Journey to Planar World

Charlie shifted his gaze from the television screen, then leaned his back against the sofa while looking at Mahiru, who was awaiting his answer.

”The primary reason is simple, Shiina-san. I feel highly bored if I have to constantly stay at home without doing any activities whatsoever when you go to school.” He explained while smiling casually. ”In addition, having an official identity as a teacher is the most legitimate disguise and reason so that I can be in the school area to watch over you directly from a close distance.”

Mahiru appeared to weigh that answer, then looked at Charlie’s facial features which still looked highly fresh.

”If the goal is merely to watch over and blend in with the school environment, why didn’t you choose to become a transfer student instead?”

”With your physical appearance which is still highly young, becoming a transfer student would definitely make it far easier for you to mingle with the others.”

Hearing that suggestion, Charlie formed a wry smile. He rubbed the back of his head with a somewhat reluctant expression.

”Ah... regarding that, I truly do not want to repeat the days of being a student for a second time. For me, once in a lifetime is enough to live a student life routine full of restrictions.”

The intelligent Mahiru was instantly able to catch the true essence behind that refusal. She narrowed her pair of eyes, then summarized in a subtle sarcastic tone.

”So in conclusion, you are just lazy to repeat studies and do piles of school assignments again, right?”

Charlie laughed dryly, having no intention of refuting the sharp guess from the girl beside him.

”Haha, yeah... you are not wrong. Doing exams and homework is truly not my style.”

To avoid awkwardness, he fluidly shifted the direction of their conversation right away.

”By the way, how was my teaching in your class this morning? As one of my students, I want to hear an honest opinion from you, Shiina-san.”

Mahiru stared at him with a slightly puzzled look, then asked back to confirm something.

”Why ask that all of a sudden? Don’t tell me, was that truly your first experience standing in front of a class as an educator?”

”Yes, it was a pure first experience in my entire life.” Charlie confessed honestly, then raised one of his eyebrows. ”Is there something wrong with the way I delivered the material earlier?”

Mahiru shook her head slowly. The doubt on her face faded, replaced by a gaze full of sincere admiration.

”No, there is absolutely nothing wrong. On the contrary, I think you teach exceptionally well.”

”Charlie-kun. You succeeded in explaining biology lesson material that is usually rigid with a highly interesting narrative delivery, not boring, and the language is very easy to understand by the entire class. I think all the students like you very much.”

Hearing such high praise from the school’s star student, Charlie rubbed his chin slowly while nodding in satisfaction.

”I see... Good then. In that case, I decide to keep maintaining that kind of teaching style for the next meetings.”

After that long chat regarding school ended, a comfortable silence wrapped the living room once more.

The two of them continued watching the TV program in silence without any more awkwardness between them.

An hour later, Mahiru glanced at the wall clock, then stood up from the sofa while bidding farewell to return inside her room in order to complete some unfinished homework.

Time continued to roll until the night grew much later.

Precisely at 10:12 PM, Charlie finally turned off the television screen using the remote.

He stretched his body muscles which felt a bit stiff, then prepared himself to sleep on the sofa since realizing tomorrow morning he had to wake up early again to carry out his duties at school.

Right when he was about to position his body, a soft sound was heard.

The door to Mahiru’s room opened, and the girl stepped out while clutching an extra pillow and a thick, fragrant blanket against her chest. She walked approaching the sofa then handed over those sleeping supplies to Charlie.

”Use this so that you won’t feel cold, Charlie-kun.” She said softly.

”Thank you, Shiina-san. This helps a lot.” Charlie answered while receiving the blanket and pillow with a warm smile.

”You’re welcome. Good night, Charlie-kun.”

”Good night, Shiina-san. Have a good sleep.”

After the two of them exchanged greetings, Mahiru stepped back into her room and closed the door slowly.

Not long afterward, Charlie walked toward the wall switch to turn off the remaining main lights.

In that instant, the entire room inside the apartment unit turned into pitch black, leaving a peaceful night silence as the two of them slowly drifted off toward dreamland.

Three days passed by so quickly.

Within that time frame, the Abyssal Devourer did not take any action whatsoever.

It seemed that, after successively experiencing the loss of two of its host bodies at the hands of Charlie and Elena, the creature chose to become far more cautious in moving its remaining pawns.

At Seijo High School, the school bell rang loudly, signaling the end of a class period and the beginning of a subject change.

Charlie immediately tidied up the pile of textbooks and his biology lesson materials from atop the podium table, then stepped out to leave the classroom which was starting to become rowdy with students.

