Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 316: Chapter 311: What She Was

Location:Obsidian Academy → Nexus Pavilion

Date/Time:Early Cinderfall, 9939 AZI — Evening

Realm:Lower Realm / Pavilion Sub-space

The evening settled.

Not planned — organic. The way families settle, when the initial energy of something new gives way to the quiet comfort of people choosing to be in the same room. Green’s tea had been refreshed twice. The wyrmlings had arranged themselves in their customary configuration — Tianxin draped across Reiko’s back, her small body rising and falling with his breathing. Shenxin curled in the warm curve of Reiko’s belly, one eye open, watching. Huaxin had migrated — slowly, with the careful increments of a creature who didn’t want anyone to notice she was moving — from Yinxin’s legs to the floor beside Eden’s knee.

White hadn’t moved. His tea was at the same level it had been twenty minutes ago. His steel grey eyes tracked the room with the ambient attention of a man who processed everything and commented on nothing.

Jayde sat on the floor near Reiko, her back against his flank. The bond hummed between them — not words, just presence. The particular vibration that said here, whole, content. Takara was on the workbench, three ribbons catching low light, positioned precisely where he could see every face in the room while appearing to be asleep.

The conversations had been light. Eden asking about the Pavilion’s formation architecture. Yinxin explaining the dimensional substrate in terms that a Federation scientist could parse. Isha interjecting from the walls with corrections so precise they bordered on petty. Green fussing. White existing.

Then Green set down her teacup.

The motion was deliberate. Green didn’t do anything accidentally — eight thousand years had refined every gesture into intentional communication. Setting down the cup meant she was about to say something that required her full attention.

”What was she like?” Green asked. ”Before.”

The common room went quiet. Not silent — the Pavilion’s ambient hum continued, and Tianxin snored a small smoke-puff from Reiko’s back — but the human sounds stopped. No one moved.

Everyone in the room knew Jayde had another life. Isha had told them the broad strokes — a soul from another world, a warrior, a leader. Jayde had mentioned fragments in the way she mentioned anything personal: briefly, deflecting, with the tactical efficiency of someone who treated her own history as classified material.

But nobody had ever heard it from someone who was THERE.

Eden looked at Jayde.

The question in her eyes was clear — permission?

Jayde hesitated. This was the Commander’s life being offered for examination. Not a battle report or a tactical analysis. The messy, imperfect, brutal, beautiful life of a woman who had led ten thousand soldiers and couldn’t save the one closest to her.

(Let her tell them.)

Jade’s voice. Soft. Certain. The child who lived behind Jayde’s eyes — who heard the Federation voice’s tactical analysis for years and felt the Commander’s grief in the spaces between — wanted to know. She’d been sharing a mind with this sixty-year veteran for two years. She’d heard the analysis. She’d felt the muscle memory. She’d never heard the STORY.

(They’re our family, Commander. They deserve to know who we are. Both of us.)

Jayde nodded.

Eden set down her tea. Straightened — the motion subtle but unmistakable, the shift in posture that said briefing mode. When she spoke, her voice had changed. Not louder. Deeper. The voice of Dr. Shishido Eba giving an operational summary to people who needed to understand what they were dealing with.

”First, you need to understand something. The person sitting in this room—” Eden looked at Jayde. Gold eyes met blue, and something passed between them that didn’t need words. ”—is not what she was.”

She paused. Let that land.

”She was taller. Broader. Six feet of genetically engineered muscle wrapped in combat-grade powered armor. Jade-green eyes — that’s where the name came from. Someone looked at her eyes and said, ’Jayde, for the green fire.’ A voice that carried across a battlefield without amplification, and when she gave an order, ten thousand soldiers moved. Not because they were forced. Because they believed.”

Green’s green gaze was fixed on Eden. White had stopped pretending to drink his tea. Yinxin’s golden eyes held the particular stillness of a queen listening to intelligence about someone she thought she already knew.

