Michael gave a slow, almost reluctant smile. ”Damn kid.”

Every few months he seemed to add another valuable piece of intellectual property to his library.

No announcements. No press conferences.

No publicity.

He simply registered the work, locked it away, and carried on as though he had all the time in the world.

For a 13-year-old, it was an unnervingly disciplined way to build a studio.

Michael said nothing.

The room waited.

His fingers, which had been tapping the table moments earlier, came to a complete stop.

Another refusal. Most people eventually said yes to Disney. Sometimes it took more money. Sometimes it took a better contract. Sometimes it simply took patience.

Marvin, however, seemed almost immune to all three. That irritated Michael more than he cared to admit.

Disney had taken the chance on him when he was still an unknown child. They had put real money behind him, trusted him with a major family picture, and watched him become one of the most valuable young stars in the world.

Now every conversation seemed to end the same way. A polite smile. A sincere thank you. And another ”no.” Michael had never enjoyed hearing that word.

The 57-year-old Eisner was widely known across the industry as an arrogant, brilliant individualist who despised others going against his corporate decisions.

Looking back at his long, historic tenure at Disney, Eisner had undeniably achieved great, empire-building results. But he had also made some highly questionable, ego-driven decisions, often based entirely on his own personal preferences rather than market data.

For example, he had strongly pushed for Disney to produce live-action musicals that bombed, and even stubbornly advocated for changing the original design of the main character in an upcoming animated film from a girl to a boy, just because he preferred it.

It had helped transform Disney into an entertainment powerhouse, but it had also earned him a reputation for being stubborn. Very few people inside the company were comfortable telling him he was wrong.

Before 1994, he had his brilliant, stabilizing old partner, Frank Wells, to act as a buffer. Wells would calm tensions with furious board members and soothe abused subordinates.

However, after Frank Wells tragically died in a helicopter crash in 1994, Eisner became visibly more arbitrary, paranoid, and ruthless. This caused massive, quiet dissatisfaction among many veteran executives at Disney.

Ever since Frank’s death, those voices had become increasingly rare.

Michael was well aware of it.

He simply didn’t dwell on it.

This paranoia led him to cultivate loyalists—like Reed McCas and his godnephew, Robert Eisner—to protect his position and enforce his influence within the company. But this heavy-handed tactic only fueled further disdain from the other independent directors on the board, creating a vicious cycle of corporate mistrust.

Yet, despite his arrogance, Michael was a survivor. He knew exactly how to show restraint when dealing with individuals who held actual power.

His attention returned to the present.

Marvin wasn’t an executive.

He wasn’t a division head.

He wasn’t someone Michael could summon into an office and pressure until they reached an agreement.

Although he was deeply dissatisfied with Marvin’s rejection, he suppressed his frustration. He couldn’t afford to target Marvin over a trivial matter like a comedy sequel.

Marvin wasn’t just some replaceable child actor holding an Oscar—there were plenty of flash-in-the-pan Oscar winners in this town.

He was something much more troublesome. Independent. Financially untouchable. And, infuriatingly, successful.

Every project the boy touched seemed to turn into money. Films. Music. Publishing.

It didn’t seem to matter.

Marvin was a generational creator who hadn’t seen a single failure in any field he put his hands on. His Midas touch was terrifying.

Hollywood was full of Academy Award winners who disappeared after a single hit.

Marvin wasn’t following that pattern.

If anything, each success only made the next one bigger.

Eisner remembered perfectly well the cautionary tale from another subsidiary in Disney: the executive group that had initially rejected Marvin’s script for *The Sixth Sense* had been unceremoniously fired by him after the movie crossed four hundred million dollars worldwide in just its first month.

The executives who had dismissed the screenplay in the ’the Six Majors’ hadn’t simply been proven wrong.

They had become examples.

No one in Hollywood wanted to be remembered as the person who passed on the next phenomenon.

He wasn’t about to make the same mistake.

His fingers resumed their slow rhythm against the polished table.

Eisner was not going to be the man who alienated the golden goose. ”Keep in constant touch with Marvin,” Michael ordered, looking at Robert. ”This kid is a walking gold mine. Stay close to him,” Michael said quietly.

Robert looked up.

”I don’t mean every few months.”

”I mean all the time.”

”If he calls, we answer.”

”If he wants a meeting, we make room.”

”If he needs something, we find out whether we can help.”

Robert nodded. ”I understand.”

Michael’s gaze drifted toward the Harry Potter file lying farther down the table. ”And keep an eye on Warner.”

A few executives straightened. ”If there’s any opportunity to secure additional film or television rights before they lock down the rest of that series... If possible, let’s try our best to secure the film and television adaptation rights to the rest of the *Harry Potter* series.”

He let the sentence hang. ”...I want to know about it immediately.”

”Yes, Michael.”

Silence settled over the room again.

Then another thought occurred to him.

”What about the vampire picture?”

Robert looked puzzled.

”What about it?”

”It’s his first film under his own banner.” Michael leaned back, his expression turning thoughtful.

”Every studio remembers its first independent production.”

”They’re usually small.”

”They’re usually personal.”

”And sometimes...”

He smiled faintly. ”...they’re the beginning of something much bigger.”

Carter caught on first. ”You’re thinking about distribution.”

Michael nodded. ”Exactly.”

”If he’s producing it himself, there’s no harm in asking whether he’d consider a distribution partner.”

Robert considered it for a moment. ”You think he’d go for that?”

”I think he’d listen.” Michael folded his hands. ”We’re not asking to finance the picture. We’re not asking for creative control. We’re offering something he doesn’t have yet.”

”The Disney distribution machine.” He glanced around the table. ”If he says no...”

A small shrug. ”...he says no.”

”But if he says yes...”

No one needed him to finish the sentence.

