The Comeback of the Cannon-Fodder Supporting Actress

Xiao Zhang hurriedly entered the home.

As soon as he got home, he saw Li Wanping sitting on the sofa in the living room.

”Mom.” Xiao Zhang called out.

Li Wanping noticed a hint of anger on his face and asked worriedly, ”What’s wrong?”

Xiao Zhang first glanced upstairs, ”My grandpa isn’t here, right?”

Li Wanping shook her head.

Xiao Zhang sat down and complained to Li Wanping, ”Mom, you don’t know how despicable Xiao Tong is. She actually teamed up with outsiders to set me up. I lost a lot on this project, and if Grandpa finds out, I won’t be happy.”

Speaking of Xiao Tong, Li Wanping also got very angry.

Xiao Tong is a thorn in Li Wanping’s side, evidence of her lover’s betrayal, and has been an unbearable existence for her over the years.

”That foul girl.” Li Wanping cursed, ”Whose family inheritance isn’t left to the son? Yet she comes out to stir up trouble. Son, don’t be afraid; I’m here to support you.”

Xiao Zhang looked around, ”Mom, can you ask Xi Jingchen to give me some advice, or maybe let him show me some new project ideas.”

”Okay.” Li Wanping agreed, ”Tomorrow I’ll go see Xi Jingchen and ask him for his thoughts.”

Xiao Zhang sighed, ”If only he could graduate earlier. Once he graduates, I’ll arrange for him to join the company, and then I won’t have to fear Xiao Tong anymore.”

Li Wanping also hopes Xi Jingchen can graduate soon. Xi Jingchen is smart and creative. With him helping Xiao Zhang, Xiao Zhang certainly won’t suffer losses again.

”He’s about to enter his fourth year, and internships will be arranged. Then I’ll let him join the company to assist you.”

Li Wanping gently reassured Xiao Zhang, ”During this time, put on a good front and make sure Grandpa isn’t too upset. Once Xi Jingchen is in the company, have him work for you. If the project makes money, just say you did it, let him do the work behind the scenes, and you take the credit. Soothe Grandpa first.”

The mother and son discussed for a while, and Xiao Zhang felt a bit better.

Feeling better, he couldn’t stay at home, grabbed his car keys, and was about to go out to play.

Li Wanping couldn’t persuade him to stay, so she let him go. However, as Xiao Zhang was leaving, Li Wanping still advised, ”Don’t mess around, don’t speed, and don’t associate with disreputable women. In a few days, I’ll find a good family girl with good character for you. Grandpa loves gentle and kind girls. If you marry such a wife, Grandpa will definitely be pleased.”

Xiao Zhang was a bit impatient but still listened to Li Wanping before leaving.

The next day was Saturday, and Li Wanping called Xi Jingchen in the mid-morning.

At that time, Xi Jingchen was out playing with Xia Man and Anning. He quickly walked to the side and whispered, ”Mom, what’s up?”

Li Wanping smiled, ”Jingchen, do you have time today...”

Xi Jingchen hadn’t finished speaking when the phone was snatched by Anning.

Anning shouted into the phone, ”My grandson doesn’t have time. He’s been spending time with this old lady recently. Li Wanping, don’t think I don’t know what you’re plotting. Let me tell you, if you dare use my grandson again, I’ll never forgive you.”

Li Wanping was startled.

She quickly hung up.

After hanging up, her heart was still pounding with discomfort.

It took her a while to calm down.

Li Wanping frowned, ”Why did that old hag come?”

She quickly took out her phone and dialed Xi Zhenhua’s number.

Xi Zhenhua was in Jingxia Village watching workers digging the foundation.

When he heard his phone ring, he took it out and saw it was Li Wanping calling, and quickly answered.

”Wanping, is there something you need?”

Li Wanping asked anxiously, ”When did Old Madam arrive in Su Hai? Why didn’t you tell me?”

Xi Zhenhua felt a bit uncomfortable after hearing this but still replied warmly, ”She came yesterday, saying she missed her grandson, just wanted to visit.”

”Did she say when she’ll leave?” Li Wanping asked.

Xi Zhenhua really didn’t know, ”It’s not certain.”

”Make sure she leaves soon.” Li Wanping urged, ”I want Jingchen to work in the company, but with her always around, how does that work? You know how badly she treated me back then. I don’t want to see her now...”