While walking along the second-floor corridor which was relatively quiet, his footsteps slowed down when he crossed paths with a woman of charming looks with mixed Japanese-Russian blood.

”Good afternoon, Charlie-sensei. You seem to have highly adjusted yourself to your new role as a teacher, huh~” the woman teased with a meaningful smile curved on her lips.

”Good afternoon, Elena-sensei. All of that could happen certainly thanks to your help and guidance.” Charlie answered in a formal, casual tone for the sake of maintaining professionalism in the school environment.

The two of them only exchanged brief words as necessary before finally continuing their steps to fulfill their respective duties.

Elena walked toward the direction of the school infirmary for the sake of running her role as a nurse, while Charlie continued his steps toward the teachers’ office.

However, in the middle of the corridor toward the teachers’ office, Charlie’s steps suddenly halted when a female student suddenly stepped forward and blocked his path.

He observed her face for a moment and realized that he did not know what her name was.

The girl had never appeared on the glass screen in his past life memories, acting only as a mob character.

In other words, the other party was nothing more than just an anonymous character inside the anime series whose appearance merely functioned to liven up the background atmosphere.

Of course, in this world, the anime Otonari Tenshi-sama was no longer just two-dimensional fiction; everyone here was a real human who breathed and possessed their own lives.

The girl squeezed the edge of her uniform nervously, her face flushing crimson as she looked up staring at Charlie.

”Ano... Sensei. Let me introduce myself, my name is Watanabe Haruhi from class 2-C. If... if Sensei doesn’t mind, could Sensei spare a little bit of your time to speak with me?”

Charlie put on a friendly smile and complied with her request politely.

”Of course, Watanabe-san. But please don’t take too long, because the entry bell for the next subject has already rung and the teacher who teaches in your class will definitely arrive soon.”

Unbeknownst to the two people in the middle of the corridor, Mahiru happened to be walking past that area to head to the restroom.

Her footsteps suddenly stopped when her pair of eyes caught the figure of Charlie interacting intimately with a female student.

Reflexively, without knowing what the reason was, Mahiru’s body moved on its own to hide behind the wall of the corridor corner.

Once realizing her impulsive action, Mahiru was suddenly beset by an extraordinary confusion inside her heart.

(Why do I have to hide like a thief? Charlie-kun is only a teacher and my roommate, so interacting with another student is a highly natural thing.)

However, right at the moment Mahiru was thinking about the strangeness of her own attitude, she heard the female student named Haruhi throw out a highly shocking sentence with a half-shouting voice due to nervousness.

”Actually... I have liked Sensei since the first day Sensei taught at this school! If Sensei doesn’t mind, would Sensei like to go on a date with me?!”

Hearing that sudden confession of love, Charlie exhaled a long breath. His facial expression remained calm, yet his gaze softened, full of guilt.

”Watanabe-san, I highly appreciate and feel glad for the bravery as well as the sincere confession you have just delivered.”

”However, I must ask for the deepest forgiveness... I cannot accept your feelings and must refuse them.”

Haruhi’s eyes instantly turned glassy, holding back an overflow of disappointment. With a voice that began to tremble, she looked up staring at him.

”Am... am I refused merely because our current status is that of a teacher and student, Sensei?”

Charlie nodded firmly, providing a realistic understanding.

”Yes, you are right. No matter in what country, a romantic relationship between a teacher and their student is a taboo thing by social norms. Society out there will always deem that kind of relationship as something disgraceful and improper.”

Pausing his sentence for a moment, he stared at Haruhi with a serious look.

”And in a situation like that, the party that will always get the largest portion of blame and be judged by the public is the teacher’s side.”

”They will accuse me of having used my position to seduce my own student, and my teaching career would definitely be ruined to pieces in an instant. So, Watanabe-san... save that precious feeling of yours, and look for a man of the same age or your classmate as the right partner in the future.”

Haruhi bit her lower lip, her tears slowly dripping. She bowed deeply in a hurry.

”Sorry... forgive me for having troubled and disturbed Sensei’s time!”

After throwing out that sentence, Haruhi instantly turned around and ran fast along the corridor while sobbing, leaving Charlie alone.

Seeing the figure of the young girl slowly disappear behind the corridor turn, Charlie could only form a meaningful, bitter smile. He rubbed the back of his head, then complained softly to himself.

”Haaah... puppy love in youth is indeed always full of troublesome drama.”
