Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 347: Chapter 342: The Calculus

Location:Zhū’kethara, Demon Realm

Date/Time:Late Emberwane, 9939 AZI

Realm:Demon Realm

The bell rang once.

It was not a loud bell. It was a small brass thing that Vaelith kept on the low table between them, etched with a Shan’keth spiral along its lip, and it rang with the kind of sound that didn’t travel — a sound that went inward rather than outward, the way a question went inward when you were the only one who could answer it. One clear note. Then stillness.

”When you’re ready,” Vaelith said.

Lyria breathed in. Breathed out. The brazier in the corner made a soft sound, coals settling, and she noticed the sound the way she noticed everything now — filed and then let go. She had been taught to let things go. For months. Sit still. Notice. Let go. She had hated every minute of it at the beginning, because fourteen and furious did not want to sit still, and the visions she wanted to reach for had been reaching for her in the wrong hours, in the wrong places, seizing her without warning until Vaelith had said we are going to teach your gift to knock before entering.

It had knocked today. She had answered.

She would choose when.

She would choose what.

She reached.

***

The world unfolded.

Not a violent unfolding — she had learned to soften the edges of it, to step through rather than be dragged. The walls of the meditation chamber became thinner, and then transparent, and then they were gone, and she was standing in a hall that was not a hall so much as an idea of a hall: white stone, high ceilings, morning light pouring through tall windows in long clean shafts. Everything was polished. Everything smelled of sandalwood and something underneath the sandalwood that she couldn’t name yet.

Children.

In rows. Small, straight-backed, hands folded at their waists the way a Temple trained hands to be folded. They wore white tunics with a single copper trim at the cuffs. They were perhaps six years old. Perhaps seven. One of them had a tooth missing. Another was trying very hard not to smile because she had been taught that smiling in processional indicated disrespect, and she had been taught this thoroughly, because her whole face was working to hold the smile down.

A woman in gold and white walked at the head of the line. She was beautiful. Her voice carried the soft lilt of the Mid Realm priestesses, and she was saying, you have been chosen, you have been blessed, the Flame has seen you and marked you worthy, and the children were glowing. Not literally. The way children glowed when a beloved adult looked at them and said yes, you, I see you.

Lyria stepped sideways through the vision.

She had learned to do this, too. You could not just look. Looking was the surface. The surface was often the lie.

She stepped through a wall.

The wall was not a wall.

Behind it, there was a room she did not understand at first, because she had never seen a room like it. An examination chamber. The same children, or children who looked just like them, were being brought in one by one. Each child stood on a small dais while a robed priest passed a polished disc over them — the disc glowed when it neared certain parts of the body, brightest over the heart, dimmer elsewhere — and a scribe at a low desk wrote numbers on a long roll of paper.

At the top of the paper were two columns. Yield potential.Disposition.

Not potential. Yield. The word used for harvests. For crops.

The dispositions were three letters. A.B.C.

The A children got a small brass pin on the collar and a cup of something sweet and went back to the processional hall with the priestess who had called them chosen. The B children got a different pin — the same shape but unpainted — and went back a different way. The C children — the ones whose discs had barely lit at all — got no pin. They were walked, quietly, through a door at the far end of the chamber.

The door only opened one way.

There was no sorting chamber on the other side of that door. No gentle room. No cup of something warm. Lyria followed one of them through — a small girl, maybe six, with a snub nose and a birthmark at her jaw, who was holding the hand of the attendant and trusting and looking around with the particular careful curiosity of a child who had been told she was being taken somewhere wonderful.

Lyria did not want to see what was on the other side.

She made herself look anyway.

It was a corridor. The corridor went down. Not metaphorically — it sloped, a gentle ramp, worn smooth by the feet of many children who had walked it. At the bottom of the ramp was a second set of doors, and behind those doors was a room Lyria’s eyes refused for one long moment to understand, because the shape of what was happening in it did not fit into any frame her fourteen years had given her for what adults did with children.

She saw enough. She did not see all of it. The vision was kind, or perhaps her own gift was kind, and it pulled her backward before the full image landed — but she saw the copper vats, and she saw the attendants in leather aprons, and she saw the smell of it rising, and she understood — the way a body understood a thing before a mind had words for it — that the children who walked down that ramp did not walk back up. That what they were, their essence, the small warm bright thing they had been carrying around inside their six-year-old bodies, was extracted in a process that did not care about keeping them alive.