Xi Zhenhua was silent for a moment, ”Wanping, tell me the truth, what really happened back then? Did my mom really mistreat you?”

”What’s wrong with you?” Li Wanping suddenly screamed, ”Do you think I’m lying? Don’t you believe me?”

Xi Zhenhua didn’t say anything, and after a while, he said, ”I still have things to do, I’ll hang up first.”

Before Li Wanping could say anything, Xi Zhenhua hung up.

He held the phone, standing blankly for a while before smiling self-mockingly, then returned to supervise the work.

Li Wanping cursed a few times while holding the phone and sat angrily on the sofa trying to think.

Anning, Xi Jingchen, and Xia Man played for a while, then she suggested looking at houses.

Xi Jingchen also wanted a home of his own; he planned to marry Xia Man after graduation. Having a house would give him more confidence for marriage proposals at Xia Man’s family, and it would ease things after marriage. He wanted Xia Man to have a better life, so a house was essential.

Thus, the three of them visited several real estate developments.

One of the developments was not far from Suhai University, a newly built community. The community had great facilities and good security, regarded as a high-end community in Suhai, home to elites from various industries.

Anning and the others toured the community, looked at several houses for sale, and eventually Anning found a house with four bedrooms and two living rooms she liked. She asked Xia Man, ”How about this one? The layout is good, the rooms are spacious, whether bedroom or living room, the area is big enough, and it’s a fully-furnished house ready to move in.”

Xia Man also liked the house but said, ”Grandma, you should ask Jingchen since he’s buying it, he must like it.”

Anning pouted, ”Why ask him? If you like it, that’s all that matters. If you like it, he wouldn’t dare say he doesn’t.”

Xi Jingchen quickly waved his hand, ”You decide. I’m okay with anything, as long as you guys like it, I’m fine.”

Anning pulled Xia Man along to take a tour of the house. She could see Xia Man genuinely liked it. Then Anning told the staff at the sales office, ”We’ll book this house first, pay a deposit, and finalize the payment in a few days, okay?”

It was mainly because Anning didn’t have enough cash to pay in full. She hadn’t sold the jade and gems she brought, so she was definitely short of money for the house.

She thought if it didn’t work out, she’d ask Xiao Yuan for money. Anyway, she’d buy the house first.

The service attitude here was really good, and the staff smiled and agreed. Anning then paid the deposit.

Afterward, Anning urged Xi Jingchen to quickly sell his jade.

Anning even told Xi Jingchen, ”You sell your jade first, see if the money is enough. If it’s not enough, I’ll give you more.”

Xi Jingchen hadn’t spent his three years in Suhai City idly. Although he was studying, he helped Xiao Zhang with lots of ideas, and he didn’t give them for free. Xiao Zhang paid him, and he accepted.

In these three years, Xi Jingchen had saved some money. He calculated, ”It should be enough. Grandma paid the deposit, and this amount is to be deducted when paying the full house price. I have some money as well; combined with the sales of jade, there should be a surplus.”

Anning smiled, ”The surplus can be used to buy a car for Manman.”

”Great.”

Xi Jingchen also smiled.

Xia Man wrapped her arm around Anning’s, ”Grandma, you can’t keep spoiling me like this, or I’ll become spoiled.”

Anning patted Xia Man’s head, ”What’s there to fear? We can afford to spoil you. You are our Jingchen’s beloved, you must be cherished and pampered. Let me tell you, when you and Jingchen marry, household chores must be his to do. Don’t take everything upon yourself. We women must treat ourselves well. Eat when you want, drink when you want, living happily is most important.”

Xia Man wore a blissful smile, ”Grandma, you are so good to me. I must have accumulated blessings over several lifetimes to have such an enlightened and amiable elder like you. Rest assured, I will definitely be filial to you with Jingchen in the future.”

Anning gave Xi Jingchen a sideways glance, ”Did you hear that? You see how wonderful Manman is, how filial she is? And you haven’t said a single nice word.”

”My fault, my fault.” Xi Jingchen could only helplessly touch his nose.

But in his heart, he was very happy.

Even if criticized, Xi Jingchen was still pleased, because Anning treated Xia Man well. Seeing Anning and Xia Man getting along so harmoniously made him feel truly happy inside.
