When the call ended, Jeff slipped the phone back into his pocket and returned to the office.

Marvin had already moved on. Another document lay open in front of him.

Jeff poured himself a fresh cup of coffee. ”You actually managed to leave Peter Jackson speechless.”

Marvin’s eyes never left the page. ”It happens.”

A quiet laugh escaped Jeff.

Across the room, Christopher Nolan had watched the entire exchange without saying a word.

He hadn’t heard Peter’s side of the conversation.

He didn’t need to.

One hundred and twenty million dollars had just been committed to a filmmaker with nothing more dramatic than a phone call and a few signatures waiting to be sent.

No committee. No endless negotiations. No executives asking for another week to think.

Just... a decision.

Nolan found himself studying Marvin for another moment.

The confidence didn’t surprise him anymore. He had seen it the first day they met, when Marvin had calmly dismantled every objection to Following without raising his voice once.

No.

What lingered in Nolan’s mind was something else. The ease.

Marvin had just committed hundreds of millions of dollars to a trilogy the rest of Hollywood considered an impossible gamble, then turned the page and started reading something else, as though he’d approved office furniture instead of one of the largest independent film investments in history.

Christopher Nolan sat quietly, the screenplay resting across his lap.

At twenty-eight, Nolan looked exactly the part of a hungry, young British filmmaker. He had one feature to his name—a résumé that barely filled half a page.

He was unknown outside a small circle of independent filmmakers. *Following* had earned admiration from the people who had actually seen it, but that wasn’t a very large group. It had been made on weekends, financed a few thousand dollars at a time, with friends stepping in whenever another pair of hands was needed.

A month ago, if someone had told him he would be sitting in Marvin Meyers’ office discussing future films, he would have laughed.

Then Jeff had called.

Nolan had honestly assumed it was a prank.

Now he was here.

The screenplay lay closed beneath his hand, its pages marked with colored tabs and handwritten notes squeezed into nearly every margin. He and Jonathan had spent several late nights arguing over scenes, rearranging sequences in their heads, and wondering why a fourteen-year-old had seen something in his work that almost nobody else had.

His eyes drifted around the office again.

It didn’t feel like Hollywood.

No framed posters.

No Academy Award that Marvin has won for two consecutive years.

No photographs with famous actors lining the walls.

Everything seemed to exist because someone intended to use it.

It was still quiet, too.

The building felt less like an established studio than a place waiting for people to arrive.

Jeff came back into the room, coffee mug in one hand. ”Peter’s taken care of.”

He looked toward Nolan and smiled. ”Now... ”I believe Mr. Nolan has some thoughts.”

Nolan placed the script on the edge of the desk. ”I do,” he said.

His voice carried the measured precision of a man terrified of ambiguous instructions.

Imprecise words bred imprecise understanding, and imprecise understanding spawned footage you couldn’t fix in the edit.

The boy sitting opposite him was unmistakably fourteen. You could see it in his face whenever he stopped speaking. The youth was still there beneath the composure.

Yet after a few minutes in the room, Christopher had almost stopped noticing his age. Marvin never seemed interested in proving himself.

He never talked over people. Never rushed to fill silence. He answered questions, made decisions, and moved on.

It made the room feel... older.

There was no overcompensation, no forced aggression. Just a still presence.

Christopher rested the screenplay on the desk while sitting in front of Marvin’s desk. ”I keep coming back to the museum.”

Marvin nodded.”The dragon skeleton.”

”Yes.” Christopher leaned forward slightly.

”The museum sequence,” Nolan began. ”I want to start there. You open the picture with a dragon skeleton in a public museum. Not locked in a government vault. Not flanked by guards. A public exhibit with a bronze plaque reading, *The remains of Blackwing, slain 1427*. Schoolchildren walk past it. Nobody blinks.”

He looked up. ”Nobody even looks twice.”

Marvin smiled faintly. ”They’ve seen it before.”

”Exactly.” Christopher returned the smile. ”The audience hasn’t.”

A brief silence settled between them. ”That’s what I like.”

”You trust them.”

”Correct,” Marvin said.

”That is three lines of production design doing the heavy lifting of twenty minutes of dialogue.” Nolan leaned in slightly. ”Most writers can’t resist the urge to justify themselves. They’d force a character to say, ’As you know, dragons terrorized the fourteenth century.’ You don’t. You put the bones in the room and force the audience to adapt.”

”Yes.”

”It’s brilliant and blunt,” Nolan said. ”What I want to know is if it works intentionally, or if your instincts just got lucky and the mechanics went unexamined.”

From his seat slightly behind the firing line, Jeff let out a soft sound that might have been a laugh.

Marvin didn’t blink. ”The mechanism is that audiences process information through context before they filter it through explanation. If the museum is mundane, and the people are mundane, the audience accepts the skeleton as a fact of the world before their skepticism can boot up. Explanation invites doubt. Context bypasses it entirely. The dragon isn’t there to prove dragons are real. It’s there to establish that this society treats its monsters the way we treat the Romans. You get all of that in forty-five seconds without opening a single character’s mouth.”

Nolan held Marvin’s gaze for a long moment. ”Right,” he said softly. ”That is the mechanism.”

”Was there a doubt?”

”No. I just needed to hear you say it.”

Marvin folded his hands. ”If everyone in the scene treats something as ordinary... ...the audience usually accepts it before they have time to question it.”

Christopher nodded. ”Right. Once you’ve accepted the image... ...the explanation becomes optional. The world explains itself.”

”Exactly.” Christopher looked down at the screenplay again before looking back up.

”I wanted to make sure that wasn’t an accident.”

”It wasn’t.”

Another small nod.. ”I didn’t think it was.”

Jeff, who had been listening from the side of the room, smiled into his coffee. ”I’ve noticed something.”

