Look at him now. I’m so damn proud.’

He remembered teaching Marvin to shoot his first bow at age six, patiently guiding his small hands, marveling at his son’s natural focus. He remembered the camping trips, the late-night conversations about honor and responsibility, the way Marvin had always looked at him with those wide, adoring eyes that seemed to say *I want to be just like you, Dad.*

The moment of quiet reverence was broken by the sharp ring of Grant’s cell phone. He glanced at the caller ID and straightened his posture instinctively, a smile touching his lips.

”It’s Dad,” Grant said, though Linda was already mid-dial and barely heard him over her own panic.

He answered, and before he could even offer a polite hello, the gravelly, booming voice of Irving Meyers erupted through the speaker. Even at seventy seven years old, the patriarch of the family had a voice that sounded like shifting tectonic plates—powerful, immovable, and capable of reshaping landscapes.

”That’s Marvin, right?” the old man barked. There were no pleasantries, just raw adrenaline and pride so thick you could taste it. ”That is my grandson Marvin on the front page of the world news section, right?”

”Yes. Yes, that is your grandson, Dad,” Grant said, leaning back in his chair, a deep chuckle escaping him. ”Your grandson, the leopard hunter.”

”Hell yes!” Irving roared, and Grant could practically hear the old man slamming a fist onto his desk in triumph, likely in his penthouse office overlooking Manhattan. ”When the boy asked to borrow the New Zealand station, I thought he was going down there to clear his head, maybe write another one of those fantasy books he loves so much. I never thought he was going to go full Hemingway and hunt man-eaters!”

”Dad, it was a coincidence,” Grant interjected, trying to play the voice of reason for Linda’s sake, who was now hovering over his shoulder, listening in while her own call to Marvin went straight to a New Zealand voicemail. Her face was etched with worry, but she couldn’t help leaning into her husband’s warmth, seeking comfort. ”The animals escaped from a zoo. Marvin was just... in the right place at the right time. He was on vacation!”

”Yeah, yeah, whatever he was over there for!” Irving brushed the logic aside with the impatience of a man who had built a billion-dollar empire from millions through sheer force of will. ”I just hope the lad is fine. Is he scratched? Does he have all his fingers? You tell me the truth now, Grant. Is my boy whole?”

The question carried decades of love beneath its gruff exterior. Irving had never been good at soft words, but Grant heard what he was really asking: *Is the child I love, the future of our family, safe?*

”He’s perfect, Dad. Not a mark on him. Gordon called it in personally. Our boy is safe and whole.”

”Good. Fine. Okay, I’m hanging up. I’ve got a lunch meeting at the country club in an hour and I’m taking the paper with me. I can’t wait to show this off to those old fossils! They’re always bragging about their soft grandsons getting into Harvard. My grandson saves movie directors from apex predators!”

The old man’s laughter was infectious, a booming sound that filled the kitchen and made Linda smile despite her worry. Irving wasn’t a man of soft ”I love yous.” He had been raised by a harsh father who arrived in America with nothing but a chip on his shoulder and a hunger for more—a man who taught Irving that outward affection was a weakness in business, that love was shown through provision and protection, not words.

Irving had passed some of that coldness down to Grant during his childhood, their relationship marked by distance and expectation. But with Marvin, the generational cycle of emotional restraint had broken wide open. Irving had been the first to hold Marvin in the hospital, had been the one to rock him when Linda needed rest, had been the one to sneak him cookies and tell him stories about the old country.

In Marvin’s mind and his sudden bursts of dominance, Irving saw the ghost of his own father—the man who had started the Meyers fortune with nothing but grit, calloused hands, and a refusal to back down from any fight. He saw the continuation of a legacy that stretched back generations, a bloodline of strength and determination.

”Hahahaha! Two ferocious man-eating leopards with a bow and arrow! That’s a Meyers for you!” Irving’s voice faded as he moved the phone away from his mouth, still laughing with pure, unadulterated joy. ”Tell Linda not to worry too much. The boy has his father’s strength and his mother’s heart. He’ll be home soon, and when he is, I’m flying out to see him. First class. I don’t care what my doctor says about my blood pressure.”

Grant stared at the dead receiver, shaking his head with fond exasperation. ’What the hell,’ he thought silently. ’They were zoo leopards. They’ve probably never even seen a live goat in their lives, let alone eaten a human.’

But he didn’t dare say that out loud. Not to Irving, who needed this victory, this proof that his lineage was strong. And certainly not to Linda, who had finally given up on her phone and slumped into the chair beside him, her body seeking his comfort automatically, instinctively.

Her face was a mask of maternal exhaustion, but there was something else burning beneath it—something warm and alive that made Grant’s breath hitch.

”He’s okay, Linda,” Grant said softly, his voice dropping to that intimate register reserved only for her. He reached out and covered her trembling hand with his own, then slid his fingers up her arm in a gentle caress that had become second nature over fifteen years of marriage. ”He’s more than okay. He’s a Meyers and a Harth. It’s in the blood. The same blood that flows through you, through me, through him. He’s our son, Lou. We made him. We raised him. And look at what he’s become.”

Linda looked at the photo one more time—at the striking, focused face of her son, the man he had growing into—and let out a long, shaky breath. The image stirred something deep within her, a recognition of her own creation.

