In five years, the first whisper of time’s betrayal. In ten, the industry would begin looking past her. But now? Now she was incandescent.

Marvin studied one image until the screen saver threatened to activate.

She had the face that launched ships. The face that started wars. The face that could make a thirteen-year-old boy ruin his life, and an entire town lose its soul.

He closed the browser. The room seemed darker without the monitor’s glow.

”Good,” he whispered. ”There may still be time.”

He crossed to the storage shelves built around the way he worked.

Three large archival boxes sat neatly stacked beside the drafting table, each filled with pristine storyboard sheets. Nearby were separate stacks of screenplay paper, comic boards, manga manuscript pages, sketch paper, and heavy illustration stock for cover designs, all prepared to the specifications he preferred.

The room itself had been organized to remove every unnecessary distraction. Finished pages went into labeled trays, where Amy or Gordon made sure they were copied, filed, and stored in archival binders before the originals were returned to their proper shelves.

Marvin only had to create.

He pulled out a fresh stack of storyboard sheets and screenplay paper, squared the edges against the drafting table, and reached for his mechanical pencil.

Another story was already waiting in the back of his mind to be recycled. All he had to do was put it on paper.

He wrote the title at the top of the first page. The letters formed with decisive strokes.

*Malèna.*

And then it came—not as words, but as vision.

The projector in his mind flickered to life.

A window. Afternoon light the color of warm honey, cutting through dust motes to illuminate a woman in profile. She stands unguarded, lost in private thought, her silhouette traced by the sun in a way that emphasizes not her sexuality but her profound, aching solitude. The beauty is almost violent in its intensity—enough to inspire worship, enough to inspire destruction.

The light traced the graceful curve of her silhouette, leaving the rest of the room in muted shadow. She seemed completely unguarded, lost in her own thoughts, unaware of the world around her.

The camera lingered not to sensationalize her vulnerability, but to emphasize her humanity—the quiet contrast between extraordinary beauty and profound loneliness. Gentle hands entered the frame, resting against her waist with unmistakable tenderness, turning the moment into one of intimacy and trust rather than desire.

Not his hands, in the vision. The boy’s hands. Resting against her waist with a tenderness that makes Marvin’s jaw tighten.

He freezes the image.

The boy was never the point. The husband was a ghost before he died, a shadow, a necessary absence that created the space for the story to exist. But those hands—any hands—on that waist...

Marvin’s pencil snapped.

He replaced it automatically, his breathing unchanged, but something beastly stirred in his chest. The part of him that wasn’t Marvin Meyers, wasn’t the prodigy, wasn’t the studio head or the actor or the boy. The part that remembered the Abyss. The part that understood possession not as metaphor but as imperative.

This film had never been part of his immediate plans.

It hadn’t climbed onto one of his countless production schedules or found a place among the projects he intended to make over the next few years.

It was simply... appeared.

The moment Monica drifted into his thoughts, another image followed without invitation. Then another. Within minutes, an entire film was unfolding in his mind, scene after scene arriving with such clarity that it felt less like remembering and more like watching.

Under normal circumstances, he would have dismissed it.

There were far more important projects waiting for his attention.

On paper, it was exactly the sort of film he would postpone indefinitely—a quiet, melancholic character piece with little commercial appeal. The kind critics adored, film festivals celebrated, and accountants politely pretended not to notice. It would earn admiration far more readily than it earned money. It certainly wasn’t suitable for his current frame.

But the moment her face flashed in his mind, the script resurrected itself. And right behind the image of her face came this exact scene that would define the movie. The intimacy. The physical closeness.

Suddenly, the idea of staying behind the camera was entirely off the table. He couldn’t let it go.

Originally, he had absolutely no intention of casting himself. The role of Renato required a very specific, pathetic physicality. The character was supposed to be a scrawny, undeveloped kid trapped in the awkward space between childhood innocence and sexual awakening.

Marvin’s current vessel was the exact opposite.

Even when he actively suppressed it, his Incubus biology had forced his physical development to the absolute peak of adolescence. He possessed broad shoulders, a height that defied his legal age, and a vocal register that had already settled into a smooth, hypnotic baritone. He looked sixteen going on twenty. He looked like a predator.

He was far too old, too sharp, and much too dangerous to play the naive, helpless observer.

But his physiology wasn’t human. He possessed cellular control over his own flesh, bone density, and hormones. Layered over that was his aura manipulation—the supernatural ability to project any psychological presence he desired.

Making himself appear smaller, younger, and entirely harmless was just a matter of precise, internal engineering; with acting, it would be so easy.

He could compress the width of his shoulders. He could soften the sharp, masculine angles of his jawline. He could constrict his vocal cords to pitch his voice back into the cracking, uncertain squeak of a boy who hadn’t yet survived puberty.

He could dial back the suffocating weight of his aura until he felt like nothing more than an invisible, lovestruck kid. He could make the camera, the crew, and the audience believe the lie.

It was a massive, unnecessary exertion of his physical and magical reserves for a low-budget art project, but logic no longer mattered.

The alternative was standing behind the director’s monitor and watching another actor touch her. Even if it was just staged intimacy. Even if it was under the clinical, sterile lights of a movie set. The mere thought of another boy’s hands resting on her skin, getting to hold her the way the script demanded, made something cold, dark, and violently territorial shift behind his eyes.

