Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 310: Chapter 305: The Shape of a Ghost

Location:Obsidian Academy — Workshop, Second Segment

Date/Time:15 Infernorest, 9939 AZI

Realm:Lower Realm

The problem was distribution.

Jayde had been staring at the formation array for twenty minutes without blinking, and she’d stopped caring. The workshop was empty — first bell hadn’t rung, the other students wouldn’t arrive for another hour, and the amber glow of the ceiling inscriptions turned the practice parchment into a map of everything that was wrong with her design.

Radial distribution from a central node. Doha standard. Elegant. Wasteful.

She tapped the end of her ink pen against her bottom lip. Once. Twice. The rhythm her hand fell into when her conscious mind was elsewhere — a habit she’d never noticed in this body, carried forward from a life where it had driven Lieutenant Kira’s cybernetic eyes to narrow every time she did it during mission briefings.

”Node saturation at forty percent load...” The words came out as a mutter, half-voiced, addressed to nobody. ”...secondary channels bottleneck at — no, the bypass won’t hold if the primary exceeds capacity—”

She trailed off. Stared into the middle distance. The pen tapped.

The Field Infirmary Tent was the third device. The most important. The Water Purifier had been filtration — straightforward, a single problem with a single solution. The Bone-Knit Bracer had been single-target healing delivery — elegant but limited, one patient at a time, and one patient at a time didn’t save frontier villages when a beast pack hit and half the population was bleeding out on the same dirt floor.

The Field Infirmary Tent was the one that would actually change things. A tent that could assess and treat multiple casualties simultaneously, allocating healing essence across a field of patients based on severity, triaging automatically so the worst cases received the most resources while stable patients received maintenance-level support.

The problem was that Doha’s approach to multi-patient healing was radial. Central node, equal distribution. One healer pumping essence outward in all directions like a candle lighting a room — it reached everything, but it couldn’t focus. A patient with a scratch got the same allocation as a patient bleeding out. Equal wasn’t fair. Equal was lazy arithmetic wearing the mask of compassion.

Inefficient. The solution is topological. Network distribution with weighted channels and real-time feedback reallocation.

She was drawing before she finished thinking. The pen left her lip and hit the parchment, and the lines flowed — not the careful inscriptions of a student copying established patterns, but the rapid, confident strokes of a mind transcribing rather than inventing. Node to node. Weighted channels. Counter-directional feedback loops. Phased reallocation triggers. The architecture appearing on the parchment as if it had always been there, waiting for a hand that knew its shape.

Her head tilted — chin lifting, eyes going slightly unfocused as the design completed itself in the space between thought and ink. Her free hand drummed the workbench. Three taps. Pause. Three taps. The rhythm of counting nodes.

”...feedback loop needs to run counter-directional or the lag kills the reallocation speed...” Another mutter. She crossed out a channel, redrew it. ”...phase the triggers — stagger them so the system doesn’t cascade when multiple patients destabilise simultaneously...” Her tongue pressed against her teeth — the unconscious expression she made when a design was close but not right, when the architecture was sound but the implementation needed one more adjustment to shift from functional to optimal. ”...there. Weighted cascade with a half-second phase delay. That gives the feedback loop time to read before the next trigger fires.”

She leaned back. Pen against lip. Eyes on the array. Seeing not formation ink on practice parchment but the ghost of a holographic display in a ready room that didn’t exist anymore, on a ship that had been scrapped for parts twenty years before she was born in this body.

The workshop door opened behind her. She didn’t hear it.

***

Eden paused in the doorway.

Two clay cups in her hands. Morning tea — the Academy’s standard brew that tasted like nothing in particular but was hot enough to justify the walk to the lower kitchens. She’d been bringing tea to the workshop for weeks now. It had started as politeness, then become habit, then become something she didn’t examine too closely because examining it led to places she couldn’t afford to go.

She almost called out. Almost said ”Brought you something” the way she always did.

She didn’t.

Because Jayde was sitting at the workbench with her pen against her bottom lip and her eyes on the middle distance, and something about the image stopped Eden’s voice in her throat.

She’d seen this before.

Not here. Not on Doha. Not in this life. She’d seen someone sit exactly like this — the pen against the lip, the head at that particular angle, the left hand drumming three-tap rhythms on the surface while the right hand held an instrument against the mouth. A posture she’d have known in the dark, by feel alone, because she’d watched it a thousand times through the observation window of Med-Bay Sigma-Four while someone she loved sat in the adjacent office working through logistics problems that would decide whether people lived or died.

Don’t.

The thought came hard and clean. A wall she’d built five years ago, the first week after waking in a child’s body on a world that smelled of sulfur. A wall that said: she’s dead. You watched the recording. You saw Lawrence shoot her. You saw her smile. You saw her trigger the switch. She chose it. She’s GONE. Anyone who reminds you of her is not her. Stop looking.

Eden had been very good at not looking.

For months, she’d been not looking. Not looking at the way this girl approached problems — identify, optimise, implement, test — with a systematic efficiency that didn’t belong in a frontier orphan. Not looking at the surgical precision of her hand movements when she worked with formation tools. Not looking at the way she read a room before entering it, cataloguing exits and sight lines with the unconscious sweep of someone trained in tactical assessment. Not looking at the phrasing that crept into conversation when the girl was tired or distracted — too structured, too precise, too military for someone who’d supposedly grown up in a forest.

