But he also knew that if he stopped—if he let her believe for even one day that he’d given up, that she’d successfully driven him away with her silence—the wound would be deeper. The abandonment would confirm every fear she had about herself: that she was too broken to love, too damaged to keep, too sane to be with him.

She was stuck, he knew, on the third stage of the five stages of forbidden love. Denial had passed quickly—that night in the car had shattered that. Anger had flared, directed inward, the self-flagellation of a woman who believed desire was betrayal. Now she was mired in bargaining, trying to negotiate with her own heart, promising herself that if she just suffered enough, if she just denied herself long enough, the love would fade into something manageable, something she could lock away and forget.

She didn’t understand yet that love like theirs didn’t fade. It only waited.

Diana came to his mind then—her face flushed in a study lamplight, her elegant fingers doing things to herself while she whispered his name like a confession—and he sighed. A heavy, weighted sound that carried all his patience and all his longing.

He slipped the phone into his pocket, the weight of her silence pressing against his thigh like a physical thing. Adjusted his cuffs, the silver cufflinks catching light that had no business being so bright. Pushed open the glass doors, stepping out of the shadows and into the blinding, ravenous light of the Hollywood machine.

She would come back to him. But he would keep calling, keep leaving voicemails she deleted unheard, keep loving her in the only way she would allow—from a distance, constant, unwavering, patient as stone.

The third stage couldn’t last forever. Eventually, she would have to choose: the guilt that was destroying her, or the love that might save her.

He was betting on the love.

The Miramax executive screening room sank into darkness as the final credits of *The Others* drifted silently across the screen.

For several long seconds, no one moved.

No one even seemed willing to breathe too loudly.

The film’s suffocating melancholy still clung to the room, refusing to release its grip. It settled over veteran studio executives, distributors, marketing chiefs, and the invited exhibition partners like a heavy blanket of cold mist.

Representatives from AMC Theatres, Regal Cinemas, Loews Cineplex, United Artists Theatres, Edwards Theatres, Cinemark, Carmike Cinemas, and General Cinema sat scattered throughout the screening room, people who had collectively decided the fate of thousands of screens across North America.

Most had spent decades in the business. They had watched countless ”next big things” come and go.

Yet not one of them reached for a notebook. Not one whispered to a colleague.

They simply stared at the screen as the last notes of the score faded into silence.

Then the house lights rose.

The velvet curtains slowly parted.

The spell finally broke.

A long, collective breath swept through the auditorium before someone in the middle rows began applauding.

Another joined.

Then another.

Within seconds the room exploded into thunderous applause, the kind that came not from politeness but from genuine excitement. Several executives rose to their feet without realizing they had done so, while others exchanged the knowing smiles of people who had just watched something destined to make an extraordinary amount of money.

They all understood the same thing.

*The Others* wasn’t simply another prestige horror film.

It was going to be another event.

The finished cut remained remarkably faithful to the version Marvin remembered from his previous life. Only a handful of carefully considered alterations separated it from the original, each one designed to tighten the pacing, deepen the isolation, and sharpen the slow, creeping psychological dread until the final revelation landed with even greater force.

The film’s most devastating weapon, however, wasn’t something the audience could see.

It was something they could feel.

Marvin’s score.

Once again, the soundtrack carried the unsettling musical language of the Night Stalkers—discordant strings, low, almost subliminal bass tones, and unsettling harmonics arranged with unnatural precision.

The music never announced itself. It seeped beneath conscious thought, settling somewhere primitive, where logic gave way to instinct.

It didn’t merely accompany the images.

It invaded them.

Every creaking floorboard seemed heavier.

Every stretch of silence became unbearable.

Every shadow looked capable of breathing.

Combined with the oppressive cinematography of the isolated mansion, the result was almost suffocating.

Marvin’s movies didn’t just entertain; they completely immersed the audience in a suffocating, inescapable atmosphere, making them feel as if they were physically trapped inside the narrative with the doomed characters.

