Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 332: Chapter 327: The Health Initiative

Location:Zhū’kethara — Kael’thoren Fortress

Date/Time:Late Cinderfall, 9939 AZI

Realm:Demon Realm

The basins were placed before dawn.

Gharet handled the logistics personally — the elder warrior’s organisational fury channelled into something that looked, from the outside, like routine maintenance. New washing stations in the training yard. Fresh basins in the mess hall. Upgraded facilities in the barracks washrooms, the armoury antechambers, and the corridor stations where warriors cleaned their hands before entering the communal areas. Kael’thoren had always had basins. Every demon fortress did — the daily ablutions were as ancient as the race, the rituals of cleanliness woven so deeply into demon culture that no warrior questioned water any more than he questioned air.

The water in every basin contained one drop of Vaelith’s reagent per gallon. Indistinguishable from water. No scent. No taste. No visible difference.

The observers were placed with equal care. Lysander’s intelligence operatives — three demons whose identities were known only to the spymaster and the king — positioned at key washroom junctions. Not watching the basins. Watching the hands that emerged from them. Noting who paused to scratch at a wrist. Noting who didn’t.

The genuine demons would feel a moment of refreshment — a coolness that eased fatigue, a nourishing touch from the Vor’lumen’s distilled essence that most would attribute to the new soap Gharet had requisitioned, or the improved water quality, or nothing at all because the sensation was pleasant and people didn’t question pleasant things.

The hollow ones would get a rash. Small. Red. The kind of minor skin irritation that a warrior might scratch at absently and forget within the hour. Nothing alarming. Nothing that would trigger the flight-or-fight response that a visible test would provoke.

But Lysander’s people would see it.

Ren stood on the upper gallery of Kael’thoren’s central tower, watching the fortress wake. Dawn’s first light — amber through the eternal twilight’s veil — touched the training yard where the first warriors were already moving. Drills. Formations. The ancient rhythms of a military that had been defending this realm for longer than most civilisations had existed.

They’d wash their hands before the morning meal. All of them. Because that was what demons did.

The quintet results had come back three days ago. Clean.

Seven thousand truemated females. Thirty-five thousand guards. Tested through the basin method — reagent dissolved in the water of every quintet washroom, every female-quarter facility, every bathing house in the truemated districts. Three weeks of invisible screening. Not a single rash reported by Lysander’s observers.

Vaelith’s analysis had been immediate and clinical: ”It makes sense.”

She’d presented it to the inner circle in the research chambers — green-gold eyes carrying the particular brightness of a researcher whose data had confirmed a hypothesis she’d been building from the lore itself.

”Demon females are empaths. All of us. The gift is biological — woven into our essence the way the Vor’kesh is woven into the males’. We feel the souls around us. A Vor’nakhet radiates absence — the void where a soul should be. To any demoness standing near a hollow, that absence would register as pain. Not mild discomfort. Agony.”

”Which means the hollows know to avoid females,” Lysander had said from his customary shadow. Pure black eyes with violet flecks, mapping the implications. ”A Vor’nakhet who stood guard over a demoness would cause visible distress. The hollow would be identified not by the test but by the pain it caused.”

”Self-preservation,” Kaelen had added. ”Any Vor’nakhet with functional intelligence — and we must assume they have it — would learn to keep distance from empathic detection.”

The logic had branched further. The quintet guards had been assigned when they carried many leaves — Thalos had started at thirty-two. The leaves fell during centuries of service. By the time a guard was down to one leaf, the demoness had known him for millennia. The relationship predated the pain. And the truemated female’s mate shielded her — the bond allowed the male to buffer his partner’s empathic channels, absorbing some of the ambient distress. An unconscious process, built into the bond’s architecture. It cost essence. Constantly. Neither mate discussed it.

”The older females refuse to replace their guards,” Vaelith had said. Quietly. ”Thalos has been at my shoulder for thirty-eight thousand years. His Vor’kesh causes me pain every day — the cold-knife edge of a soul that’s barely holding. Vorketh shields me from the worst of it. But I still feel him.”

She’d paused. Her hands — steady through every crisis, every experiment, every revelation — had trembled once.

”I could replace him. Assign him to a garrison post. Bring in a guard with more leaves. Reduce my own pain.” Her green-gold eyes had met Ren’s. ”But I would rather feel the cold every morning for the rest of my life than tell a warrior who has guarded me for thirty-eight thousand years that his suffering is too inconvenient for me to bear.”

Morvhan had spoken then — the tradition-keeper’s faded copper eyes carrying the weight of customs older than most of the beings in the room. ”The bond between a female and her quintet is sacred. The first queens chose their guards, and those guards swore to stand until they fell. The oath doesn’t include a clause for convenience.”

”Or for pain,” Vaelith had added.

The room had understood. Every truemated female with an ancient quintet endured empathic distress daily. Every mate shielded her at a cost they never mentioned. Every guard knew he was hurting his charge by existing near her, and every charge refused to let him go. Loyalty older than pain. Love that expressed itself as endurance.

And the Kael’thoren warriors — unmated, concentrated in a fortress with minimal female presence — were the population MOST likely to harbour hollows who had learned to avoid detection by avoiding the only beings biologically equipped to feel them.

Which brought them to today.

The morning meal in Kael’thoren’s great hall was a study in controlled chaos.

