Each had earned its reputation precisely because it possessed its own identity, its own creative philosophy, and executives who knew their audiences better than anyone sitting behind a desk in Los Angeles ever could.

And they were merely the beginning.

Within a few years there would be pop labels, rock labels, country labels, urban labels, classical divisions, soundtrack companies, international subsidiaries, publishing houses, artist management firms, recording studios, merchandising businesses, touring operations, and eventually dozens of companies and hundreds of labels spread across multiple continents.

If every decision had to travel upward for approval before flowing back down again, the organization would grind itself into paralysis.

Yet allowing every company complete independence would produce something equally dangerous—an empire whose individual kingdoms marched in different directions.

The challenge wasn’t building the companies.

It was building the structure above them.

A parent organization powerful enough to coordinate the entire ecosystem while remaining almost invisible in the day-to-day creative process.

Shared distribution. Shared publishing. Shared legal services. Shared finance. Shared international licensing. Shared technology. Shared data and market intelligence. Shared manufacturing partnerships. Shared merchandising. Shared marketing resources. Shared video production. Shared touring support.

Everything that benefited from scale would be centralized.

Everything that depended upon creativity, instinct, and individual identity would remain with the labels themselves.

Marvin had no interest in creating another slow-moving corporate giant.

He intended to build a federation.

Independent creative companies supported by a common foundation so efficient that each label could focus almost entirely on discovering artists and making exceptional music.

It was a model decades ahead of its time.

Max Martin’s title reflected that philosophy.

On paper, he served as Chief Executive Officer of Meyers Music Group.

In practice, the position was considerably more nuanced. He wasn’t merely supervising quarterly reports or attending board meetings.

He remained one of the most commercially successful producers in the world, spending as much time inside recording studios as executive conference rooms.

To most corporations, that would have represented an obvious conflict of interest.

To Marvin, it was the company’s greatest competitive advantage.

Executives who stopped creating eventually stopped understanding creators.

Max would never suffer that fate. Every day spent producing records sharpened his instincts. Every artist conversation refined his understanding of where popular music was heading. Every hit record informed the strategic decisions he made upstairs.

He possessed something most corporate executives lost years earlier. Direct contact with the product.

Marvin, by contrast, occupied no position whatsoever. No Chief Executive. No Chairman. No President. No Founder whose name gleamed from a brass plaque outside an executive suite.

Nothing.

To anyone studying the corporate filings, he barely existed.

Meyers Music Group was wholly owned by Meyers Holdings.

Meyers Holdings answered to Scarlet Capital.

Scarlet Capital drew its capital and voting authority from Zenith Trust, an intricate web of holding companies, trusts, and investment vehicles spanning multiple jurisdictions, deliberately constructed to make tracing ultimate control a tedious, almost hopeless exercise.

On every official document, the controlling names were Irving Meyers and Grant Meyers.

Legally, they served as the Trust’s protectors and trustees, exercising its authority until its principal beneficiary reached the age stipulated by its charter.

That beneficiary was Marvin.

Upon his eighteenth birthday, every controlling right, every voting interest, and every layer of authority embedded within the structure would pass to him automatically.

Until then, the arrangement served a different purpose.

Protection.

To regulators, investment banks, competitors, journalists, and even most business partners, Marvin Meyers was nothing more than a gifted young entertainer fulfilling the remainder of his Columbia Records contract before eventually debuting under Wolf Brothers, the new label quietly being prepared for him.

A remarkably talented thirteen-year-old. Nothing else. Exactly as intended.

Anyone attempting to uncover who truly stood behind the empire would find themselves wandering through trusts, holding companies, nominee directors, and investment vehicles long before ever arriving at the Meyers family.

And Marvin’s name... ...appeared almost nowhere.

Inside the boardroom, however, everyone understood the reality.

Titles delegated authority.

Ownership made them optional.

Marvin had no desire to become another executive buried beneath meetings, committees, and organizational charts.

He designed systems. He allocated capital.

He selected the people.

He chose the labels worth getting, the music catalog worth acquiring, and the structure worth creating years before anyone else recognized they existed.

The executives managed the machine. Marvin decided where it would go. Every acquisition began with his approval. Every major investment reflected his judgment. Every long-term strategy originated in his office.

The signatures on the legal documents belonged to Irving and Grant signed by Marvin.

The decisions belonged to Marvin.

Without ever occupying a single position on the organizational chart, he had quietly placed himself above the hierarchy itself.

Not because he rejected power— —but because he understood something history had repeatedly proven.

The most enduring power was never announced by a title.

It was exercised so completely that titles became little more than administrative formalities.

”The new hire I want,” Marvin said toward the end of the conversation, leaning forward with his hands flat on the table, ”is a Head of Creative Development. Not A&R. Not Production. Creative Development. I want someone whose only job is to think about the artist pipeline five to eight years out. About the kind of artists we’re developing *toward*, rather than the kind we’re frantically acquiring today. That person reports directly to Max and works fluidly across all labels.” He paused, looking at Voss. ”Start the headhunting search. It should take around six months to find the right mind.”

”Search criteria?” Max asked, clicking his pen.

”Someone who has been right before about cultural things the market hadn’t recognized yet,” Marvin said, his eyes hard. ”I don’t care about their resume or their degree beyond that.”

The meeting officially ended at half past six.

The Stockholm line had dropped an hour earlier when it became late afternoon in Sweden and Björn had a prior commitment, apologizing with genuine Scandinavian courtesy.

The LA team had stayed through to the bitter end, signing off with the drained energy of people who had been on camera for eight hours and were deeply relieved to be done.

