Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 336: Chapter 331: The Call

Location:Nexus Pavilion

Date/Time:Mid Emberwane, 9939 AZI

Realm:Lower Realm — Pavilion Sub-space

The Pavilion woke her at the second bell.

Not gently. The formation arrays in her quarters shifted from their ambient night cycle to something Jayde had never felt — a frequency that bypassed her wards, bypassed her sleep, bypassed even sixty years of trained ability to filter non-critical alerts and went straight to the part of her nervous system that understood one thing: get up now.

She was on her feet before her eyes opened. Diamond talons extended, catching the agitated formation light in prismatic fragments. Gold eyes scanning the dark for threat vectors.

No threat vectors. The Pavilion’s walls were intact. The formation arrays weren’t alarmed — they were agitated, the distinction meaningful to someone who had spent months learning to read Isha’s architecture the way a sailor read weather. Alarmed meant danger. Agitated meant something had disturbed the ancient intelligence at a level that demanded response.

Reiko was already in the corridor. He’d felt the shift through the bond before the formations had reached Jayde’s quarters — the advantage of a beast whose nervous system operated at frequencies that cultivation couldn’t replicate. His lion-sized body filled the corridor with the particular tension of a predator woken by something his instincts couldn’t categorise, silver eyes catching the pulsing light, the mercury rune on his forehead — uncovered, here — glowing in sympathy with the Pavilion’s distress.

[The building is upset,] he sent. Not his usual dry observation — something more careful. [Not damaged. Not threatened. Upset. Like it received news it didn’t want.]

(Since when do you read buildings’ emotions?)

[Since I started living inside one that has them.]

Takara was on the corridor shelf. Awake — though Jayde suspected he’d been awake before the formation shift, the way she sometimes suspected he was awake when he appeared to be sleeping, his awareness operating on a schedule that had nothing to do with the Pavilion’s light cycle and everything to do with whatever he actually was. His ears tracked something above or below her range — the white fur of his small body catching the agitated light, three ribbons motionless.

She pulled on her training clothes. Silver-white hair loose. The real Jayde, walking through her home at the second bell because something had rattled the oldest intelligence she knew.

Green was in the common room.

Of course, Green was in the common room. Eight thousand years of healer’s instinct had calibrated the woman’s sleep to a sensitivity that bordered on precognition — any distress, in any being she considered under her care, at any hour, and Green’s fractured emerald eyes would open, and her small body would be vertical and moving before the distress had finished arriving. She stood at the counter with her midnight teacup in both hands, ash-blonde hair loose around her shoulders — loose hair meant she’d been woken mid-sleep and hadn’t bothered with the routine that eight thousand years had otherwise made automatic.

”He’s been like this since before the first bell,” Green said. Her gaze tracked the ceiling where the formation lines pulsed in rapid, irregular patterns. ”I’ve tried asking. He’s not ignoring me — he’s processing. Whatever he’s hearing, it’s taking everything he has to listen.”

The common room itself told the story. The ambient warmth that Isha maintained had shifted — not colder, but less stable, the temperature fluctuating in micro-increments that Jayde’s heightened senses could detect. The living walls, which normally adjusted their luminescence to match the occupants’ needs, were cycling through brightness levels without settling. The Pavilion’s equivalent of pacing.

Eden arrived forty seconds after Jayde. Blue eyes sharp, dark brown hair already tied back in the practical knot she maintained at all times — waking, sleeping, between them. Her medical kit was on her belt. She slept with it within arm’s reach, the straps pre-adjusted for rapid deployment, the contents inventoried and restocked every evening. The habit of a field surgeon who had learned across decades that the distance between a patient living and dying was often the time it took to find your instruments.

She entered the common room, read the space in three seconds — Green’s posture (concerned, not afraid), Jayde’s stance (alert, assessing), the formation patterns (irregular, accelerating), the absence of Isha’s voice (processing, overwhelmed) — and moved to her position beside the workbench without a word.