The pills were distilled suffering.

She had known this already, in the abstract, from before. From the long vision, the one the village had watched her survive with blood coming out of her nose — the future vision, the one about Sharlin, the one about the 800,000, the one about what was coming. She had known, in her mind, that this was how the pills were made.

She had never before seen the door. The ramp. The snub-nosed girl with the birthmark, trusting, being walked down.

Lyria staggered in the vision. Vaelith’s voice — somewhere, distant, patient — said, breathe, Lyria. Stay with it. See the whole shape.

She breathed. She stayed.

She saw the whole shape.

The hall of processional, where children were selected and made proud. The examination chamber, where children were sorted by letter. The A children — the best yielders — kept for later. Longer cycles. Full extraction scheduled but deferred, because the finer grades of pill came from fuller essence, and fuller essence came from children who had been allowed to mature a little. The B children — fed into the cycle now, smaller yield, faster turnover. The C children — the ones whose yield was too low to justify the cycle — walked down the ramp the same week they arrived.

None of them walked back up.

Past the rooms: the distribution chain. Copper-sealed crates moving by night along certified Temple routes to the Upper Realm. Pills in small lacquered boxes. Priests blessing the boxes before shipping. Merchants receiving them at checkpoints. Upper Realm nobles, some of them very old, some of them only middle-aged but beginning to feel the drag of years, taking one pill, then another, then another, over a decade, and walking straighter and laughing louder and calling the thing that made it possible a sacred medicine, blessed by the Flame, the Temple’s most holy gift.

None of the nobles knew.

Some of them did not want to know.

This was old. Older than she had wanted it to be. Not all of it industrial — for generations it had been small, dozens a year, carefully framed as tragedy, the unlucky children who had not survived their training, attributed to the demanding nature of early cultivation. Nobody had counted. Nobody had been permitted to count. The Temple owned the academies and the Temple owned the records, and the Temple owned the stories told about the children who had come so close to being chosen.

And now — Lyria understood this at the edge of the vision, a flicker, the kind of information the Sight delivered as a certainty rather than an image — now there were academies scattered across the Mid Realm, many more than she could count in a single pass of the Sight, each one quietly, carefully, continuously operating. Feeding the pipeline. Producing the pills. And someone — she saw the edge of a woman’s pale blue sleeve, she saw a room with charts on the walls, she saw a set of quotas being revised upward — someone was preparing to expand it. To scale it. To take the dozens a year and make it thousands. To take the Temple academies and make them Temple regions.

The expansion she had Seen before.

This was the baseline. The thing being expanded from.

And all of it — all of it — was happening right now.

Today. This morning. While she was sitting on Vaelith’s cushion. The snub-nosed girl had walked down the ramp this morning. The A children had been pinned and praised this morning. The Upper Realm nobles had taken their pills with breakfast this morning.

Every moment she sat here, another child walked down.

She pulled out.

***

”Lyria.”

Her forehead was cold. Her forehead was wet. Her hands were pressed against the low table so hard that the wood was cutting into the heels of her palms, and the silver prophetic rune at the centre of her forehead was blazing — she could feel the heat of it, the outward push, the light pouring off her like it had to go somewhere or it was going to go through her skin.

”Lyria.”

Vaelith was in front of her. Close. Not touching. One of the first rules Vaelith had taught her: I do not touch you coming out of a vision unless you ask. Your body belongs to you even when it’s full of other things.

”Here,” Vaelith said. ”You’re here. Zhū’kethara. My chamber. The brazier is lit. The tea is still warm. You’re fourteen. You’re safe. Your wings are behind you. Your mother loved you. Name three things you can hear.”

Lyria tried to speak and made a sound that was not words.

”Three things,” Vaelith said again, quiet, absolute.

”The — the coals,” Lyria whispered.

”One.”

”Your — your voice.”

”Two.”

”My — my heart.” She laughed, and the laugh broke in the middle. ”It’s loud.”