”She was covered in scars. Old ones, new ones, some she’d had so long they’d faded to silver. She never healed them. She said scars were honest — ’They tell the truth about what you survived.’ The Federation — our civilization — had technology that could remove them. She refused. Every time.”

(Scars are honest.)

The child’s voice, quiet. Turning the words over.

Confirmed. The Commander’s position on physical scarification was consistent throughout her career.

”In her powered armor—” Eden’s hands moved, sketching dimensions in the air. ”—she stood eight feet tall. The armor amplified her strength by a factor of fifty. She could punch through bulkhead plating. But she didn’t need the armor to be dangerous. Without it, she could still break a man’s arm with one hand. Forty-seven fighting styles. Master of forty-seven different weapon systems. Undefeated in eight hundred and forty-seven consecutive military engagements.”

[Eight hundred and forty-seven,] Reiko sent through the bond. The number landed with the weight of something that didn’t fit into any framework he possessed. [Consecutive.]

”But that’s not what made her extraordinary.” Eden leaned forward. ”What made her extraordinary was this.”

She told them about the first time she met Commander Jayde Centauri.

***

”I was pulled out of a research facility.” Eden’s voice was even. Clinical. The voice of a woman describing something that had happened to her body while the person inside that body had been somewhere else. ”A place where they used people like me — genetically engineered people — as laboratory subjects. The details don’t matter. What matters is that when I woke up on a rebel ship, half-dead, barely conscious, there was a woman standing at the foot of my bed.”

She described it. The medical bay. The harsh lighting. The battered powered armor with carbon scoring across the chest plate. And the woman inside it — jade-green eyes reading a medical chart with the focused attention of someone who actually understood what the numbers meant.

”The first thing she said to me was: ’Your cortisol levels are elevated. That’s normal after extended captivity. The nightmares will fade to manageable within six months if you follow the recovery protocol. I’ve assigned you quarters with a south-facing viewport — natural light cycles help with circadian reset. Any allergies I should know about?’”

Eden let the silence hold.

”Not a speech about freedom. Not a promise about the future. Not ’you’re safe now’ or ’welcome to the rebellion.’ A cortisol reading and a viewport assignment. Because she’d already decided I was her responsibility, and her people got proper medical care. Even the ones she’d just pulled out of hell.”

Green’s hands had stopped moving. The constant, restless hands of a healer — always adjusting, always reaching for the next task — were still. Her fractured emerald eyes held something that Jayde couldn’t read from this angle, but that felt like recognition.

Green is identifying the behavioral pattern. Medical competence as a first contact protocol. Assessment before comfort. Triage as an expression of care.

(She sees us. She sees who we were because it’s who we still are.)

”After that,” Eden continued, ”she checked on me every day for six months. Not long visits — five minutes, sometimes less. Enough to confirm my recovery metrics were tracking correctly. Enough to ask if the nightmares had shifted frequency. Enough to notice when I started losing weight from the facility’s food memories and switched my meal assignments without telling me.”

”She just... switched them?” Green asked. Her voice was quiet.

”She’d noticed my caloric intake had dropped. Traced it to the food textures, triggering association responses from the facility. Replaced the trigger items with alternatives that provided equivalent nutrition. She didn’t mention it. She didn’t ask. She just fixed it.”

Green picked up her tea. Her hands were shaking.

(Why is Green—)

Green healed us in a cave for months. She monitored our nutritional intake. She adjusted our diet without asking because she’d identified deficiency patterns. Green is hearing a description of herself in another body, across another lifetime. The recognition is affecting her.

”The second story,” Eden said, ”is about how she held a corridor for eighteen hours.”

White leaned forward.

It was the smallest movement — a shift in his centre of gravity, maybe two degrees. But Jayde had been trained by this man. She knew every micro-expression his scarred face was capable of producing, and ”leaning forward” was not in his standard repertoire. White leaned BACK. White observed. White waited.

White did not lean toward stories unless the stories were about combat.

Eden told them about Titan-9.

