Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 338: Chapter 333: The Caretaker

Location:Off-World — Beastkin World (Sacred Grove)

Date/Time:Mid Emberwane, 9939 AZI (Day 2)

Realm:Nexus Mission

They moved at dawn.

Not toward the settlement — around it. The ridge path ran parallel to the river valley, offering concealment while they skirted the population centre. Below them, the Beastkin were already working — the increased harvest quota visible in the number of bodies bent over the eastern fields. The fox-eared woman with the broken wrist was among them. Her right hand doing the work of two.

Eden watched from the ridge. Said nothing.

They moved southeast. Toward the sacred grove.

***

The forest changed.

Not gradually — the way a room changed when you crossed from one kind of architecture into another. The air thickened with something between humidity and essence, pressing against Jayde’s senses.

Through the bond, Isha stirred. [Close. Damaged. Dim. But alive.]

Reiko stopped walking. His entire body went rigid. Fur standing along his spine.

[This grove. The essence here is speaking to me. Not words. Something older.] A pause through the bond. [The forest has been talking to me since we arrived, but here — here it’s SINGING. And I know the song. Not in my memory. In my blood.]

”Stay close,” Jayde said.

[It won’t change. It’s been waiting for someone to hear it.]

***

The sacred grove opened like a cathedral.

Trees ancient in the way mountains were ancient. Trunks wide enough that three people couldn’t span them. Bioluminescence concentrated here — pulsing, bright. A heartbeat made visible.

The Heartstone sat at the grove’s centre. A boulder, roughly chest-height, embedded in the earth as though it had grown there. Smooth. Warm-looking. Glowing — the same pulse as the grove’s trees but originating HERE. The source. The heart.

Through the bond, Isha: [My child. What has happened to you?]

The Heartstone pulsed. Stronger. Recognition.

***

They found him thirty feet from the stone.

Curled against an ancient tree’s roots, his body pressed into the bark as if trying to melt through it and reach the warmth beneath. A stag Beastkin. The antlers that should have crowned his head were broken — jagged stumps, splintered at the base. He was emaciated. Fur patchy, falling in clumps. His back — visible where the filthy cloth had ridden up — was layered with whip scars, old and older and oldest.

Eyes closed. Breathing shallow. Barely alive.

Eden moved. Kit open. Hands working before her knees hit the ground.

”Severe malnutrition. Dehydration — three days minimum. Antler stumps infected. Whip scarring extensive. Essence depletion at a level I’ve never seen in a living being.” She looked at Jayde. He should be dead.

Jayde knelt. Held water to cracked lips. The stag flinched — full-body recoil, conditioned, touch meant pain.

”Easy. Just water.”

Dark eyes opened. Stag’s eyes — wide-set, deep. Nothing in them except the flat exhaustion of a being who had stopped expecting anything at all.

He drank. Two sips. His throat worked like it had forgotten how.

Then his gaze found Reiko. The flat eyes widened. His whole head turned, tracking the lion-sized beast, and a sound came from his throat — a keening, low and broken. The sound of a man seeing something sacred through the wreckage of everything.

”Vor’shael,” he breathed. His hand reached. Trembling. Then his arm dropped. Too weak. Eyes closed.

Eden: ”Let him rest. This is going to take hours.”

***

It took the full day.

Eden worked through the morning. Antler wounds cleaned, debrided, salved from Green’s kit. Whip scars dressed. Dehydration addressed in increments — small sips every twenty minutes. The body coaxed back toward function one careful mouthful at a time.

The first time he was conscious long enough to see them properly — truly see them, not the half-awareness of a body surfacing briefly from collapse — his reaction was not gratitude.

It was terror.

His dark eyes locked on Jayde’s face. On Eden’s. On the smooth skin, the absence of ears, and the absence of fur. Human-shaped. Beast-free. The face of the Mother’s chosen. The face of the enforcers who carried whips.

He scrambled backward — or tried. His body couldn’t manage more than a convulsive twitch that pressed him harder against the tree roots. His arms came up to shield his head. The reflex of a man who had been beaten and expected to be beaten again.

”Please—” The word cracked from a throat that hadn’t begged in five years because there had been nobody to beg. ”Please, I’m already outcast, I have nothing left to take—”

”We’re not from the Mother.”

He didn’t believe her. His dark eyes darted between Jayde and Eden — reading their faces the way a prey animal reads a predator’s posture, looking for the tell that preceded the strike.

”We’re travellers,” Jayde said. Slow. Careful. Hands visible. The way you spoke to someone who had been broken by people who looked like you. ”We came from far away. We came because the Heartstone called for help.”