Two soldiers in the same room, reading the same situation, reaching the same conclusion: something was wrong, but not here. Here was the response station. The wrong was somewhere else.

”Isha,” Jayde said. ”Report.”

***

Isha’s voice came from everywhere when he finally spoke — the walls, the floor, the warm stone beneath Jayde’s feet carrying the vibration of an intelligence that had been listening to something for hours and had reached a conclusion it didn’t want to deliver.

”A Heartstone is in distress.”

Jayde leaned against the workbench. The Heartstones — she’d learned about them in her second month bonded to the Pavilion, when Isha had been teaching her the scope of what she carried. The Luminari, unable to shepherd every world personally, had seeded developing civilisations with smaller versions of the Nexus. Autonomous artifacts, each one bonded to a local caretaker. Heartstones — Isha’s word for them, spoken with the particular weight of a parent discussing their children. Thousands planted across dimensions in an age when the Luminari still walked between worlds. Many were dormant now. Some destroyed. But the rest formed the network — the transit system that connected the Nexus trading worlds, the infrastructure Jayde had been using for missions without fully understanding what powered it.

The system was designed to be self-sustaining. The Heartstones didn’t call for help. That was the point — they were meant to function independently, their caretakers guided by the artifact’s wisdom, the worlds growing at their own pace under shepherds who knew their flocks.

When a Heartstone screamed, something had gone fundamentally wrong.

”Which one?” Jayde asked.

”A world I haven’t heard from in three thousand years. Young — perhaps thirty thousand years of recorded history. The Heartstone was planted early, when the local species was still developing organised societies. It’s guided them well. The world was thriving at last contact.”

”Was.”

”Was.” Isha’s voice carried the weight of that single word. ”The distress signal has been building for months. I only detected it when the amplitude crossed the threshold for parent-Nexus awareness — the Heartstone was screaming so loud that its voice reached across dimensions. Whatever is wrong, it’s been wrong for a long time. And it’s getting worse.”

Jayde’s mind shifted. Not a conscious decision — the Commander’s architecture engaging, the tactical framework that had carried her through sixty years of operations in another life settling into place like armour being buckled on. She felt it happen: the part of her that was a seventeen-year-old Academy student stepping back, and the part that was Commander Jayde Centauri stepping forward.

”Tell me everything you know about this world.”

Isha told her.

The species was Beastkin — humanoid with animal characteristics. Not shapeshifters, not therianthropes; these were people whose biology carried beast traits as a natural expression of their heritage. Animal ears. Tails. Enhanced senses. Some with partial fur or feathers, the beast aspects manifesting in degrees that ranged from subtle (slightly pointed ears, enhanced night vision) to dramatic (full pelts, claws, predatory dentition). The beast traits weren’t cosmetic — they were tied to the world’s essence environment, each Beastkin drawing power through their animal aspect, the way Doha’s cultivators drew power through Crucible Cores.

The society was matriarchal. Women held political and spiritual authority — not through conquest or subjugation but through a cultural framework that had evolved across millennia. The women led because the culture placed the bearing and raising of the next generation at the centre of its value system, and the beings who did that work held the highest status. Men served as providers, craftsmen, warriors — roles of honour, not subjection. The reverence ran both directions. A functional partnership encoded in tradition.

The world’s essence saturation was moderate — lower than Doha’s. No interdimensional incursions on record. The Beastkin were the apex species, and the most dangerous thing they’d faced in thirty thousand years was each other, and they’d developed structures to manage even that.

Population: several hundred thousand, spread across a dozen major settlements and many smaller communities along the river systems. Agricultural. Pastoral. Integrated with their environment in ways that the Lower Realm’s frontier settlements would have envied — the Beastkin didn’t fight nature, they negotiated with it.

Or they had. Before whatever happened.

”The Heartstone’s caretaker?” Jayde asked.

”Silent. The bond between a Heartstone and its caretaker should be constant — a background hum, the way your bond with me operates. His signal has been absent for over a year. Either the bond has been severed, the caretaker is dead, or something is blocking the connection.”