She told it like a battle report that had been declassified for civilian consumption — structured, paced, but alive with the details that turned data into narrative. The bio-swarm invasion. Millions of creatures pouring through a breach in the defense corridor. Between the swarm and a civilian colony of ten thousand people: one corridor. One chokepoint.

One soldier.

”The swarm entities were bio-organic. Insectoid body plan, acid-based blood chemistry, adaptive neural networks that allowed mid-engagement evolution. Whatever worked against them in the first hour wouldn’t work in the sixth. They LEARNED.”

Eden described the first three hours — standard engagement, plasma cannons, and energy barriers, the corridor’s own defensive systems supplementing the soldier inside it. Jayde, in powered armor, was holding the line the way the corridor was designed to be held.

Except the corridor was designed for a PLATOON.

”By hour four, they’d adapted to plasma frequency. Acid-spitters targeted her armor joints — not randomly, SELECTIVELY. They’d identified the articulation points. Burrowers attempted subterranean flanking. Fliers probed the ceiling vents.” Eden’s hands moved as she spoke — not nervous motion, tactical illustration. Drawing positions in the air. ”She rerouted her power systems — cannoned the plasma arrays down, shifted the energy to kinetic barriers. Improvised explosive charges from corridor maintenance materials. Used the ventilation system as a weapon — superheated air channelled through the duct network into swarm clusters.”

White’s eyes tracked Eden’s hands. Following the tactical narrative, the way a musician follows notation.

”Hour nine. Her left arm servos failed. Full mechanical breakdown — acid corrosion in the joint assembly.”

Eden paused. The room held its breath.

”She ripped the arm off.”

[She—]

”Not her arm. The armor’s arm. Tore the entire assembly free at the shoulder mount. Welded it into a barricade across the corridor’s left flank using her plasma torch. Then she fought one-armed for the next nine hours.”

Green made a sound — small, involuntary, the healer’s flinch at damage described. Eden continued.

”Hour twelve. The swarm sent a queen-class organism. Larger. Armored. The kind of thing that took a full squad with heavy ordnance to bring down. She killed it with a plasma lance at point-blank range. The detonation destroyed her chest plate.”

”Close combat against a queen-class,” White said.

Everyone looked at him. He hadn’t spoken since entering the room.

”With failing armor and one functional arm.” His voice was flat. Evaluative. The voice of a combat instructor assessing a performance. ”What was her footing?”

”Ankle-deep in acid blood,” Eden said. ”Chemical burns across both shoulders and her back, where the chest plate failure exposed her undersuit. Seven points of armor breach.”

”Boot traction?”

”Magnetic soles. Standard issue for corridor defense.”

White nodded. Once. The same nod he’d given Eden earlier — but Jayde had been reading White’s nods for two years, and this one carried something the first hadn’t. Not approval. Not even respect.

Professional recognition. One warrior acknowledging another across the impossible distance of separate worlds.

”The rescue force arrived at hour sixteen,” Eden said. ”They found her upright. Still fighting. The corridor behind her — ten thousand civilians — untouched. The rescue commander’s report stated: ’Commander SN1098 was upright and engaging hostiles upon our arrival. When informed that relief had arrived, she said—’”

Eden stopped. Looked at Jayde.

Jayde remembered. She remembered the sound of boots behind her that weren’t the chitinous scraping of swarm legs. The voice cutting through eighteen hours of combat noise, saying Commander, we’re here. The bone-deep exhaustion that had been held at bay by pure will for so long that it didn’t know how to arrive gracefully.

”’About damn time. They’ve been adapting to plasma since hour nine — switch to kinetics.’”

Eden said it the way Jayde had said it — flat, tactical, already moving to the next problem. Then she added: ”Then she collapsed.”

Silence.

Reiko’s body vibrated against Jayde’s back — a low frequency that might have been a growl and might have been something else entirely. Through the bond, no words. A feeling. The vast, wordless recognition of one being who had fought alone against impossible odds, seeing itself reflected in another’s history.

