King of the Wilderness

Chapter 793: Chapter 359: The First Night at Sea, Mastering the Lonely Planet

”If the ascent rate is too fast, the pressure drops rapidly, and the dissolved nitrogen will form bubbles in the body, like opening a bottle of soda, blocking blood vessels, causing severe pain, or even death.”

He wasn’t scared by these terrible consequences; instead, he developed a strong interest in the working principles of the ”dive watch.”

Immediately, he went online to look up the technical documentation of the Shearwater Teric watch he purchased, which uses the ”Bühlmann ZHL-16C gradient factor algorithm.”

On the screen, complex mathematical formulas and body tissue models turned into a vivid dynamic landscape in his eyes.

He understood how the electronic watch calculates the nitrogen saturation of 16 different ”tissue compartments” in his body in real-time based on depth and time.

And it planned for him a safe no-decompression stop time and ascent rate, solving the ”physical” level of danger.

Next, his gaze turned to another aspect of nitrogen, nitrogen narcosis. The demon known as the ”rapture of the abyss.”

”Martini’s law...” he looked at the textbook’s description, ”Descending every 10 meters, the narcotic effect of nitrogen is roughly equivalent to drinking a Martini.”

”When the depth exceeds 30 meters, most divers will experience varying degrees of symptoms.”

The textbook listed typical symptoms of nitrogen narcosis: euphoria, delayed reactions, impaired judgment, hallucinations, and even extremely foolish and dangerous behaviors such as taking out the regulator to share with fish in the water.

”I see,” a flash of enlightenment appeared in Lin Yu’an’s eyes, ”if decompression sickness is the chronic poison that strikes after diving, then nitrogen narcosis is the hallucinogen that can kill you during the dive.”

He immediately compared this concept to his situation.

He possessed mental and willpower far superior to that of ordinary people, able to remain utterly calm when facing harsh environments and psychological pressures in the wilderness.

”Can my mental resilience resist the physiological narcosis of high-pressure nitrogen on the central nervous system?” he hypothesized in his mind.

”This narcotic effect acts more on synaptic signal transmission rather than merely psychological, and no matter how strong the willpower, it may not completely exempt one.”

”The best response is not confrontation, but identification and control.”

He memorized the methods of dealing with nitrogen narcosis from the textbook.

Stay calm, focus on simple tasks (like checking instruments), recognize the symptoms, and immediately ascend to a shallower depth until symptoms disappear.

He even began to think about how to safely guide his companion to ascend if she showed symptoms of nitrogen narcosis while deep diving, rather than forcibly dragging her up.

After thoroughly researching both the physical dangers of nitrogen (decompression sickness) and its physiological narcosis (nitrogen narcosis), Lin Yu’an truly understood the seriousness of scuba diving.

It is not just about equipment and skills but a comprehensive science of physical, physiological, and psychological control.

In less than two hours, he had completely ”digested” this nearly 200-page textbook.

He not only memorized all the key points but more importantly, he understood the physical and physiological principles behind each rule and integrated them into a knowledge system.

He even mentally rehearsed dozens of times, based on the textbook content, for the skills Riven might teach tomorrow.

Mask clearing, regulator recovery, controlled emergency swimming ascent (CESA)... every step and point of each action were ingrained in his mind.

In this deep ocean far from land, Lin Yu’an, had, in just the time of a meal, completed a theoretical conquest of another blue world.

Now, he only needed to wait for an opportunity to turn these theories into actual muscle memory.