She remembered carrying him, feeling him kick and turn inside her, the miracle of his existence. She remembered the agony and ecstasy of bringing him into the world, the first time she held him, the overwhelming flood of love that had redefined her entire existence.

And now he was a man. A strong, capable, breathtaking boy who had faced death and emerged victorious.

”He is going to be the death of me, Grant,” she whispered, her voice trembling with emotion. ”But God... he looks magnificent in this pose, doesn’t he? Look at him. Look at what we created.”

Her voice dropped to a whisper, thick with feeling. ”I gave birth to that little man. I held him when he was nothing but tiny fists and cries. And now... now he’s this. He’s everything.”

Something shifted in the air between them, charged and electric. It wasn’t lust for her son—it was the profound, overwhelming arousal of a creator beholding her masterpiece, of a mother seeing the culmination of every sacrifice, every sleepless night, every worry and prayer made flesh in the form of a magnificent boy. It was pride made physical. It was love so intense it demanded expression.

Grant nodded, but his eyes weren’t on the paper anymore. They were on his wife—his beautiful, passionate, extraordinary wife who had given him this gift, this family, this life. He saw the flush in her cheeks, the dilation of her pupils, the way her breath had quickened. He understood exactly what she was feeling because he felt it too—the overwhelming need to celebrate life, to affirm their bond, to lose themselves in the love that had created this family.

He wrapped his arms around her waist and pulled her close, his hands sliding possessively over her hips with the familiarity of decades, squeezing the soft flesh through her robe with reverent hunger.

”He does, Lou. He really does,” Grant murmured, leaning in and kissing her with a passion that had never dimmed, not through raising children, not through building an empire, not through the trials of fifteen years. The kiss deepened, his tongue slipping into her mouth as he tasted the lingering stress and unexpected, fierce heat on her lips.

Linda moaned softly into the kiss, her body responding as it always did to her husband’s touch, as if they were still the young lovers who had stolen moments in library stacks and back seats. When they finally broke apart, she was breathing heavier, cheeks flushed, her eyes dark with desire. ”Grant... not now,” she whispered, even as her thighs pressed together and her nipples hardened against the thin silk of her robe, betraying her words completely. ”We have our jobs and your board meeting...”

Grant smirked, easily reading the clear hunger in her eyes—the same hunger he felt burning in his own chest. He stood up and, without warning, scooped her up in his arms in one smooth motion, just as he had on their wedding night, just as he had countless times since.

Linda let out a surprised gasp as he lifted her like she weighed nothing, her arms instinctively wrapping around his neck, her body molding to his as if they were two halves of a whole.

”Grant, wait—” she protested weakly, but her voice was already breathy and needy, her love for him shining in her eyes alongside her desire. Her legs wrapped around his waist as he started walking toward the master bedroom, his hands gripping her firmly, fingers digging into her soft curves with every step, claiming her as he had claimed her a thousand times before and would a thousand times again.

”We’re not going to either,” Grant replied, his voice low and rough with desire and lust. ”The Meyers couple had to fly out to see their distressed son. We’ve got the whole day free... and tonight. And I intend to spend every moment reminding you how much I love you, how proud I am of the family we’ve built, and how desperately I need you.”

Linda bit her lip, trying to look reluctant even as her hips rolled subtly against him, seeking the friction she craved. ”But the classes... the board...”

”Fuck the board meeting,” Grant growled, kicking the bedroom door open with a reverence that belied his rough words. ”Right now, the only board I care about is bending you over ours, and reminding you that you are the heart of this family. You are the reason we have anything worth protecting.”

He carried her inside, kicking the door shut behind them with a solid thud. The latch clicked firmly into place, sealing them inside as Linda’s half-hearted protests melted into a needy moan against his mouth.

”Grant,” she breathed between kisses, her fingers tangling in his hair, pulling him closer. ”I love you. I love our son. I love what we’ve made together.”

”I love you, Lou,” he whispered back, laying her gently on the silk sheets, covering her body with his own. ”Every day. Every year. More than the last.”

And as the California sun climbed higher in the sky, bathing their estate in golden light, the Meyers patriarch and matriarch lost themselves in each other—celebrating life, love, family, and the beautiful, terrifying, magnificent reality of watching their child become a man.

The atmosphere at the elite Los Angeles private school, The Buckley School had shifted from academic boredom to electric hysteria. The hallways weren’t just buzzing; they were vibrating with a kinetic energy that seemed to make the very walls tremble. It was 1999, and the world was still innocent enough to be shocked by genuine heroism, still romantic enough to recognize primitive power when it saw it.

Dorothy burst through the doors of the honors lounge, her lungs burning, clutching a crumpled copy of the *New York Post* as if it were a holy relic. Sunlight streamed through the Palladian windows, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air like tiny witnesses to history. She didn’t even wait to reach the table where Lindsay was sitting.

”Lindsay! Lindsay, did you see the news? Tell me you saw it!” Dorothy gasped, waving the paper so frantically the pages rattled like dry leaves.

Lindsay looked up from her Discman, her face flushed a deep, rosy pink that had nothing to do with the heat. She was staring at her Nokia phone, the tiny monochrome screen displaying the photo that had been texted to her by Amy.
