Reborn As Super Heiress

Chapter 1557: Chapter 1541: Granny Jue the Shaman

Where exactly have the bodies of Qibao’s father and grandmother gone? And who are the two people buried in the coffins? These two questions troubled Huo Sining, but she couldn’t possibly tell Third Auntie right in front of her that there were people in the coffins. She could only rely on analysis and speculation to deduce the truth.

”Auntie, are the two people Mountain Chief hired to dig the graves from the village?”

Huo Sining vaguely suspected that those two might be the ones who offended Qibao’s father and grandmother, but she wasn’t sure, so she couldn’t help but inquire with Third Auntie.

Third Auntie nodded and muttered, ”Yes, those two young men, one is the Mountain Chief’s nephew, and the other is his niece’s son. Neither of them is worth anything, always lazing around, relying on the Mountain Chief’s authority to run amok in the village.”

”But for some reason, after digging the graves last year, both of them went out to work. They only came back once for the New Year and haven’t returned in these months at all. Even their families can’t reach them. People in the village are all saying that those two did bad things outside and got caught and thrown in jail!”

Upon hearing this, Huo Sining’s heart skipped a beat.

Yes, it must be those two!

She originally found it strange how the village was missing two people and no one noticed. If that’s the case, then it could be explained.

It seems like the people in the village think those two men are working outside and have no idea that they’ve died and are buried in the coffins beneath this bamboo grove!

If she hadn’t seen it herself, this might have become an unsolved case.

Moreover, Huo Sining suspected that when the families of these two men discover their disappearance and report it to the police, they might never find their bodies.

After all, not every police officer has her extraordinary investigative skills to see through to coffins buried two or three meters underground.

Huo Sining wasn’t that kind-hearted. Even though she saw the bodies, she couldn’t reveal this information.

Firstly, these two weren’t killed by her, and she’s unrelated to the matter. She just saw it by accident, with no cause-and-effect relationship, so she has no psychological burden;

Secondly, she couldn’t explain how she knew there were bodies buried in the coffins. If the police were to investigate, she couldn’t give a reason and might unwittingly bring trouble upon herself.

So she wasn’t going to get involved in this matter. Those two weren’t good people anyway. Anyone who could do something as vile as digging up graves can’t be expected to have any moral limits, right?

What Huo Sining wanted to know now was who killed these two people, by what means they were buried directly underground, and whether the person did it out of personal vendetta or to avenge the humiliation suffered by Qibao’s father and grandmother?

After returning to the Stilted Building with Third Auntie, Huo Sining started inquiring about matters concerning Qibao’s mother and father from the Old Granny, hoping to gather more useful information.

Third Auntie didn’t have much to say about Qibao’s father, but when it came to Qibao’s mother, she had endless stories to tell.

From the mouth of this Old Granny, Huo Sining unexpectedly learned that Qibao’s mother was, surprisingly, a witch.

In fact, most young people in the village scoff at fortune-telling. Many of them have received modern education and thus have new ideas about science, thinking of witch doctors as frauds. To them, fortune-telling is baseless, mere nonsense without any scientific credibility or theoretical support.

But the elders in the village don’t think that way. Granny Jue’s fortune-telling skills are highly esteemed by the old folks in the village.

In the depths of these elders’ memories is a firmly rooted belief that gods exist only in the hearts of the devout—believe, and they exist; disbelieve, and they don’t. Granny Jue is seen as the only one in the Miao Village who can communicate with the gods.

Clearly, Third Auntie belongs to the latter group.

When Huo Sining asked about Granny Jue’s deeds, this Old Granny began recounting the legendary tales of Qibao’s mother’s life, even describing Granny Jue’s Witch Gu and fortune-telling skills as supernatural.

For example, Qibao’s mother used a bowl of incantation-infused talisman water to save a woman on the brink of death;

Or Granny Jue predicted misfortune and imminent death for a dying person, stating outright that Yama would claim him by midnight, not sparing him until dawn. Sure enough, less than three days after the divination, that person died in a car crash on the spot.

She even recounted an exaggerated tale: during the years of war, Granny Jue acted as a leader, taking advantage of the night to lead a group of Xiangxi corpse chasers and sorcerers to transport the bodies of soldiers who died tragically in foreign lands back to their hometowns.

In the Miao Village, the mysterious presence of corpse chasers allows countless spirits to rest in peace, not having to die away from home in foreign lands.

Huo Sining had never before delved into these matters, but the Xiangxi corpse chasers were indeed famous, and she had heard bits and pieces.

Huo Sining was once a staunch materialist who dismissed tales of gods and ghosts. If she had heard about Granny Jue’s deeds in her previous life, she might have walked away dismissively;

But in this life, after obtaining the Water-Repelling Pearl, many incidents in the past two years seemed like dreams. After experiencing various strange occurrences, Huo Sining had to admit that not everything in this world can be explained by science, at least not with the science currently known.

Just like how she can’t explain the origin of the Water-Repelling Pearl and the Jiaoren, or the storage ring in her hand, her special abilities like Invisibility, and the Heavenly Eye—these are all inexplicable by common scientific logic.

Especially when Third Auntie’s wrinkled, dry hands took out something wrapped in silk from her old wooden box, revealing an old slate with an Eight Trigrams Array painted on it when opened. She solemnly declared that this slate was the sacred tool Granny Jue used for fortune-telling.

Seeing Third Auntie’s face filled with unwavering belief, almost to the point of devotion, Huo Sining found herself entertaining an absurd thought.

She faintly felt that maybe all those stories about Qibao’s mother, about the Witch Gu and corpse chasing, as recounted by this Old Granny, could indeed be true.

This Old Granny might be hiding some secret on her person, which had been discovered by the Mountain Chief. Driven by profit, the Mountain Chief then pressured her, and even after the Old Granny’s death, persisted, to the extent of resorting to such despicable acts as grave robbery.