Both of them looked his way. ”You two somehow turned a conversation about a dragon skeleton into a discussion about audience psychology.”

Christopher laughed quietly. ”I suppose we did.”

”So...” Jeff set his cup down. ”...I’m taking that as a good sign of long friendship.”

....

...

..

.

Lunch arrived a little after half past twelve.

Amy set the bags on the table, announced there was more coffee in the pot, and quietly disappeared again before anyone had the chance to thank her.

Nobody suggested taking a break.

The screenplay stayed open.

Production schedules were pushed aside to make room for sandwiches and coffee cups.

Christopher barely noticed what he was eating.

Halfway through lunch, he looked up from the script.

”There’s one thing I’ve been turning over.”

Marvin looked at him.

Christopher tapped a page with one finger. ”You leave an awful lot unanswered.”

”The dragon skeleton.”

Marvin nodded.

”The symbols.”

Another nod.

”The ending.”

Christopher closed the script.

”By the time the credits roll, you’ve introduced dragons, vampires, those symbols, whatever’s following the boy...”

He shrugged.

”...and you explain almost none of it.”

Jeff glanced between them but stayed out of it.

Christopher continued. ”I like mysteries. I just keep asking myself where the line is.”

”When does curiosity become frustration?”

”What if someone walks into the cinema thinking they’re only getting one film?”

”Structurally,” Nolan said, pausing with his coffee. ”You are handing the audience a massive amount of lore over two hours, but you resolve almost none of it. Can an audience sit through a film that creates more questions than it answers and walk away satisfied with consideration of this as a stand alone movie even if there is part two?”

Jeff watched Marvin closely. He wasn’t worried; he just genuinely wanted to hear the answer.

Marvin set his cup down. ”Hollywood has spent three decades training itself to believe that audiences are fundamentally stupid. I think Hollywood worries too much about answering every question.”

Christopher looked at him.

”Not intentionally,” Marvin continued. ”It’s a structural problem. The studio note process selects against ambiguity. Every development meeting is the same: this isn’t clear enough, the audience won’t understand this, repeat this plot point because they might have missed it the first time. And those notes come from people who are not stupid, who are applying logic that makes sense from a purely risk-management perspective. If you have a two-hundred-million-dollar film, you cannot afford the downside of confusing the audience. So you remove the confusion. And then you remove it again. And after thirty years of removing confusion from everything, the industry has arrived at the collective belief that confusion is always a defect.” He paused. ”I don’t believe that.”

”Neither do I,” Christopher said, evenly.

”If something isn’t explained immediately... ...Hollywood assume the audience will reject it.”

”They won’t.”

”They’ll reject being confused.”

”That’s different.”

Christopher leaned back slightly.

”Go on.”

”The question isn’t whether some people will leave this film frustrated. They will. You can’t make a film that trusts the audience without accepting that some portion of the audience will experience that trust as a withdrawal of the support they’ve been conditioned to expect.”

Marvin looked at the window for a moment. The Burbank afternoon was clear and warm. ”The question is whether the people who stay with the film — who do the work, who sit with the questions, who argue about the symbols and the dragon and what Selene saw when she looked at that boy. The mythology questions are the engine. The emotional resolution is the payload. You don’t need to understand how the engine works to feel the car move forward— whether those people have an experience that is worth having. I think they do. I think the questions this film generates are more interesting than most of the answers most films provide.”

A rare, faint smile touched Nolan’s mouth. ”The engine metaphor is good.”

”I know. Save it for the press junkets.”

”The sequel problem,” he said. ”You’re planning seven to nine films in this universe. The first film needs to establish enough to generate investment in the subsequent ones. But if it answers nothing—”

”It answers the central emotional question,” Marvin said. ”Did Marvin and the girl matter to each other? Yes. Does her death cost something? Yes. Is Selene a monster or a person? The film doesn’t answer that — but it’s the right question to leave open, because the answer is what the second film is for.” He paused. ”The mythology questions — You don’t need to understand the engine to feel the car move.”

”If the general audience understands what the characters want... ...and understands what’s happening emotionally... ...they’ll tolerate uncertainty.”

Marvin rested his cup on the desk.

”They don’t need every mystery solved. They just need confidence that the story knows where it’s going.”

Christopher was silent for a few seconds. ”You’re asking them to trust the storyteller.”

”Yes.”

”And if they do... ...they’ll come back for the next Chapter.”

Marvin smiled. ”Exactly.”

Christopher looked down at the screenplay again. ”I’ve been thinking about it the wrong way.”

”How so?”

”I kept treating every unanswered question as a debt.”

He tapped the cover lightly. ”But they aren’t debts. They’re promises.”

For the first time since lunch arrived, Marvin’s smile widened.”Now we’re talking about the same film.”

They spent the next hour dissecting the script like architects over a stress-test blueprint.

They worked through the screenplay scene by scene.

Sometimes they lingered on a single page for ten minutes. Sometimes twenty pages disappeared in less than five.

Christopher stopped near the end of the script. ”Selene.”

Marvin looked up.

”Her entrance.” Christopher rested a finger on the page. ”For the first two hours, the audience is with Helel and Eli. They’re emotionally invested. Then Selene walks in...”

”...and tears the whole thing apart.” He looked across the desk. ”She has to do that.”

Marvin nodded.

”But if this becomes a series...” Christopher tapped the script once. ”...you eventually need the audience to follow her.”

”That’s the difficult part.”

”They don’t have to like her.”

”They probably shouldn’t.”

”For that to work — for the audience to eventually accept Selene as a protagonist in future films — the film needs to make her comprehensible without making her sympathetic. The distinction matters. Comprehensible means we understand why she does what she does. Sympathetic means we want her to do it. We don’t want her to do it. But we need to understand it.”
