Naruto: Starting by Reading Minds in Naruto

Gale Valley lay in the northern Land of Fire, enclosed by ridges that forced seasonal winds through a narrowing channel. The resulting currents scoured stone, changed direction without warning, and made the central passage lethal during its strongest cycles.

The Hagoromo clan used the outer region as a trial ground.

Maps showed three permitted routes into the outer valley and a blank central region marked only with hazard classifications. The safest route followed stone pillars carved with wind-break seals. The second demanded chakra adhesion across an exposed wall. The third crossed a basin where apparently calm air concealed downward currents strong enough to pin a child against the ground.

The annual trial measured judgment before endurance. Candidates chose a route after reading weather markers. Instructors penalized reckless speed and intervened when pride trapped someone beyond the point of safe retreat.

Tonbo read the crest twice. The name belonged to an old clan, not the Sage of Six Paths whose given name it shared. During the Warring States Period, the Hagoromo had accepted contracts beside and against the Uchiha and Senju according to their employers. They once controlled enough shinobi to influence battles across the Land of Fire.

Hashirama and Madara changed that balance. As the Senju and Uchiha consolidated strength, smaller allies became dependent, expendable, or irrelevant. Hagoromo losses accumulated. Konoha’s founding drew shinobi and contracts toward the village system. The clan survived by reducing its military role and expanding trade, land management, and service to the daimyō.

They did not join Konoha as a unified clan. Some households entered the village over generations; others maintained independent estates under the daimyō’s authority. That ambiguous relationship allowed cooperation without surrendering all clan law. It also meant Konoha could not treat Gale Valley as domestic training land merely because both lay within the Land of Fire.

Now Hagoromo companies moved cloth, tools, and luxury goods across much of the country. A smaller hereditary guard protected clan estates and supplied occasional members to the Guardian Twelve. Their archives and territory remained private.

Tonbo closed the historical volume and opened the current access rules.

Gale Valley admitted clan members during annual trials. Outsiders required direct authorization. The prohibition made sense; a careless visitor could die, and a hostile observer could map defenses or steal techniques developed around the wind.

”You found something interesting.”

Inoichi stood between two archive shelves holding personnel reports. Although he no longer managed the Analysis Team each day, leadership of the Intelligence Division brought him into its records often enough that his old office never felt entirely surrendered.

”A research site I cannot enter,” Tonbo said.

”Which one?”

”Gale Valley. I’m studying a Yin Release pattern that guides atmospheric processes already close to occurring. I produced local rain. For an offensive application, I need to observe a stronger natural system.”

Inoichi read the first page of Tonbo’s notes. ”You are trying to persuade weather with genjutsu.”

”That phrasing is dangerously close to accurate.”

”Can you make it stop raining over the Yamanaka flower fields during harvest?”

”Possibly, if the displaced rain has somewhere safe to fall.”

”Ino will ask the moment she hears. Be prepared to explain why flowers require more atmospheric study than a battlefield.”

Inoichi looked impressed despite trying not to encourage him. ”You developed another secret art before turning twenty-one.”

”A rain shower with extensive preparation. The Second Hokage created techniques that changed the structure of the shinobi world. Comparison is premature.”

”Modesty becomes suspicious when maintained this aggressively.”

Tonbo showed him the access page. ”The valley belongs to the Hagoromo. I will continue searching.”

”You may not need to. They submitted an A-rank mission this morning.”

Inoichi explained that the clan’s largest escort force had departed with a valuable trade convoy. The absence overlapped with the annual youth trial. Hagoromo elders trusted their own instructors inside the valley, but lacked enough active sensors to monitor every child along the outer routes. They wanted one Konoha jōnin and three sensory chūnin for temporary support.

The contract placed medical evacuation above secrecy. Hagoromo instructors retained authority over the trial, but Konoha sensors could remove a child without permission if vital signs crossed defined limits. Any dispute would be reviewed after the candidate was safe. Tonbo approved of that clause.

The clan prohibited copying trial techniques, entering sealed caverns, or mapping the inner estate. Environmental readings from the outer valley could be retained if they excluded defensive positions and personal chakra signatures. The terms anticipated exactly the research Tonbo wanted, suggesting the mission had been drafted by someone who understood Konoha would not accept vague restrictions.

”The assignment grants entry?” Tonbo asked.

”To designated sectors and only during the trial. Research cannot interfere with protection. Anything you learn about clan techniques remains confidential.”

”That is sufficient.”

”Apply through Hiruzen. The village is not facing an urgent deployment, and your sensory range makes you an obvious choice.”

Tonbo reviewed the mission summary. The coincidence deserved suspicion before gratitude. ”Why hire outsiders for children if the clan still supplies the Guardian Twelve?”

”Because most Hagoromo are merchants, administrators, and craftsmen now. Their trained force can defend estates or escort cargo, not perform both while supervising a dangerous trial. This convoy supports a new shipping agreement worth more than the mission fee.”

The explanation matched the records. Tonbo still marked the timing for verification. Convenient opportunities were not automatically traps, but treating convenience as proof of destiny was how traps became effective.

”Who selected the preferred team profile?”

”Hagoromo Kento, a company director responsible for the trial logistics. He requested clan-trained sensors rather than general scouts.”

Inoichi pulled Kento’s public file. The man possessed chūnin-level chakra but no registered village rank. He managed transport contracts, negotiated with the capital, and had never failed a payment to Konoha. Complaints described him as arrogant toward hired shinobi and meticulous about contract language. Neither trait made him an enemy; both required clear boundaries.

”Any known link to the spatial intrusions?” Tonbo asked.

”None. I checked after the timing caught my attention. The clan’s convoy schedule was set four months ago. Their escort shortage is genuine.”

That did not prove the mission harmless. It did remove the easiest reason to refuse it.

”And the children?”

”Twelve candidates, ages eight to twelve. The inner course tests wind resistance and chakra control. Konoha’s team observes the outer boundary and intervenes only for medical danger or breach.”

Tonbo could study the valley without approaching the most private portion of the trial. Sensor duty would also generate legitimate readings of pressure, movement, and chakra across the terrain.

”I will request it.”

Inoichi handed him the mission reference. ”Complete your research quickly. Every hour you spend inventing weather is an hour someone else covers the Analysis Team.”

”Shimon manages routine work.”

”Shimon sends difficult cases to me.”

”That sounds like confidence in your experience.”

”It feels like paperwork.”

”You are head of Intelligence.”

”A title is not consent to every badly organized report in the building.”

”You approved the organization.”

Inoichi stared at him until Tonbo accepted the mission reference and stopped helping.

Tonbo smiled and returned the historical volumes. Outside the archive windows, Konoha’s air remained almost still. Gale Valley promised the opposite: a natural force too large to imitate cheaply and too consistent to dismiss as chance.

If Atmospheric Guidance could influence even a small portion of that system, the technique might become more than local rain.

If it could not, the failure would define its limits before Tonbo trusted it in battle.
