Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 315: Chapter 310: The Family

Location:Obsidian Academy → Nexus Pavilion

Date/Time:Early Cinderfall, 9939 AZI — Evening

Realm:Lower Realm / Pavilion Sub-space

The common room was warm.

Not artificially warm — the Pavilion’s warmth was organic, something that lived in the walls and the light and the lived-in quality of air that a pocket dimension produced when it had been inhabited by people who cared about each other. It smelled of Green’s tea — always Green’s tea, a blend she’d been perfecting for eight thousand years — and of weapon oil from White’s corner, and of the faintly metallic tang that Reiko’s fur left on every surface he brushed against.

Home. That’s what it smelled like. Jayde hadn’t had a word for it until she’d lived here long enough to realise that the absence of fear had a scent.

”Wait here,” she told Eden. ”I’ll bring them.”

”You’re going to introduce me to your interdimensional family one at a time? Like a lineup?”

”Like people who matter to me. And who I’d like to not terrify.”

”I’m five-foot-two, and I weigh forty-eight kilos. I don’t terrify anyone.”

”You terrified the entire Xi Corp biowarfare division for thirty years.”

”That was professional. This is personal.” Eden smoothed her hair — the practical knot, dark brown, tied back the way she’d worn it in every life. ”How do I look?”

”Like a malnourished village healer.”

”Perfect.”

***

Yinxin came first.

She entered the common room in human form — golden eyes, 5’10”, silver-white hair that fell straight and heavy to her waist. She moved with a grace that spoke of a being who had spent millennia in a body built for flight and had learned to translate that precision into human movement. Every step deliberate. Every gesture carrying the weight of inherited queen memories that stretched back further than recorded history.

She saw Eden.

Eden saw her.

Two women — one who carried the accumulated wisdom of every silver dragon queen who had ever lived, and one who carried ninety years of Federation medical science and the dogged stubbornness of someone who had built a time machine — assessed each other in the space of three heartbeats.

What Yinxin saw: a small woman. Smaller than Jayde. Blue eyes that missed nothing. Hands that hung at her sides with the disciplined stillness of someone trained to hold still under pressure. And the way Jayde stood near her — close, genuinely close, with her guard down in a way Yinxin had never seen outside the Pavilion. The emotional wall that Jayde maintained between herself and everyone who wasn’t family was simply... absent.

”So you’re the one who makes her laugh.” Not a question. Yinxin’s golden eyes carried the weight of that observation — she’d watched Jayde for months. The girl laughed for her family. She laughed for Reiko’s clumsiness, Green’s fussing, and the wyrmlings’ chaos. But Yinxin had never seen a quality of laughter that Eden produced — the deep kind, the kind that started somewhere behind the ribs and climbed.

Eden met those golden eyes without flinching. ”She makes it easy when she’s not being impossible.”

Yinxin’s mouth curved. A fraction. The expression of a three-thousand-year-old dragon queen who had just heard something that confirmed a suspicion she’d been holding for weeks.

”She is always impossible. That’s why we love her.”

(She said ’we.’ She said ’we love her.’ In front of Doc.)

Social integration proceeding faster than projected. Yinxin has categorised Eden as inside the trust perimeter based on observed behavioral cues alone. The oath was confirmation. This is acceptance.

Eden extended her hand. ”I’m Eden. Or Eba, if you prefer. I’ve been told you’re significant.”

Yinxin took it. Her grip was careful — not weak, but measured, the grip of someone who could shatter stone and chose not to. ”Yinxin. And ’significant’ is one word for it.” A pause. ”She’ll tell you the rest when she’s ready.”

”I assumed there was a rest.”

”There is always a rest, with her.”

***

Green came next.

She appeared in the doorway carrying a tray — because of course she did. Green’s response to any situation, whether it was a mortal wound or an emotional crisis or a new person in the family, was to produce food and warmth and the specific, non-negotiable certainty that everybody was going to sit down and eat something.

Fractured emerald eyes swept Eden from head to feet. The assessment took less than a second — eight thousand years of healing had given Green the ability to read a body’s history in the way it moved, the way it held weight, the way its hands rested at its sides.

”You’re too thin.”

Eden blinked. ”I’ve been told.”

”Sit down. I’ll make tea.”

”I’m already sitting—”

”You’ll sit better when you have tea.” Green set the tray down. Teapot. Cups. Small dishes of something that smelled of ginger and honey and a faint medicinal sweetness that Green’s recipes always carried — food that healed without announcing it. ”When did you last eat a full meal? And I don’t mean the Academy’s idea of a full meal. I mean actual nutrition.”

Eden opened her mouth. Closed it. Opened it again. The expression on her face was one Jayde recognised from the Meridian — the look of a grown woman being outmanoeuvred by a force of nature disguised as maternal concern.