[Eighteen hours,] he sent finally. [Alone.]

”Not alone,” Jayde said quietly. ”They were behind me. Ten thousand of them.”

[That’s what I mean.]

***

”One ship,” Eden said. ”Against twelve.”

The third story. Kepler’s Gate. And Eden told it the way a strategist tells a masterwork — not with reverence but with the barely-contained excitement of someone who understood exactly how impossible the mathematics were and how completely the woman beside her had rewritten them.

”Twelve Xi Corp dreadnoughts. Each one capable of bombarding a planet into submission from orbital altitude. They were blockading a hyperspace nexus — a critical transit point that controlled travel across nine star systems. Without it, the rebellion couldn’t move supplies, couldn’t coordinate, couldn’t survive.”

She described the rebel fleet. One captured battleship — refitted, functional, outgunned by any single dreadnought by a factor of six. Seventeen fighters — fast, fragile, designed for escort duty, not capital ship engagement.

”Every tactical manual in the Federation said the same thing: you do not engage twelve dreadnoughts with one battleship. Not with seventeen. Not with a hundred. Dreadnoughts are built for exactly one thing — absorbing damage and delivering more. They fight in formations designed by computers using threat-optimisation algorithms refined over centuries. The math was settled.”

Eden’s eyes found Jayde. ”She wasn’t interested in the settled math.”

The asteroid field. A chaotic orbital system — hundreds of bodies ranging from building-sized to dwarf-planet-sized, tumbling through space in patterns that looked random but obeyed gravitational laws so complex that navigation computers took minutes to plot safe paths.

”She saw the field the way she saw everything — as a weapon she hadn’t used yet. Dreadnoughts are massive. Slow to turn. Built for broadside engagements in open space. In an asteroid field, every advantage they possessed became a liability.”

Eden described the battle. The seventeen fighters used as bait — darting between asteroids, drawing dreadnought fire into the field. Capital ship weapons missing their targets and striking asteroids instead, creating fragments that became additional projectiles. The field transforming from obstacle to ammunition.

”Then she did the part that made her a legend.”

The slingshot. Jayde’s battleship accelerating INTO the gravitational well of the field’s largest body — a dwarf planet with enough mass to bend trajectories. Using the gravity to whip the ship around at a velocity that the dreadnoughts’ targeting systems couldn’t track, emerging from behind the dwarf planet directly into the formation’s blind spot.

”At that speed, with the dreadnoughts already scattered by the asteroid engagement, she punched through the formation like—” Eden searched for a Doha comparison. ”—like a sword through paper. Three dreadnoughts destroyed on the first pass. Two more collided with asteroids while trying to reposition. The remaining seven broke formation and retreated.”

”Seven capital ships,” Isha said from the walls. His voice carried something Jayde rarely heard from the ancient spirit — genuine intellectual pleasure. ”Retreated. From a single vessel using gravitational mechanics as a force multiplier.”

”The principle is elegant,” Eden said. ”She saw what nobody else could see. The field wasn’t an obstacle. The gravity wasn’t a hazard. Everything in that system was a tool — she just had to show it what it was for.”

”How many?” Green asked. Quietly.

Eden didn’t pretend not to understand. ”Two hundred fighters. Good people. Volunteers.”

Green’s teacup was in her hands again. Holding it like an anchor.

”She cried in her quarters afterward. Alone. She thought no one knew.” Eden’s voice didn’t change. Steady. Even. The voice of someone who had treated the Commander’s grief as a medical confidence and had never violated it until now. ”She kept a list. Every name. Every engagement. She read them before she slept, every night, until the list was so long that reading it took twenty minutes. She never stopped reading it.”

Green said nothing. But her fractured emerald eyes held the particular brightness of tears that were not permitted to fall, and her hands around the teacup were steady only because eight thousand years of holding broken things had made steadiness a reflex.

***

”The last story,” Eden said, ”is about a planet.”