Not looking at the muttering. The habit of talking through problems aloud when she thought she was alone — half-voiced fragments, technical language wrapped in a cadence that Eden’s ears recognised the way a musician’s ears recognised a melody heard once in childhood and never forgotten. The cadence of someone who’d learned to think out loud in command centres and mission briefings, who processed complexity by speaking it because speaking made the patterns audible and audible patterns were easier to debug.

Not looking at the tapping. The pen against the lip. The three-tap rhythm. The head tilt. The tongue pressing against teeth when a design was close but not right.

She’d been filing it. All of it. Carefully, quietly, in a corner of her mind labelled ”impossible” and left sealed. Because opening it meant admitting that the pattern she was seeing was a pattern, and patterns had implications, and the implication of this particular pattern was so far beyond the boundaries of anything that should be possible that acknowledging it would crack the only wall keeping her sane.

For five years, that wall had held. Through five years of pretending to be a village orphan on a world that didn’t know what a genome was. Through five years of watching people die of infections she could have cleared with basic antibiotics. Through five years of loneliness so complete it had calcified into something structural — not a feeling anymore but a load-bearing element, a part of the architecture of who she was on Doha. The wall said: you are alone. You will always be alone. Nobody on this world speaks your language or knows your name. Accept it. Survive. Stop looking for ghosts.

The wall had held.

But standing in the doorway, watching Jayde Ashford tap a pen against her bottom lip with the exact rhythm — three taps, pause, three taps — that a woman named Commander Jayde Centauri had used every single time she worked through a problem for sixty years across a hundred battlefields and a thousand mission briefings—

Don’t. She is dead. You watched her die.

Eden set the cups down on the shelf beside the door. Quietly. Her hands were not steady. Her hands were always steady — surgeon’s hands, the one part of her old self that had survived the transition between bodies intact. Her hands did not shake.

They were shaking now.

She walked toward the workbench. Quietly. The girl hadn’t noticed her. Hadn’t looked up. Was deep in whatever she was building, her mouth moving with half-voiced words that Eden couldn’t quite hear — muttering to herself the way—

Stop. She is NOT—

But the muttering. The cadence. The rhythm of the words, not the words themselves — the rise and fall, the pauses where a trained mind checked its own work before moving on, the slight acceleration when a solution clicked, and the slight deceleration when it didn’t. Eden knew this rhythm. Had spent six months hearing it through the walls of the Meridian, through bulkheads and blast doors, the Commander’s voice carrying at frequencies she probably didn’t know she projected. Had spent fifty years after that hearing it in memory, in dreams, in the silence of a laboratory where she’d built a machine to bring the voice back.

Eden was close enough now to see the parchment.

The formation array was spread across the workbench — fresh essence-ink still gleaming on the practice sheet. Eden’s eyes moved across it. Not scanning randomly. Not reading the way a Doha student would read — symbol by symbol, trying to identify established patterns from the Academy curriculum.

Reading the way a mind trained in scientific methodology reads anything. Following the logic. The structure. The architecture.

Node to node. Channel to channel. Weighted prioritisation pathways. Counter-directional feedback loops. Phased reallocation triggers. The system laid out in formation-ink lines that didn’t follow any Doha convention Eden had encountered in five years of self-study.

Because they weren’t Doha conventions.

They were — the breath left her lungs — they were resource allocation topology. Multi-node casualty network optimisation. Field hospital deployment protocol. The mathematical framework that determined how you distributed finite medical resources across a mass casualty event when you had more patients than capacity and every second of misallocation cost lives.

She knew this framework. She’d studied it. She’d used it — in field hospitals and combat triage centres and emergency surgical bays where the difference between a patient living and dying was whether the allocation algorithm could redirect support from stabilised cases to crashing ones fast enough. She’d used it on the Meridian, in the aftermath of engagements that produced more casualties than her medical bay could handle, while the Commander sat in the adjacent office drawing logistics diagrams with exactly this hand and exactly this rhythm and exactly this angle of the head.

This framework did not exist on Doha. It could not exist on Doha. It required a mathematical foundation that this world’s cultivation-based approach to healing had never developed.

This framework existed in exactly one place in Eden’s experience. In training she’d received in another life, in classrooms on stations that orbited stars this world had never seen, from instructors whose civilisation was dust.

Her eyes lifted from the parchment. Found the girl sitting at the workbench. Pen against lip. Eyes unfocused. Mouth moving with half-words. Left hand drumming — three taps, pause, three taps.

And for one moment — one vertiginous, reality-fracturing moment — Eden saw two people occupying the same chair. The girl in front of her, seventeen years old, black hair, brown eyes, hunched over a workbench in a formation workshop. And overlaying her like a ghost refusing to fade — someone taller, angular, green-eyed, dark hair in a severe bun, the woman whose image was carved in moonrock statues across a hundred worlds with her words etched beneath: I would rather die standing than live on my knees.

The wall cracked.

Not shattered — cracked. A single fracture running through the masonry of five years of discipline, five years of she is dead, stop looking, five years of being the only person on an entire planet who knew what a Federation logistics module looked like.

And through the crack, a word.

Soft. Barely voiced. Disbelieving — the sound of someone who knows what they’re saying is impossible and is saying it anyway because the evidence is in front of them in essence-ink on practice parchment and their hands are shaking and the wall is cracking and they can’t stop it and the ghost is sitting right there with a pen against her lip and a three-tap rhythm on the workbench and a formation design that could not exist on this world unless the person who drew it had carried it here from somewhere that didn’t exist anymore.

”SN1098?”
