A quiet moment here, a subtle decision there, nudging him forward until accepting the crown felt less like a final revelation and more like the inevitable destination of a man who had been walking toward it all along.

Boromir gave him pause.

His death would devastate audiences regardless. Marvin knew that firsthand. But Faramir inherited more than Gondor’s burdens; he inherited the shadow of his brother. A single additional memory between them—something small and deeply personal—would echo through the later films, lending even greater weight to every choice Faramir made.

He scribbled a short note in the margin before continuing.

Some of the grand heroic moments leaned too heavily on slow motion. They worked because they were rare. Keeping them that way would make each one hit with greater force instead of allowing the audience to grow accustomed to them.

By the time he reached *The Return of the King*, another thought surfaced.

The Army of the Dead should arrive as the final shove that broke Sauron’s armies, not as a miracle that erased the sacrifice already made on the Pelennor Fields. Victory always carried more meaning when it still demanded a terrible price.

His fingers paused over the pages describing Frodo and Sam’s march through Mordor.

A few more quiet conversations. Nothing dramatic. No speeches. Just two exhausted friends clinging to each other in the middle of a hopeless journey. The mountain would feel even heavier if the audience had one or two more chances to simply exist beside them before everything finally broke.

Near the end, Marvin found himself smiling.

The farewells didn’t need to change. They only needed a slightly firmer hand in the editing room. Trim a transition here, shave a few moments there, and the emotional release would remain intact while carrying the audience to the credits with just a little more momentum.

There really wasn’t much else.

The flaws weren’t structural. They were the sort of imperfections that only revealed themselves after millions of people had watched the films for years, after endless edits in fans’ minds and countless discussions about what could have been trimmed or emphasized.

These were all relatively minor refinements.

The trilogy was widely regarded as one of cinema’s greatest achievements, so there weren’t many fundamental flaws to fix.

It wasn’t broken. At best, he could polish a few edges. The goal wasn’t to outdo Peter Jackson—it was to help him make the film he was already trying to make, with the benefit of hindsight. Anything more ambitious risked damaging the very magic that had made the trilogy immortal.

Peter wasn’t building an ordinary fantasy film. He was building a classic.

And classics were polished—not rewritten.

Just as Marvin closed the final PDF, the glass door to his office swung open.

Jeff Raymond walked in carrying three towering stacks of manila folders and headshots balanced precariously against his chest. Several résumés threatened to slide onto the floor with every step.

He looked exhausted.

Not the kind of exhaustion that came from missing a night’s sleep, but the sort earned after weeks of airports, casting rooms, production offices, and endless interviews.

Without ceremony, he dropped the folders onto the conference table.

”They’re done.”

Marvin looked up from his storyboard.

”The final shortlist?”

Jeff nodded.

”Cast. Department heads. Assistant department heads. Camera crews. Lighting. Art department. Wardrobe. Makeup. Everyone.”

Finding actors had been difficult.

Finding the right crew had nearly driven Jeff insane.

To build the production team for *Let the Right One In*, he had spent weeks in New York personally interviewing young technicians alongside seasoned professionals.

Independent productions, commercials, film schools, television crews—he had searched everywhere for people with talent rather than impressive résumés.

That search had led him to an unexpected realization.

Meyers Music Group was spending a fortune constructing VEVO’s music-video production facility in Brooklyn.

With the company’s growing roster of singers, bands, and future record labels, hundreds of music videos would eventually pass through those stages every year. The facility wouldn’t simply need directors. It would require assistant camera operators, focus pullers, grips, electricians, lighting technicians, production assistants, set builders, wardrobe assistants, makeup artists, editors, assistant editors, and hundreds of other crew members capable of moving from one production to the next without missing a beat.

The more Jeff studied the staffing requirements, the more obvious the overlap became.

A music video and a feature film might tell different stories, but cameras were still cameras.

Lights were still lights.

A dolly grip didn’t suddenly become a different profession because the shoot lasted three days instead of three months.

The same applied to assistant camera operators, electricians, grips, wardrobe crews, assistant editors, production assistants, and countless other technical positions.

There was no reason those people couldn’t work in both worlds.

Jeff had deliberately recruited ambitious young technicians instead of filling every position with expensive veterans.

Not to replace experienced film crews. To grow beneath them.

Every department would still be led by seasoned professionals with years of feature-film experience. But working alongside them would be assistants hired directly into the Meyers organization, rotating between VEVO’s music-video productions and Marvin’s films.

Music videos became classrooms. Feature films became the graduation exam.

A lighting assistant might spend Monday through Thursday shooting a music video for one of Meyers Music Group’s artists, then spend the next two months learning under a veteran gaffer on a feature production.

An assistant camera operator could pull focus on a fast-paced music-video shoot one week, then step onto a film set where precision mattered more than speed.

Editors would cut promotional videos between films instead of sitting unemployed waiting for the next project.

Everyone kept working.

Everyone kept improving.

Most importantly, they stayed within the company.

Hollywood crews were freelancers by necessity.

When one production wrapped, they scattered across Los Angeles and New York chasing the next paycheck.

Marvin intended to build something different. A permanent technical workforce. Every music video sharpened their instincts. Every feature expanded their experience.

Every production increased the company’s own pool of skilled technicians, reducing its dependence on outside hires one project at a time.

He rested a hand on the mountain of folders. ”We’re casting a vampire movie.”

A tired smile finally crossed his face. ”But what we’re really building...”

His hand tapped the stack of crew files. ”...is the foundation of our own filmmaking ecosystem.”