Many of the people in the room had spent decades watching horror films. Representatives from AMC, Regal, Loews Cineplex, Cinemark, United Artists, Edwards, Carmike, and General Cinema had screened hundreds—some thousands—of thrillers during their careers.

Very few still managed to frighten them.

*The Others* had.

More than one executive only realized after the credits rolled that they had been gripping the armrests hard enough for their knuckles to turn pale.

Another quietly loosened his tie.

Someone else laughed under his breath—the nervous laugh of a man relieved the nightmare had finally ended.

As the applause faded, the room’s atmosphere changed completely.

Business returned.

Conversations erupted across the auditorium.

Exhibition executives crossed the aisles almost immediately, introducing themselves to Miramax’s distribution team, comparing opening calendars, discussing screen allocations, print counts, premium evening showtimes, and expansion strategies.

More than one representative quietly asked the same question.

”How many prints are you planning?”

Because every one of them wanted more.

They all remembered what had happened with The Sixth Sense.

Too many exhibitors had underestimated demand during its opening weeks.

They had no intention of making that mistake twice.

In the exhibition business, leverage usually belonged to whoever controlled the scarce resource.

Most of the time, studios competed fiercely for the best auditoriums, the longest engagements, and the most favorable revenue splits. Booking negotiations could drag on for weeks.

The relationship between major movie studios and massive theater chains like AMC, Regal, and Cinemark was a brutal, high-stakes game of leverage. The studios held the product, but the chains controlled the real estate.

Today felt different.

The people representing America’s largest theater circuits weren’t trying to be convinced the film would work.

They had already convinced themselves.

Now they were negotiating over who would receive the largest piece of what everyone in the room believed would become another phenomenon bearing Marvin Meyers’ name.

The theater reps knew that *The Others*, backed by the ”Marvin” name, was going to print money. They were practically begging the Miramax distribution team for prime summer weekend slots, offering to bump competing studio blockbusters to smaller screens just to secure a piece of Marvin’s guaranteed box office dominance.

Harvey Weinstein spent the next twenty minutes shaking hands, accepting congratulations, answering questions about release strategy, and making promises he had no intention of keeping until contracts were signed.

Only after the last exhibitor had reluctantly drifted toward the exit to another meeting room, did he finally make his way across the room.

His tie had been loosened.

His jacket hung open.

He looked exhausted.

He also looked like a man who could already see another fortune waiting just beyond opening weekend.

Harvey fell into step beside Marvin, glancing around to make sure no one was close enough to overhear.

Then he lowered his voice. ”Marvin... tell me something.”

Marvin looked at him.

”The New Zealand thing.” Harvey studied his face. ”Those leopards.”

A beat passed.

”You really killed them?”

It had been bothering him ever since the story exploded across every entertainment page in America.

Harvey Weinstein knew publicity better than almost anyone in Hollywood. His first instinct had been to dismiss the entire thing as a publicity stunt—some clever piece of marketing Peter Jackson had cooked up to attract investors.

But the more he looked into it, the less the story fell apart.

Too many witnesses. Too many officials. Too many people with absolutely nothing to gain by lying.

Marvin smiled faintly. ”You think Peter staged it?”

Harvey shrugged. ”I’ve seen stranger things done for publicity.”

”The leopards were real.” Marvin’s voice stayed calm. ”So were the arrows.”

He met Harvey’s eyes without blinking.

”Peter Jackson and Richard Taylor didn’t even know me before that afternoon. They’re respected professionals. They’re not the kind of men who’d humiliate themselves in front of an entire country by pretending a thirteen-year-old saved them.”

Harvey searched his face for even the smallest crack.

He found nothing.

The kid either told the truth... ...or he was the greatest liar Harvey had ever met.

Harvey stared into the boy’s nebula-blue eyes and, terrifyingly. A shiver ran down the executive’s spine.

For reasons he couldn’t explain, Harvey believed him.

He let out a slow breath. ”Jesus Christ...” he muttered. ”That’s one hell of a story.”