”Three.” Vaelith let her breath out. ”Good. Good, child. That’s the work.”

Lyria unfolded her hands from the table. Her palms had gone white. She flexed them and watched the blood come back. Her wings — pale grey gossamer, silver iridescence where the light caught — were folded flat to her back, and they were vibrating faintly, the way a bowstring vibrated after release.

The rune on her forehead dimmed.

She looked up at Vaelith. Vaelith’s eyes — green-gold, the Shan’keth vine at her brow gleaming — were patient. Not surprised. Not horrified. Patient, the way a teacher’s eyes were patient when a student had just done something difficult and was about to understand that they had done something difficult.

”I saw a place,” Lyria said. Her voice came out flatter than she meant it to. ”I need to tell Ren.”

”You saw a specific place?”

”A Temple academy. Southern Mid Realm, near the Lower border — I can find the exact position with Vaelith later, I saw the terrain.” Lyria was speaking faster now. Clinical, in a way that was not her own cadence but was becoming hers. ”It’s one of many. Scattered across the Mid Realm. Same protocol in all of them. Children are assessed on arrival — they call it talent screening, it looks like Kindling Day, but it isn’t. It’s a yield sort. They classify into three tiers. The low tier goes into the extraction cycle within days. The middle tier is kept for faster cycling. The top tier is — fattened, I don’t have a better word. Allowed to mature. Extracted later for higher-grade pills.” She stopped. Started again. ”The extraction kills them. It’s — grinding. They take the whole child. That’s what the pills are made of. I saw the door. I didn’t make myself see past it.”

She stopped.

She had started crying without noticing. Not loudly. Tears were just running, and her voice was still working, and she had not registered the one with the other.

Vaelith did not reach for her. Vaelith only said, very softly: ”Let me get Ren.”

+++

He came quickly.

He did not waste time on questions in the corridor. Vaelith had reached him through the Common Path — the lightest touch, the kind a healer used when her message was simple and her request was now: the Prophetess Saw. That was enough. Ren arrived in five minutes with his cloak still on, purple eyes dark with the particular attention he reserved for things that mattered, and he sat on the floor of Vaelith’s meditation chamber across from Lyria because she had not yet moved from her cushion, and he was not going to ask her to.

”Tell me,” he said.

She told him.

She told him cleanly. She was still crying in the beginning, and then she was not, because the telling required a different part of her than the feeling. She delivered facts. Numbers. The names of the tiers. The count of academies. The distribution routes. The shape of the pipeline from talent screening to sealed crates moving north.

Ren listened without interrupting.

When she was finished, he was quiet for a long moment.

Then he said: ”Thank you. That took courage to deliver like that.”

”I didn’t deliver it like anything.” Her voice was tight. ”I just said what I saw.”

”You said what you saw in a way we can use.” He looked at her. ”That’s the difference between a vision and intelligence. You’ve started doing the second one. Lyria — that’s hard. It’s harder than the first one. I’m telling you that so you know.”

She blinked at him.

She had expected a lot of things. She had not expected to be told she had done something hard and done it well. Her mouth went a little wobbly and then steadied.

”We have to do something,” she said.

”Yes.”

”When?”

Ren closed his eyes. He was sitting cross-legged on the chamber floor in a position that no demon king in any tapestry would have been depicted in, and his elbows were resting on his knees, and he pressed the heels of his hands against his eyes for a moment as though he could press the image back inside them.

When he opened them, they were level again.

”Not yet.”

Lyria’s wings snapped half-open behind her. It was involuntary. They did it when her body was about to say no. Vaelith, in the corner, did not look. Gave her the privacy of the reaction.

”Not yet,” Lyria said.

”Lyria — ”

”There are children dying, Ren. Right now. While we sit here. There was a girl — she was six, Ren — ”

”I know.”

”She walked down the ramp, and she didn’t come back up.”

”I know.”

Ren’s voice was not raised. It did not need to be. It carried the weight of a king who had already done this particular arithmetic in the dark hours, alone, many times, and was doing it again now, with her. He took a breath.

”Lyria, listen to me. Please. I’m not telling you no. I’m telling you not yet. There is a difference, and if I don’t explain it to you clearly, you are going to hate me for the wrong reason, and I would like you to hate me for the correct one if hating me becomes necessary.”