Six hundred warriors at long obsidian tables — the fortress’s current garrison, ranging from the youngest at eight thousand years to ancients whose service predated Salroch’s reign. The noise was considerable. Conversations carried in the particular register of demons who had spent millennia communicating across training yards and battlefields — not shouting, but pitched to carry, voices layered over the ambient hum of essence-reinforced stone and the clatter of ceramic on dark wood.

Every warrior had washed his hands at the entrance basins. Every one. Because the basins were THERE — positioned at the hall’s three entry points, staffed by attendants who ensured fresh water and clean towels with the quiet efficiency of a support corps that took pride in its work. The attendants had been briefed by Gharet. Not on what the water contained — only on the importance of ensuring every warrior used the basins before sitting. Hygiene initiative. Health screening support. The kind of directive that a military organisation accepted without question because directives were what military organisations ran on.

A Terracore warrior — copper-brown hair, bronze-tinted skin, the broad hands of a demon who’d spent his last century in the construction corps — paused at the basin longer than most. Rolled his sleeves. Washed slowly, working the water between his fingers with the deliberate thoroughness of a craftsman who respected the material. When he finished, he flexed his hands once. Something eased in his expression — a tension he probably hadn’t known he was carrying, released by a sensation he’d attribute to the cold water and the morning air.

The reagent doing its invisible work. Nourishing what was whole.

He dried his hands, nodded to the attendant, and walked to his table. Behind him, the basin waited for the next pair of hands.

Ren ate with them. Not at the head table — at one of the long tables, fifth row from the entrance, between a Terracore warrior with copper-brown hair and the particular quiet of a demon who preferred stone to conversation, and a young Galebreath fighter with white hair and the barely contained energy of someone who hadn’t lived long enough to learn patience.

The king at the common table. It wasn’t unusual — Ren did this regularly, moving through the fortress’s spaces the way water moved through stone, present without hovering, visible without performing. The warriors adjusted around him the way they adjusted around any high-ranking presence: subtle straightening, slightly better manners, the ambient awareness that their king was three seats away and was eating the same food from the same kitchen and had washed his hands at the same basin.

What they didn’t notice — what nobody noticed, because noticing was Lysander’s people’s job — was the observer at the far wall, cataloguing hands. Every warrior who entered, washed, and sat. Every pair of hands that emerged from the basin water clean and unchanged.

Six hundred warriors. Morning meal. Basin water doing its invisible work.

No rashes.

The health initiative was Vaelith’s second stroke of genius.

The basins screened for Vor’nakhet — binary, absolute, rash or refreshment. But the initiative added a layer that transformed covert detection into something the demons themselves would value.

”The new nation requires health baselines for all citizens.” The announcement had gone out through official channels, signed by Ren. ”Medical records will inform resource allocation, healer deployment, and future treatment planning.”

Completely true. The screening WAS legitimate. Every demon who attended received a genuine medical assessment — cultivation status, essence balance, old injuries, and general condition. The Vor’kesh component was woven into the broader evaluation so subtly that it appeared to be exactly what it claimed: baseline measurement.

The healers were mixed-blood women. This was deliberate — and brilliant, because the reason was double-layered. Publicly: mixed-blood healers were integrating into the realm’s medical infrastructure. A health initiative staffed by mixed-bloods normalised their presence. Privately: the mixed-blood women’s proximity to Vor’kesh produced a secondary effect that Vaelith had documented across weeks of observation. The essence interaction between mixed-blood biology and demon vine-structure made the Vor’kesh MORE readable. Brighter. More responsive to diagnostic assessment. As if the mixed-blood presence made the vine want to be seen.

The warriors came grumbling.

”I’ve been functional for fourteen thousand years without a healer’s opinion on my essence balance.” A massive Inferno warrior — crimson hair beginning to fade at the temples, the weathered jade-white skin of a demon who had fought through the Fourth Zartonesh invasion and carried the kill count to prove it — sat at the assessment station with the resignation of a being who found paperwork more painful than combat.

The mixed-blood healer — young, midnight black hair with faint copper streaks, green-gold eyes steady — read the assessment with professional focus. Essence readings. Cultivation metrics. General health markers. Her gaze stayed on her instruments and her patient’s face — nowhere else.

What she DID say: ”Your essence balance shows strong Inferno-primary stability. The secondary channels are well-maintained for your service record. The cultivation assessment puts you at solid mid-Apexblight — consistent with your tier.” She made a note. ”You have an old compression injury in your right shoulder that’s been compensating for approximately two thousand years. A healer could address that in a single session if you’d like to schedule one.”

The warrior stared at her. ”My shoulder?”

”The joint is tracking three degrees off-centre. You’ve adapted your combat stance to compensate — probably don’t notice anymore. But the adaptation is creating secondary strain in your lower back that will worsen over the next millennium.”

He blinked. Fourteen thousand years, two Zartonesh wars, more battles than he could count — and a girl young enough to be his great-great-great-granddaughter had just identified a shoulder injury he’d been unconsciously compensating for since before she was born.

”I... yes. A session. That would be...” He searched for words that didn’t come naturally to a warrior discussing medical care. ”Appreciated.”

She smiled. Professional. Warm. The smile of someone who understood that the demon sitting in front of her had probably never been told his body deserved attention that wasn’t combat-related.

”Next station is to your left.”

He went. His posture was different — not changed, exactly, but carrying something that hadn’t been there when he sat down. The specific comfort of having been SEEN. His body, his service, his shoulder that had been hurting for two thousand years while he’d been too proud or too Shan’kara to mention it.
