A tracker needs scent samples and paw care before a meteorological instrument.”

Gaku thumped his tail in approval.

”I expected you to say marry someone wealthy.”

Tonbo considered Ayame’s role in their finances. ”Marry someone you trust with money, danger, children, and the truth about your absences. Wealth does not compensate for failing any of those.”

Shikyō tilted his head. ”That answer is less amusing.”

”It is more useful.”

They spent the remainder of the night studying the map and refining signals. Shikyō seeded exit routes with insects. Tsuyoshi gave Gaku cloth from each teammate and obtained scent references for Kento and the candidates from sealed medical packets. Atsushi memorized structural points where Gentle Fist could collapse a wall without bringing a roof down upon civilians.

At sunrise, Tonbo requested a private conversation with Kento.

The director listened without interrupting while Tonbo described unfamiliar shinobi, Gatō’s name, an internal source, and likely objectives. His expression did not change until Tonbo mentioned the escort convoy.

”That agreement was negotiated for four months,” Kento said.

”Then the enemy had four months to influence it. Can you verify the convoy now through a channel not included in normal plans?”

Kento sent two coded messages by different means. Neither received an immediate answer.

”What do you recommend?”

”Delay public alarm. Move noncombatants away from archives and gates under a routine explanation. Change guard rotations without using the schedule office. Keep the candidates together. And amend our contract if you want Konoha to defend the estate rather than only the trial.”

”You discuss payment while warning me of murder.”

”I discuss authority. An A-rank protection mission does not permit me to seize command of your territory. A changed mission defines who can order what when your own chain is compromised.”

Kento understood contracts better than appeals to heroism. ”Draft the amendment.”

”First verify who can authorize it if you die.”

Kento’s first reaction was offense. His second was calculation. The attack plan relied upon decapitating clan authority; a contract locked to one living signer would fail at the precise moment it became necessary.

He identified a council elder, the chief accountant at a distant office, and Hagoromo Ki. Each could activate the guarantee through a different seal. Tonbo requested that none travel together until communications were restored.

The director stared at him, then named three successors and the locations of sealed financial guarantees. The conversation stripped wealth down to its useful forms: food, equipment, information, and obligations that survived the person who purchased them.

Outside, the estate continued preparations for the trial as though no enemy waited beyond its walls.

That appearance served both sides. The conspirators saw routines continue and had no reason to accelerate. Kento quietly moved ledgers, medical supplies, and children too young for the trial into buildings connected to underground exits. Household guards received altered routes described as an exercise. Only four people knew why.

Tonbo disliked using uninformed guards as bait. Telling everyone would expose the warning to the collaborator. He recorded the choice and its reason for later review, because secrecy without accountability was too easily renamed necessity.
