Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 348: Chapter 343: What the Flower Said

Location:Zhū’kethara, Demon Realm

Date/Time:Later that day. Late Emberwane, 9939 AZI

Realm:Demon Realm

Lyria’s quarters were in the west wing, at the end of a long corridor where the floor was cool stone, and the windows overlooked the terraced gardens Vaelith and the other healers had been rebuilding since the exodus. It was late-afternoon by the time she got there. The light was the colour of old honey, and the air smelled faintly of crushed thyme from the herb terraces below.

She didn’t want to go inside. Going inside meant being alone with the vision. She stopped at her door with her hand on the latch and tried to breathe and found that her breath had gone shallow again without her noticing, the way it kept doing this afternoon, the way a body with too much to carry kept forgetting the bottom of the breath.

She pressed her forehead against the wood.

She stayed there for a while.

Then she opened the door.

She did not go in straight away. She set her satchel by the entrance and crossed the room to the tall, narrow window that opened onto the stone ledge overlooking the gardens, because if she was going to be alone with the vision, then she was going to be alone with the vision in sunlight and not in the half-gloom of an interior. She pushed the window open.

On the ledge, on the warm grey stone, was a flower.

It was small. It was slightly flattened, the way a flower went slightly flattened when it had been pressed between two pages and then lifted out for placement. Its petals were the particular dusty-purple of a wildflower that grew in clusters on rocky ground, the kind of purple that looked almost grey in certain lights and then, when the sun caught it, went suddenly, unmistakably purple.

Lyria’s hand went still on the window-frame.

She stared at it.

She stared at it for the time it took for her heart to climb up into her throat and then climb back down again.

She had seen these flowers before.

She had seen these flowers before, at home, in the valley where she had grown up and where her mother had taught her the names of plants, and she had mentioned them once — once, three months ago, to Vaelith, in passing, in a voice that had been trying to be casual because she had not wanted to admit to Vaelith that she missed the valley that much —

Those purple ones remind me of home, she had said. *We had them in the valley. Mama called them — *

And she had not remembered the name her mother had called them, and Vaelith had nodded, and that had been the end of it.

Three months ago.

A hundred conversations ago. A hundred people walking past the archway outside the healers’ atrium, where she and Vaelith had been sitting.

She picked up the flower.

It was warm. Not sun-warm — the ledge was in shadow at this hour. Warm the way something was warm when it had been held, carefully, all the way from wherever it had come to where it was now placed.

She brought it inside.

(Someone was listening.)

(Someone was — )

She stopped.

She stood in the middle of her room with a pressed flower in her palm and the afternoon light coming slantwise through the window, and she understood several things all at once, and none of the understandings finished themselves.

She found her book — the small leather-bound one where she kept Vaelith’s exercises — and she opened it to a page near the back, and she laid the flower between the pages, and she closed the book, and she set the book on her bedside table.

She sat down on the edge of the bed.

She put her hands in her lap.

She cried, a little, without making a sound. Not the crying she had done in Vaelith’s chamber. A different crying. The crying that came from a different place. She did not try to stop it, and she did not try to examine it, and eventually it stopped by itself, and she wiped her face and breathed out and realised that her wings — for the first time all day — had fully relaxed.

She touched them, at the base, where they joined her back. The membranes were warm.

She did not understand why she felt less alone.

She only understood that she did.

***

The next morning, there was a stone.

She found it on the same ledge. She almost missed it, because it was small — small enough to fit in the curve of her palm — and the grey of it matched the grey of the stonework, and it took her a moment of looking to realise that the small shape against the ledge was not part of the ledge.

She picked it up.

Her breath left her.

It was carved. Small and careful. The outer shape was a rough oval, the sort of pebble you would pick up in a streambed, and someone had taken the pebble and had carved into its surface a pattern of flowing lines — not a rune, not exactly, not a written thing. A pattern. Lines that caught the light and broke it, the way her prophetic rune caught light and broke it when she was in a vision, silver-white patterns running across her skin.

They had put the pattern of her rune into the stone.

Not the rune itself. The way the light moved around the rune. The thing a person would only have noticed if they had watched her — watched her carefully — the times her rune had glowed. Which meant they had been watching her rune. Which meant they had been somewhere visible during her visions. Which meant —

(He sees me.)