She shifted. The briefing posture relaxed — not into casualness, but into something softer. The voice that told this story wasn’t the tactical narrator of Titan-9 or the strategic analyst of Kepler’s Gate. This voice was personal.

”Our civilization — the one the Commander and I came from — built people. Genetically engineered. Grown in laboratories. Given designations instead of names. SN1098. SN1055. SN0734. Numbers on a production manifest.”

She didn’t explain further. She didn’t need to. Every person in this room understood what it meant to be property — Reiko had been hunted by his own pride. Yinxin had been hunted by every faction on the planet. Green and White had given up the world to live inside a pocket dimension. Even Isha — a Luminari construct, built to serve — understood what it meant to exist as a function rather than a person.

”The Commander found a planet. Hidden, uncharted, in a system that nobody was looking at. Breathable atmosphere. No sapient life. She looked at it, and she thought—” Eden paused. ”She thought: here. Here is where the children will be safe.”

Not a military base. Not a strategic asset. A HOME.

”She built it with her hands. With scientists and engineers and rescued slaves and broken people that nobody else wanted. Organic architecture — buildings that grew from the planet’s own ecosystem, designed by a terraforming specialist who could interface with planetary biology. Gardens. Schools. Medical facilities. Playgrounds.”

The word sat in the room like a stone dropped into still water. Playgrounds.

”She’d never had a childhood,” Eden said. ”None of us had. We were manufactured. Conditioned. Deployed. The concept of PLAYING was something she learned about from rescued civilian children. She watched them play, and she built places for it to happen — spaces with no tactical purpose, no strategic value, no function except joy.”

(She built playgrounds.)

Jade’s voice. Small. Aching.

Confirmed. Eden’s recreational facilities were non-functional from a military standpoint. The Commander authorised their construction over the objections of three logistics officers.

(She built them anyway.)

”The first children were born on Eden — that was the planet’s name — about three years after she founded it. Not genetically engineered. Not manufactured. Just... born. Normal pregnancies. Natural births. Babies who would grow up with names instead of numbers, in sunlight instead of laboratories, with parents who chose to have them instead of corporations that ordered their production.”

Eden’s voice cracked. A fracture — small, contained, a surgeon’s crack that sealed itself almost before it opened.

”She held the first one. I was there — I delivered the baby. Put it in her arms. This woman—” Eden looked at Jayde. ”—this legendary Commander who’d fought swarms and destroyed fleets and terrorised the most powerful corporation in the galaxy — she held a newborn baby, and she didn’t say anything for three minutes.”

Silence.

”She doesn’t cry when she’s overwhelmed,” Eden said softly. ”She goes still. Like the emotion is so big that her body doesn’t know what to do with it, so it just... stops.”

Jayde remembered. She remembered the weight. The impossible, terrifying, sacred weight of a life that existed because she had made a world where it was safe to exist.

Green set her tea down. Her hands were shaking. Not subtly — shaking, the tremor visible even from across the room. Eight thousand years of healer’s discipline, and she could not keep her hands still.

She was looking at Jayde. Seeing the girl she’d found in a cave with a broken body and a shattered core and the scars of a childhood that had been nothing but suffering. And in another life — another body, another world, another impossible existence — that same soul had built a PLANET. For children. So they could play.

Yinxin’s hand had moved to Tianxin, who slept on Reiko’s back. Her fingers rested on the wyrmling’s scales — unconscious, instinctive, the gesture of a mother who had hidden her children from every faction on the planet and trusted one person to protect them. She’d chosen Jayde because Jayde had stood between five shadowbeasts and a dying mother’s child. Now she was hearing about a woman who’d built a world for the same reason.

Same soul. Different war. Same answer: the children come first.

Reiko pressed harder against Jayde’s back. Through the bond — not words. Warmth. The wordless communication of a being who had been orphaned, hunted, nearly killed, and saved by this person. The person who built playgrounds on alien planets and held corridors for eighteen hours and cried alone in her quarters for two hundred dead fighters.

