”The committee your grandfather knows—they’ll test you in ways that have nothing to do with it. They’ll want to see if you can survive the pressure of being *you* in a venue where your name means nothing.”

”I understand.”

”Do you?” Grant’s voice dropped, becoming intimate, almost rough. ”Because if they let you through, if you stand there next year in September, and if you miss—if you shake, if you crumble—the fall won’t be private. It will be public. The same press that calls you a prodigy will call you a pretender. They’ll say the emperor has no army. They’ll tear at you until—”

”Grant,” Linda warned.

”No, let him finish.” Marvin looked up at his father, a stillness in his eyes that hadn’t been there before New Zealand. ”Let him say it.”

”They’ll tear at you,” Grant repeated, his grip tightening, ”until you wonder if you ever had any substance at all. And your mother and I will have to watch it happen. We’ll have to watch our son be dismantled on live television because he reached for something pure in a world that only knows how to sell spectacle.”

The room held its breath.

Marvin reached up and covered one of his father’s hands with his own. The gesture was small, but it carried the weight of every understanding that had passed between them.

”I need to know,” Marvin said softly. ”Don’t you see? I’ve spent three years being *Marvin Meyers*—the brand, the phenomenon, the boy who never misses. But I need to know if I’m capable. Like I am capable of doing so many things.” He turned to look at his mother. ”If I don’t try, I’ll never know. And if I never know, I’ll become hollow. I’ll become exactly what they’re already saying I am—a fabrication.”

Linda rose from her chair and knelt beside him, resting both hands on his knees so she could look him in the eye. ”You could wait,” she said, her voice catching. ”You’re only thirteen.”

She swallowed hard. ”You don’t have to carry the weight of the world yet.”

Her fingers tightened ever so slightly.

”If you wait until you’re older... until the world is so blinded by the myth they’ve built around you that they can’t see anything else... then If you stumble, they’ll call it a bad day instead of a failure. Right now...” She shook her head, her eyes glistening. ”They’re watching you too closely. They’re waiting for you to be more than a person.”

”Mom.” Marvin leaned forward until his forehead rested gently against hers. ”That’s exactly why I can’t wait.”

He smiled, small but certain. ”I don’t want people to believe in a myth that never had to prove itself. If I’m going to fall, I’d rather do it now, while I can still get back up.”

His voice softened. ”I’d rather earn the halo than hide behind it. And I don’t want to wait. I want to *be*. While I’m still young enough to survive breaking.”

They stayed like that for a moment—bound by love, fear, and the terrible recognition that genius was not a gift but a demand.

Finally, Linda pulled back and wiped her eyes, offering a shaky laugh. ”You’re going to give me grey hair before I’m forty.”

”You already have grey hair,” Marvin said, smiling now. ”I’ve seen you plucking them.”

”Cheeky monster.” She stood, smoothing her dress, and looked at Grant. ”He’s going to do it regardless of what we say.”

”Yes,” Grant agreed.

”And we’ll support him regardless of what happens.”

”Yes.”

”Even if—” She stopped, unable to say it.

”Even if,” Grant finished.

Marvin stood, unfolding himself from the chair with that confident grace that had made him famous, and embraced his mother. She held him tight, feeling his ribs, his strength, and the terrifying velocity of his heart.

”Just promise me one thing,” she whispered against his shoulder. ”Don’t forget that you’re still a child.”

She held him a little tighter. ”You’re allowed to be tired. You’re allowed to be scared. You’re allowed to fall short sometimes.” Her voice broke. ”And no matter what happens... no matter what the world says... you’ll always be loved.”

She closed her eyes. ”You don’t have to stop being a kid just because everyone else forgets you are.”

”I promise,” he lied gently.

Grant joined the embrace, wrapping his arms around both of them. For a moment, the Meyers family stood in the candlelight, holding on to each other against the coming storm of scrutiny and expectation.

”Your grandfather will make the calls,” Grant said finally. ”He knows people who still believe in merit. They’ll see the video—the one without the horse, the seven bullseyes. They’ll know it’s not trickery.”

”They’ll know,” Marvin confirmed.

”And then they’ll test you.”

”I hope so.”

Linda pulled back, holding her son’s face in her hands. ”When they do—when you stand there, wherever it is they take you to prove yourself—remember that we love the boy, not the bullseye. Not the perfect shot. Just you.”

Marvin nodded, his eyes suspiciously bright. ”I know, Mom.”

”Do you?”

”I’ve always known.”

They returned to their seats and the meal resumed, but the atmosphere had shifted. The worry remained—and always would remain, Linda knew, until her son was safely past the age where the world demanded he justify his existence every single day. But there was something else now. Acceptance. The quiet solidarity of a family deciding to face the fire together rather than lose the one they loved to the cold.

As they finished dessert—a simple apple tart that Marvin ate with surprising appetite—Grant raised his glass.

”To New Zealand,” he said. ”And to whatever came into you to do this.”

”To sequence,” Marvin added, touching his water glass to his father’s wine.

”To love,” Linda said, looking at them both. ”Which is the only thing that doesn’t require perfection.”

They drank. The candles burned lower, and outside the mist rolled in from the sea.

New Zealand had been, by Marvin’s incredibly rigid standards, almost entirely unstructured.

For the first time in a long while, Marvin had actually rested.