(*He sees me and he doesn’t call me — *)

She turned the stone over.

On the underside, near one edge, the carving was rough. Less precise. As though the carver’s hand had slipped, or trembled, or paused too long in one place and left a groove that should not have been there. An imperfection. The kind of imperfection a hand made when it was learning to do something again that it had not done for a long time.

She curved her palm around it.

She pressed it to her chest, briefly, without planning to, and then she felt embarrassed by the gesture even though she was alone, and she put the stone in the inner pocket of her tunic, the one that sat closest to her ribs.

It stayed there.

She wore it through morning meditation. Through breakfast with Vaelith. Through the walk to the Hall for Ren’s noon council — where she sat at the back, quiet, her fingers returning to the stone through the fabric without her noticing — and then through the afternoon in Vaelith’s clinic, and through the evening meal, and through the last watch of training before bed, and when she changed for sleep she took the stone out and set it on her bedside table next to the book with the pressed flower, and she lay in the dark looking at it until she fell asleep.

***

Voresh stood at the perimeter of the compound.

He did this most evenings. It was not his assignment. No one had assigned him to the perimeter. He had begun standing there not long after they had come through the exodus crossing — after the first night Lyria had slept in her quarters at Zhū’kethara — and he had continued standing there each evening since, and nobody had asked him why, and he had not volunteered the reason.

The reason was simple.

Lyria’s window faced the east garden. The east garden’s far edge was the perimeter. He was three hundred paces from her window, which was close enough that he could see the candle-light when she lit it, and far enough that she would not feel watched if she looked out. He was far enough not to presume. He was close enough to know if she cried out.

He had been Vor’shal, once.

He had been Vor’shal, and he had been waiting to die, because a warrior with one leaf left did not live very much longer, and he had been ready — ready the way men became ready after enough millennia of carrying the wrong weight. He had been a long stretch of time without the colour red. He had been a longer stretch without laughter. He had been waiting for the last leaf to fall, and he had been neither afraid of it nor eager for it, only tired in the way that particular men became tired when the war never quite ended and the names kept being added to the wall.

Then the King had sent him to Thornhaven.

It had been a simple errand, as these things were counted in demon work. A small village near the Mid Realm border. An untrained prophetess, young, aging too fast — her people tucked away in a walled settlement of two hundred and fifty souls, trying to keep her hidden. The King had given him the Zhu’ren Kael to carry on his person, which had made it a mission of consequence whether Voresh had wanted it to be or not, and he had gone because the King had asked, and because he had nothing else to do with the leaf still clinging to his vine.

He had walked into the village in the afternoon.

He had catalogued the defences as he approached — Peak Inferno-tempered work on the palisade, perhaps a Blazecrowned elder’s touch in the keystones, sentries competent enough for the scale of threat they expected and entirely unprepared for the scale of threat that had just walked through their gate. He had not meant them any harm. He had meant only to find the girl, deliver the King’s seal, assess her condition, and send word back to Zhū’kethara. Simple work.

He had stepped into the courtyard where her family stood waiting.

He had looked at the mother first, because the mother had been angriest, and a warrior learned to address the threat before the other things in the room.

He had not looked at the girl yet.

And then he had looked at the girl.

Her eyes were not storm-grey. Not exactly. Storm clouds had silver lightning in them, and that was closer — the grey shifting through itself, silver moving through the grey like light moving through water. Her hair had copper and gold threads running through brown. Her eyebrows arched like wings. Her mouth was shaped like a smile that had not yet happened and was about to. There was a small dimple on her left cheek.

Colour had come back.

All of it at once. The red of her mother’s hood. The green of the pines behind the palisade. The gold of the late sun on the stone. The blue so high in the sky it hurt to look at. Thirty thousand years of grey lifting in a single breath, and behind the colour, underneath the colour, the beast in him — dormant, long believed dead — had surged up roaring.

MATE. CLAIM. PROTECT. OURS.

He had fought it. He had spent thirty thousand years learning to fight things that moved faster than thought. He had not expected to fight himself, and he had not expected to barely hold.

The ritual words had come out unbidden.