Patricia Moss had filled four pages of notes, wearing the expression of someone who had suspected she was walking into something unusual and had now confirmed it. To her surprise, she found herself energized by the vision boss shared.

David Chung gathered his materials with the smug efficiency of a man who understood the meeting had gone exactly as it did when the person at the head of the table already knew the conclusions and was simply using the room to guide everyone else there.

The video studio VEVO would be built. The director pipeline would be funded. He had already begun drafting the hiring specifications for the first set of cameras and positions in his mind.

Voss stayed behind to review minor operational items with Marvin and Max. They worked through them with the brisk efficiency of three people who had developed a telepathic shorthand. By seven o’clock they were entirely done. Voss left the room with his legal pad filled and a forward-tilted energy in his stride.

Max poured himself a final black coffee and sat back down. The table was covered with the debris of a long, historic day—paper cups, half-empty water bottles, notebooks, and scattered printouts.

He looked at Marvin, who was still in his seat. Marvin was looking at nothing in particular—not absent, but elsewhere, tracking something massive in his interior mind.

Amy quietly packed up her notes a few seats away, completely silent but absorbing the education of a lifetime.

Silence lingered over the boardroom.

It wasn’t the silence of uncertainty.

It was the silence that followed when an impossible vision suddenly acquired a blueprint.

Max Martin finally broke it.

”Universal is the largest music company on the planet,” he said quietly, almost to himself. ”Sony isn’t far behind. Between them, they generated 18 billion last year and employed tens of thousands of people across hundreds of labels, publishers, studios, and offices.”

His fingers rested against the edge of the table. ”And you’re talking about building something that doesn’t just compete with them...” He looked directly at Marvin. ”...but eventually replaces them.”

Marvin’s expression never changed. ”No,” he replied softly. ”Surpasses them.”

Another silence settled over the room.

It no longer sounded absurd.

After everything they had discussed over the past several hours—the acquisitions, the publishing strategy, the international expansion, the distribution network, the recording studios, the artist management, the Music Video studio, the merchandising, the infrastructure built for a digital future—it sounded disturbingly achievable.

Max leaned back in his chair, exhaling slowly.

”Ten years...” he murmured.

Marvin didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

The faint smile tugging at the corner of his lips was answer enough.

It wasn’t the smile of a dreamer imagining an empire.

It was the quiet confidence of an architect looking at blueprints for a building that already existed in his mind.

For the first time since the meeting had begun, no one in the room found themselves questioning whether Meyers Music Group could stand alongside Universal, Sony, or Warner.

The only question left... ...was how long it would take before the rest of the industry realized a new giant had already begun to rise..

Max drank his coffee. Outside the soundproof windows, New York was doing what it always did in the early evening—filling with the layered, chaotic noise of a city that didn’t change its energy between day and night, only its texture. Traffic, sirens, voices, and the subway’s distant, vibrating compression.

Above it all was the particular quality of sky New York produced at this hour: not quite dark, not quite day, something in between that was immediately recognizable to anyone who had spent time bleeding for success in the city.

”The video studio,” Max broke the silence again. ”Chung is good.”

”He is,” Marvin agreed, finally blinking.

”Where do we put it? Physically.”

Marvin considered it for a fraction of a second. ”Here. New York has the raw talent pool, the technical infrastructure, and the gritty production culture we need. Build it as an extension of the Maratone facility for a while, before branching off to do its own thing and once operations are running smoothly, consider establishing branches in Los Angeles, London, or other strategic locations as required. We’ll need another building, or more likely a massive warehouse in Brooklyn or Queens. Talk to the commercial real estate brokers tomorrow.”

Max noted this. Then, after a heavy pause: ”MTV called again while you were in New Zealand playing with bows and arrows.”

”I heard you the first time,” Marvin said, his tone warning.

”I know you heard me. I’m asking what you want me to tell them when they call tomorrow.”

Marvin was quiet for a long moment, the gears turning. Then: ”Tell them we’re building something. Tell them it’ll be worth the wait.” He stood up, straightening his tailored jacket with the unhurried motion of someone who was now ready to conquer somewhere else. ”And tell them we’ll be in touch on our timeline, not theirs.”

He picked up his slim, unmarked folder and walked toward the door, followed closely by Amy.

”New Zealand helped, didn’t it?” Max asked, not looking up from his coffee, referring to the sharp clarity in Marvin’s ruthless vision today.

Marvin paused at the door. He turned his head slightly. Something in his expression shifted, briefly, in the direction of something almost like human warmth.

”Don’t tell anyone,” he said, and stepped out into the hallway.

Max sat alone at the long table for another ten minutes, looking at his notes. They represented the operational agenda for the next six months of the most unusual organization he had ever been part of. He had a calibrated sense of what most corporate strategies were worth when they met reality.

And he had learned, over the preceding three years, that Marvin’s strategies had a peculiar, almost supernatural quality of surviving that encounter. Not always easily. Not always on the timeline. But always in the exact direction identified, and always to the scale projected, with the chilling consistency of something planned by someone who already knew the outcome of the war.

He closed the notebook and picked up his coffee cup.

---

Outside, New York pressed against the windows, indifferent and enormous.

The city breathed against the glass, indifferent and enormous, a thousand stories of light pressing against the darkening sky. Inside the Maratone Building’s revolving doors, the air had been sterile—recycled and over-conditioned, the smell of expensive carpet and power lunches. But out here, on the sidewalk of Fifth Avenue, New York exhaled its particular perfume: exhaust fumes and pretzel carts, autumn leaves and distant rain, the electric promise that anything could happen to anyone at any moment.