He’d slept deeply enough to feel the difference, even the quiet rhythm of his demonic nature settling into better balance. He’d wandered empty beaches with nowhere to be and nothing demanding his attention, letting the wind and the waves strip away the weight he’d been carrying for months.

Maybe that was what a real vacation was supposed to feel like.

...Though, in Marvin’s opinion, it was still missing one rather important ingredient.

Ladies.

Without them, calling it a perfect vacation felt a little too generous.

....

...

..

.

The next morning, June 9th, Marvin sat at the desk in his home office. He drank cold milk, looking at the terminal not to check it or process new information, but the way a general regards a map after an order of battle has been issued. The map doesn’t change. The plan is in the field now.

The June sunlight was the best kind of Laurel Canyon morning light—early enough to still have some angle to it, coming through the east-facing window in bars that caught the dust and made the ordinary air briefly beautiful. The mockingbird was in the oak tree. It was always in the oak tree. Marvin had stopped thinking of it as a specific bird and begun thinking of it as a feature of the landscape, like the hawk on the ridge or the way the canyon smelled after rain.

He opened the notebook to a fresh page.

He did not write immediately. He looked at the clean white page for a moment, the way he always did before writing—not from hesitation, but from the habit of allowing the first sentence to fully form before committing it to paper. Then he wrote: *June 9, 1999. Position review and forward plan.*

He paused. Then beneath it: *The Yahoo program is complete. What remains is what comes next.*

The Yahoo! story, when Marvin looked at it whole—running thirty-two months from October 1996 to the April 1999 option expiry—was not a story about money in the narrow sense. It was a story about what happens when a correct thesis is held with absolute discipline through every piece of turbulence, every temptation, and every moment conventional wisdom says the strategy is too aggressive, too concentrated, or simply too strange to be credible.

The equity position—the original 31,576 shares accumulated in October 1996 at nineteen dollars, which had split twice into 126,304 shares—had been partially liquidated in April..

Marvin sold forty percent of the equity when the stock hit the territory he had told Andrew it would reach. The sale produced cash that Andrew described, in a flat tone Marvin recognized as controlled astonishment, as ”a number I wasn’t prepared to see attached to a single stock position.”

The remaining sixty percent of the equity—approximately 75,782 shares, still held inside Scarlet Capital with the patience of a block of stone—sat at a current value that made other people’s entire portfolios feel small.

The options program, continuously reinvested through three- and six-month call structures against a stock that had multiplied exponentially, produced realized cash distributed across the program’s various cycles.

When aggregated in Andrew’s final accounting, it produced a total that made Grant look at it twice. With the careful tone of a man who wants to be precise, he had said, ”I want to confirm these figures before I say anything else.”

The figures had been confirmed. Three times. The total realized proceeds from the Yahoo! options program, from its inception in October 1996 through the final April 1999 settlement, exceeded one point one billion dollars.

Combined with the partial equity sale in April, the total cash generated by the Yahoo! program in all its forms was a number Marvin had spent thirty-two months working toward. It had arrived with exactly the weight he had anticipated.

One point three billion dollars.

Approximately.

Not all of it sat in cash—a significant portion remained deployed in the live positions structured through the days of meetings.

The tax treatment of capital gains at this scale was its own complex exercise that Hoffman managed with the care of someone defusing something that could become very expensive very quickly. But the gross figure was real, confirmed, and documented.

Andrew had said, at the end of the meetings, that he intended to frame the final Yahoo! program summary and hang it in his office. He said it with the dry humor of a man protecting his sincerity with irony. Marvin had told him that would be premature. The larger part of the story was still being written.

Andrew had looked at him for a moment. Then he said: ”Of course it is.”

The Nasdaq at 3,000 was not the peak.

This was what the bears had wrong and the bulls had accidentally right, for entirely the wrong reasons. The index was going to three thousand five hundred. It was going to four thousand. It was going to the extraordinary peak of five thousand, one hundred and thirty-two, which it would reach on a Monday morning in March of 2000 with the serene indifference of something that has been climbing so long it has forgotten that climbing requires an eventual destination.

And then it was going to fall.

Not gradually. It was going to fall the way things fall when the belief holding them up is suddenly withdrawn—fast, and then faster and faster, with the specific velocity of something whose weight has been increasing for three years and which has now been abruptly introduced to the physics it had been ignoring.

Between June 1999 and March 2000, the Nasdaq would rise approximately seventy percent.

Between March 2000 and October 2002, it would fall seventy-eight percent.

Marvin intended to be long for the first part, in the most leveraged and aggressive way a rational risk framework could support. And short for the second part, with everything he could carry.

The capital deployed from the day of decisions was structured in two phases. Each possessed its own instrument selection and timing logic, designed around dates Marvin carried in his memory with the specificity of a calendar that had been handed to him rather than assembled.

The first phase—already in motion with the January LEAPS on the Nasdaq 100 and the highest-beta technology names established at the beginning of the year—was performing exactly as structured. The Nasdaq’s move from 2,300 to 3,000 pushed the long-dated calls deep into the money. The mark-to-market on the full LEAPS book was a figure representing more than a tripling of the original thirty-one million dollar deployment in five months.

The January 2000 expiry gave them seven more months of runway—seven months in which the market would continue doing what it had been doing, until reaching the level at which an exit was not only profitable but necessary.
