The Adventures of an Overpowered Knight in Another World

Chapter 745- Divine Paladin Takes the Field

The pressure of the wind was violent, but when it reached Reinhardt, it became gentle, as if unwilling to harm him in any manner.

Mountains flashed past beneath them, and the landscape became a blur.

Reinhardt did not slow down. Throughout the journey, neither of them spoke. Only the howling wind accompanied them.

Along the way, whenever a Demonic Legion appeared, he would take them out in a single slash or with a single beam of divine light. Even the ones far away but still in the range of his attack were not spared.

Like this, entire formations of demons disappeared before they even realized what had happened.

One after another, golden pillars of light repeatedly erupted across the battlefield. From afar, the advancing knight teams stared in disbelief.

”...That light...”

”It can’t be...”

”The Divine Paladin!”

”Commander Reinhardt has returned!”

Cheers erupted throughout the battlefield the moment they saw the figure donned in that platinum-gold armor. In fact, they did not even need to see his figure. Just that overwhelming presence and the shower of radiant divine light raining from the heavens was enough to tell others who had arrived.

The exhausted knights instantly felt their morale surge.

On the opposite side, the demons reacted just as quickly. After all, the number of demons dying at the hands of this great exterminator was too high. And this number continued to rise as time passed.

Demon messengers spying on all the battlefields from miles away hurriedly flew over to the main camp to report the arrival of this great storm.

”Great Lord Astaroth, the D-Divine Paladin has appeared. He is advancing toward the central battlefield.”

”He has annihilated nine legions already. No, ten. Ten legions have already been erased.”

The news spread through the battlefield like wildfire. On the human side, hope had returned. On the demonic side, a familiar nightmare had once again resurfaced.

Main Camp of the Dawnbringers.

Not long afterward, a streak of golden light descended from the heavens.

BOOM...

The impact sent dust and loose snow billowing across the main encampment. Everyone instinctively turned toward the source.

The moment they saw the familiar golden-haired figure, their eyes widened in surprise. They were all quite delighted by his appearance.

On Silvia’s group side.

”Ooohh... Commander!”

Kevin was the first to react. His face instantly lit up.

”Hahaha! Commander! I knew it! There was no way you’d lose to some damned scheme of those demons!”

Everyone believed that Reinhardt had fallen to some scheme of the demons inside the capital of the Ancient Kingdom.

Without caring about decorum, Kevin ran over excitedly, grinning from ear to ear.

”Commander, you’ve got no idea how much trouble we’ve been in!”

Behind him, Silvia quietly let out a breath of relief. Her usually composed face softened ever so slightly.

”Welcome back, Commander.”

Beside her, Gwen crossed her arms as though trying to remain indifferent. But she was a bad actor. The raising corner of her lips betrayed her. The relief in her eyes and gestures was impossible to hide.

Not far away, watching the man appear, Delicia’s heartbeat quickened. Her beautiful face flushed faintly, and for several moments, she simply stared at Reinhardt. Her eyes refused to let his figure leave her sight.

”Reinhardt...”

She softly whispered, trying to calm the surging emotions in her heart.

Rolan, meanwhile, burst into laughter.

”Hahaha... I told you all, our Commander wouldn’t die that easily. I should have bet my entire fortune on it.”

Vangeance, as one of the most loyal followers of Reinhardt, also showed a delighted expression. He cracked his neck and revealed a savage grin.

”About damn time the Commander showed. I was getting tired of this one-sided beating. Now...”

He gripped his weapon.

”...let’s return the favor.”

Reinhardt didn’t fly towards them. Although he wanted to exchange a few more words, that could wait. Right now, he had other urgent matters.

Seeing the direction he was heading...

The smiles on everyone’s faces gradually faded. A heavy silence settled over the surroundings. No one followed, and no one spoke. They merely watched his departing figure.

Before long, Reinhardt arrived at another section of the encampment. Unlike the lively atmosphere behind him, this place was deathly quiet.

