Sweet Rebirth: The Little Healer

”Happy, so happy!” Hua Yusen answered without thinking. But when he saw Zhao Nuanyue’s somewhat angry expression, he quickly explained, ”I’m happy that she and Li Gongming are finally together and even have a child. Now she’ll never come and pester me again.”

Hearing this, Zhao Nuanyue finally nodded, satisfied. ”That’s more like it.”

”But I’m also a little envious of Li Gongming. They aren’t even engaged yet, and they already have a child,” Hua Yusen said wistfully. ”Look at us—we’re engaged and about to get married. You should stop kicking me out at night.”

”No way!” Zhao Nuanyang and Little Red Carp, who were busy eating, said in unison.

Having a baby before getting married was considered highly immoral.

Zhao Nuanyue and Hua Yusen froze. Then, Zhao Nuanyue’s face flushed red as she smacked Hua Yusen on the shoulder and said irritably, ”What are you saying in front of the kids? We only have two months left. Can’t you wait?”

With Zhao Nuanyang and Little Red Carp staring at him with their big eyes, Hua Yusen didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. ”I can wait, I can wait!”

”That’s more like it.” Hearing this, Zhao Nuanyue changed the subject. ”Alright, let’s not talk about this. Do you think Li Gongming will marry Guo Dongmei?”

”He will, of course he will,” Hua Yusen replied. ”They’ve slept together, and now they have a child. How could they not get married? Although the Guo Family can’t compare to the Li family, if the Li family wants to be respected, they can’t afford to lose face.”

’Hua Yusen’s answer reminded Zhao Nuanyue of his previous life. Even though he knew that child wasn’t his, he had endured it for the sake of his reputation and for the Hua family.’

Zhao Nuanyue shook her head. ”I think it’ll be quite difficult for Guo Dongmei to marry into the Li family. After all, the Wu Family also wants an alliance with them. And that Wu Jingjing is dead set on marrying Li Gongming and no one else. The Li family, in turn, wants to win over the Wu Family. Given Old Sir Li’s snobbish, calculating nature, he’ll likely agree to a match with the Wu Family. That makes things very difficult for Guo Dongmei!”

”That can’t be right!” Hua Yusen shook his head, finding it hard to believe. ”But Guo Dongmei is already carrying Li Gongming’s child. They can’t just refuse to marry and let the child be illegitimate, can they?”

”Heh, the Li family would sacrifice anything to climb higher. What are the Guo Family and one child to them?” Zhao Nuanyue scoffed. ”Just you watch. Guo Dongmei’s hard days are still to come. Her biggest leverage right now is the child in her belly. If she loses the child, or if the Li family gives the Guo Family some compensation and lets Guo Dongmei give birth without granting her any official status, that might be acceptable to them.”

”I-It couldn’t be, could it?” Hua Yusen was no longer so sure. ’Would the Li family really abandon all sense of shame just to climb higher?’

’And would the Guo Family really ignore Guo Dongmei’s happiness just for their own gain?’

”Heh, we’ll just have to wait and see,” Zhao Nuanyue said with a smile. ’That was her prediction. She believed it might just become reality in the near future.’

Little Red Carp picked up a flaky pastry, held it to her sister’s lips, and said, ”Sister, have a bite!”

Zhao Nuanyue took it and had a few bites.

”Thank you, Little Red Carp,” Zhao Nuanyue said with a smile. ’Time to push aside all those messy theories. Right now, it’s time to play with Little Red Carp.’

Seeing her sister smile, Little Red Carp handed another piece to Hua Yusen and said, ”Brother-in-law, you need to eat and get strong to protect us. Those two from earlier both bullied my sister. You can’t let them get away with it.”

Hua Yusen nodded. ”Mm, I won’t let them get away with it.”

’He wouldn’t let anyone who had ever bullied Zhao Nuanyue get away with it.’

’Guo Dongmei and the Guo Family were just the Li family’s lapdogs.’

’And as for the Li family... heh. After doing so many vile things, they still dream of soaring to the top. They haven’t stopped to think if their victims would allow it, or if all the other clever people out there would just let them be.’

”You’re the best, Brother-in-law!” Little Red Carp praised. ”This way, those people won’t dare bully us anymore.”

After their meal, they visited a nearby scenic area before finally heading home.

Zhao Nuanyue cooked, and Hua Yusen helped.

Zhao Nuanyang started to go over and help, but Little Red Carp pulled him back and whispered, ”Brother, don’t be a third wheel.”

”I really just wanted to help,” Zhao Nuanyang said, a bit flustered. His sister had seen right through him.

Little Red Carp giggled, a mischievous glint in her eyes. ”It’s broad daylight. Brother-in-law wouldn’t dare take advantage of Sister.”

”Er, uh, Little Red Carp, you’re still little. You shouldn’t say things like that,” Zhao Nuanyang said, speechless. ’Although that was exactly what he was thinking, he didn’t want to hear it coming from her.’

’Sigh, it’s so strange hearing a child talk like an adult!’

”But I’m not really a child. You guys shouldn’t treat me like one,” Little Red Carp protested. ’If I acted like a normal kid, I’d just be an idiot.’

”Alright then!” Zhao Nuanyang froze for a moment, then gave a wry smile. ’His sister wasn’t an ordinary person, much less an ordinary child.’

In the kitchen, as Zhao Nuanyue cooked, she said to Hua Yusen, ”Hua, when you leave, take the face masks I made for Aunt Hua with you. Let her try them first. If they don’t work well, I’ll change the formula next time.”

”Okay, thanks for going to the trouble,” Hua Yusen said with a smile. ’Seeing Zhao Nuanyue take the initiative to build a good relationship with his mother proved how much she valued him and the Hua family.’

’And because she took it so seriously, using her own skills to be good to his parents and younger siblings, everyone in the Hua family, from top to bottom, adored her.’

’Even his conservative father, Hua Zhiqiang, was growing more and more impressed with her.’

’That was true ability, true charisma.’

”It’s no trouble,” Zhao Nuanyue said with a lovely smile. ”It’s all for family. Once I get a letter from my mother and have her address, I’ll send some to her, too.”

Hearing Zhao Nuanyue mention her mother, Xia Yingyu, Hua Yusen hesitated for a moment before carefully asking, ”Nuanyue, have you ever resented your mother?”

Zhao Nuanyue’s hands paused their kneading. She sighed and said slowly, ”I did. But later, I came to understand. It was because I was too weak; I couldn’t protect myself, and I couldn’t protect her. My mother is a gentle woman, and she needs a man’s love and care—something a child can’t provide. As for the past, she never truly hurt me, so the hatred is gone. Any lingering resentment faded as I grew stronger. Now, she’s with Zhao Jinghai. She has a son, a home. In a way, that’s its own kind of happiness. She is my mother. I couldn’t give her that happiness, so when I saw that Zhao Jinghai could, I let it go.”

After hearing Zhao Nuanyue’s words, Hua Yusen was silent for a long time. He gazed tenderly at the kind woman before him. ’How strong and broad-minded she must be to let go of that resentment!’
