But out here, on the sidewalk of Fifth Avenue, New York exhaled its particular perfume: exhaust fumes and pretzel carts, autumn leaves and distant rain, the electric promise that anything could happen to anyone at any moment.

Amy Adams stepped through the doors first, her hand still clutching the leather portfolio she’d carried through more than seven hours of meetings that had felt closer to seventy. Her feet ached in the new heels—Italian, expensive, a gift from Marvin that she’d protested and then secretly adored—and the June wind cut through her dress, snapping her awake after the stupor of corporate endurance.

”Easy there.” Marvin’s hand found the small of her back, steadying her as she wobbled slightly on the uneven pavement. His touch was warm, proprietary in a way that had become familiar over years of working together, though she still felt a flutter when he touched her like that in public.

”I’m fine,” she said, but she leaned into his hand anyway, letting him guide her toward the black car idling at the curb. ”Just... forgot how to walk like a human for a second there.”

Gordon was already out of the driver’s seat, holding the rear door open with the impassive efficiency of a man who had seen everything twice and found it boring both times. ”Miss Adams,” he nodded, his gravel voice somehow gentle.

”Gordon.” She slid into the backseat, sinking into the leather with a groan that was entirely unprofessional and entirely necessary. The door closed behind Marvin with a solid, expensive thud, sealing them in that rarefied quiet that smelled of Marvin’s cologne—sandalwood and something darker, like old books and ozone.

She turned to him, opening her mouth to ask about the flight time, to confirm the car would take them straight to JFK, to fill the silence with the practicalities that had defined their relationship for so long. But Marvin spoke first.

”Forget about the business,” he said, doning his shades. They shaped the light around him, subtly bending attention away from his eyes. Amy had long since stopped trying to understand how half of his impossible thoughts.

”How are you holding up? Legs cramped? Back aching? Whoever designed those boardroom chairs clearly hated the human spine.”

Amy blinked before a laugh escaped her, bright enough to fill the quiet car. ”Shouldn’t I be asking you that?” she teased. ”You’re the little one here, remember?”

The jab came as effortlessly as breathing now, another thread woven into the easy rhythm they’d built over months of late-night conversations, endless cups of coffee, and quiet moments stolen all the time.

Marvin looked up at her, and the corner of his mouth curled into a smile.

It wasn’t the composed, unreadable smile the boardroom knew. Nor the polite one reserved for cameras.

This one belonged only to the people who had somehow found their way past the walls he kept around himself.

For a fleeting moment, the frighteningly brilliant strategist disappeared, replaced by an ordinary thirteen-year-old boy amused by a friend’s teasing.

Amy found herself smiling back without even realizing it.

Somehow, those rare, unguarded smiles always made the impossible feel wonderfully ordinary.

”Fair enough,” he chuckled, adjusting his glasses.

He settled back against the leather seat. ”I did warn you.”

He counted them off on his fingers. ”Three hours discussing global distribution networks. Another hour on publishing acquisitions. Forty-five minutes debating whether we should build recording studios or buy them. Then came the conversation about creating genre-specific labels, artist development, international logistics, and preparing for an Internet nobody else believes is about to change the industry.”

He gave her a sideways glance.

”And somewhere in the middle of all that, I spent twenty minutes explaining why a piece of software called Napster is going to terrify every record executive in America.”

His grin widened. ”I distinctly remember telling you it’d be the least exciting masterclass in the history of music.”

Amy folded her arms with exaggerated indignation. ”And I distinctly remember saying I wanted to understand how empires are built.”

”You did.”

”And?”

Marvin laughed softly. ”You survived.”

”Only because the coffee was excellent.”

”And because,” Marvin added, ”you’re one of perhaps five people on Earth who voluntarily sat through seven hours of executives discussing corporate infrastructure without trying to escape through the nearest window.”

Amy couldn’t help smiling.

”Worth it?” He looked out the window for a moment, watching Los Angeles drift past.

”Ask me that in ten years.”

The confidence with which he said it made it sound less like a prediction... ...and more like a promise.

”Anyway I was being ambitious,” Amy protested, but she was smiling now, the tension draining from her shoulders as the car merged into traffic. ”And I did learn. I learned that lawyers can make anything boring, even money.”

From the front seat, Gordon made a sound that might have been a chuckle—rare as a solar eclipse, and just as precious.

Marvin laughed softly, letting his head rest against the leather seat as the car pulled away from the building.

Amy had spent enough time around him to recognize the difference.

His body wasn’t tired.

She’d never seen him get worn out.

There was no heaviness in his movements, no stiffness in his shoulders, no sluggishness that came from a long day. He looked exactly as composed as he had when he’d walked into the boardroom seven hours earlier.

But there was another kind of exhaustion that even someone like Marvin couldn’t entirely conceal.

It lingered in the quiet moments between conversations... in the brief seconds when his expression relaxed and the relentless calculations behind his eyes finally slowed.

For the better part of an entire day, he’d directed discussions spanning continents, industries, acquisitions, publishing rights, digital infrastructure, corporate architecture, and a future no one else in that room could yet imagine.

Carrying the weight of an empire wasn’t physically demanding.

It was mentally relentless.

And for a few precious minutes, with the city gliding past beyond the tinted windows and no boardroom left to convince, Marvin allowed himself to simply... think of nothing at all.

”Ambition is good,” he said, turning his head to look at her. His eyes were blue—unsettlingly so, like something cosmic had leaked into his DNA. ”But so is sustenance. Are you hungry?”

Amy opened her mouth to give the answer—the flight was waiting, the plane was fueled, they had a schedule to keep. But her stomach growled, loud and indignant, answering for her.