”She’s worse than the field nurses on the Meridian,” Eden said to Jayde.

”She’s worse than everything on the Meridian.”

Green poured tea without acknowledging either of them. Set a cup in front of Eden. Set a plate of food beside it. The motions carried the absolute authority of a woman who had been keeping people alive for eighty centuries and was not going to stop because someone claimed they weren’t hungry.

”Eat,” Green said. ”Then we’ll talk.”

Eden ate. She didn’t have a choice. Nobody had a choice when Green decided they needed feeding. It was one of the fundamental laws of the Pavilion — gravity pulled downward, light moved at a constant speed, and Green’s patients ate when Green said eat.

Jayde watched Eden take the first bite and saw something shift in her face — the expression of someone who hadn’t realised how hungry they were until food appeared. Five years of Doha frontier cooking. Years of rationing before that. The malnourished frame that Green had identified in a glance wasn’t carelessness — it was the body of a woman who had been surviving, not living, for longer than she cared to count.

Green saw it too. Her green eyes softened — not pity, never pity. Understanding. The understanding of a healer who recognised damage and had already begun planning the repair.

”Good girl,” Green murmured. And that was that. Eden had been adopted.

***

White entered the room the way White entered every room — silently, completely, with the understated certainty of a six-foot-eight mountain of scarred muscle and white hair who had been the most feared combat instructor in the Pavilion for longer than most nations had existed.

He didn’t speak.

Steel grey eyes found Eden. Made a single sweep — head to feet and back. Not hostile. Not warm. ASSESSING. The same sweep Jayde had seen him make a thousand times in training — the instant, comprehensive evaluation of a being’s structural integrity, combat capability, threat potential, and fundamental character, compressed into a look that lasted less than two seconds.

He nodded. Once.

Then he moved to his usual spot — the chair by the eastern wall, positioned where he could see every entrance and most of the room. He sat. He accepted the tea Green handed him without acknowledgment, because Green always handed him tea, and the absence of acknowledgment WAS the acknowledgment.

He said nothing.

Eden watched him settle. Turned to Jayde. Pitched her voice low — but not low enough, because nothing in this room was low enough to escape White’s hearing.

”Should I be concerned that the enormous scarred man just evaluated me like a weapon?”

”That was a compliment. He didn’t dismiss you.”

”What does dismissal look like?”

”He leaves. You never see him again.”

Eden looked at White. White did not look back. He sipped his tea with the methodical patience of a man who had perfected the art of appearing uninvolved while cataloguing every sound in the room.

”I’ll take the nod,” Eden said.

Reiko arrived with the subtlety of an avalanche.

He came through the common room doorway at speed — lion-sized, silver-black fur rippling, mercury rune pulsing faintly on his forehead — and the room’s dimensions seemed to contract around his presence. Reiko in the Pavilion was not the shadow-melded companion who trotted beside Jayde at the Academy. Here, he was HIMSELF. Full manifestation. The primordial shadowbeast who had merged his core with a dying girl’s in a Luminari Harmony Chamber and come out the other side as something that made the air hum.

He stopped in front of Eden. Silver eyes fixed on her with the unwavering focus of a predator who had decided not to be predatory but wanted you to know it was a choice.

Through the bond: [She smells like the outside. Like ink and healing herbs and that bread they sell near the eastern gate.]

”Reiko says you smell like bread.”

Eden looked up — and UP, because Reiko’s shoulder was level with her head — at the massive beast whose silver eyes reflected her face in miniature. ”That’s... detailed.”

[Also acceptable. She is acceptable.]

”He also says you’re acceptable.”

”I’ve received warmer endorsements.”

[What more does she want? Acceptable is high praise. I don’t say that about most humans. Most humans smell like panic and bad decisions.]

”He wants you to know that ’acceptable’ is apparently high praise.”

Reiko sat. The floor vibrated slightly. He was still staring at Eden with that unblinking focus — not threatening, but thorough. She was inside the family space. She’d passed the oath. His human had chosen her.

[She’s small,] Reiko observed. [You collect small things. Green is small. The kitten is small. Now this one. Why are your allies always small?]

”He’s editorialising about your height.”

”I’m five-foot-two. That’s average for—”

[Below average. Significantly.]

”He disagrees.”

Eden reached out one hand. Slowly — the gesture of someone approaching an unfamiliar animal, though the being in front of her was as far from an unfamiliar animal as a star was from a candle. Her fingers stopped an inch from Reiko’s muzzle.

Reiko sniffed. Considered. Pressed his nose against her palm — brief, warm, the consent of a creature who could have dissolved her hand into shadow and chose instead to allow the contact.

[Bread,] he confirmed. [Definitely bread.]