The effect of the word Heartstone was physical. His body went still. Not the frozen stillness of fear — something deeper. The stillness of a man who had just heard the name of someone he thought was dead.

”The Heartstone,” he whispered. ”The Heartstone is—”

”Alive. Damaged. But alive. We were sent by the parent Nexus — the source that the Heartstone was seeded from. It heard the distress call. It sent us.”

Rael stared at her. His dark eyes wide. His broken antler stumps catching the grove’s dim light. And something happened to his face that Jayde had seen before — in refugee camps, in liberated prisoners, in people who had survived past the point where survival seemed possible and were now being told that the thing they’d given up on still existed.

He broke.

Not dramatically. Not loudly. His body didn’t have the resources for loud grief. He simply folded — his hands covering his face, his shoulders curling inward, his thin frame shaking with dry, silent sobs because he was too dehydrated for tears. The sound he made was small and broken and had been waiting inside him for five years.

”I thought it died,” he managed. Between the shaking. ”When she broke my antlers — when the connection went dark — I thought I’d failed it. I thought I’d killed it by failing.”

”You didn’t fail anything. The Heartstone is alive because YOU’RE alive. It held on because you held on.”

He wept. Silently. For a long time.

Eden waited. Jayde waited. Reiko, at the grove’s edge, watched with silver eyes that held something Jayde couldn’t name — the particular attention of a being witnessing a reunion that mattered at a level deeper than language.

When the shaking stopped, Rael lowered his hands. Looked at Jayde. At Eden. At their human faces — the same faces that had triggered his terror minutes ago. But something had shifted. The Heartstone’s name had done what their words alone couldn’t. And Reiko’s presence — the Vor’shael, the sacred beast whose arrival the grove itself had responded to — had done the rest.

”My name is Rael,” he said. His voice was raw. Wrecked. But present. ”I was the caretaker.”

”Tell us what happened. When you’re ready.”

He looked at the Heartstone. At its dim, struggling pulse. At the artifact that was still alive because he’d dragged his broken body to this grove and pressed himself against its roots for five years.

”I’ll tell you everything,” he said. ”But I need you to understand — what I tell you starts with joy. It starts with the happiest day our world ever had. And it ends here.”

He drew a breath. The breath of a man about to walk back into the worst thing that ever happened to him.

And the story came. Not in the ordered structure of a report but in the rhythm of a man who had spent years alone rehearsing a story he’d never expected to tell — the words worn smooth from repetition in the dark, polished by grief into something that sounded, in places, almost like song.

”She came back, and we were so happy.”

That was the first fragment. Mid-morning. His eyes open, focused on nothing, the words arriving from a place deeper than thought.

Then gone. Forty minutes of sleep while Eden changed the compress on his antlers and Jayde sat cross-legged in the Commander’s listening posture — open, patient, the body language of someone who would not rush a broken man.

When he surfaced again, his voice was steadier. Still cracked. Still barely there. But the words came connected now, threaded on the line of something he needed to say before the strength ran out.

”The Ivory One. We called her that because of the white — pure white fur, white ears, white tail. Pink eyes. Once in ten generations, the Beast Lord marks a child at birth. Takes all the colour from their fur and gives them his light instead. The Ivory Ones are his living vessels. Her word carried the weight of prophecy.” His dark eyes found the canopy, the bioluminescent pulse. ”She was ours. Our connection to the Beast Lord made flesh. When she spoke in council, the other eleven didn’t defer because they were ordered to. They deferred because they believed — truly, deeply, the way you believe in the ground beneath your feet — that the Beast Lord spoke through her.”

He drank. Small sips. Eden watching his throat.

”She fell ill. A fever that burned for days. The healers couldn’t break it. Then she went still — eyes closed, breathing shallow. Nine days she lay like that. And the world...” His voice softened. The part of the story that still had beauty in it, that he could touch without flinching. ”The entire world prayed. Every settlement, from the capital to the furthest fishing village. I prayed at the Heartstone every dawn. Children brought flowers to her bedside until the room smelled like the forest after rain. Warriors stood vigil outside her door — not ordered to. They couldn’t bear to be anywhere else.”

He closed his eyes. Opened them. Something that might have been a smile on a face that remembered smiling.

”On the ninth day, she opened her eyes. The celebrations lasted three days. Three days of singing and feasting and children running through the streets with white flowers because the Beast Lord had answered our prayers.”

The almost-smile died.