White hadn’t moved. But his steel grey eyes were on Jayde, and behind the scarred, impassive face of the most feared combat instructor in the Pavilion, something existed that had not been there before. Not softness — White didn’t do soft. But SEEN. The full architecture of a person, viewed complete, and found worthy.

***

”There’s one more thing,” Eden said. ”And this is the part that explains everything.”

The room waited.

”She had a brother.” Eden’s voice was careful now. Measured. She was approaching a wound that hadn’t healed in two lifetimes. ”His name was Lawrence. Designation SN1055.”

Jayde’s jaw tightened. Not a flinch — the opposite. The deliberate stillness of someone who had decided not to flinch.

”They were born in adjacent vats,” Eden said. ”Same engineering batch. A thousand of them — manufactured together. Raised together. Trained together. Children built for war, given numbers instead of names, conditioned to kill before they could read.” She paused. ”The survival rate was zero point two percent. By the time they were nine, fifty remained. The training broke the rest — bones, minds, souls. The corporation called it quality assurance.”

The room was very still. Even Tianxin’s snoring had faded to a whisper.

”By sixteen, only two stood. Lawrence and Jayde. The last of a thousand dead children.” Eden’s blue eyes were steady. ”He named her. In her quarters, breaking regulations, perched on her bunk. ’I’m calling you Jayde,’ he said. ’For the green fire in your eyes. They can’t kill us now — we’re too valuable.’ He gave her the only identity she ever had that wasn’t a production number.”

She let the weight of that settle — what it meant to share that kind of history. Two survivors from a mass grave of siblings. Everyone they’d grown up with was dead. They had each other, and that was supposed to be enough.

”Sixty years. Sixty years of fighting together, planning together, building together. He was her anchor. The one constant in a universe that did nothing but burn.” Eden’s hands were clasped in her lap. Still. ”Then he disappeared. Missing for two years — no body, no signal. Xi Corp reported him killed in action.”

(Two years. We thought he was dead for two years.)

Confirmed. The absence was... significant.

”She found him,” Eden said quietly. ”In a Xi Corp transport ship. High-security cell. His body was—” She stopped. Started again with the clinical precision of a doctor who had treated the injuries personally. ”Cracked ribs. Burns from shock batons. Lacerations across his torso. She sedated him because she couldn’t bear his conscious agony, carried him to me in stasis. I spent weeks putting him back together.”

Green’s hands had gone still — the stillness of someone who had just understood something so large that the body’s response mechanisms shut down rather than try to process it.

”He recovered. He heard about the mission — a facility where the corporation kept the kill switches. Every genetically engineered soldier in existence had a device implanted during manufacturing. One signal from that facility could terminate millions of people. Instantly. The Commander was going to destroy it.”

”Lawrence insisted on coming,” Jayde said. Her voice was level. Too level. ”I said no. Told him he wasn’t cleared, told him to heal. He said—” A pause. ”’You think I’ll sit here while you take on Xi Corp? After what they did? I want payback.’”

”She let him come,” Eden said. ”Because he was her brother. Because she’d just spent two years thinking he was dead and couldn’t bear to leave him behind again.”

The pause stretched. Eden’s composure held — the surgeon’s mask, the clinical precision that let her deliver a diagnosis without flinching.

”It was a trap. All of it — the two years of captivity, the transport she found him in, the intelligence about the kill switches. Xi Corp had engineered every piece. His capture was staged. His torture was REAL — they hurt him to make it convincing — but the circumstances of her finding him? Arranged. Designed to cement a debt she’d feel in her bones. She saved his life, so she’d never question his loyalty.”

Yinxin’s golden eyes closed. A fraction of a second. The queen’s equivalent of a flinch.

”He’d been asking questions after his return. About logistics. Personnel numbers. Destinations. Coordinates.” Eden’s voice was flat now. Stripped of everything except precision. ”She noticed. She NOTICED — because the Commander notices everything — and she suppressed it. Told herself it was natural curiosity after two years of captivity. Told herself he was just eager to help.”

