Before filming *Mission: Impossible 2*, he recognized the rising dominance of DVDs and renegotiated. He bumped his dividend to 30%, pulling an unprecedented 12% of total global DVD sales profits.

It was the kind of ”king-level” deal every actor dreamed of. Tom Cruise had negotiated terms so favorable that Mission: Impossible 2 ultimately earned him more than Paramount itself. Once production costs, marketing, and distribution expenses were accounted for, the studio’s share shrank dramatically, while Cruise’s carefully negotiated percentage kept growing.

It was a masterclass in leverage—and proof that the biggest stars didn’t just command the screen.

When Lansing would eventually depart Paramount in 2006, the new boss would terminate the deal, but right now, Sherry was still steering the ship. The two sides were in their honeymoon phase—no stormy seas yet.

”Well,” Marvin said, getting straight to the point. ”A close friend of mine auditioned for a supporting role in An American Rhapsody this morning. She gave a great audition, but one of the casting assistants has decided to play gatekeeper instead of doing his job.”

He paused for a beat. ”I want her name back where it belongs—at the top of the callback list.”

Cruise laughed. It was a minor, everyday political favor in his world. ”That is very simple, Marvin. Give me her name. I’ll make a phone call to Sherry’s office right now.”

”Scarlett Johansson,” Marvin said. ”Thank you, Tommy.”

”Give me five minutes,” Cruise promised, hanging up.

Marvin kept the phone in his hand. The car hit a red light, idling on the quiet street. Exactly four minutes later, the screen lit up with an incoming call.

”Done,” Cruise announced cheerfully. ”Tell your friend to expect a call from the casting director in the morning to sign the contract.”

”I appreciate it, Tommy,” Marvin smiled. ”I owe you a favor for moving the needle so fast.”

”Haha, don’t worry about it, kid,” Cruise joked warmly. ”I’ll make sure you pay it back when we negotiate future deals. Enjoy your night in New York.”

Marvin ended the call. Tapping the phone against his chin, a satisfied smile settled on his face. He didn’t need to yell or throw his weight around a casting office to protect his girls. He just needed to know which lever to pull to make the machine run exactly the way he wanted.

The Warwick Hotel in Queens offered a stark contrast to the gilded luxury of the Hilton. The hallway air carried the permanent scent of industrial carpet cleaner and old coffee.

Inside their rented suite, Melanie Johansson sat on the edge of the floral sofa. A late-night talk show played at a low volume, casting a flickering blue light across the room, but her attention was disconnected from the screen. She was waiting.

The wooden door clicked open.

”How was your date?” Melanie asked as Scarlett stepped inside.

The moment she saw her young daughter safely home walking like a normal girl, the tension in her shoulders eased almost imperceptible. Not that she would have panicked if Scarlett hadn’t come back that evening.

Marvin wasn’t the sort of young man who rushed people. Over the past year, Melanie had watched him closely. Hollywood had taught her to distrust charm, wealth, and influence, especially when they belonged to someone with every advantage imaginable.

Marvin possessed all three. He came from one of the industry’s most powerful families, moved comfortably among its biggest names, and could have had the attention of almost any aspiring actress with little effort. Scarlett, by comparison, was still fighting for auditions, still trying to carve out a place for herself in a business overflowing with beautiful faces.

The imbalance between them couldn’t have been more obvious.

Marvin had never once used it.

He had never dangled opportunities, never made promises, never pressured Scarlett into proving her affection.

If Marvin had ever wanted to take advantage of that imbalance, he could have. Scarlett loved him deeply enough that she likely wouldn’t have turned him away. Yet, in all the time they had known each other, he had never once tried to rush her or pressure her into taking their relationship further.

Instead, he seemed determined to let their relationship unfold at her pace instead of his.

That told Melanie far more about his character than any grand speech ever could.

For all his over confidence and charms, he cared enough about Scarlett to value her trust more than his own impatience, unlike any man she ever met.

As a mother, that was surprisingly reassuring.

”Very nice,” Scarlett smiled, her raspy voice carrying a lingering warmth. She dropped her bag on a side chair and collapsed onto the sofa, kicking off her sneakers and curling her feet beneath her.

Melanie leaned forward, her eyes narrowing with a mother’s sharp intuition. ”Mmm, great. So, did he try to kiss you? Or try to... do it?”

Scarlett’s face flushed a deep, violent red. ”Mom!” she gasped, grabbing a throw pillow to hide her burning cheeks. ”No! We didn’t do anything like that.”

”So, no kiss then?” Melanie teased, refusing to drop it.

”It was just...” Scarlett mumbled into the pillow, desperate to get her mother off her back. ”It was just a small smooch on the lips. And I initiated it. Then I ran out of the car.”

Melanie couldn’t help the fond smile that spread across her face. Watching Scarlett fluster over a boy, she saw her daughter growing up right in front of her.

”Did you tell Marvin about the *An American Rhapsody* audition?” Melanie pressed, shifting the topic back to business.

”I told him what happened with the assistant,” Scarlett admitted, resting her head against the cushion. ”But I didn’t ask him for help to get the role.”

Melanie frowned in exasperation. ”Why not? Didn’t we talk about this? With Marvin’s connections, he could fix that situation without trying. A single phone call from him changes the weather in a casting office.”

”Mom, I don’t want anyone to owe him a favor because of me,” Scarlett said, sitting up. She understood the underground economy of the entertainment industry well. ”You know how this town operates. Favors are the real currency. They’re tracked in ledgers we never see. If Marvin calls a studio executive to force a casting choice, that executive expects something in return. A discount on a soundtrack, an option on a book, a piece of a future gross.”