Zhu’anara, ahn’sul veth kira, mal’ahn veth sora.

He had spoken them quietly — not to the girl, to the courtyard, into the air between them — and he had felt the binding settle in his chest the way a key settled in a lock, and he had known in that same breath that he would never again be able to raise a hand against her for as long as he drew breath.

She had looked at him.

She had not looked afraid. That was the thing that had almost unmade him. She had looked at him carefully, the way a person looked at someone they had already seen — not in the flesh, but somewhere — and she had not flinched, and her copper-eyed stranger had stepped out of her visions and into her family’s courtyard, and she had recognised him.

Her mother had been furious.

Aldris, her father, had been torn — the practical man, half-human, half-elf, who could see that a King’s warrior with the Zhu’ren Kael was not a threat to argue with.

Voresh had told them, carefully, that the words had been a protection oath. That was not untrue. They had been much more than that, but the part he had said aloud had been true, and the rest he had kept back because the girl was fourteen, because the mother already hated demons for reasons Voresh had not yet learned, because the whole of the truth laid out at once would have done damage to a household that had already taken more damage than it could hold.

Lyria had looked at him across her father’s shoulder.

She had known the oath was more than he said.

She had not contradicted him. She had only watched him, quiet, the way she watched things, and he had understood — even then, even without language for it — that she was deciding something, and that whatever she decided would matter.

She had decided to let him stay.

That had been the first strand.

His vine had registered it before his mind had — a small settling, a small pause in the falling — the last leaf clinging where before it had been sliding off. Voresh had gone to the corner of the courtyard that had been offered to him, and he had sat down on the bench there, and he had put his hands on his knees, and he had breathed for a while without thinking about anything at all.

The quintet had arrived before dawn.

Vaelith and Vorketh had come in the days after.

And Voresh had begun the work of learning her. He had learned her patterns. When she woke. When she slept. What she ate and what she would not eat. Who settled her (Vaelith, almost immediately) and who unsettled her (the Aetherwing elders who came sometimes to look at her the way elders looked at rarities). What made her wings tuck tight, and what made them loosen. He had catalogued her preferences the way he had once catalogued troop movements, and he had never spoken of it, not to her, not to anyone.

He had spoken, once, to Vaelith.

How long?

As long as it takes, Vaelith had said.

Centuries, perhaps.

Perhaps.

He had nodded. He had gone back to whatever perimeter was his that day.

He had offered her small things in the Mid Realm, before they had come through the crossing — careful things, the sort a warrior could place within a young girl’s reach under her father’s roof without presuming. Nothing heavy. Nothing that asked. Small marks of attention that a clever child could choose to keep or to give quietly away, and either choice would have been honoured. She had kept some of them. He had not asked which.

The crossing had come. The demon realm had come. The settling of eight hundred thousand souls into a city not yet built for them, and Lyria’s family around her and his quintet around him and Vaelith everywhere at once, and Voresh had set the small offerings aside for a time, because a city being born was not a place for courting gifts — it was a place for stillness, and watchfulness, and the particular kind of patience a demon male was meant to know how to do.

The gifts had begun again six weeks ago. Different now. His own hand. His own craft.

He had carved the first stone for three nights and ruined it twice before the third attempt, and he had not known he could still work a stone like that — the work had been his, once, in a youth so remote he could no longer clearly remember the shape of the hands that had done it. His hands had been unsteady. The first passes of the stylus had gone wrong. His thumb had cramped. He had sworn, quietly, in a language that had not been spoken aloud in a long time, and he had started again.

The third stone had been acceptable.

The fourth stone had been better.

By the seventh, his hand no longer shook.

He did not bring her the first six. He did not bring her anything for a long time, not since the crossing — the Mid Realm gifts had belonged to a girl under her father’s roof, and that girl had walked through a gateway into a different world, and the register that had worked there was not the register that worked here. He had needed to find a new language. He had needed to find it in his own fingers, which had forgotten how. He had needed to be sure.

He brought her the flower first, because the flower had come to him without any plan on his part — he had been walking past a bush near the training grounds and he had remembered, precisely, the day three months ago when he had passed her sitting with Vaelith in the atrium and heard her say those purple ones remind me of home and he had looked at the bush and thought oh and had not moved for a long moment. A flower was small. A flower was allowable. A flower did not ask for anything.