”Dr. Shishido Eba.” Isha’s voice came from everywhere. Not a single source — the walls, the ceiling, the light itself. The Pavilion speaking through its own architecture. ”Welcome to my home. I trust the accommodations exceed the Academy courtyard.”

Eden startled — less than she had during the Soul Oath, but the full immersion of Isha’s voice inside his own domain was a different experience from the courtyard manifestation. Here, he wasn’t visiting. He was AMBIENT.

”By approximately three civilisational epochs, yes.”

”Generous estimate. I’d say four.”

”Is he always like this?” Eden asked Jayde.

”Always. He’s been waiting hundreds of thousands of years for someone who appreciates his architecture.”

”I am the architecture,” Isha clarified. His voice carried warmth — genuine warmth, the kind that came from a being who had spent aeons as a tool and had been given a name by a girl in a cave. ”Everything you see, I maintain. Everything you feel, I provide. The temperature, the light, the resonance — all of it, managed by a single consciousness across a dimensional substrate that your scientific mind is, I suspect, already trying to model.”

”I’ve been trying since I walked in. I’ve failed three times.”

”Good. The day someone succeeds, I’ll worry.” A pause. ”I like her already,” Isha said to Jayde.

(He said it out loud. He never says things like that out loud.)

Noted. Isha is performing social integration. Deliberate inclusion signal directed at Eden.

(Or he just likes her.)

Also possible.

The wyrmlings found Eden before Eden found the wyrmlings.

A crash from the corridor — metallic, followed by a sound that was half squeal and half battle cry — preceded Tianxin’s entrance by approximately two seconds. The eldest wyrmling burst through the doorway in a streak of silver scales and misplaced ambition, skidded across the common room floor, and collided with Eden’s legs.

Then she looked up. Small silver face. Eyes bright with an intensity that said this creature who had decided that everything in the universe existed to be investigated, and this new person was next.

Tianxin took a breath.

”Wait—” Jayde started.

Too late. The wyrmling opened her jaws and breathed fire.

It went sideways. It always went sideways — Tianxin’s fire control was enthusiastic but architecturally questionable. The small formation array in the common room wall caught the errant flame, absorbed it with the practised efficiency of a system that had been catching Tianxin’s misfires for months, and converted it to a brief pulse of warmth.

Nobody flinched. This was just another day.

Eden, sitting on the floor with a wyrmling between her knees and the faint scent of singed air in her hair, looked at Jayde with an expression of profound scientific interest.

”Did she just breathe fire at me?”

”She does that. It’s a greeting.”

”The lateral deviation on the emission vector suggests underdeveloped palatal control. If the formation arrays weren’t catching the overflow—”

”She’d have set the common room on fire. Again. Tianxin.” Jayde’s voice carried the patient authority of someone who had this conversation daily. ”What did Green say about fire indoors?”

Tianxin chirped. The chirp carried no remorse whatsoever.

Shenxin appeared in the doorway three seconds later — cautious, calculating, his small silver head tracking the scene with the analytical focus of a wyrmling who watched his sister’s mistakes and learned from them. He didn’t enter the room. He assessed. He circled — once, twice — and then padded to the edge of the group and sat, watching Eden with an evaluative stillness that was startlingly White-like for a creature smaller than a house cat.

Huaxin came last. The youngest wyrmling emerged from behind Yinxin’s legs — slow, tentative, her lavender-tinted frill pressed flat against her neck. She didn’t approach Eden directly. She positioned herself where she could see the new person without being seen, and she watched.

Then she crept closer. One step. Two. Three.

She stopped beside Eden’s knee. Tilted her head. And made a sound — soft, musical, a trill that had nothing to do with fire and everything to do with a quality of perception that Yinxin couldn’t name but recognised in her youngest daughter.

Eden went very still. The scientist’s stillness — the instinct that said DON’T MOVE when something rare and precious comes close enough to touch.

Huaxin pressed her small head against Eden’s hand. Once. Brief. Then retreated to Yinxin’s legs without looking back.

”That’s Huaxin,” Jayde said quietly. ”She doesn’t do that with strangers.”

Eden looked at her hand. At the warm spot where a baby dragon had touched her. Her blue eyes were doing something complicated.

”Juvenile silver dragons,” she said. Her voice wasn’t steady. ”You have juvenile silver dragons. In your soul.”

”In the Pavilion. Which is in my soul. Yes.”

Eden sat very still for a long time.

”Commander.” Her voice was measured. Controlled. The voice of a woman who was assembling a very large picture from a very large number of impossible pieces. ”Your impossible life is significantly more impossible than advertised.”

”I did warn you.”

”You said ’complicated operations.’ This is not an operation. This is an entire theatre of war with dragons.”