The banners of the Guardians of the Divine Radiance fluttered weakly in the cold wind. Every knight stationed there looked utterly exhausted. Dark circles stained their eyes. Their expressions were filled with grief.

The moment they noticed Reinhardt, all of them straightened and paid their respects. But there was no heart to it.

”Commander.”

Reinhardt did not mind. He spotted a familiar face and spoke.

”Take me to Vanessa.”

The Extreme Knight who was spoken to stepped forward. With an expression of anguish, she opened her mouth to say something.

”Commander Reinhardt... Saintess... she is...”

But before she could continue, Leona, standing by Reinhardt’s side, gently shook her head. Her look said... He needs to see it himself. Only then would he be able to believe it.

The knight froze. Then, with a dispirited expression, she led them.

”Please, this way.”

No one spoke during the walk. Only the sound of footsteps echoed between the tents.

Soon, the knight stopped before a solitary white pavilion and spoke with a hoarse voice.

”She is inside.”

Reinhardt nodded and slowly lifted the curtain.

The interior of the tent was devoid of any furnishings. Instead, it was marked with several runes that glowed softly throughout the empty tent. At its center rested a single coffin.

A graceful figure lay peacefully upon it. Her entire body had been wrapped beneath a white cloth covered with countless purification runes. Everything here was meticulously preserved. As though everyone wanted to let her have her final sleep.

Reinhardt strode inside the tent. But those who knew him could tell that his steps were heavy.

Slowly, he reached out and gently slid the cloth covering her face.

There she was. Vanessa.

Her beautiful features remained exactly as he remembered them. Serene, gentle... Almost as though she had merely fallen asleep.

Only her complexion had become unnaturally pale. There was no warmth, breathing, or life remaining in her body.

For several long moments, Reinhardt simply looked at her, unable to believe that she really had died.

Then fury, extreme fury, boiled inside his body.

Demons!!!

Crack...

His fists were clenched so tightly that the sound of bones grinding echoed quietly inside the tent.

The Extreme Knight lowered her head and explained.

”When the demons brought out that cursed artifact and spread chaos in the formation, to save everyone, to preserve the remaining hope of humanity, Saintess Vanessa accepted every curse upon herself. She assured us that she would be alright and that it was necessary for humanity to stand a chance to fight back.”

As she said that, a bitter smile appeared on her face.

”But in the end, even she could no longer withstand them.”

Reinhardt remained silent. From the moment he strode inside the tent, he had yet to speak a single word.

As he looked upon Vanessa’s peaceful face, countless memories surfaced in his mind.

As the three heroes of Solaris and people who became knights at the same time, he had quite a few interactions with her. Her gentle smile. The way she always worried about others before herself. The warmth she brought simply by her presence.

Ever since becoming a knight, she had always been reckless. There was a time when she rushed towards a charging mountain troll. Not because she valued her own life little, but because she valued everyone else’s so much that she would rather risk her own.

Whenever there was trouble, whenever humanity suffered misfortune, she would be the first one to lend her aid.

As a knight, she did not seek glory, nor was she particularly interested in it. All she wanted, ever since becoming a knight, was to help the situation of humanity and bring a better tomorrow.

One could say she truly lived as the Saintess humanity admired. Even at the very end, she had chosen to shoulder everyone else’s suffering. And according to those who stayed beside her, she had smiled until her very last breath.

Reinhardt slowly closed his eyes.

Having once borne the Curse of Ophiuchus himself... He understood better than anyone how terrifying those ancient curses truly were. One such curse had nearly claimed his own life.

Yet Vanessa had accepted not one, but every curse released by that demonic artifact.

The agony she must have endured was unimaginable. Yet somehow, she had still found the strength to reassure everyone around her.

The Extreme Knight quietly spoke again.

”Commander, I advise you not to touch her. The curses remaining within Saintess Vanessa have reached an unimaginable concentration. Before passing away, she personally created the formation and this sacred cloth to suppress them. So that no one else would become their victim again.”

As she said that, her voice trembled with emotions.

”So please, after saying your farewell, cover her once more.”

By the end, tears were already flowing from her eyes.