”That would be a yes,” Marvin said, his smile turning wicked.

”But the flight—” Amy started.

”Can wait.”

”Plane food—”

”Is an abomination against everything decent and good,” Marvin finished. He leaned forward, tapping Gordon’s shoulder. ”Change of plans, Gordon. We’re having dinner in the city.”

Gordon’s eyes met Marvin’s in the rearview mirror, some silent communication passing between them—two men who had been through enough together to speak without words. ”Anywhere in particular, Marvin?”

Marvin looked at Amy, and she felt the weight of that gaze like a physical touch. ”Somewhere quiet. Somewhere we can breathe.”

”There’s a place,” Gordon said, already signaling, guiding the car toward the West Village. ”Little Italian joint. Family owned. No paparazzi, no tourists. Real food.”

”Perfect,” Marvin said, and settled back, his hand finding hers on the seat between them.

Amy stared at their joined fingers—his small and strong, hers pale and slightly trembling. She should pull away. She should remember that she was his age, that she was twenty-four and struggling and couldn’t afford complications, that the world would tear her apart if it knew what she felt. But instead, she laced her fingers through his and squeezed.

They didn’t talk about work. That was the rule, unspoken but ironclad, whenever they stole these moments. Instead, Marvin asked about her classes—the acting workshops he’d forced her into, the camera technique seminars she’d resisted with every fiber of her being until he’d simply enrolled her and refused to accept her gratitude.

”How’s the camera work going?” he asked, his thumb tracing circles on her palm. ”Still fighting the lens?”

Amy sighed, but it wasn’t entirely unhappy. ”I’m getting the hang of it. Finally. That thing you said about not looking directly into the camera—like it’s the sun, not the destination? That clicked for me last week. Mr. Kaminsky had me do this exercise where I had to react to something off-screen while keeping my eyeline soft, and I actually... felt it. This shift. Like I wasn’t performing anymore, I was just... existing.”

”That’s the magic,” Marvin said softly. ”Theater is about reaching the back row. Film is about letting someone see your soul through a keyhole. It’s terrifying.”

”It’s *hard*,” Amy admitted, turning to face him fully. The streetlights painted moving shadows across his face as they drove downtown. ”I thought I knew acting. I’ve been doing theater since I was twelve. But this? This is like learning to walk again. Everything I thought was ’big’ enough for stage is ’too big’ for camera. I feel like I’m shrinking myself, but somehow becoming more... honest? Does that make sense?”

”It makes perfect sense,” Marvin said. He reached up, adjusting his glasses again, and Amy felt the subtle shift in the air—the way the city outside seemed to blur slightly, as if the windows had frosted over with intention. His aura, was subtle, but she felt it now—the car becoming a pocket universe, just for them.

”That’s why I wanted you to do the workshop before we start filming. The part I wrote for you—it’s small, but it’s precise. It requires that honesty. The camera will love you, Amy. But you have to learn to let it.”

She felt her throat tighten at his faith in her—the absolute certainty he carried that she was capable of things she herself doubted. ”You didn’t give me a choice, you know. About the classes. You just... signed me up and paid for everything.”

”Would you have done it if I’d asked nicely?”

”No,” she admitted. ”I would have made excuses. Money, time, pride.”

”Then I made the right call.” He squeezed her hand. ”Besides, you’re going to be a star. I’m just getting in on the ground floor.”

”Marvin—”

”I’m serious.” He turned to her, and without his glasses, without the barrier of glass between them, his eyes were just as devastating as first time she looked into them. ”I’ve seen a thousand actors. I know what the camera wants. And it wants you.”

They arrived at the restaurant—a narrow storefront on a tree-lined street in the Village, the kind of place that had no website, no ambition beyond making the best osso buco in Manhattan. The sign above the door read simply ”Gianni’s” in faded gold paint.

Gordon opened the door for them, and Amy stepped out into the cool evening, her hand still in Marvin’s. The street was quiet, residential, the brownstones glowing with warm light. Somewhere, a jazz record was playing through an open window.

”Table for two,” Marvin told the maître d’, a severe-looking woman who softened immediately at the sight of him—though whether that was natural charm or his particular gift, Amy couldn’t tell. ”Something private, if you have it.”

”Of course.” The woman didn’t ask for a name, didn’t blink at the glasses or the slight figure who commanded more presence than men twice his size. ”Here it is corner. No one will disturb you.”

They were led through the restaurant—small, intimate, red-checked tablecloths and candles in wax-dripped Chianti bottles—to a corner booth that felt like a secret. The walls were covered in black-and-white photos of old New York, of Sinatra and Streisand and ghosts of glamour past.

Amy slid into the booth, Marvin opposite her, and for a moment they just looked at each other across the candlelight.

”This is nice,” she said quietly.

”It is,” he agreed. ”You look beautiful, by the way. In case I forgot to mention it during the seven hours of contract negotiations.”

She laughed, feeling the heat rise to her cheeks. ”I look like I sat in a boardroom for seven hours.”

”You look like you belong there. Like you built the boardroom.” He reached across the table, taking her hand again. He did that often in quite moments now—found reasons to touch her, as if reassuring her he was real. ”I’m proud of you, Amy. The way you handled yourself today. You didn’t say much, but you *watched*. You learned. That’s rare.”

”I was terrified,” she admitted. ”Those men—they’re sharks. I kept thinking they’d smell blood, that they’d know I don’t belong.”

”You belong wherever you decide to belong,” Marvin said firmly. ”That’s the only rule. Everything else is just furniture.”