”Because the alternative was unbearable,” Jayde said quietly.

”Their objective was threefold,” Eden continued. ”Capture Jayde. Use her to find and control her army. And find Eden.” She looked around the room. ”The planet. A hidden habitable world, uncharted, coordinates known to one person only. Worlds that can sustain life are so rare, so valuable, that corporations fought wars over them. Xi Corp would have killed millions to get those coordinates. And they almost did — they almost had everything.”

”He shot her in the back.”

Five words. Eden delivered them without inflection. Without emphasis. The facts, stripped to bone.

”He used her designation while he did it. Not her name — the name he’d given her, the identity he’d created so a scared child in a laboratory would have something to hold onto. He used her PRODUCTION NUMBER. While he pulled the trigger.”

Through the bond, Reiko’s presence went cold. Not absent — cold. The deep, predatory cold of a being whose fundamental nature was shadow and whose response to threat was not heat but the absolute, annihilating absence of it.

[His whole life,] he sent. [Built for this. From the beginning.]

”She chose to die,” Eden said. ”Triggered a weapon that destroyed the facility, the spy, the corporation executive who’d orchestrated everything. The coordinates of Eden died with her — locked in a mind that was about to become antimatter. Her last words — recorded, broadcast to every rebel base, carved into the statue at every Centauri installation across a galaxy — were: ’I’d rather die standing than live on my knees.’”

Silence.

The Pavilion’s ambient hum was the only sound. Even Isha was quiet — the ancient spirit who always had a comment, always had a gentle correction or a wry observation, said nothing.

”That’s why she tests people,” Eden said. ”That’s why the verification took three weeks. That’s why the Soul Oath.” She looked at Jayde — directly, unflinching, a doctor assessing a wound she’d been treating for a century. ”Because the only family she had left was manufactured to destroy her.”

Jayde spoke. Her voice was level — the Commander’s register, the one that had carried across battlefields.

”The two years were real.” She felt the room shift — every eye finding her, every being in this warm, impossible space turning toward the person at the centre of the story. ”That’s the worst part. The torture was real — they broke his ribs and burned him to make it convincing. He SUFFERED to sell the lie. I carried him out of that transport, and his blood on my hands was real. And the sixty years before — the conversations, the shared dreams, the nights when only he kept the nightmares away.” She exhaled. ”I’ve spent two lifetimes trying to understand how someone can be your brother for sixty years and be their weapon the entire time. I still don’t have an answer.”

Green stood. Crossed the room. She didn’t say anything. She sat down beside Jayde — close, closer than she usually sat, close enough that her shoulder touched Jayde’s arm — and she stayed there.

That was Green’s answer. Presence. The healer’s oldest tool.

White’s jaw had tightened. One micro-expression — visible for a fraction of a second, then controlled. He knew betrayal. He knew what it cost. The bone-handled whip resting against his chair carried its own history of trust broken and lessons learned.

Yinxin looked at Jayde for a long time. Her golden eyes held the weight of three thousand years of inherited queen memories — wars, betrayals, alliances, the full catastrophic history of dragonkind’s political machinations. She had contracted Jayde. Trusted her with three children. And Jayde’s deepest wound was a trust that had been weaponized.

The magnitude of what Jayde had given Yinxin — the act of trusting again, after Lawrence, after sixty years of a lie so total it had no seams — settled on the dragon queen like the weight of a truth she hadn’t fully grasped until this moment.

”Thank you,” Yinxin said. Quietly. ”For trusting us.”

Jayde didn’t answer. She couldn’t. Green was pressed against her side, and the bond was full of Reiko’s cold fury warming slowly back to something that resembled fierce protectiveness, and Jade — the child behind her eyes — was very, very quiet.

(He was born beside us. Same vat. Same batch. A thousand children, and only two survived, and one of them was built to destroy the other.)

Yes.

(But we’re still here. And Lawrence isn’t. And Doc is. And they never found Eden.)

Yes.

(That has to count for something, Commander.)

It counts for everything.