Jeff had taken the crew search upon himself because Amy no longer had the luxury of thinking about individual hires.

Marvin was trying to build a studio. Not buy one. Build one. There was a difference.

When Warner Bros. greenlit a film, hundreds of people already knew exactly what came next. Legal drafted contracts before producers even asked. Payroll opened files automatically.

Production accounting generated cost reports every morning. Locations had databases filled with permits from shoots stretching back decades. Preferred vendors answered the phone on the first ring because they had been doing business with the studio since before most assistants were born.

None of that existed for Meyers Studios. There wasn’t a legal department. There wasn’t a production office with thirty years of filing cabinets. There wasn’t a payroll division capable of paying four hundred crew members every Thursday.

There wasn’t a transportation department with its own dispatch office. There wasn’t even a purchasing department. Every system had to be invented. Every procedure had to be written. Every form had to be designed before anyone could fill it out.

Amy understood Marvin’s vision and she wasn’t simply hiring people. She was deciding what the company itself would look like.

How would crew members submit overtime? Who approved purchase orders?

How many signatures were required before money left the company’s account? Where were contracts archived? Who tracked rented and bought equipment? Who verified insurance certificates?

Where did wardrobe inventories go after filming wrapped?

Questions nobody ever thought about inside an established studio suddenly became urgent because there was no existing answer.

Every decision Amy made would become company policy. Not just for *Let the Right One In*.

For every film that followed.

Some days she spent more time designing workflows than making the movie itself.

One week disappeared simply deciding how different departments would communicate without drowning each other in paperwork.

Another vanished into designing standardized production reports, purchase orders, and budgeting templates so future productions wouldn’t have to reinvent the process from scratch.

Then came the equipment meetings.

They consumed days at a time.

Amy sat down with veteran cinematographers, production managers, gaffers, key grips, sound mixers, and equipment suppliers, trying to answer a deceptively simple question:

What should a brand-new studio actually own? Buying everything outright was impossible, even for Marvin.

The largest studios had spent decades assembling their inventories. Their warehouses held millions upon millions of dollars’ worth of cameras, dollies, cranes, lighting rigs, generators, grip equipment, sound gear, editing systems, wardrobe racks, makeup stations, portable dressing rooms, production trailers, honey wagons, prop storage, workshop machinery, and countless other pieces of equipment accumulated one production at a time.

Meyers Studios had none of it. Every purchase required debate.

Should they invest in another Panavision camera package, or continue renting until the production slate grew larger? Were Chapman dollies worth owning this early, or would rental houses remain more economical? How many grip trucks would realistically be needed over the next three years? Was it smarter to build their own costume warehouse now, or wait until television productions entered the picture?

There were no obvious answers.

Some equipment would pay for itself after only a handful of productions. Other purchases would sit in storage, tying up millions of dollars that could have financed another film.

By the end of the month, more than thirty million dollars had already been committed—not to glamorous premieres or movie stars, but to the invisible machinery that audiences never saw. Camera packages. Lighting and grip equipment. Editing suites. Sound-recording gear. Makeup stations. Wardrobe inventory systems. Production trailers, office trailers, generators, workshop tools, and enough miscellaneous equipment to fill warehouses that still smelled of fresh paint.

It was only the beginning.

Marvin’s long-term acquisition plan stretched across several years. Anything the studio expected to use constantly would eventually be purchased. Everything else would continue to be rented until expanding production justified the expense.

She insisted every contract, invoice, equipment log, location agreement, payroll record, and insurance document be indexed the same way.

”If we’re looking for this five years from now,” she’d told the office staff, ”I don’t want anyone opening twenty boxes to find it.”

Nobody complained. They understood. They weren’t making history. They were organizing it.

The same philosophy reached every corner of the company.

The accounting department consisted of three people working around folding tables because the permanent offices weren’t finished.

Human resources was one woman operating out of a converted conference room with stacks of employee files reaching almost to the windows.

Production coordination borrowed telephones from the outside because their own hadn’t arrived yet.

Half the furniture still smelled new.

The company stationery had been delivered only two weeks earlier.

Some office doors didn’t even have nameplates.

The building looked complete from the outside. Inside, it was still becoming a studio.

That was why Jeff’s trip mattered.

Recruiting wasn’t simply filling vacancies.

Every camera assistant he hired became the benchmark for future camera assistants.

Every production coordinator helped establish how productions would be coordinated.

Every electrician, every grip, every assistant editor, every wardrobe assistant became part of the company’s culture before the company even had one.

Hollywood studios spent generations developing institutional knowledge.

Meyers Studios had to compress that process into months.

There would be mistakes. There had to be. The goal wasn’t perfection.

The goal was building a machine that became a little better every time another production passed through it.

Building a studio wasn’t a single investment. It was a slow accumulation of thousands of carefully considered decisions, each one laying another brick in the foundation of a company they hoped would still be making films decades from now.

Jeff had removed one enormous burden from Amy’s shoulders.

By sourcing junior crew through VEVO’s growing network, he wasn’t merely supplying manpower.

He was creating the first bridge between Marvin’s companies.

Young technicians could spend months shooting music videos, learning discipline, speed, and professionalism before stepping onto a feature set under experienced department heads.

The arrangement solved two problems at once.

VEVO gained a stable technical workforce instead of constantly hiring freelancers.

Meyers Studios gained a pipeline of crew members who already understood the company’s expectations before a single frame of film rolled.

It wasn’t as glamorous as casting actors or signing directors.

But Jeff knew something most people in Hollywood didn’t.

Studios weren’t built by stars. They were built by systems. And someone had to build those systems first.