”We should have known then. The eyes opened, but the warmth behind them didn’t come back. The Ivory One had a way of looking at you that made you feel like the most important person in the world — like the Beast Lord himself was seeing you through her eyes and finding you worthy. When she woke up, that look was gone. Something else was in its place. Something that looked AT you instead of INTO you.”

He was quiet for a long time. The Heartstone pulsed. A bird called from somewhere in the canopy — the only natural sound in a grove that seemed to be holding its breath.

”But we’d prayed so hard. Wept so much. When the Beast Lord answers your prayers, you don’t look at the answer and ask if it’s the right one. You say thank you. You celebrate. And you trust.”

***

”She was clever about it.”

Rael had slept for an hour. When he woke, Eden gave him broth — heated from their field supplies, the warmth doing as much work as the nutrition. His hands wrapped around the container. His dark eyes were clearer. The body’s slow return to function giving his mind enough purchase to access the harder memories.

”The first changes were gifts. Better roads — straight, flat, connecting every settlement. Bridges that could hold ten carts at once. Irrigation channels for the dry fields. Good things. Things the council had discussed for generations and never built because the old ways were slow and the old paths were sacred and change came hard to a people who measured time by the turning of the world.”

”She built them fast?”

”Faster than anyone had ever seen. As if she could see the finished road in her mind before the first stone was laid. The designs were... strange. Precise in ways our builders didn’t understand. But they WORKED. The settlements connected. The harvests improved. The dry fields grew green.”

He drank.

”And we praised her. Of course we did. The Beast Lord had returned the Ivory One with gifts of knowledge — roads and bridges and water that flowed where it was told. Who were we to question the Beast Lord’s methods?”

His voice shifted. The warmth draining out of it degree by degree.

”Then the questions started. How many people lived in each settlement. How much grain each field produced. How many children were born each cycle. Not the questions a leader asks because she cares — the questions a farmer asks about livestock. Counting. Measuring. Sorting.”

”Nobody found that strange?”

”Some did. The eldest council members — the ones who remembered the Ivory One before the illness — they noticed the change. The old Ivory One asked questions the way a mother asks about her children: how are they, what do they need, who is hurting. The new Ivory One asked questions the way a steward counts barrels: how many, how much, what’s the yield.”

He paused. His dark eyes finding Jayde’s with the particular directness of a man who had decided to be honest regardless of what honesty cost.

”How long?” Jayde asked.

”Five sum—” He stopped. His mouth worked around the word he’d been about to say, and then around the word that replaced it, and the bitterness of the replacement showed on his face like a bruise. ”Five YEARS. She made us stop counting by the turning of the world. Said seasons were primitive. Made us count years instead.” He said the word years the way you said a word in someone else’s language — carefully, without love. ”We have always measured time by the Beast Lord’s breathing — the green time, the gold time, the white time, the dark time. She stripped the breathing out of time and gave us numbers.”

Eden went still beside Jayde. The thread caught.

”What other changes did the Mother bring?” Jayde asked. Carefully. The way you pulled a thread without breaking it.

Rael almost laughed. The sound was broken — the ghost of humour in a throat that had forgotten it.

”So many. Some good. Most... not.” He stared at the broth in his hands. ”She demanded rocks from the ground. A soft yellow stone — useless to us. Too soft for tools, too heavy for building. We’d seen it in the rivers, in the mountain caves. Pretty, but worthless. She was MAD for it. Made them dig up entire mountains. Hundreds of workers. Settlements relocated to the digging sites. And for what?” His confusion was genuine — five years later, still genuine. ”She made ornaments. Heavy things she hung on her body. And blocks — stacked in a guarded room in her compound. Just blocks of soft stone, sitting there. Guarded day and night. We couldn’t understand.”

(Gold.)

”The coloured stones, too. Blue from the northern caves. Green from the river beds. Red from the mountain’s heart. We’d used them for bead-work, ceremony-stones for coming-of-age. Pretty things, sacred in their small way. She took ALL of them. Stripped the rivers. Emptied the caves. Sent workers into seams so deep they came back grey with dust and coughing blood.”

(Sapphires. Emeralds. Rubies.)

”But the worst—” His hands tightened on the container. The broth trembled. ”The worst was the black powder. She mixed things — stones and soil and something she scraped from the bat caves. Kept it locked away. Then she packed it into holes drilled in the mountainside. Lit a cord.”

He was quiet. The grove held its breath.