Her wings trembled. They did not fold.

He said:

”Lyria. I need you to understand what we are and what we are not.

”We are eight million demons. Just over. That is the whole of us — every adult, every warrior, every healer, every elder. Eight million, and not one of them was born in the last eight thousand years. That is what is left of a people who once numbered nine hundred million. That is a wound we are still bleeding from, and we have been bleeding from it for longer than your people remember the word demon.”

”The Radiant Realm has over a hundred million souls. Not warriors — souls. Before you count their standing army. Before you count the militias, the Temple could raise inside of a week if they declared holy war on us. More than a hundred million.”

He let that sit in the air.

”A single demon warrior can stand against twenty humans, thirty of the lesser ones, and in some of our old lines, rather more than that. That is not pride. That is biology. But, Lyria — math is math. They have fifteen of them for every one of us. If we go to open war with the Radiant Realm tomorrow, we do not survive it. We kill millions of them on the way down, and we still do not survive it. A warrior of mine can stand against twenty. He cannot stand against a thousand.”

Her wings had folded flat, without her noticing.

”Second,” Ren said. ”The Temple is their faith. It is not an institution to them. It is not a government. It is what they pray to when their own people are sick, and what they thank when the harvest comes in, and what they turn to when someone they love dies. If I move openly against the Temple without proof — proof they cannot deny, proof so public and so damning that even the faithful cannot look away from it — I have not attacked a corrupt power structure. I have attacked their gods. And every human in the Radiant Realm, every Mid Realm trader, every lord who has never met a demon, becomes a soldier in the race war I just started. And then we are back to the math in the first point. Fifteen of them for every one of us. My warriors dying. My healers dying. The mixed-blood settlements we brought under our protection, burning. And the Temple walks away from it.”

A long breath.

”Third.”

He was not looking at her now. He was looking at the floor between them — not to avoid her, she could tell. To avoid making her carry the thing he was about to say on top of what she was already carrying.

”Every time one of my warriors kills, he takes a step toward the devil form.”

Lyria’s head came up.

”I — I knew the devil form was — ”

”The devil form is what happens to us when our soul’s beast dies. Our males, specifically. Every kill costs us. Most of our warriors can absorb many before anything starts to show. Some can absorb a great many. But right now, Lyria — right now — I have warriors who have been carrying the kills of eight thousand years, and more. I have veterans of the Third Zartonesh War who have not fought a battle since it ended and who are still, even in peacetime, even in daylight, close. I know where every one of them stands and I can tell you which of them would not survive a single major engagement with the Radiant Realm’s forces. The cost is not casualties. The cost is my own warriors turning into the thing our clans have feared since before the Sundering.”

Her hand had gone to her mouth.

”Voresh,” she said, very small.

”Voresh is healing. Voresh is healing because of you. Voresh is one of the only pieces of good news I have on that particular front, and he is, despite everything, still within reach of a hard season. If I send him into a war tomorrow — if I send any of them into a war tomorrow — I lose men I cannot replace, and I lose them to a fate worse than the grave. Our bones we can bury. A devil we have to hunt down and put to the sword, and even then, the soul is gone forever. The Condex takes no devils back.”

Lyria was not crying now. She had gone still the way a young person went still when she was understanding something that was not going to go away.

”Fourth,” Ren said.

”The Zartonesh will come again. Under a hundred years from now, Lyria — and for us, that is tomorrow. That is barely long enough to finish training the warriors we have. My veterans of the Third War will be there. Voresh will be there. I will be there. The warriors I burn in a war with the Temple today are the same warriors we need standing at the gate when the Fourth invasion comes. The demon realm has always been the front line. That is why we lost nine hundred million. If I send our forces to die in the Radiant Realm now, I hand the Fourth Invasion a front with no one standing at it. And that invasion will not stop at us. The last one did not. It burned through the demon realm first because we were in the way. After us, it would have reached for everything else, and the only reason there is still a Doha to be fought over is that the demons of that generation burned themselves to ashes holding the gate.”

He looked up at her again.

”I am not going to be the king who hands the next generation a realm with no warriors in it.”

Silence.