Jayde straightened from the workbench. She’d been leaning — the posture of someone absorbing data, building a picture. Now she stood straight. The Commander assessing the picture she’d built.

A peaceful world. A matriarchal society. Several hundred thousand Beastkin who had spent thirty thousand years growing, farming, and worshipping their beast heritage. No external threats. No dimensional breaches. And then — something. Internal. Silent caretaker. Degrading spiritual ecosystem. A Heartstone screaming across dimensions.

”What are you recommending?” Jayde asked. ”You didn’t wake me at the second bell to tell me about a broken artifact in another dimension. You woke me because you want something done about it.”

”I woke you because I don’t have a choice.” Isha’s voice changed — dropping from the briefing register into something rawer. Older. The ancient intelligence speaking from a place beneath strategy. ”The Heartstones are my children, Jayde. Seeded by my creators. Connected to me through the network they built. When one of them screams for help, the parent responds. That is the architecture.”

A pause. The formation lines pulsing.

”It isn’t optional.”

The words landed differently than intelligence. Intelligence was information — processed, assessed, filed. THIS was an obligation. The Pavilion hadn’t woken her to brief her on a situation. It had woken her to deploy her on a mission she couldn’t refuse.

”A mandatory mission,” Jayde said. Flat. Not angry — the Commander didn’t waste energy on anger at operational constraints. But the distinction between should we go and we’re going was the distance between a strategic discussion and a deployment briefing, and the room needed to know which one they were in.

”Yes.”

Green’s teacup settled against her palm. Eden’s gaze met Jayde’s — reading the shift, the moment where the commander who had been gathering intelligence became the commander who was planning an operation. Reiko’s silver gaze lifted from the floor.

(We don’t get to choose.)

We rarely did. The Federation didn’t ask permission either. The mission existed. We executed it.

(And if I’d said no?)

You wouldn’t have. You didn’t in sixty years of service. You won’t now. Because the alternative is an artifact screaming into the void while its world burns, and you are constitutionally incapable of hearing that and walking away.

(I hate when you’re right.)

I’m always right. It’s the Commander’s defining characteristic.

”Right,” Jayde said. ”Then we plan this properly.”

She pulled the formation paper toward her. Drew the first line of the tactical map. And the briefing shifted — from intelligence-gathering to deployment planning, her mind pivoting from what is this to how do we survive it.

”Transit. How do we get there?”

”I open a passage through the dimensional substrate — the network that connects all seeded worlds to the parent Nexus. I can reach any Heartstone that still functions. The transit is stable. Return is guaranteed as long as the Heartstone remains intact on the other side.”

”And if it doesn’t?”

”Then I find another way. But it would take days. Possibly weeks. The dimensional substrate without a Heartstone anchor is navigable but slow — like sailing without stars.”

Jayde absorbed this. Weeks stranded on an alien world with no guaranteed extraction.

Risk assessment: moderate to high. Unknown threat, unknown environment, limited extraction contingency. Transit is dependent on artifact integrity. Acceptable if mission parameters are controlled and team composition addresses identified gaps.

***

The planning took three hours.

Jayde commandeered the workbench. Cleared it — formation crystals, half-finished projects, Green’s second teapot, all displaced to the side with the ruthless efficiency of a commander converting a dining table into a war room. She laid out a sheet of formation paper and began drawing.

Not runes. A map.

The world’s geography, as Isha described it: a major river system cutting through temperate forest, settlements concentrated along the valleys, the Heartstone’s sacred grove positioned on high ground four miles southeast of the nearest village. Approach vectors. Terrain features. The ridge system above the river that would provide concealed observation points. Fallback positions. Emergency extraction coordinates — the transit point where Isha could open the return passage.

Eden leaned over the map. Her eyes tracked Jayde’s tactical notation — a shorthand that belonged to no Doha system, the Federation’s operational markup adapted for hand-drawn terrain analysis. Eden read it fluently.