He had pressed it in his own book.

He had kept it for a week to be sure it had dried correctly.

Then he had placed it on her ledge at an hour when she would not be in her quarters, and he had gone back to the perimeter, and he had stood there, and when he had seen her return — when he had seen, through the small flare of her window-candle, the silhouette of her at the window, picking the flower up, holding it — he had discovered that his jaw had clenched so hard it hurt, and that his throat had closed, and that his copper eyes were wet for the first time in the length of time he no longer kept count of.

He had made a small sound. He could not describe the sound even to himself.

He had gone to his quarters. He had sat down on the edge of his cot. He had put his face in his hands, and he had stayed that way through the early part of the night, and when he had lifted his head again, the first thing he had thought was: I have to be careful now. I have to be very, very careful now. She is fourteen. She is frightened. She is a Prophetess of a line that has been hunted for generations. She is carrying a gift that is breaking her. And I have, by putting a flower on her ledge, made myself a feature in her life that she did not ask to have. I have to do this right. I have to do it slowly. I cannot let her ever feel that the gifts are a pressure. I cannot let her ever feel that accepting one is a promise. I have to —

He had stopped thinking in sentences, at that point, and had just breathed for a while.

Then, because his hands needed something, he had gone to the shelf where the stones were — the seven he had carved over the past weeks, the ones he had not planned to bring her yet, the ones he had told himself were practice — and he had picked up the best of them and had turned it over in his palm. Small enough to fit her hand. Silver-white patterns along the surface, the way the light had moved around her rune, the times he had seen it glow. The seventh stone. The one where his hand had stopped shaking.

He had held it through the rest of the night.

In the first grey of dawn — before the watch changed, before the kitchens stirred, before anyone was up to see him doing it — he had gone to the east garden, and he had climbed the low wall at the perimeter the way he had climbed walls once as a very young warrior long before he had forgotten what youth felt like, and he had placed the stone on her ledge beside the empty space where yesterday afternoon’s flower had been.

Then he had gone back to the barracks and lain down, and he had not slept.

Now he stood where he always stood, at the eastern edge of the garden, his copper eyes adjusted to the dimming light, his stillness so complete that a lacewing had landed on his sleeve an hour ago and had not yet left. Lyria’s window was lit. He could see her shadow moving against the pale-gold square of it — small, precise, her wings folded — and then the shadow vanished as she moved away from the window, and then it was only the candle-light, steady, a small warm square in the stone face of the west wing.

She had kept the stone.

He did not know, yet, how he knew this. He had not been close enough to see. But the Vor’kesh at his throat — five strands of green now, curled in a crescent at the base of his neck, and a sixth starting along the underside where only he could feel it — the Vor’kesh had warmed, during the afternoon, in a way that did not have a single identifiable cause, and he had understood that the vine was responding to something he could not see, and that was how he knew.

She had kept it.

She had kept it in a place where her body was near it. That was a courting response. Not an acceptance — he would not have survived an acceptance, not yet, and was not asking for one — but an acknowledgment. A small one. A fourteen-year-old girl who did not know the rules of the game had played the move that meant I have received this, and I am not frightened by it, and the vine at his throat had registered the move.

He closed his eyes for a moment.

He did not pray. He had never really prayed, not in a formal sense. But he held the moment carefully, the way a man held a small flame in a windstorm, and he breathed, and when he opened his eyes again, the candle in her window was guttering, and he understood that she was going to sleep, and he waited — as he always waited — for the candle to go out.

It went out.

He remained.

He stayed at the perimeter another hour after her candle died, because old habits about watching over sleeping people took longer to release than habits about watching over waking ones. Then he moved, soundless, back to the barracks where he slept when he slept at all, and he lay down without taking his boots off, because in thirty thousand years he had not broken the habit of being ready, and he stared at the ceiling, and at some point before dawn he slept.

***

Vaelith noticed everything.

She had noticed everything for a long time. It was part of her training and part of her gift and part of being married to Vorketh, who noticed everything too, and who had taught her young in the relationship that noticing was an act of love only if you were also capable of the second act, which was knowing when not to name the thing you had noticed.