The brazier in the corner shifted, coals settling, and Vaelith did not move.

”Fifth,” Ren said.

”And this is the one I have not told anyone outside my inner circle, Lyria, and I am telling you because you have earned it, and because I need you to understand why yet is the word I am using and not no.

”There are demons still held. In the pocket dimensions. Our people. Women mostly — the ones taken in the Healing Tent Massacre and in the other kidnappings that got blamed on the Zartonesh, and their daughters, and their daughters’ daughters, born into captivity, raised in captivity, used for breeding and for experiments and for whatever Symkyn and the Temple apothecaries have needed across long years of quiet work. We do not know how many. Vaelith’s census of the bloodlines on the surface tells us the number is large. Large enough that I will not say it aloud until I have a plan that can free them.

”The moment I move on the Temple, Lyria — the moment they know we are coming — those captives are in mortal danger. The people who took them and held them for eight thousand years will not let them be taken back. They will cut losses rather than let us find what they have been doing. Serathi d’Sorn knew this when she died. Her last words to the ones she saved were hide, never let Sharlin find you. That warning still stands. Those captives live because the Temple does not yet believe we know. The day the Temple believes we know is the day our own people — our grandmothers, our aunts, our cousins we have never met — are in cells we cannot reach with time running out faster than we can move.”

His voice caught, once, on the word grandmothers. He got it steady again.

”So I cannot attack. I cannot even openly investigate. I can only build, and gather, and wait, and quietly assemble the pieces that will let us bring the Temple down from the inside — with proof that strips their faith from them rather than hardens it around them, with an operation that extracts our captives first and then the evidence second, with allies placed where the Radiant Realm’s own people will tear the Temple apart once they know what it has been doing to their own human children, and to the mixed-bloods we call kin.”

He looked at her.

”That is the plan. It is the only plan that leaves us, and them, and our captives, and the next generation, and the realm against the Zartonesh, alive. It is a very slow plan. It costs us, in children not yet saved, every day I do not move. I know what that costs, Lyria. I keep a count. I do not let myself look at the number, but I keep it.”

A long breath.

”That is why yet.”

The silence that followed had weight.

Vaelith, in her corner, was not looking at either of them. She was holding the brass bell in her lap. Her thumb was moving slowly over the Shan’keth spiral along its rim, the way a mother’s thumb might move over a child’s forehead.

Lyria lowered her wings.

It took her several breaths to do it. She put her face in her hands for a moment, and then she took her hands down, and her eyes — green and gold, vivid in a way that was still settling into her face — were wet but steady.

”When?” she said.

”When we can move without losing everything we’ve built.”

”How long?”

”I don’t know yet.”

Lyria nodded. It was not a nod of agreement. It was the nod of someone who had heard and understood and was not going to pretend she had also accepted.

”I hate this,” she said.

”Good,” said Ren. ”If you stop hating it, tell me. I’ll take the vision work off you for a while. You’re allowed to hate it. You’re not allowed to stop hating it. That is the line.”

She looked up at him.

”I’m working on it,” he said. ”Every day. I promise you that.”

”Every day?”

”Every day. Sometimes for hours. Sometimes I only get ten minutes before the next crisis. But every day, Lyria. There is a plan. It has moving pieces. I cannot tell you all of them yet. But it is being built, and when it is ready — ”

”I want to help build it.”

He blinked at her.

It was a small blink. The kind of blink a king gave when a fourteen-year-old had just said something that had, quietly, rearranged his assumptions about what she was and what she was going to become.

”All right,” he said.

”All right?”

”All right. We’ll find you pieces of it. Real pieces. Not make-work.”

She looked at him hard to see if he was humouring her. He was not humouring her. The purple of his eyes was the dark of decision, and she relaxed by some fraction.

”Thank you,” she said.

”Thank you,” said Ren. ”For what you just did. I mean that, Lyria. Not the polite version. The real one.”

She nodded.

He rose to leave. At the door, he paused, half-turned, and said to Vaelith without quite looking at her: ”How is she?”

Vaelith said: ”She is fourteen and she just saw a thing no one should have to see, and she reported it like a general. She will not sleep well tonight. She did well.”

Ren nodded once. Then he was gone.
