Sweet Rebirth: The Little Healer

Zhao Nuanyue’s face was flushed, her eyes glistening, making her look utterly captivating.

Just as the two were gazing at each other, savoring the moment, Little Red Carp’s crisp voice rang out.

”Sister, Sister...” Little Red Carp’s voice arrived before she did. ”Little Red Carp is here to see Big Brother-in-law!”

Hearing Little Red Carp call him ”Big Brother-in-law,” Hua Yusen felt instantly refreshed.

The moment Little Red Carp entered the room, Hua Yusen strode over, scooped her up, and lifted her high into the air. It was a game they often played back in Nianqiao Village. Even though Little Red Carp was a bit chubbier than before, Hua Yusen could still lift her with ease.

”Brother-in-law, have you eaten?” Little Red Carp asked in a high, childish voice. ”Sister made you some delicious black fish soup. She wouldn’t let me have any and brought it all for you.”

Zhao Nuanyue was speechless. ’And who was the little rascal who just drank two bowls of it?’

”Oh dear, that’s not right of your sister. How could she not give any to our adorable Little Red Carp? I’ll have to give her a talking-to later,” Hua Yusen said with a laugh, bouncing Little Red Carp in his arms. ’This little tyke has gotten much heavier.’

Little Red Carp was not happy to hear that. ”It doesn’t really matter if I had any or not,” she said. ”I was just trying to say that Sister is really good to you, good to you with her whole heart. So you have to be good to her, too. Otherwise, I won’t like you, and my brother will beat you up.”

Zhao Nuan Yang, standing nearby, felt a bit awkward when he heard this. ’I can’t beat Hua Yusen in a fight, though.’

’Still, if Hua Yusen ever bullies my sister, I’ll find a way to beat him up and get revenge for her, even if I can’t win.’

”Hua, congratulations on your recovery,” Zhao Nuan Yang said with a smile. ”Little Red Carp was just kidding. Please don’t be upset.”

”Thank you,” Hua Yusen replied with a smile. ”Little Red Carp is right. Even if she was joking, I’ll take her words to heart. I will absolutely be good to Nuanyue. Your sister has been taking care of me all this time, so I’m sorry to have troubled you all.”

”As long as you woke up, my silly sister wouldn’t have to spend a lifetime waiting in misery,” Zhao Nuan Yang said with feeling. ”Sometimes, I really admire her. Even when everyone else had given up hope, she never did. And because of her faith, this faint hope became a reality. It’s a miracle.”

”It is,” Hua Yusen said, turning to look at Zhao Nuanyue. ”She is a silly girl, but I promise I will spend the rest of my life cherishing and protecting her.”

”Good.” Zhao Nuan Yang smiled, then looked at Little Red Carp. ”Little Red Carp, you should get down now. Don’t tire out your brother-in-law.”

Hua Yusen wasn’t tired at all; he felt full of energy. He shook his head and said, ”Little Red Carp isn’t heavy. I can hold her just fine!”

’But Little Red Carp didn’t want to be held by Hua Yusen forever. It wasn’t as comfortable as standing on her own two feet. Besides, she was his little sister-in-law. Even though she was young, it wasn’t proper for her big brother-in-law to hold her like this all the time. It just wouldn’t do!’

The little Carp Spirit had her own peculiar principles.

”Brother-in-law, you can put me down. I’m a big girl; I can walk on my own,” Little Red Carp insisted. While Hua Yusen had been holding her, she sensed that he had completely absorbed the Spiritual Power within his body.

He hadn’t just recovered his health; his body had been nourished and tempered by the Spiritual Energy. Once Hua Yusen was discharged and returned to work, he would understand the changes that had taken place.

Since Little Red Carp was insistent, Hua Yusen relented and set her down.

”Big Brother-in-law, we were supposed to go to Brick City today, but we came to see you instead,” Little Red Carp said with a pout. ”We’re going next week. Will you come with us? Please?”

”Of course!” Hua Yusen agreed. ’Even after I’m discharged, Elder Gu probably won’t arrange work for me right away. So, I should have time next week to take Little Red Carp, Zhao Nuanyue, and Zhao Nuan Yang out to have some fun.’

Zhao Nuanyue and Little Red Carp were both delighted to hear his answer.

Just then, Hua Yufen, Hua Yulin, Feng Wanru, and Hua Zhiqiang arrived, and the hospital room was suddenly crowded with people.

After greeting the Hua family, Zhao Nuan Yang picked up Little Red Carp and stepped outside.

Hua Zhiqiang felt a measure of relief seeing Zhao Nuanyue there and noticing his son’s excellent spirits.

’At least this Zhao Nuanyue is a lucky person,’ he thought. ’Being with my son, she can bring him good fortune.’

’Although I don’t believe in spirits, before the engagement, my wife Feng Wanru went to see Master Yuan to check their horoscopes and pick an auspicious date. The engagement was meant to be a joyous event to improve our son’s luck, and unexpectedly, it actually woke him up from what was essentially a vegetative state.’

’This is a tremendous blessing for the Hua family. We’ve gained back more than just a son; we’ve regained the future and hope of our family.’

Zhao Nuanyue took the lunch box and thermos to the kitchen to clean them, leaving Hua Yusen to speak with his family.

”Yu Sen, did the doctor say when you can be discharged?” Feng Wanru asked. She had already gotten everything ready at home, just waiting for her son’s return.

”Doctor Sun is coming for a check-up this afternoon. If there are no issues, I can be discharged then,” Hua Yusen said with a smile. ”Mom, Dad, brother, sister—it’s been hard on you all these days. I’m sorry for making you worry. Thankfully, I’m awake now, and I’ll work hard together with you from now on.”

”Yusen, don’t say such things. We’re family,” Hua Zhiqiang said. ”Just focus on your recovery and don’t worry about anything else. Things are relatively stable outside; we can manage.”

Hua Yusen nodded. ”Alright. I’ll catch up on things first, then get back to work.”

Seeing that her parents had finished speaking, Hua Yufen sat beside her brother and said with a smile, ”Big Brother, now that you’re awake, I want to ask Father, in your presence, to call off my engagement to Zheng Jiabin.”

”What?” Feng Wanru was stunned. ”Yufen, weren’t you perfectly happy with the Zheng Family? Did that boy Zheng Jiabin do something to you?”

Hua Yulin, standing nearby, was also startled. But then he recalled something his sister had said earlier and realized she was truly determined to break off the engagement.

”Nonsense! Marriage is a serious affair, not a child’s game!” Hua Zhiqiang rebuked her. ”Our family already became the laughingstock of Jincheng City when the Guo Family broke off their engagement. It was only because your brother woke up that the Guo Family lost face in turn. This just goes to show, whether you’re the one breaking it off or the one being left, an ended engagement makes you a joke. Our Hua family may have improved our standing in Jincheng City, but there are still plenty of people waiting to see us fail. You’re old enough to know better! How can you be so thoughtless?”

Hua Zhiqiang’s words plunged the room into a tense silence.

Zhao Nuanyue faintly heard the words ”broken engagement” and thought for a moment they were talking about Hua Yusen. She pressed her ear to the door to listen more closely, only to realize they were discussing Hua Yufen, not her and Hua Yusen.

’Although I’m Hua Yusen’s fiancée, we aren’t married yet,’ Zhao Nuanyue thought. ’And even if we were, it wouldn’t be my place as the sister-in-law to meddle in my little sister-in-law’s business. After all, Hua Yufen has her parents and brothers to handle it.’