Getting Disney’s marketing and distribution behind the first film from Marvin’s young studio could be the beginning of a relationship that lasted decades.

And in Hollywood...

Those relationships were often worth more than a single hit.

A brief silence settled over the room.

Then Carter broke it.

”A European style vampire picture?” He looked from Michael to Robert. ”And you want Disney distributing it?”

”A Touchstone release,” Michael corrected without missing a beat. ”Not Disney.”

That eased a few expressions around the table.

Touchstone had existed precisely to give the company room to release films that didn’t fit the Disney family label.

Still...

Robert frowned. ”From what Harvey described, it doesn’t exactly sound commercial.”

”No,” Michael admitted. ”It doesn’t.”

”It’s not *Blade*. It’s not some action franchise with leather coats and explosions. It’s a quiet European story about lonely kids.”

”And a vampire,” someone added.

”And a vampire,” Michael echoed. He tapped the folder once. ”Which is exactly why everyone else is going to hesitate.”

The room understood immediately. Hollywood loved certainty. Original films made executives nervous.

Foreign settings made them more nervous. Child protagonists in a bleak vampire drama?

That combination would scare away half the town before they’d even read the first page.

Michael looked toward Robert. ”Call his attorneys.”

Robert picked up his pen. ”And say what?”

”Tell them we’re interested in domestic distribution. If they’ll give us worldwide, even better.”

A few heads turned.

Michael continued. ”Offer a meaningful release.”

”What kind of release?” Carter asked.

”If we like the picture...” Michael thought for a moment. ”...I’d be comfortable talking about fifteen hundred screens.”

Robert stared at him. ”Fifteen hundred?”

”To start. And if audience testing is exceptional, we expand. And you put in writing that it goes up to a massive 2,500 screens if our test audiences like the final product.”

The room fell silent.

Robert carefully set his pen back on the table. ”Michael...” He waited until he had his uncle’s attention. ”...we haven’t read a single page.”

”No.”

”We haven’t seen an official budget.”

”No.”

”We don’t know who’s directing.”

”No.”

”We don’t know who’s starring.”

Michael simply waited.

Robert spread his hands.

”Then how do we justify discussing a nationwide release? A commitment like that carries a marketing campaign worth tens of millions of dollars.”

The entire board meeting went dead silent. The directors looked at Eisner with sharp, incredulous eyes.

”Promising a guaranteed 1,500 cinema rollout—which requires a massive, multi-million dollar P&A marketing commitment—without even looking at the material sounds... frankly, it sounds suicidal. If the film is a self-indulgent, unmarketable mess, we are on the hook for millions in empty theater screens.”

Michael leaned back in his chair, a cold smile spreading across his face. He looked at his nephew as if explaining basic math to a child.

”It is.”

”If the movie doesn’t work...” He didn’t finish the sentence.

He didn’t need to.

Everyone in the room understood what a failed wide release looked like.

Empty auditoriums. Millions in advertising. Theaters demanding replacement prints within a week.

Michael leaned back. For several seconds, he said nothing. When he finally spoke, his voice was calm. ”You’re looking at the picture.”

”I am.”

”I’m looking at the relationship.”

That drew the room’s attention.

”Suppose the film underperforms. Even if the movie is an absolute, unmitigated flop—even if it’s a terrible, bloody mess that loses us ten million dollars in marketing.”

He shrugged. ”It happens.”

”Now suppose Marvin’s next screenplay becomes another phenomenon.”

No one interrupted.

Michael folded his hands. ”Which studio do you think he’ll remember? The one that laughed at his strangest project... ...or the one willing to bet on him before anyone else? We show Marvin that Disney is his truest, most supportive partner. We buy his loyalty with our risk. When it comes time for him to sell the *Harry Potter* rights, or his next massive tentpole script, he will remember who stood by him on his weird little vampire project. ”

Robert considered that.

Michael continued. ”I’m not proposing we write a blank check. I’m proposing we be the first studio willing to have a serious conversation. If the script is terrible, we walk away. If the numbers don’t work, we walk away.”

”But if it’s good...” A faint smile crossed his face. ”...I don’t want another studio building that relationship while we’re standing on the sidelines.”

The room was quiet again.

This time, not because anyone thought the idea reckless.

Because they understood it.

Michael wasn’t chasing a low-budget vampire film.

He was investing in a filmmaker who, at fifteen, had already built a career most veterans would envy.

The picture itself might make money.

It might not.

The relationship...

That could be worth hundreds of millions over the next five years.

The board members exchanged glances. It was a massive gamble of corporate capital, but the underlying psychology was undeniably brilliant. His vision for leverage was indeed sharp.

Burbank.

Warner Bros. Studios.

The afternoon sun spilled through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the executive conference room, casting long rectangles of light across polished walnut and stacks of financial reports. One wall overlooked the studio lot, where production trucks crawled between soundstages and golf carts ferried assistants from meeting to meeting.

Inside, however, nobody was paying attention to the view.

At the head of the table, Alan Horn closed the folder in front of him. He wasn’t a man who enjoyed theatrics. He preferred facts, numbers, and patience.

But every now and then, an opportunity appeared that demanded urgency.

”Let’s get straight to it,” Alan said.

The quiet conversations around the room died instantly.

”Marvin Meyers.”

A few executives exchanged knowing looks. Alan folded his hands.

”Right now, he’s the most valuable young creator in this industry.”

Nobody argued. Two films had generated well over a billion dollars worldwide. His music continued to sell. His books were becoming publishing events instead of simple releases.

And every major studio in Hollywood was watching his next move.

”The important part,” Alan continued, ”is that he still isn’t tied to anyone. No overall deal. No first-look agreement. No long-term production partnership. He owns his own company.”

”Which means,” said the head of Business Affairs, ”everyone still has a shot.”