”It was an interesting afternoon.”

Harvey barked out a laugh. ”I’ll say.”

He looked Marvin up and down again. ”You know, with that face and now this...” He gestured vaguely. ”You’ve suddenly got this whole myth built around you. Kid genius. Oscar winner. Leopard hunter.”

He smirked. ”People would pay to watch that.”

Marvin chuckled. ”Maybe someday.”

”You’ve thought about big budget action movies?”

”I have.” Marvin slipped both hands into his pockets. ”But not yet.”

Harvey raised an eyebrow.

”I’m thirteen. A bit too young and too short for the traditional leading-man action roles right now.” He smiled. ”Give me a few more years. I’d rather audiences believe I can throw a grown man through a wall instead of wondering whether I should still be in middle school.”

Harvey laughed again. ”Fair enough.” He nodded approvingly. ”That’s smart. Too many young actors try to grow up on screen before audiences are ready.”

Marvin simply inclined his head.

”I’d rather wait until the roles fit me.”

”Good.” Harvey’s expression shifted.

The amusement disappeared.

Business returned.

He leaned in slightly. ”So... I keep hearing things.”

Marvin looked at him knowingly. ”What kind of things?”

Harvey grinned. ”The expensive kind.”

He lowered his voice another notch. ”Word is you’re already writing something new.” A pause. ”Tell me that’s true.”

Marvin didn’t look the least bit surprised.

He leaned casually against the velvet-lined wall outside the screening room and smiled. ”So you’ve been talking to Jeff... and Amy.”

Harvey spread his hands innocently. ”I keep tabs.” A grin tugged at his mouth. ”You’re my biggest investment. I’d be an idiot not to know what you’re working on.”

”I figured.”

Marvin nodded once.

”Then yes. I’m finishing several scripts.”

Harvey’s eyes immediately lit up.

”Now we’re talking.”

”What’ve you got?”

Marvin answered without much fanfare. ”A few different projects.”

He shrugged. ”Most of them aren’t for the studios.”

Harvey frowned. ”What does that mean?”

”It means they’re mine.” Marvin folded his arms. ”My own productions.”

Harvey waited. ”The first one’s a vampire film. Small cast. Small locations. Small budget. I’m keeping it under three million dollars.”

Harvey blinked. ”Three million? That’s it.”

He couldn’t hide the disbelief in his voice. ”Marvin... you’re the hottest name in Hollywood right now. Why in God’s name are you making a three-million-dollar vampire picture? Why are you purposely hamstringing yourself?”

”Because that’s all it needs.”

Harvey Weinstein’s reaction was a masterclass in suppressed frustration. His thick eyebrows shot up, and his jaw tightened. To a studio boss who thrived on massive backend points and Oscar campaigns, a ”three-million-dollar vampire movie” sounded like a tragic waste of Marvin’s current, world-building momentum.

Harvey waved a dismissive hand. ”Forget that. Give me the script. I’ll put twenty million behind it. We’ll get real stars. Big marketing. Open it worldwide. If it hits, we’ve got a franchise.”

Marvin smiled politely. ”I don’t want a franchise. Not with this one.”

Harvey stared at him. ”Then what do you want?”

”Passion,” Marvin said simply. ”For once, I’d like the first question to be, ’Do I love this story?’ instead of, ’How many tickets will it sell?’”

He spoke calmly, but every word landed with quiet certainty. ”Because of the scale, I am not involving any big actors, established directors, or legacy producers. Honestly, I am not even entirely confident the movie will work financially. It’s an artistic experiment... I want unfiltered creative control. In a way, I am acting as the assistant director myself, and I am starring in it... When the film is finished—completely finished—I might license the distribution.”

”Might. But until then... It stays an independent production.”

Harvey exhaled through his nose. ”So you’re not looking for financing.”

”No. Not for that project.”

Marvin’s smile widened ever so slightly. ”The others...”

He let the sentence hang for a moment. ”...are a different conversation.”

That immediately caught Harvey’s attention again.