”Medical reconnaissance first,” Eden said. She tapped the nearest settlement on the map. ”Health indicators are the fastest diagnostic for social disruption. Whatever is wrong with this world, the population’s bodies will show it before the politics do. Malnutrition patterns, injury distributions, stress markers — I can read a community’s condition in an hour of observation without speaking to anyone.”

Agreed. Medical reconnaissance as primary intelligence-gathering method. Non-invasive. Low-profile. Provides actionable data before direct engagement.

”Observation phase: minimum three days,” Jayde said. ”We don’t approach any power structure. We don’t introduce ourselves. We don’t engage. We watch. Map routines. Identify the threat — or at least its shape — before we announce our presence.”

”Rules of engagement?”

”Defensive only. If we’re threatened, we disengage and reposition. We’re not here to fight — we’re here to understand. The Heartstone is calling for help, not for a war.”

(Unless it needs one.)

Then we’ll have the intelligence to wage one properly. But not before.

”Team composition.” Jayde looked around the common room. ”Eden — obvious. Medical expertise, operational partnership, and another set of Federation-trained eyes. Reiko—” She met the lion-sized beast’s silver gaze. ”A beast world. A large beast companion won’t raise suspicion. And your senses operate at frequencies mine don’t. You’ll detect things I miss.”

[I also provide moral support,] Reiko offered. [And excellent fur for sleeping against in the field.]

”Takara.” She looked at the white kitten on the workbench. He looked back. Those blue eyes — large, steady, holding something that she still couldn’t name after months of proximity. Whatever he was, he’d proven himself in every situation they’d faced. His instincts were older than hers. His situational awareness was better. And on a beast world, a small beast on her shoulder was invisible.

”Light team. Four assets. Investigation-focused.”

”The cover.” Eden’s voice shifted — the tactical register, the planning mode. ”We can’t walk onto a beast world looking like this. No ears. No tails. No beast traits. We’ll stand out like—”

”Like aliens,” Jayde finished. She’d been thinking about this since Isha described the Beastkin. ”Two beings with no beast traits on a world where everyone has them. We draw every eye in the settlement.”

”Not necessarily.” Isha’s voice again — the corrective tone of an intelligence that understood seeded worlds better than anyone alive. ”Some Beastkin are born with minimal or absent animal characteristics. The Beastkin term translates roughly as unblessed — a condition viewed with pity rather than suspicion. Low-status. Overlooked. Not persecuted, but not... seen.”

Eden’s expression sharpened. ”So we wouldn’t read as foreign. We’d read as incomplete.”

Cover identity: two unblessed Beastkin from a distant settlement. Explains human appearance. Explains ignorance of local customs. Low-status provides operational invisibility — nobody watches the pitied closely. They’re beneath notice.

”That’s our cover,” Jayde said. ”Two unblessed travellers from the outer settlements. Low-status means low scrutiny. We’re beneath notice, which means we can notice everything.”

”And Reiko?”

”Beast companion for one of the unblessed. On a beast world, contracting a beast for protection makes sense — especially for someone without their own beast traits.”

[I am nobody’s service animal,] Reiko sent. Dignified.

(You’re whatever the mission needs you to be.)

[...fine. But I require additional rations as compensation for this indignity.]

”Disguise isn’t the only concern,” Eden said. She was looking at the map — not at the terrain, at the settlement markers. ”Language. Culture. Behavioural norms. We can look like unblessed Beastkin, but if we walk wrong, eat wrong, greet wrong — the cover fails before we open our mouths.”

”Isha can provide real-time translation through our bond,” Jayde said. ”Language is handled.”

”Cultural protocols?”

Isha provided what he could — fragmented, filtered through three thousand years of distance and a Heartstone whose signal was degrading. The matriarchal greeting: women spoke first. Men waited. Physical contact between strangers was initiated by the higher-status individual. Eye contact with authority figures was offered, not demanded. The Beastkin ate communally. They slept communally. Privacy was a foreign concept in a society built on shared space and shared responsibility.