”The mountain broke. I don’t mean it cracked or crumbled. It BROKE — a sound like the world tearing open. Rock flying through the air like leaves in a storm. Three workers died. But the worst wasn’t the dead.” His dark eyes went distant. ”The worst was the sound after. Not the explosion — AFTER. The land screaming. Every Beastkin within a mile heard it through their beast aspect — through the connection to the earth that our people carry in our blood. Some fell to their knees. Some vomited. Some wept. The land was screaming in pain, and we could HEAR it.”

His hands shook. The broth spilled. He didn’t notice.

”Mother stood at the edge. Watched the dust clear. Measured the hole with her eyes. Turned to her guard and said: ’Next time, use twice as much.’”

***

The sun had moved past the canopy’s zenith. Late afternoon light filtered through the grove in long amber shafts. Eden had cleaned the spilled broth, checked Rael’s vitals, and given him more water. He was fading — the day’s effort pulling at a body that was running on fumes and stubbornness.

But he wasn’t done.

”I could have forgiven the roads. The gold. Even the black powder — destruction in service of building, I could have told myself. I was good at telling myself things.” His voice was barely above a whisper now. ”What I couldn’t forgive was what she did to the unblessed.”

”Tell us.”

”The unblessed — those born without strong beast traits. Minimal ears, or none. No tail. No fur. They look...” He gestured at Jayde. At Eden. At their smooth human faces. ”They look like you. In our culture, the unblessed are loved but mourned. The Beast Lord didn’t mark them. They can’t hear the forest the way we hear it. Can’t feel the earth through their feet. They live among us as family, always, but they carry a grief — the grief of standing in a singing world and hearing silence.”

”What did she do?”

”She gathered them. Every unblessed Beastkin from every settlement — perhaps three hundred across all the communities. Brought them to the capital. Gave them the finest houses. The best food. Clothing woven with the yellow stone’s thread. And she called them—”

His jaw tightened.

”She called them the Truly Blessed.”

The words landed in the grove like stones dropped into still water.

”She inverted everything. The Beastkin who carried the Beast Lord’s mark — the ears, the tails, the fur, the connection to the land — she called them cursed. Beasts. Animals. And the unblessed — the ones born without the mark — she called them the purest form. The ideal. She said the beast traits were a disease. A deformity.”

He looked at Jayde. At her disguised brown eyes. Her human face.

”She was disgusted by her own form. The white fur. The white ears. The tail. An attendant — a woman who had served the Ivory One since before the illness — came to me in secret. Weeping. The Mother had been clawing at her own fur. Tearing it out in patches. Screaming at her reflection. She’d tried to cut her ears off with a knife. When the attendant stopped her, the Mother struck her across the face. ’Don’t touch me with those PAWS,’ she said.”

His dark eyes held something that was too large for the word sorrow and too precise for the word grief.

”The attendant’s hands were human-shaped. All our hands are. But she had fur on her knuckles — soft brown rabbit fur, barely visible. And the Mother saw FUR and saw an animal touching her.”

The grove was silent. The Heartstone pulsed its dim, struggling rhythm.

”She put the unblessed in power. Guards. Overseers. Administrators. The people who had spent their lives being pitied were now ruling over the people who had pitied them. And some of them...” Rael’s voice was very quiet now. ”Some of them took to it. The Mother gave them a story where THEY were the chosen ones. Where their lack of beast traits was superiority. Some believed her. They became her most devoted enforcers — the ones who carried the whips.”

He touched his back. The gesture of a man who knew exactly which of the unblessed had held the handle.

”The ones who refused — the unblessed who understood that the Mother’s favour was poison — they were quietly reassigned. Moved to labour settlements. She had no use for tools that wouldn’t cut.”

Eden was repacking the medical kit. Her movements precise, automatic. Her eyes meeting Jayde’s across Rael’s fading form.

”I couldn’t tell myself anymore,” Rael said. His eyes closing. The last of the day’s strength running out like water through cupped hands. ”I couldn’t say the Beast Lord works in strange ways. I couldn’t say, perhaps this is a test. She called us paper people. She called us savages. She called us beasts fit for labour and nothing else. And she wore the Ivory One’s face while she said it.”

His breathing slowed. The sedative of exhaustion pulling him under.

”I had to try,” he whispered. ”Even if it killed me. I had to try.”

His eyes closed. He slept.

The grove pulsed. The trees breathed. Reiko at the edge, silver eyes catching the bioluminescent light. Takara on Jayde’s shoulder — warm, still, present.

Eden caught Jayde’s eye across the sleeping man. The look held for three seconds. Neither of them spoke.

They didn’t need to. Not yet.