She had noticed Voresh’s perimeter walk from the beginning — the evening of their first week at Zhū’kethara, a healer on late rounds had seen a figure at the garden’s edge and stopped, alarmed, and Vaelith had said without looking up from her patient: leave him. That is Voresh. She had spoken of it to no one since.

She had noticed the first flower the morning after it appeared, when Lyria had come to training with her hair braided differently — a small braid along the side, with something tucked into it that Vaelith had not initially identified and had then, on a second pass through the corridor, identified as a dried purple flower the exact colour of the wildflowers that grew on the rocks near the training grounds. She had noticed the slight shift in Lyria’s carriage that morning. The wings fractionally looser at the base. The eyes a fraction less red-rimmed.

She had not mentioned it.

She had noticed the stone the afternoon it appeared, because Lyria had kept touching her left ribs at council, lightly, absently, and Vaelith had filed that and later seen the small bulge in the inner pocket of Lyria’s tunic and understood.

She had not mentioned that either.

Now it was evening. Lyria had come for the last hour of training — breathing exercises, grounding work, the meditation that had made today’s controlled vision possible — and Lyria was sitting on the low cushion opposite her, cross-legged, looking at the floor, looking at nothing, carrying the vision still in her face, and the pressed flower was in her hair again.

Vaelith watched her without seeming to watch.

Vaelith said, conversationally: ”You seem settled today. Despite the vision.”

Lyria lifted her eyes.

The green-gold in them was really quite striking now, Vaelith thought. It had taken over what had been grey, most of the way, and the streaks in her hair — midnight black was coming in along the roots, the copper-gold receding outward toward the tips — and Vaelith had not named that either, because the girl did not yet know, and the knowing would come when Kaela was ready to give it to her, and this was not Vaelith’s story to tell.

”I found a flower,” Lyria said.

She said it slightly too casually. The way a young person said a thing when they were testing the words in the open air for the first time, to see what noise the words would make.

”Did you,” said Vaelith.

”Yes.”

A pause.

”And a stone,” Lyria said.

”How lovely,” said Vaelith. Her voice was perfectly neutral. Her face was perfectly neutral. She was a healer of many decades’ training and there was not a single muscle in her face doing anything that was not exactly what she asked it to do.

Lyria looked at her.

Lyria’s mouth opened, and then it closed.

Then Lyria said, very carefully: ”Do you know who — ”

”I’m sure I don’t,” said Vaelith.

A small silence.

Then Vaelith, very gently, with the first hint of something almost playful moving at the corner of her mouth: ”But you do, don’t you?”

Colour rose along Lyria’s cheekbones. It was a small blush, a young blush, the kind that came up in a fourteen-year-old’s face when a thing she had been holding quietly inside herself was named by someone she trusted. She did not look away. She had been doing a great deal of not-looking-away today, and it had become, apparently, a habit.

”I — ” She stopped. Tried again. ”I think I do. Yes.”

”How long have you thought so?”

”A while.”

”A while since this morning, or a while from before that?”

Lyria’s blush deepened.

”Longer than since this morning.”

”Mm.” Vaelith’s eyes were warm. ”Does it frighten you?”

Lyria considered this. She considered it the way she had learned to consider things now — carefully, with attention, the way Vaelith had taught her to hold a thought the way one held a moth on the back of the hand, lightly, without closing one’s fingers over it.

”No,” she said, and she was as surprised to hear herself say it as Vaelith was not surprised to hear it. ”I thought it would. I think I expected it to. But it doesn’t.”

”Why doesn’t it?”

”Because he — ” Another pause. The careful hold on the moth. ”Because he never asks. He’s never once asked. Not with his eyes, not with his body, not even in the way people ask things without saying them. He just — stays where he can be useful. And he leaves things. And he doesn’t look at me unless I’ve already seen him first. And he — ” Her voice caught a little. She steadied it. ”And he looks at me like I’m me. Not like I’m the Prophetess. Not like I’m the mixed-blood girl who’s supposed to mean something to the demons because her vine and her visions made her interesting. Just me. Lyria. The person who keeps forgetting where she put her boots and who laughs too loud at Zharek’s jokes and who still cries when she thinks about the valley.”