Scarlett rubbed her temples. ”You know the dark side of those favors. A favor today is a trap tomorrow. It starts with a phone call, and a year from now, some producer thinks he owns you and expects you to show up at his hotel room to pay off the debt. And it goes darker than that. If the studio head forces the casting director to hire me, that creepy assistant is going to know I went over his head. I don’t want to be a pawn on their chessboard. I want to earn my place.”

”You are a stubborn kid,” Melanie sighed. She respected the integrity, but she also understood the ticking clock of a young actor’s career. ”Fine. Do what you want. But you need to land that *Ghost World* indie project. The long waiting period between roles destroys momentum. Sit still too long, and the studios forget your face.”

”I know, Mom,” Scarlett said quietly.

A sharp buzz vibrated against the wooden coffee table.

Scarlett’s Nokia 6160 phone lit up. It was a Christmas gift from Marvin, given alongside a pair of sapphire earrings. The earrings sat locked in a safety deposit box; the streets of New York were too unpredictable to wear that kind of wealth openly. But the phone never left her side.

She picked it up, checking the monochrome screen. A bright smile broke across her face.

”Mom, it’s a message from Marvin.”

Melanie raised an eyebrow, a teasing note in her voice. ”Oh? After being apart for a few minutes, he already sends you a message? He really does keep you on a short leash. Open it. Let’s see what the billionaire has to say.”

”Hehe, I know what it is,” Scarlett laughed, clicking the keypad.

She read the glowing green letters.

Her smile froze. Her eyes widened, scanning the short sentence a second time to ensure she was reading the words correctly.

Then, she let out a piercing scream of pure joy. ”Ahhh! Mom, it’s Marvin!” Scarlett jumped up from the sofa, holding the phone out like a trophy. ”He helped me get the role! I’m going to play in *An American Rhapsody*!”

The text on the screen read: *Scarlett, that role is yours. By tomorrow at the latest, someone will contact you to sign the contract.*

”Really?!” Melanie leapt up, her previous frustration evaporating. She grabbed her daughter by the shoulders, pulling her into a tight, spinning hug. ”Oh, my god, Baby! That is wonderful!”

They celebrated in the center of the small hotel room, the exhaustion of the audition process washed away by the undeniable proof of Marvin’s protection.

---

A few miles away, a black Car glided down the illuminated streets of Manhattan.

In the quiet, leather-scented backseat, Marvin snapped his flip phone shut and set it beside him. A faint smile tugged at the corner of his mouth.

He could already picture Scarlett’s reaction.

First the disbelief.

Then the stunned silence.

And finally, the smile that would slowly spread across her face once she realized the role was hers.

Knowing he had lifted that weight from her shoulders was satisfying enough.

But Marvin had also been deliberate.

He hadn’t asked someone else to pass along the news or hidden behind an anonymous favor. He made sure the message came directly from him.

People liked to romanticize anonymous acts of kindness.

Marvin never saw the point.

He needed Scarlett to know, without a shadow of a doubt, that he was the maker of her victory.

The concept of doing good deeds anonymously was a romantic fiction invented by humans to make themselves feel righteous. The demon operated on the unyielding laws of leverage and devotion.

In the real world, If you changed someone’s life, they deserved to know who had reached out a hand. Otherwise, the goodwill vanished into thin air, leaving nothing behind but an unexplained stroke of luck.

Relationships weren’t built on invisible gestures.

They were built on trust, memory, and the quiet understanding of who had stood beside you when it mattered most.

Gratitude needed a face.

As the car passed the neon glow of Times Square, Marvin shifted his thoughts away from the casting office and toward the larger mechanism he had utilized to secure the favor: Tom Cruise, Sherry Lansing, and the corporate structure of Paramount Pictures.

Marvin had been analyzing the precedent-setting contract between Cruise’s production banner and Paramount.

Regardless of any whispered personal arrangements between Lansing and Cruise, the foundational prerequisite for an agreement handing over thirty percent of global DVD sales to an actor was raw, unassailable leverage.

Major movie studios didn’t surrender equity out of the goodness of their hearts; they surrendered it when they had no other option.

Tom Cruise possessed that leverage. Even if his partnership with Paramount fractured tomorrow, he held the rights of *Mission: Impossible* franchise. That alone ensured he could walk into any boardroom in Los Angeles and dictate his terms. United Artists and Merrill Lynch were already circling, waiting for the Paramount deal to expire so they could open their checkbooks.

Tom Cruise had done more than negotiate an exceptional contract.

He had kicked open a door that many Hollywood stars hadn’t even realized could be opened.

For decades, studios had dictated the terms. Now one actor had shown that, with enough leverage, a star could stand across the negotiating table as an equal and walk away with a share of the profits that once belonged almost exclusively to the studio.

From Cruise’s and Actors perspective, it was a brilliant victory.

From Marvin’s perspective, it was also a warning.

One promise quietly settled into his mind.

When the day came for him to own a studio, he would never build a business that could be held hostage by a single actor, no matter how famous.

Even If that meant producing only films based on intellectual property he controlled—his own movie, the projects starring the women in his circle, and his animated films—then so be it.

The foundation of his empire would never be a celebrity.

It would be the intellectual property itself.

Characters could be recast.

Franchises could be rebooted.

He would build his empire on the strength of his own intellectual property. He controlled the source code. He would never allow a situation akin to the future Marvel Studios dilemma, where Robert Downey Jr. commanded a hundred million dollars for a single appearance because the character had eclipsed the studio.