Jayde committed it to memory. Sixty years of deploying to alien cultures, hostile territories, and worlds where a misread greeting could start a war — the cultural parameters absorbed the way a sponge absorbed water. Not all of it would be accurate. Three thousand years was a long time for customs to drift. But the framework was better than nothing.

”Timeline,” Eden said.

”Minimum two weeks. Three days observation, then engagement based on what we find. Extraction via Nexus transit when the mission is complete or if the situation exceeds our capability to manage.”

”Supply requirements?”

”Two weeks of field rations. Medical supplies — full field kit. Emergency formation crystals for defensive wards. Water purification tablets — we can’t assume the local water is compatible with our biology.”

Green, who had been listening in silence — the particular silence of a woman who knew that the planning was not her domain but who would be heard when it was time to discuss the things that mattered to HER — set her teacup down.

”I’ll have the supplies packed within the hour.” Green’s eyes moved from Jayde to Eden and back — the healer’s assessment, checking colour, posture, eye clarity, the dozen micro-indicators that told her whether the people she cared for were fit to deploy. ”You’ll eat before you go. Both of you. A proper meal, not field rations. And you’ll take the red pouch — the one I keep in the infirmary cabinet. It contains treatments for essence-environmental mismatch. If the world’s essence is different enough from Doha’s to cause biological stress, those remedies will stabilise you.”

(We’re not children—)

We are her children in every way that matters. And the red pouch is tactically sound.

”Thank you, Green.”

”Don’t thank me. Come back alive. That’s thanks enough.”

***

The hour passed in organised chaos.

Green packed with the ferocious efficiency of a healer who had been provisioning deployments for longer than human civilisation had existed on Doha. Every item checked. Every seal tested. Every pouch labelled in Green’s precise, cramped handwriting — handwriting that hadn’t changed in eight thousand years because Green had decided early on what her letters looked like and saw no reason to revisit the decision.

Eden restocked her medical kit. Checked it. Rechecked it. The ritual — the surgeon’s pre-deployment sequence, hands confirming what the mind had already verified, every instrument in its place, every supply in its pouch, the muscle memory of preparation that had saved lives in operating theatres and battlefield aid stations across two lifetimes. She added the red pouch from Green’s infirmary without comment.

Reiko sat in the common room doorway and groomed his front paws with elaborate indifference. Through the bond, his mind was anything but indifferent — the predator’s pre-deployment state, every sense sharpening, every instinct aligning toward the transition from territory he controlled to territory he didn’t. His silver eyes tracked the preparations with ambient awareness. The mercury rune on his forehead dimmed to near-invisible at his will.

Takara sat on the workbench beside Jayde’s map. Still. Watching. His ears occasionally swivelling toward sounds that nobody else in the room reacted to — the Pavilion’s deeper frequencies, the dimensional substrate shifting as Isha prepared the transit corridor. Whatever he heard, his expression gave nothing away. A white kitten on a workbench. Nothing more.

White appeared in the doorway at the forty-minute mark. He didn’t enter. Didn’t speak. His steel grey eyes made one sweep of the common room — the map, the supplies, the team in various stages of preparation — and something crossed his scarred face that wasn’t concern and wasn’t approval and was, if you’d spent two years learning to read the micro-expressions of the most reserved man in the Pavilion, something very close to I see what you’re doing and I’ve decided to trust your judgment.

He nodded. Once. At Jayde.

Then he left.

Translation: return alive. Not a request.

Yinxin came last. Golden eyes and silver-white hair in the doorway, the dragon queen who had contracted Jayde to protect her children was standing in the warm light of the common room at four in the morning because her contracted guardian was about to walk through a hole in reality into a world that none of them had ever seen.

”Be careful,” Yinxin said.

”Always.”

The golden eyes held hers. Three thousand years of inherited queen intelligence measuring the distance between the word and the truth.

”Liar.” The faintest curve of her mouth. ”But come back anyway.”