Vaelith said nothing. She was looking at Lyria with an expression that was not quite a smile but was in the neighbourhood of one, the way a mother watched a child say something the mother had been waiting years to hear.

”I am fourteen,” Lyria said, and her voice had gone quieter now, almost wondering. ”I know I am fourteen. I have counted. But I do not feel fourteen, Vaelith. I haven’t felt fourteen since the visions started. I feel — older than that. Not old. But older. And I think — ” She swallowed. ”I think the person he sees is the person I actually am. And I don’t know what to do with that. Because I have not been seen by anyone like that, ever. Not even by Papa. Not even by Mama, when she could still look at me properly.”

”Your mother loves you, child.”

”I know. But she loves her Lyria. The one she had before the visions. I don’t always know how to be that Lyria anymore.”

Vaelith nodded slowly. She did not say anything for a long moment. Then, carefully: ”You understand that what he offers, you are not obligated to take. You understand that completely.”

”Yes.”

”And you understand that he would live with whatever you decided, and would not think less of you, and would not ask you to explain yourself, and would simply adjust. Because that is what he is.”

”Yes. I know that too.”

”Good.” Vaelith’s hand moved, very briefly, as if she had thought about reaching for Lyria and then decided not to. ”Because that is the ground you are standing on. You are not being pursued. You are being offered to. Those are different things, and they feel different, and I wanted to make sure you knew which one this was.”

”I know which one this is.”

”Good.”

A pause.

”You are going to keep the flower,” Vaelith said. It was not a question.

”Yes.”

”And the stone.”

”Yes.”

”Mm.” Vaelith’s mouth did the small amused thing again. ”Then I suspect, dear heart, that a certain warrior is going to have a great deal of trouble sleeping tonight.”

Lyria laughed — a small laugh, surprised out of her, the kind of laugh that made her wings loosen without her noticing — and she put her hand over her face, and she felt the heat in her cheeks, and she did not mind any of it.

”Vaelith.”

”Mm?”

”Thank you.”

”For what?”

”For — for not pretending. I was so tired of everyone pretending.”

”Ah.” Vaelith’s eyes softened. ”No, child. In this house, we do not pretend. Not about the important things. And a warrior who has spent a long time being invisible finally allowing himself to be seen is one of the important things.”

They sat in the quiet for a while after that, and the candles burned down, and outside the window the evening was going blue at the edges, and Vaelith, without moving, without turning her head, was aware through some sense that had nothing to do with sight that Voresh was already at the perimeter. The Common Path carried such things lightly when one knew how to listen for them. He was there. He was not approaching. He was not presuming. He was standing, as he had stood every evening since they had come to Zhū’kethara, in the specific spot that was close enough to be useful and far enough to be nothing.

A man who had spent thirty thousand years learning how close he could stand to a thing without being intrusive had, at last, something worth standing near.

Vaelith did not say any of this aloud.

She only said: ”Are you ready to go back to your quarters?”

Lyria nodded.

”Sleep,” said Vaelith. ”I mean it. If the vision comes again, it comes. We’ll work with it tomorrow. Tonight you sleep.”

Lyria stood. She paused at the door.

”Vaelith — ”

”Mm?”

”Thank you. For today.”

”Always,” said Vaelith.

Lyria went.

***

She walked back to her quarters slowly.

She went past the east garden, because her quarters were in the west wing and the east garden was not on her route, but she went past it anyway, and she did not look toward the perimeter because she did not want to confirm, and she did not want to fail to confirm, and she did not know which outcome would have unsettled her more.

She did not look.

She only walked.

At her door she paused again, and then went in, and she lit her candle, and she took off her outer tunic and hung it on the peg, and she took the stone from the inner pocket and held it in her palm for a while in the candle-light, turning it, watching the silver-white patterns catch the flame.

On the bedside table, the book lay where she had left it. She opened it to the pressed flower. She looked at the flower for a moment. Then she closed the book, and she placed the stone on top of it, and she blew the candle out.

In the dark, she lay on her back with her wings folded under her and her hands on her chest.

She let herself think about him.