”No,” he said aloud. The word fell into the room like a stone into deep water.

He would play Renato. He would be the one to stand in that Sicilian square, watching her pass. The one to steal her clothing, to touch himself in the dark with her image burning behind his eyelids, to weep for her when the town tore her apart. He would be the vessel for that obsession, that sacred, profane devotion.

The Incubus lineage did not share. It did not step aside. When it desired, it consumed.

Marvin picked up the pencil again. The graphite touched paper. A line. Another.

Then the world quietly disappeared. His breathing settled. The ticking grandfather clock faded into the background.

Even the faint hiss of the modem dissolved into silence. Only the paper remained. Only the story. His hands wrote and drew at high speeds.

Dialogue filled the screenplay while storyboard panels appeared beside it, every shot sketched with effortless precision. Camera angles. Character blocking. Lighting notes. Lens suggestions. Tiny arrows indicating movement across the frame.

Nothing interrupted the flow. Nothing needed correcting. His pencil never retraced a line.

It’s simply... knew where it belonged. A narrow Sicilian street. Stone buildings weathered by generations of sea wind.

Laundry drifting lazily between balconies. Children chasing a football across uneven cobblestones.

The church overlooking everything. Watching. Judging. Waiting. Another page slid beneath his hand.

Interior. School room. Renato’s wandering gaze. Another storyboard panel. Close-up.

Malèna’s heels striking the pavement.

Cut.

The boys forgetting to breathe.

Cut again.

The wives pretending not to look.

The rhythm unfolded naturally, each page feeding the next before the ink on the previous one had even settled.

He wasn’t writing. He was recycling.

Then...

His pencil slowed.

The original had been written entirely in Italian. That wouldn’t work for his studio. The setting would remain Sicily. The people would remain Italian. But the dialogue would be written in English—the same convention countless historical films used. Audiences would understand they were speaking Italian even if they heard English.

The box office would thank him for it.

His eyes lingered on the empty space beneath Scene Twenty-One.

No. The original had stayed with Renato for too long. Renato would still be the audience’s eyes, but not its prison.

The original spent too much time observing Malèna from the outside.

His version would step inside her loneliness.

A few quiet scenes. No speeches. No melodrama.

Just enough for the audience to understand that every smile she wore was another mask.

Marvin drew a single line across the margin—not to erase, only to remind himself.

Add perspective. His pencil moved again. Interior. Malèna’s house. Afternoon. No dialogue.

She folded freshly washed clothes in complete silence. Stopped before a framed photograph. Her husband. Her fingers brushed the edge of the frame. Not dramatically. Not theatrically.

Just... Long enough.

The silence carried the grief words never could.

Marvin nodded almost imperceptibly. Monica would understand that scene. She wouldn’t need it explained.

The second act dragged. Not by much.

But enough. He condensed three repetitive sequences into one stronger scene.

The emotion remained. The runtime shrank.

Another page. Another storyboard.

Another camera note. The marketplace. Whispers.

Eyes following her from every direction. Not one face looked openly hostile. That was the point.

Cruelty rarely announced itself. It hid behind ordinary conversations. Behind polite smiles.

Behind lowered voices that somehow reached every corner of the town.

His pencil danced faster. The storyboard shifted. A wider angle.

The square itself became the witness. Children repeated rumors they didn’t understand.

Old men laughed because everyone else laughed. Old women watched from behind curtains without saying a word.

No Villains. Only people. Ordinary people. That made them infinitely more frightening.

He turned the page. The war pressed closer. Not through explosions. Through absence.

An empty butcher’s hook. Half-filled shelves. Shoes repaired one time too many.

A mother quietly dividing yesterday’s bread between three children while pretending she wasn’t hungry herself.

The audience didn’t need another battlefield. They needed to feel one. He smiled faintly.

Better.

The story was altered much but it wasn’t changing. It was breathing.

The awards were nice. Box office paid for the next ten films. He wasn’t making another art-house curiosity. He was making a prestige picture audiences would actually buy tickets to see.

Another page disappeared beneath flowing handwriting. Renato. The original innocence remained.

But each encounter would teach him something different. Not desire. Understanding. Admiration would become compassion. Infatuation would become regret.

By the end, he wouldn’t remember Malèna as the woman every boy dreamed about.

He would remember the price she had paid simply for existing.

His pencil never stopped moving. Dialogue. Storyboard. Production note. Camera movement. Music cue. Wardrobe adjustment.

A reminder to soften the afternoon light in the courtyard. A note to let silence linger two seconds longer before the next line.

Every department already existed inside his head.

Writer. Producer. Editor. Cinematographer.

They argued. They compromised. They perfected.

The stack of paper beside him continued to grow. Ten pages. Twenty. Thirty.

Each one is immaculate. No crossed-out dialogue. No discarded drafts. No wasted motion.

The lead moved across paper, sketching the storyboard panel beside the lines of dialogue. Image and word growing together, twin vines of a single vision. The light from the desk lamp carved a circle of gold around his work, leaving the rest of the library in shadow.

Outside, the San Marino night was perfect and still. Inside, a boy who was not a boy began to write a love letter that would also be a claim of ownership, a declaration of war against time and the very nature of cinematic creation.

Another blank sheet found its place beneath his hand. Marvin didn’t look at the clock.

He didn’t notice the hours slipping away. There would be time for sleep later.

Right now... There was only the next scene.