She had not let herself do that — not properly, not deliberately, not in the way she was doing it now. She had let him exist at the edge of her attention, a warm shape at the perimeter, a presence that made rooms feel a little safer without her understanding precisely why. She had not looked directly at what he was becoming to her. She had been fourteen and afraid of what it would mean to look directly.

She looked now.

She thought about his copper eyes. The way they warmed, even when the rest of his face did not. The way he never stared at her, never tracked her across a room in the way demons did when they were working out whether she was a threat, but always — always — knew where she was. She had felt it for months. The quiet certainty of being watched-over without being watched-at.

She thought about his hands. The careful hands. The hands that had placed a flower on her ledge at an hour when she would not see him do it. The hands that had carved a stone — her rune’s light carved into stone, which meant he had been looking at her rune when it glowed, which meant he had seen her in her power, seen her in the state most of the adults around her could not look at without flinching. He had looked. He had memorised. He had put it in her palm.

She thought about the way he stood at the perimeter. Far enough not to presume. Close enough to come if she cried out. She had understood, for weeks now, that this was his doing. She had not let herself understand what it meant. She let herself understand now. It meant he considered her worth standing near. It meant he had arranged his life around being where she might need him, without asking her to notice, without asking her to thank him, without asking anything.

It meant he was courting her. In his quiet way. In his demon way. The way that never asked.

And she —

And I am letting him.

She felt the admission settle somewhere in the centre of her chest, warm and frightening and true.

I have been letting him for weeks. I just hadn’t said it to myself yet.

She thought about who he saw, when he looked at her. Not the Prophetess. Vaelith had been right about that, and Lyria had been right to tell her so, but now that the words had been said aloud they were doing a different thing — they were true in a way that meant something, not just a true thing about him but a true thing about her. He saw Lyria. Not the vine-bearer. Not the mixed-blood child the demons had crossed eight thousand years of silence to recognise. Not the prophetic weapon a king could deploy. Lyria. A fourteen-year-old who had lived too many lifetimes in the last year, who still mended her little brother’s tunics when she was home, who laughed too loudly at Zharek’s jokes because Zharek’s jokes genuinely surprised her, who missed the valley and the purple flowers that grew there and her mother’s voice before it had gone careful with pain.

That girl. The one she actually was.

He saw her.

I have been fourteen for a while, and it has not felt like fourteen for most of it. The visions made me old in one part and kept me young in another and neither part fits properly anymore. But he looks at me and he sees both. He doesn’t flinch at the old part and he doesn’t patronise the young part. He just — sees.

I don’t know what to do with that.

No. That’s not true. I do know. I just don’t know yet how to do it, and I am going to have to learn, and Vaelith is right — there is no hurry. He is not asking me to know yet.

She shifted in the bed. The stone and the flower pressed together on the table beside her. She could not see them in the dark but she knew exactly where they were.

The Temple pipeline was still in her. The uniformed children were still in her. The snub-nosed girl walking down the ramp holding the attendant’s hand was still in her, and Ren’s voice — every child we don’t save today is a life I carry — was still in her, and all of it was going to be there when she woke up, and all of it was going to be there for a long time.

But tonight, in the dark, with a carved stone on top of a pressed flower on the table beside her, she was not carrying it alone.

She knew she was not carrying it alone.

And she had, quietly, in her own time and on her own terms, decided that she was going to let that be true.

Outside, at the perimeter, a man with copper eyes stood watch.

The Vor’kesh at his throat bore five green strands and the faintest curl of a sixth beginning. He could not have named the reason he was weeping, quietly, without moving, his face turned up toward the dark — the eastern stars, the thin slice of moon, the candle in her window going dark. He did not need to name it. He had spent thirty thousand years not knowing how to weep, and tonight his body had remembered without asking permission, and he let it, and he did not wipe his face.

Somewhere between them, in the shortening distance between a girl who had allowed herself to be seen and a man who had spent thirty thousand years learning how to see her, the thread of the thing that was going to last — if it was going to last — began, quietly, to form its first knot.

She knew.

He knew.

They had not said it to each other. They would not need to for a long time yet.

The flower was pressed. The stone was carved. The watch was kept.

That, tonight, was enough.
